When was the last time a question from this site was automatically unfeatured after 30 days by the Community user, and not by a human?

@SonictheMaskedWerehog you have a few minutes to figure it out

new syntax highlighting announcement

@Mithical nope. not yet

Was it because of the recent answer to my question that it was noticed by the team?

@SonictheMaskedWerehog about syntax highlighting?

7:30 AM
@YaakovEllis Yes

no. this has been in the works for a while. coincidence.

Would have been nice to have a tag, or at the very least a comment indicating "we're aware of this and are working on it". Prior to yesterday's tagging, it seemed like it had been ignored as there was no outward public indication that it was being looked into.
But it's nice to know now that it was indeed being looked into

@SonictheMaskedWerehog yup, agreed. A bunch of moving parts on this, but that would have been ideal. At least we were able to things in advance this time.

Q: Hot Meta Posts: Allow for mod removal, and thoughts about future improvements

Yaakov EllisWe have just released a new feature for Moderators across the entire network: the ability to remove a Meta post from showing up in the Hot Meta Posts (HMP) section of the Community Bulletin on the parent site. Some details about this feature: Moving forward, any meta posts that are added to HMP ...

@YaakovEllis woohoo! thanks SE team! :)

9:45 AM
@YaakovEllis technically.... One usually plans in advance 😁

@JourneymanGeek It's can be bad practice to share such plans though :P

@Tinkeringbell it depends. 😁

I'm not sharing my evil plans before I get to my evil monologue.

(might be popping in and out. On medical leave the rest of the week cause my eye decided to go all emotional on me, which lead to finding out I have a blocked ear, and my doc had an unexpectedly easy time convincing me I had to go on BP meds 😁)

Make sure that you have enough fluff that the protagonist be given a fair chance to escape... and some more if they fail at first

9:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek Sorry to hear that. Get well soon. Note that BP meds are a good thing if you need them and will prevent more serious problems later on ...

@DavidPostill runs in the family. 😁
I am more muffed by the recurring sore eyes tbh

@JourneymanGeek Can also be caused by stress, irregular working hours and/or sleep patterns, excess weight ...

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, this isn't the first time you mention those... Are you doing anything weird that causes them?
@JohnDvorak Of course! Have you ever seen me write on here? I can do fluffy :D

But can you monologue long enough for an average D&D rag-tag team solve a typical riddle of the sorts that would be normally found in an ancient temple turned into an evil overlord lair?

10:16 AM
Hmm. I have no experience with average D&D rag-tag teams, sadly. But if I run out of monologue, I can always start singing and introduce another problem :P

10:31 AM
Alternatively you could be a lawful good antagonist. Witness after witness after witness after witness... all scrutinized to the tiniest detail. That's gonna kill some time.

10:41 AM
... or just tons of paperwork, but it's harder to create enough tension that way... but I'd certainly be interested in a realistic d&d battle of law one-off

10:55 AM
@Tinkeringbell not really. There's really no common thing that triggers them
@DavidPostill uh. I usually say yes for all questions... But it's literally all of those 😁

@JourneymanGeek Oh, so increased CSF pressure?

Csf?
Maybe. No idea

11:10 AM
@JourneymanGeek well what did the doctor say?

NO MORE MONKEYS JUMPING ON THE BED

@Mithical Excuse me, are you a doctor?
Tells the monkeys to ignore Mith and continue jumping
Hmm, am I imagining the monkeys because the bed doesn't seem to move

@M.A.R. just thaty ears and sinuses were clogged 😁
Have me ear drops, antihistamines and no meds

@JourneymanGeek so where do the hypertension drugs come in?

