meta.stackexchange.com/q/364268/369802 < Doesn't stuff like that (I made a script) go on StackApps instead of MSE?

5:17 PM
@Tinkeringbell I personally would've answered the announcement post, then posted on SA.

Yeah, that's what I would recommend here too. I can probably migrate the question... but didn't want to be too unilateral XD

@Tinkeringbell meh

Any good argument to that meh?

MSE is fine, as is SA

@Ollie Or post on SA first and leave a link as an answer on MSE.

5:19 PM
@rene Do you have precedence for MSE being fine for stuff like this?

Seasoned Advice, sure ;D

Or is that just an opinion ;)

Seasoned Apps & Stack Advice

@Tinkeringbell if they turn into into a support question with a self answer I see no reason to move it.

@rene True, that might actually be an option too.

5:21 PM
People really don't like the font changes, do they?

Also, the script isn't entirely perfect... it doesn't change the inbox notifications, at least not for me?

No.

People really don't like change. If you change it back now, you'll have the same outrage.

Make it A/B change then ...

@rene are you sure about that?

5:23 PM
I've disliked a lot of changes on SE, but I just can't be bothered about this one.

I'm too used to changes on SE.

That too.
And we had a lot of warning, perhaps that helped.

not a fan, though i doubt i would have noticed if not told about it
particularly on smaller font-size areas, like comments, it doesn't look right

And the votes. Threes look particularly horrible.

are italics more pixelated?

5:32 PM
@Ollie yes

@user400654 Yes. Especially the "be specific and more detailed" in the mod flags.

@Tinkeringbell you're free to migrate it. I'm done with it

there's always seemed to be more space above the tagname than below, but it's more now
maybe the same? dunno

@rene I'll go see if there's a few close votes for it being off-topic on MSE first ;)

5:35 PM

One complaint: Next time just write a short custom reason instead of picking that one XD

Noted

5:53 PM
It has close votes now. Well?

:P I have two hours left until bedtime. I'm waiting a bit, so I don't have to deal with the possible fallout? :P

isnt the content of that question already in an answer on the announcement

Is it?
Lemme check.
Not one by this person though there is indeed one other userstyle (not a script)

1 hour later…
6:59 PM
great, now that that question is migrated i can't read it due to a giant cookie popup

@user400654 i.stack.imgur.com/Lm6H8.png There you go.

I agree it's not small, but it's not that big for everyone; what's your display resolution?:

it's an old 18" monitor ith ink
1366x768

Should we be encouraging folks to post answers instead of new questions when they discover bugs with the new fonts? Ex: meta.stackexchange.com/q/364286/622284

takes up nearly 70% of vertical height, banner takes up the rest, i wouldn't care if ithad an x or went away. I'm there for content not cookie policy

Rob
So, that's the bug; the rendered size doesn't consider the display size.
Left: Desktop, right mobile. Android FF.

right matches for chrome ios
i also prefer mobile's join banner

They used to have a skinny banner on the bottom, no larger than the top bar; but it was eaten by the blob.

Is there a FAQ that lists the image file formats that are acceptable to the uploader? I found meta.stackexchange.com/q/99734/334566 & meta.stackexchange.com/q/81400/334566 but they don't have that info. I know that PNG, JPEG, and GIF are supported. Are there others? I just tried to inline a newbie's .webp file which is hosted on imgur, and it didn't work. So I ended up downloading it & converting it, which is a bit tedious to do on the phone.
A few months ago, I learned that we can display SVGs, both on the sites & in chat, but we can't host them on imgur.

So.... I know some people can make forms look different by mucking with the page sheets somehow to make a mock-up of what the page would look like with additional/different fields - is this relatively simple (for someone with limited programming experience) to do or ... what? I'm trying to make a mockup of a new form for the contact page.

Rob
@PM2Ring It's possible to upload an extended list of extensions, and larger images, using one's own account (at Imgur) and pasting the link to the post - did you notice if that's what the OP did, so it worked for them and not for you.

@Catija You can do it in your browser's developer console, but you do need to know the relevant HTML & CSS. And possibly JavaScript, if the stuff you want to change uses JavaScript.

7:48 PM
I (just! - haha) need to add a couple of fields with prefilled text - I don't need any of the JS to make it work. Essentially, I want to have a mock-up of what a new entry would look like if it had the appropriate fields and was filled in by a user.
I'm not super experienced with CSS but I know enough HTML to get me in trouble. :P

@Rob The post author is a 1 rep newbie, so they don't have the rep to inline images. They posted a link to an imgur page, not the image itself. I think I tried doing ![some_url.webp] but it didn't display an image.

