@user1306322 not as far as I know

I find the wider spacing easier to read ._.

3:43 AM
Honestly after giving it a bit, I also find the newer spacing easier.
At the very least not harder.

4:01 AM
I don't mind the spacing, but I feel like on mobile at least all the text shrunk. It feels like I'm reading everything in tags.

@user1306322 I am at top for sci fic

5:21 AM
@SonictheMaskedWerehog thanks for reporting, I'll have a look.

5:41 AM
Morning! :)

@Tinkeringbell late morning;) (for me atleast)

@Tinkeringbell Did you by any chance happen to see the SmokeDetector message right after your last message last night?

@SonictheMaskedWerehog No?

It's in the star board

Does it need more handling?

5:45 AM
No, but its title is...interesting

I hope you aren't feeling left out, as you're a red parrot :)

Red parrots rule :)

(I'm not the one who starred it, I just noticed it in the star board right now)

Ohh. Hah :D
Yeah, and red ones are the best so I like that person for getting rid of the green ones :D

hmm
If red parrots hate red tomatos...
maybe green tomatos would repel green parrots

I say you go propose that as an answer :P

5:53 AM
lol

Red vs green?

@MetaAndrewT. Red will always win :)

@Tinkeringbell They are even that clever to put on green feathers when dominating the bird feeder to discredit their competitors ;-)

Ssst! Don't give away our secrets.

Huh, it's been deleted. Nvm

8:35 AM
just dropping by to share this:

9:32 AM
@Rob gotta admit, this follow-up is a rather whitewashed retort that's only supposed to ruin the joke

Rob
9:45 AM
@M.A.R. We don't doubt that you would judge it that way, but that's what the author wrote for the remainder of the comic strip from where the Easter Egg was derived. Perhaps you should write them, and explain their joke to them.

@Rob It's not so much as explaining the joke than how the latter panels precisely make the point in the former, except in an explain-like-Im-five way. You think it's a coincidence that only the first two panels keep getting memed?
But admittedly, I really thought this follow-up was some judgemental rule lawyer's attempt at making the joke "safe". The first two panels are that good. Beautifully complete.

10:14 AM
sigh
I'd like to point out, and I DO REALISE I AM DOING THIS MYSELF....
that it isn't necessary to get the last word in all the time
@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе also... is that animal crossing?

1 hour later…
11:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yep that's animal crossing.
Does anyone here play? I need 3 full grown white hyacinths.

1 hour later…
12:26 PM
@Tinkeringbell Pocket Camp to be precise.

Ah, I'm playing on the Switch :)

@Tinkeringbell yep, those are items from the last limited time event (one of the "chill out" ones, you just have 5 days to go around and pick up gyroids that you then use to build limited time items)

Oh... it looked like the fish roasting over a fire from the Switch, which can be won with the fishing tournament IIRC.
And if you have one, you can go to Harvey's island and create a room full of them for pictures ;)

you know, the mobile game is suffering from not-so-good monetization policies

Yeah you mentioned that. The Switch game so far is still getting free updates, and free cloud saves ;)

12:40 PM
@Tinkeringbell "Free".

True, you pay 60 euros in advance ;)
You do have to pay for online play. That's a major downside.

You still have to pay for the Nintendo Online thing, but it is at least understandable.
Anyway.

@M.A.R. what was the comment?

@Tinkeringbell above are the items from the event. Bottom two rows are free, the two on the top row you pay for (and as you can notice, the lantern is an hand-held item. Basically every held item is pay-to-get in the mobile game...)
As you can see the free item are pretty bland.
Compare with the average gatcha paid-for fortune cookie item set:

Well the candles and tv from the bottom row look nice to me, I don't think New Horizons has those.
I just got some hand-held items too, there were balloons and bubble sticks at the fireworks shows :)

1:02 PM
@Tinkeringbell the tv only show static noise, probably a reference to The Ring

Hah, nice! now I want it even more.
I started out with the idea to make my island kinda creepy but it turned out way too cute. Too many flowers ;)

not really, they went for the lazy route with the tv. They should have had Nook face appear on it at random times. The actually good item there is the well, because villagers hide inside and then pop out to attempt to scare you.

Aww that's cute! All mine ever do is run around, sit, fish, or water the wrong flowers.

1:19 PM
@Tinkeringbell wait, I think you got it wrong.
In Pocket Camp, all villagers do is STANDING IN ONE PLACE.
They don't walk, they don't run, they don't interact with the world around them.
Only the ones you invite to your camp actually do something.
Whenever you enter the camp they choose where to stay and don't move until you leave.