11:33 AM
@M.A.R. you don't jump enough.
@Rob I think @M.A.R need the monkeys to jump on his bed, can you please help?
@YaakovEllis soon you'll have much more... ;)

11:44 AM
@M.A.R. oh. My gp noticed when I went in the time I got bitten

@Rob red parrot will get mad, better have @M.A.R jump alone.
I can't join and help him due to Corona and other reasons.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Just so you know, I wasn't the one that minded the monkeys. But yeah, I do get mad when people drag things out of the trash ;)

@Tinkeringbell I know, didn't even bother to check who put it there, since knew you'll pop first. :P
Dog's bite isn't less sore, but your eyes are sharper!

Yup
I have one every day at home, when not at office.
No coffee machine at work. :(
I had to order 100 more capsules.

Rob
1:52 PM
We had an espresso machine at work, that could make half a dozen different types, coin operated.

wow
"Had"... what happened to it?

🚽

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Some people used it normally, like a human being, and some OCD'd it; when their fascination with the whirling, clicking, and buzzing wore off the number of users dropped dramatically; resulting in the vendor pulling the machine.

2:10 PM
@Rob sorry to hear... but there are cheap machines as well, couldn't you buy one with the few others who share your love for a good and strong coffee? :)

Here it's just me and maybe one more, not enough to buy it ourselves, as it means hundreds of dollars for each. Even 100 is too much, probably.
I did buy a toaster.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Does it make good coffee?

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask It was the cheapest machine possible, not one of these soul suckers that hypnotizes the person; they were just simple, and fascinated easily.

@Rubiksmoose no :(
@Rob well, what's done is done...
Best coffee machine I remember was at the university. It also made awesome hot chocolate.
And it cost half a NIS, which is about 15 cents.

Rob
2:19 PM
Those are better, when they make creamy whipped HC too!

No no, no cream.
Just tasty coffee/chocolate.
Time and not knowing anything better back then might skew the memory though. :D

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Dang.

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask No no no, no. It wasn't about adding cream, it was whipped hot chocolate:
Like at a '70's gas station, near the rest room, for the Flavor Flav

2:37 PM
"fresh"

@Rob heh, never saw such machine.
@Rob only machines I saw next to rest rooms are for condoms.... don't remember seeing coffee machines in such location. :D
Anyway, how the machine whip it?

2:58 PM
I think that might be my first bug report on MSE. And all because I have not seen the classic(?) 1995 film The Usual Suspects.
Apparently.
@ShadowWizardWearingMask I'm assuming something like this inside the machine.

@Rubiksmoose I don't like it. Somehow the letters are weird and different and there's even more whitespace...
XD
But that's probably not a bug

@Rubiksmoose And now my first unexplained downvote on a bug report XD
@Tinkeringbell Alas, I suspect not.

I did hit up, right?
yes, yes I did.

hahaha

Is it just me though? I don't really like that much whitespace between lines, it somehow makes letters 'dance' a bit more?

Ugh, that's ugly. I hate the bloated 1.5 linespacing. Didn't we have studies already 20 years ago that linespacing should be either 1x or 2x line height, but most definitely not 1.5x?

@Tinkeringbell I've actually not spent much time mainsite yet. But from the comments I say you are not imagining things.
@Mithical You're not wrong :)

@Rubiksmoose Heh. Rep will be mine, I made it an answer :P meta.stackexchange.com/a/353529/369802

3:14 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask In North America the 'washroom vending machines' are inside the washroom - IE: If it's something you would buy in the washroom (male/female) the machine in question is located inside the washroom. The coffee and coke machines are outside because it doesn't take up space in the store and it's quicker for the vendor to affect repairs or swap out the machine.

@Rob Being outside means that 1 coffee/coke machine can cater to all genders ...
@Tinkeringbell It has been marked [tag: status-bydesign]. This is a disaster.

@DavidPostill Yeah, my inbox is kinda blowing up with all the sympathising. It's appreciated and annoying at the same time.

Speaking of numbers @Glorfindel is all over that. His numbers are definitely not rookie numbers. Leave some for the rest of us! ;-)
@DavidPostill I think disaster might be a bit of an exaggeration maybe? Certainly not ideal.

