@Ollie If you want to wipe the conversation below my answer on your post, let me know and I'll delete my half
since it's mostly no longer relevant

@bad_coder There's been some riots, and a semi famous person that lives in one of the cities that had riots has started posting on Twitter about them, in an attempt to gather interest/fame ;)

7:38 AM
@Rob the Dutch shields are also very light weight, they are made of "woven" willow sprouts, and covered with some sort of fabric on the exterior. Great for protection against rocks and fireworks, probably not so great against bullets

@Luuklag The problem with wicker or ratan is that it's possible to get a good grip on it, to pull or twist. This was used long ago in poorer countries: invaluable.com/auction-lot/… and a Reddit: reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/l4kn41/comment/gkozmmw says exactly the same thing I said. It's unprofessional and not intimidating. --- Do they have pool noodle batons?

@Rob That's probably why they're covered in cloth: !images3.persgroep.net/rcs/DmVqtA9yp1VTvqGG3TTakdlH7js/…

9:17 AM
@Rob there is not a huge history to support the need for anything more intimidating. Except the few soccer "fans" clashes it is uncommon to see the violence we've seen the last few days at this scale.

sound like hooligawd

@MetaAndrewT. if it quacks like a duck... they are hooligans ;)

@rene Practice makes perfect.

@Tinkeringbell You mean honks like a goose

Rob
@Luuklag You didn't watch the video explaining all that.

@JourneymanGeek For hooligans, perhaps a comparison with geese is better, yes.

@Rob sad but true, yes.

We'll put it on your bill.

@Tinkeringbell on the contrary, I'm all for having more interaction with parents, not less. :)
@Rob oh, so that's what I remember reading about.

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Yours must be nicer to hang out with than mine, then... XD
Can't wait until my place is finished XD

@Tinkeringbell I don't hang out with my parents... ;)

He's a parent himself, right Sha

2:36 PM
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating See, that sounds nice :D

Rob
A helicopter parent (also called a cosseting parent or simply a cosseter) is a parent who pays extremely close attention to a child's or children's experiences and problems, particularly at educational institutions. Helicopter parents are so named because, like helicopters, they "hover overhead", overseeing every aspect of their child's life constantly. A helicopter parent is also known to strictly supervise their children in all aspects of their lives, including in social interactions. == Etymology == The metaphor appeared as early as 1969 in the bestselling book Between Parent & Teenager by Dr...

@Rob Hmm. I'm not sure if it's helicoptering or just differences of opinion ;)
I wouldn't call it helicoptering, at least ;)

Rob
3:27 PM
@Tinkeringbell You asked: "I'd love to know how actively limiting my interactions with my parents unknowingly seeks more attention, ...". --- Another word is the opposite of "pushback".

@Tinkeringbell the word hooligans is usually reserved for football supporters.
@Tinkeringbell can you share an URL to a news article (that's the one thing I didn't catch up until now.)

@bad_coder Here is an overview article from the largest news outlet: nos.nl/liveblog/…

@Luuklag I've been wanting to ask if you are Dutch (don't answer if you consider the question going against your privacy)? I suppose so because of the way you name is written.
@Luuklag arrgghh now I have to make the effort of reading in Dutch, ohh well something different :)
ok "onvoorstelbaar" not to be confused with "on-wurst-stelbaar"
"gewelt" = "gewalt" important word.
"winkels" = "shops" this word made my day.

3:56 PM
@bad_coder If you're done making fun of the Dutch language, the bbc has been covering most of it as well ;)
@bad_coder Yeah, so we prefixed it with 'corona'. Now there's coronahooligans :P

Ryan Donovan on January 26, 2021
We’ve made some improvements to one of our most popular integrations.

@Tinkeringbell I'm not making fun of the Dutch language honest. In fact I'm immensely enjoying the news article (something different to start my day). If you visit my country this is how we have fun with our own language.

🚽

@Tinkeringbell detail, that's a compound not a prefix (I nitpick linguistic stuff, it's one of my hobbies.)

@bad_coder I was kidding... I use :p or ;) if I'm not entirely serious :)
Dutch people have fun with our own language too :D
I do think 'geweld' is with a 'd' at the end though, unless we're talking about soaking raisins or beans in water... :P

4:06 PM
@Tinkeringbell zinloos gewelt

@Tinkeringbell "Met deze vorm van geweld" "With this form of violence"
@rene "When you something you grandmother...senseless violence."

@bad_coder yeah I'm one of those

4:22 PM
@RyanM yeah, I'll remove those comments.

@Luuklag you mean one of those tall, pale, slim guys? Who live surrounded by a bunch countries, whose own country is known for catering to all sorts of devious appetites? Who are incomprehensibly liberal yet composed at the same time? Who had that inspiring painter Van Gogh? And secretly foster prejudices like Dijsselbloem does?

4:43 PM
I'm really curious about this question. There have been requests to allow us to close-vote deleted questions, but none saying why. Can someone tell me... why?

@Tinkeringbell ^^ just to clarify I have no problem with the Dutch. I've always had at lest one Dutch friend during the course of my life, but it hasn't been enough.

@Ollie To avoid someone self-deleting a post, have the votes age away, then undelete it and as such game the system? ;)

@Tinkeringbell That requires waiting.
Then I'll age.