Okay, that's even more boring.

The only thing they do is interact with some specific items they are close to.

Basically, they randomly chose what to do. Either they choose one of the items in the camp they can interact with, or they just stand still in the open.

Play FlyOrDie

1:24 PM
Item interactions also aren't really that good. Some items give cute output (like them standing behind the counter of a shop like in the picture above, or sitting in a chair)... other are MEH.

@Tinkeringbell Lol at "wrong flowers"

For example, they will stay still in front of a light and continuously switch it off- on-off-on.........
It's kinda creepy.

I've stopped playing animal crossing for the time being. All the QOL issues were getting to be too much.

@doppelgreener The console or the mobile version?

1:28 PM
@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе Console
There's a mobile version!?

Pocket Camp, the one I was talking about just a little above.
Not very good.
Ruined by extreme monetization schemes.

@Rubiksmoose I can only use so many yellow cosmos ;)

My greatest issue with the mobile game is that it offer a single thing fans asked since the first game on the N64 was made.

That makes sense. I saw other conversation happening about the console game but didn't remember any gatcha features that were part of it. ;P

... gatcha...
those little egg machines?

1:31 PM
yes

@JourneymanGeek yup!

@doppelgreener Are there particular ones you dislike?

aka real life microtransactions for cosmetic... oh wait

@JourneymanGeek Fun fact: Comes from the Japanese onomatopoeia word for the sounds the machine makes "gachapon" (ガチャポン)

Ok, now want to see how you make a parrot angry?

1:33 PM
@Tinkeringbell Aaaaaaaall the menu stuff, online play being behind 15 dialogs instead of inside a menu where I have to repeat all of them if I make any wrong choice, almost everything I want to do actually being locked behind multiple repetitive dialog windows, crafting in my home not accessing the home inventory, multi-crafting not existing, and some oth ers.

The mobile game has a feature players requested multiple times in the console versions.

@doppelgreener Ah, just the regular stuff then :P I agree most of that would be nice to have :D

you can get a villager to follow you around. And change their clothes as you wish.
And... it is paywalled.

They could also have shortcuts for item interactions (like L to drop an item you have hovered, X to eat it, Y to open it, etc) but instead it's in a menu I have to open and navigate separately making quick operations impossible. Also, there's no "eat multiple".

4$/MONTH

1:35 PM
@doppelgreener oof

you would expect that in the 60$ console version you get a follower for free.... nope, the console games don't have that.

And there's no audio controls at all! I can't turn off the music if I just want to hear the fishing audio but play my own tunes.

It is the only thing from the mobile game I wish they would add to the actual console one.

They have amazing attention to detail but dropped the ball on every common interaction and everything that is a menu or menu-adjacent.

@doppelgreener I think you could eat whole stacks of easter eggs on bunny day? But that's the only time I saw it.

@doppelgreener That's one that drives me nuts too. I'd love to have a few more waterfalls on my island, but the running water sound does drown out all else.

Here, this mocks up almost all the things I said and then half again.

@Tinkeringbell you can eat multiple fortune cookies at once in the mobile game. But you know, you pay real $ for those.....

Warning: you will be cursed with knowledge of What Could Be. There are no take-backsies.

Hahaha I'll look later tonight. For now I'm writing up e-mails to wrap up my workday and transfer some stuff to people so I can take my vacation next week.
Perhaps I should watch after vacation is over, that way I at least get to enjoy the game while vacation lasts ;)

1:40 PM
Shizueeeeee
wrong focus

@Tinkeringbell good plan

(I've read about/heard about most of these on the bell tree forums, so far they haven't really made me say that I can't play without them)

I think actually seeing them fixed in action will be another level entirely from just hearing about it.

Yeah. That's why I considered waiting until after...

@Tinkeringbell there is another way. Play No Man's Sky and try to build and power a base without using the prefab rooms....

1:44 PM
Look at doppel. Coming here and offering up fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. ;-)

@Rubiksmoose this is straight-up Apple of Eden business
Accept this knowledge and forfeit paradise

Animal Crossing qol issue will seem small things by comparison.

I'll stick with picking Animal Crossing apples for a while, I guess :P

@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе we could just play Star Citizen, but that doesn't make Animal Crossing less bad. There's still plenty of games with excellent UX.