I could do it in an image editor but it wouldn't be pretty. :P

@Rob Here's the post, if you're curious: math.stackexchange.com/a/4134285/207316

heya guys and gals

7:56 PM
@Catija That should be easy, then. You just need to write the relevant <input> tags. What browser are you using? Sorry, I can't offer much more help. I'm on my phone (so I don't have a dev console). But someone who knows any Web dev stuff, using the same (or similar) browser should be able to walk you through it.

🤔

Rob
@PM2Ring That's exactly what happened 🔮

@Rob Sorry, you lost me.

@Rob The original version of that post just had a link, no visible image. That's why I tried to edit it: to make the image visible.

8:27 PM
The font change looks fine to me.

Rob
@PM2Ring It is a .PNG, and so could simply be inlined:

9:01 PM
@user400654 Oh dear that's awful. What OS is that on?

windows/chrome
left is new, right is old
(not quite sure why the left looks darker)
maybe a trick of the eyes due to the grey background

Looks fine on my system (Linux).

until today, i didn't realize the number was bold

9:53 PM
@Catija Just as one hint, it's relatively easy to play with this in the browser dev tools. But if you want to seriously experiment with this, you need to copy the site locally and edit that. The browser tools are ephemeral, you will always lose your changes on refresh, which gets incredibly frustrating if you try anything slightly bigger

Thanks! I think I just need a screenshot.
Also, +100000000 on the cryptocurrencies.

@Catija I just wrote what everyone else on meta thinks about that ;-)
For the forms, you only need to edit the html and apply the same classes as the other input fields have, that should take care of the design parts
This is really a lot easier in a local sandbox with simple html and css, but setting that up is harder than playing around in the browser dev tools
It's interesting that I didn't get a downvote yet on my cryptocurrency answer

🤣

Though honestly, I do think that the cryptocurrency sites are just a straw fire fueled by extremely short-term interest. I think the topic merits a single site, and would benefit from that because it would avoid mindless cheerleading (or this would doom it, because they can't get along at all).

Why isn't there just a single cryptocurrency website for all of them?

10:07 PM
historical reasons
the first site was bitcoin, and without a name change you'll never get it to be a general cryptocurrency site
and SE hates name changes, for a lot of understandable reasons and a few ineffable ones

Wouldn't it be easy to merge them all into a single site and redirect?

are you volunteering to moderate that mess?

Merging the questions in would not be "easy" because we don't have an actual way to do it without destroying post IDs, which are directly correlated to order of asking.
@MadScientist we used to care... a bit too much about branding.

@MadScientist Oh I'd love to. I'd just ban everyone and start from scratch. :^)

@Catija my understanding was that there's a bunch of really, really, truly annoying technical aspects when changes the name of a site later

10:11 PM
It's one thing if the site is at su or sf scale... but Bitcoin??? Eh.

I tried to get Skeptics renamed to "Citation needed", but there was never any chance of that going through

Is Bitcoin particularly large?

@MadScientist eh. Not really. We've done it more, recently. Writing for example and CodeGolf... though the latter didn't require a URL change.
@MadScientist hahahahaha

@Catija I think the URL change might have been the issue for the stuff I remember

We don't even retire the old URL... we just redirect it.

10:24 PM
I don't remember the details anymore, we went as far as we could on our meta, and discussed it with Shog, and there didn't seem any way to actually change the name
I think our problem was that it wasn't about a scope change

Ah. Hmm. I know that Robert was generally against the name changes but most were before my time.
By the time I got hired, Bitcoin was on the cusp of banning non-Bitcoin questions.

I don't have access to the chat rooms this was discussed in, but this was a very long time ago

I'm already on record ranting about these sites. :P

Just declare SE eco-friendly and nuke all cryptocurrency sites for violating that ;-)

Hahaha
What about motor vehicles?

10:34 PM
those have an actual use

The new fonts, on Windows, look fine on my 125% DPI laptop screens, but too light on my 100% DPI desktop.

Ooooh, burn.

but a deserved one ;-)

Q: Problem with the crypocurrency community

DottoreMThis question arises from here where the OP discusses about rushed proposals, in this case for the cryptocurrency IOTA. My question is of a slightly similar nature in that it focuses on blockchain in general. For those who are not very familiar, blockchain is the underlying technology for blockc...

A past discussion, but at the time, other cryptocurrencies were still on-topic on Bitcoin.
I don't know why SE didn't close the proposals as duplicates at the time given that.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog have you tried the editor on Windows using Chrome? Does it look too bold to you?

@JasonAller No, not too bold

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog is it using Cascadia Mono with a 400 weight?

Don't know
I held out with IE and Edge Legacy for as long as I could because they rendered fonts a little bolder than Chrome and Chromium-based Edge.