I'm not actually sure why, perhaps because that would make it consequent with the reopen behavior. It is a bit crooked when things can be reopened, but not closed again.
or be reopened, but not closed in the first place.
On the other hand, if it's deleted, why waste time/effort on closing it? Reopening while deleted might send a signal that the post should be undeleted, closing it doesn't really.

@Ollie we don't want that, right?

4:49 PM
@rene No, no.
Who's we?

Me

Then no, we don't.
@Tinkeringbell True...

2 hours later…
6:35 PM
@Ollie Deleted mine as well 👍

@bad_coder yeah that would be about an accurate description.

7:19 PM
@Luuklag What?! You mean the country that gave us Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkard and Ruud Gullit? Glorinfeld, Rene and Tinkerbell? Wat een meesterwerk :)

haha yeah that country. Also don't forget the islam hater Geert Wilders

@Luuklag uuhhh, didn't know about Wilder Geert, have to check him out...

7:37 PM
@Luuklag You're forgetting to tell him about Thierry Baudet too (He's like Trump)

@Tinkeringbell True, he's really full of himself

@Luuklag He also did a Trumpy with the Tweet about the riots and curfew... "This is the third night we're being locked up" is an awful lot like "remain calm" XD

@Luuklag lol those cowboy boots and blue jeans are pretty Trump :)

Alpha test... v2!

7:53 PM
"we’ve also improved undo/redo history support to be much more reliable overall" oooh this is exciting
Also love the Charcoal shout-out :-)

Can people compile me a list of recently-filed bug reports (filed after the CommonMark transition) of differences between the client-side rendering of a post and the server-side rendering?

@SonictheCuriouserHedgehog That's quite an undertaking. Perhaps start with everything tagged and or

is another good one

Rob
@Ollie The Ollieage, not at all like the Forestage.

Good amount of answers on the new alfa test already

Rob
8:50 PM
@Luuklag With 22 answers already (in 1 1/2 hours), it's not the "Rich Text Editor", it's the "Poor Text Editor".

@Rob meh. There's a reason it's an opt in test

A lot of them are also weird edge cases

9:09 PM
@RyanM True, and minor tweaks
Its also not even considered a proper Beta, so yeah saying it's a Poor editor is very condecending towards the devs

Rob
They will be poor allocating funds to deal with the reports instead of using them elsewhere; let's not rephrase constructive feedback into insults.

@Rob not sure what you're hinting at here?

@Rob While I'm assuming good faith and I believe you that that was your intent, that is certainly not how I read your original message. It sounded to me like you were saying it was poor quality, and based on the reactions from others in the room, it seems they read it the same way that I did.

9:53 PM
Already wrote 8 answer to the markdown editor

10:27 PM
@Luuklag A piffling 3 or 4 here. Many more to come though, it's awesome.
Why does the link thing insert backslashes in the [], like this: \[text\](https://link.com)?

Why has it taken so long to launch a new editor that was already on Teams for half a year?

Hello

Hello.

Rob
10:59 PM
@Xnero The one on Teams is one version, the one on MSE yesterday was a different version, and the one we have today is a third version.

user707129
@Rob I am completely lost.

Rob
Which word?

user707129
What?

Rob
That word doesn't appear in my comment.

user707129
Thanks but I'll ask someone else then.

Rob
11:04 PM
OK

Is it just me, or does the new editor use the laaarge line-height? @Catija.

No clue. Sorry 😞. That's not something I generally notice. I also don't use the rich text view.

@Xnero Because Teams users have different needs from public Q&A users
> Copy and pasting from a rich text editor like Google Docs or Word is much more common within a company where you may be transferring information from existing documentation to a Team, whereas much of our public site content is created from scratch.

11:20 PM
Because if you don't take time to consider the needs of the community, the community will not like it. Being able to say they we had mods and Charcoal helping with early testing shows that we're interested in ensuring that we care about y'all being able to appreciate and enjoy the new editor. That's also why this is an opt-in alpha and not an actual release.

user707129
@Catija Thanks cc @SonictheCuriouserHedgehog

And, to be clear... the community will likely dislike it because... y'all are the ultimate testers in some way but also because the editor is our funnel through which all content is run, so an easy-to-use editor that has minimal bugs and avoids getting in the way of creating posts... means that everyone has a better experience here. If you're struggling with the editor, you're less likely to post so there's less content to help people solve their problems.

Hopefully the team doesn't take a flood of issues as "disliking" it. More of...helping test the preview. That's my perspective, at least. They've already fixed a bunch of issues, so I think it has the potential to be a lot better than the current editor.
Everyone here knows how to make the current Markdown editor do what we want, but I'm sure we've all seen (and edited) a lot of posts from people who don't. Hopefully there will be less of that in the future :-)

Ben is great and it seems like he's appreciating that y'all are finding improvements. I have some that I've found over time and he's always really open to them. The difficulty will be triaging and recognizing which are must-haves / deal breakers and which are improvements that are nice-to-have.

I like writing in pure Markdown without a "smart" editor trying to figure out what I want, so as long as there's always a way (which there is) to switch back to Markdown-only, I'm happy :)

Also... if there's something you feel strongly about... it's OS, so you can help (assuming you know how and have the time).

Yeah, on that note, major props to y'all for making it open source :-)

Thanks! Aaron seems to like making his design stuff (Stacks) open source, so it was a priority for him and Ben and Ham seemed really on board with that.