Maybe I'll add some Stardew Valley in the mix this vacation.

1:46 PM
@doppelgreener There is nothing like having to delete half your base because you forgot a cable and now you can't add it without removing some walls. :P
Stick to the cuboids ^_^

Hello @DanMullin

Hey @ShadowWizardWearingMask

Don't worry we don't bite here.

Lol

glaring at @Journeyman

1:49 PM
I'll bite!
Hi :)

@doppelgreener Or maybe even Fallout where parts of your base would just randomly disappear.

looks up from chewing on @ShadowWizardWearingMask's ankle

ouch!
Bad dog!
:P

@Rubiksmoose 0_0
fallout 4?

1:49 PM
Yup XD

@DanMullin so, back to business.... what did you do here?

I've been using Stack Overflow forever, but only recently started trying to build my reputation on there. I didn't realize I would be given the privilage to review things and failed miserably at it. Anyone have advice for this abosolutly thrilling topic?

People can't downvote you here. ;)

That's good :)

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Obviously "Reviewed"

1:50 PM
@DanMullin everyone makes mistakes :D

@DanMullin Learn from your mistakes, you'll be allowed back into the queues later.

just take your time, and work things out

@Rubiksmoose yeah, but based on that example we might be able to help him out. :)

the system is designed to stop people who robo-review mainly

@JourneymanGeek nah @Dan isn't a robo

1:51 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask (no worries I was just being a jerk ;-) )

(fun fact. Mods can get review banned, and I once had it happen to me.. twice in a week(

@Rubiksmoose lol I know, I'm trolling people many times myself. :D

I got the privilege back today after being suspended from it for a week. Trying not to lose it again. I need those sweet delicious badges...lol

@JourneymanGeek ouch lol
@DanMullin pointing to ping above

@Rubiksmoose I've got a lot of Thoughts and Opinions about Bethesda and how it handles the Fallout series, and its games in general, and they amount to "they are a trash fire". But at this point I have Fallout 76 just laying out all of the Bad Stuff for me.

1:52 PM
Look for the red pings, @DanM

Or, most of it anyway.

@doppelgreener I love the universe, hate the bugs :D
on the other hand.

Really...I've just been coding for awhile and wanted to contribute back to the community that's helped me for years.'
What are the red pings for?

Cyberpunk 2077 hopefully will not have any game breaking bugs cause they bloody keep me waiting

@doppelgreener Yeah I think 76 definitely just made the argument for everyone. Just... like look at it. Yikes

1:53 PM
@DanMullin to let you know "this message is for you"

@DanMullin ask for who the ping pings. They ping for YOU.

Can I ping myself @DanMullin

I ping the pingers of all pings!

@Rubiksmoose The thing is all their games are approximately this quality and approximately off the mark, but people fix it with mods and then go play the fixed game and remember that and Bethesda gets the credit for it.

1:53 PM
@DanMullin With a userscript you can!

@DanMullin you can, let me show you....
@ShadowWizardWearingMask hello, I pinged myself now!

@ShadowWizardWearingMask
@ShadowWizardWearingMask on that post, I downvoted the answer because someone posted a lazy answer on an 11 year old post

@ShadowWizardWearingMask This sounds like some vague fantasy-guru advice. "When the notification rings, look for the red pings."

1:55 PM
@MetaAndrewT. hi

@Rubiksmoose yes!
@Meta we all tried :P
It's just a fantasy to ping yourself without editing
;)

@doppelgreener Yeah :(

tried until tired :P

@ShadowWizardWearingMask How does one normally handle someone answering a question that is over 10 years old? Or you know...a few years old. Seems like an attempt to dig up a popular post or something.

@DanMullin Make it a good answer and you need do nothing more.

1:57 PM
there's nothing wrong about answering a very old question, as long as the answer adds new insight than existing answers

There's no bias against necroing a post with a high quality addition

@DanMullin OK, so that was a good review action. You lost reputation point because downvoting answer "cost" 1 rep, it's not related to review.

Noted. That one in particular was lazy and incorrect lol

@DanMullin if the answer is correct and adding new information it's OK and valid.

@doppelgreener Honestly, F4 just drained every bit of interest in Fallout (and I preordered and played on day 1 and was super excited about it), F76 drained every remaining bit of respect I had for Bethesda.

1:58 PM
it can even be accepted if the asker is still active

@ShadowWizardWearingMask I see that downvoting on review costs a reputation point, but not when you downvote otherwise. Not sure why the difference. Only one point though

Anyway you were banned for failing audits, e.g. highly upvoted answer that you chose to downvote or flag. @DanMullin

downvoting answers always costs -1 though, downvoting questions is free

Yeah. I failed their fake test posts. I need to pay more attention.

@DanMullin indeed.
If you're not sure then just Skip.

1:59 PM
@Rubiksmoose Fallout 3 was showing up with major problems for me, then Fallout 4 went and just compounded them. Bethesda makes a big deal about big open worlds, but doesn't make them meaningful worlds—FO3 is just a big expansive wasteland with the same assets repeated 30 times each.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask is there a penalty for skipping too many?

@DanMullin yes, but skipping once in a while is fine.

@doppelgreener This. So much this.

If you see you skip too much then I assume review isn't good fit for you anyway. @DanMullin :)

The repeated assets are not actually meaningful; any bandit-filled grocery store is the same as any other. They're just dotted and there. And then once you're inside the city, the subway stations are repeated, the super-mutant camps are repeated, the buildings are repeated. There's no actual level design making things into unique challenges. It's just "let's slap down some stuff. That'll do."

2:01 PM
Very true :)

I'm tired, need....
!!/coffee

@ShadowWizardWearingMask brews a cup of Ristretto for @ShadowWizardWearingMask

Now for you, Mr. Mullin
sdc coffee DanM

@ShadowWizardWearingMask brews a cup of Espresso for @DanM

Nice job, Smokey.

2:01 PM
@doppelgreener There was no meaning to any of it. If the person wasn't a quest giver, they'd shoot you on sight and the game expects you to shoot people on sight without even investigating them. Even looking exactly like a [insert faction here] instantly shot on sight by [faction]. Then all quests being essentially fetch quests.

giving piece of spam to Smokey

@Rubiksmoose right
And Fallout 4's major feature was you build a base lego style, but that's not actually a contribution to wandering the wasteland. It's just a new, separate toy. They were getting distracted by "let's add more cool stuff".

One that was hella broken upon shipping

When I saw Skyrim had an infinite quest system I saw a problem: "okay, so they're doubling down on no meaningful differences. So it's not just the world, but the quset content too this time."

F4 was the most I've ever swung from an initial perception to hating the game. Just utter disappointment.

2:03 PM
@Rubiksmoose :(
Think I played Fallout 3 until there was a bug stopping me.

I spent so much time in Skyrim XD. I was Jarl of everything.
@ShadowWizardWearingMask So, 5 minutes? ;-)
(I played F3 all the way through and enjoyed it)

@Rubiksmoose I don't think the intro movie is that short :p

@Rubiksmoose nah, I always try any possible move, so took me 2 hours to reach the bugged door... ;)

or I might be remembering wrong Fallout...

I suspect I would like F3 less now that the flaws in Bethesda's game mentality are more obvious to me, but I think it will still be better than F4 for me.

2:05 PM
Skyrim was awesome, love the open world system.
I gained most my rep on gaming.SE from Skyrim, I think.
@DanMullin what games you play/ed? :)

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Skyrim was definitely cause for many a procrastinated homework assignment for me...

Not that I needed an excuse to procrastinate them. I do that pretty naturally on my own.

I have the older versions of fallout, but i've never played them. ony 4 and 76. Really liked both
skyrim was great
but same deal, never played the older ones

For me Skyrim caused cut in sleep hours. From 5 to 4.
And I stayed at 4 because I saw I can. :)

2:09 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask hah!

@Rubiksmoose you can try too, thank me later. :D
I played Skyrim 3 hours every night...

@user400654 I actually have the older versions as well. Also never played.
@ShadowWizardWearingMask oh dear. Not to be that guy who one-ups things, but I have definitely been there. I once went 4 days without sleep. I would highly not recommend trying this.

@Rubiksmoose well that's... impressive. My record is 60 hours without sleep.
But sleeping 4 hours per night is easier than not sleeping 4 days.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Much easier yes XD. And 60 hours is pretty much just as horrifying as 4 days health wise so I don't know whether to offer congrats or condolences. I was actually hallucinating at some points.

2:14 PM
@Rubiksmoose well it was during army training.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Ah well that seems much more reasonable. Mine was during exam week. Poor choices were made.

@Rubiksmoose yeah, so you passed those exams anyway? If so, huge kudos!
Also, what exams? Highschool, or college? @Rub

Most of them anyways XD. I did fail my CS one, in part because I never ended up finishing the project. College.

hmm well I kind of failed my first year, but not due to lack of sleep.
I switched to different place, and same degree there was much easier.

Smart choice I think.

2:23 PM
> Hey look at us, we're using our own site! yay!

@ShadowWizardWearingMask I’ve been playing video games since I was 5. Worked as a video game programmer for a few years at Savage Entertainment. My current favorite games include Skyrim, Horizon Zero Dawn, GT Sport, Dirt Rally 2.0, Dark Souls

@DanMullin Nice! HZD is on my to-play-eventually list. DS would probably just have me quit after 5 minutes.

DS is worth it! The challenge makes every small victory that much more rewarding. You do die a lot though. Like...a lot

2:40 PM
@Rob for your reference, and @Shog9's i.stack.imgur.com/7as21.png :D
@user400654 its a win still
better than "our own site is terrible, and needs to be ignored and allowed to burn to the ground"

@Rubiksmoose Just the other day, I watched a video from HBomberguy called Bloodborne is genius, and here's why. In it he talks about how the Dark Souls series actually, accidentally, conditions players to play the game the worst, most un-fun way — and that Bloodborne conditions players to play it the most fun way.

Ooo! I'll have to check that out because Bloodborne did actually pique my interest.

The video is long but I summarised that part here in these messages. That's the game dev chat room, so I'm talking about both the gameplay aspect the player sees, as well as the design aspect that the designer would care about.

@JourneymanGeek it's simply an act. If they were participating in the sites the way they seem to claim they are, they wouldn't need to tell us. It wasn't something that we had to be told about 4 years ago because we could all see it in action.
even now all i see is "This is the way it is, we're not budging."
on literally every topic

Though the message among those with the edit mark in the middle is meant to say “It makes trying to shield up and be as invincible as possible ... impossible.” at the end. I miss being able to indefinitely edit my chat messages. XD
The play conditioning issue could also be extended to tabletop RPG design! For example, D&D has fun ways to play, but it can often condition players to play in un-fun ways because that's just how the play conditioning unfolds. We get lots of questions about that on RPG.SE!
(see: abused gamer syndrome)

2:48 PM
@user400654 maybe you merely see yourself
@user400654 and well the company culture changed in that time. For the worse
Have you considered that the message is also for folks in the company who are still unsure?

unsure of what?

@doppelgreener Demon's Soul? Avoid healing? That game throws healing herbs at you like it rains.... By the end I couldn't pick them up because I had stack of 99 Full moon Herbs in my inventory... and Stockpile Thomas chest too.

@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе Yes! Demon's souls! Avoid healing! He talks about how and why

Also 'we are trying.' and in a sense they are trying to sell SE the network to a SO the company that isn't totally in touch

i will concede though that it appears as though they've listened at least for the reactions feature
for now
depends on what it turns into

2:51 PM
@doppelgreener now you got me intrigued.
Will listen to the video.

release feature you know will flop, then be the hero that removes it

@user400654 uh. So what has SE done lately that you are actually happy with?
What do you think they can improve?

i'd rather QA generally be left alone
improve chat, improve review systems, the tools

Cool. So post FRs. Sketch out how these things would work

they're already out there

2:55 PM
@user400654 If that's the way you choose to see things, nothing anybody here would convince you otherwise. I think the claim that the company intentionally released a subpar product just so they could save some face by retracting it as something that 1) doesn't make much sense 2) would take some pretty clear evidence to pull it from the realm of "conspiracy theory" 3) probably didn't even really work?

I have a mod only quality of life improvement I set out that I hope gets looked at
I would second additional work on chat

@Rubiksmoose I'm aware, i wasn't being completely serious

Improving chat would be something I would love to have happen.

@Rubiksmoose it probably works fine on teams
For some at least

Mhm
@user400654 my apologies. I missed that.

2:57 PM
I would start with having chat and meta on the left bar 🐶

wouldn't that interfere with their teams interface on the left, at least for SO where teams resides?

Move chat to common mark + responsive design + stacks

that was one of the first major changes to this network that i absolutely hated

@user400654 it also has careers sooooo
Meh

it felt like they took away a functioning navbar under the guise of making it more mobile friendly... just to fill the menu up with paid product service

2:59 PM
@user400654 maybe but that also means a dedicated period of active development

then they literally put a paid product menu at the top in place of the old navbar!