Well I hate it. I cannot think of 1 nice thing to say about that particular change. For a start it reduces my screen vertical real estate by what 50% or something?

26 mins ago, by Tinkeringbell
@Rubiksmoose I don't like it. Somehow the letters are weird and different and there's even more whitespace...
Same here! But just saying 'I hate it' is probably not going to convince people to change it back :P That said, I do hope to learn the reason why this was changed, that might make it easier to make a case for changing it back :)

3:29 PM
For me it is less readable.

@Rubiksmoose lol :D
@Rob interesting. Here the washrooms are usually small, so not enough room for machines.
What bug are you all talking about?

Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Here is the whipper in that machine, but the image is small and it's hard to see. Here's a way bigger image of a different machine, with a different but similar design.

A: New post formatting

Tinkeringbellstatus-bydesign The amount of whitespace between lines of text (line-height) has changed. I don't know if this is intentional, but I liked the old one better. @Rob oh. Eh. Nice! How... did you get those pics? Oh, found the source. rozum.com/robots-coffee-maker

Darn impressive to find the pics and know which part is which.
@DavidPostill Fair enough :) To be clear was not trying to undermine your opinion on the matter, by any means.

3:35 PM
Sorry folks, I was in a meeting. Our line spacing is ~1.6. W3C writes the following: "Many people with cognitive disabilities have trouble tracking lines of text when a block of text is single spaced. Providing spacing between 1.5 to 2 allows them to start a new line more easily once they have finished the previous one." We prefer more spacing between our lines for better readability. I think there are possible refinements between block level elements though, and plan on further refinement to header spacing now that this is in production. — Aaron Shekey ♦ 2 mins ago

Well on the face of it that seems like a fairly noble rationalle.

We're a question and answer site, when I think of cognitive disabilities I think of sites the government makes for these kind of people, not a site where experts answer questions?
I should look up what those guidelines consider a cognitive disability.

Unpopular opinion: It makes text easier to read
But it's bad for code, that's for sure.

@Tinkeringbell 1.6... that's why it reminds of me final year paper (12pt, Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing) :/

3:48 PM
@MetaAndrewT. You're right! My thesis had 1.5 too!

Q: Is there an optimal font size / line height ratio?

Yannick BlondeauWhen styling text on web pages, both font size and line height can be set. For example, the text of this post will be displayed using a font-size of 14px and a line-height of (about) 18px, set using the value 1.3em. Looking at other websites, it seems that a ratio around 1.2 is a common practice...

All in all though, I do like that quotes are now also a bit greyer? Though with the whitespace it's not that nice, I do like the grey color in general :)

Jeff AtwoodDo we really need a NO ELEPHANTS sign? I mean, isn't such a thing obvious? Would you go to a forum where everyone was communicating in French and type Hey French Dudes, I got a question but I don't know French so I'm just going to go ahead and ask it in English anyway?

We're a question and answer site, when I think of cognitive disabilities I think of sites the government makes for these kind of people, not a site where experts answer questions?
We can't afford to fund sending a teacher to people's homes, to provide them with years of schooling necessary to understand what's being said.

Q: Does Théoden actually say that he misses Gríma (his "old advisor") at one point in The Two Towers?

Pater D.At roughly page 155 of The Two Towers, assuming that the English original follows roughly the same page numbers as my rather sloppy Swedish translation from 1970, king Théoden mentions that he now misses "both my old and new advisor", as Gandalf is away at the moment, rushing around on Shadowfax....

The only thing that seems eye-jarring is the quotes are too gray, maybe I'd get used to that, maybe not

Accepting it then burdens my hands to hold the unwanted object and further the trouble to find somewhere to put (chuck) it. --- Just take your junk and go, it's not like it's a wad of cash.
But if you two are now far ahead, well that's my loss.

Anybody else getting a "connection is not private" notice when going to data.stackechange.com?

I get a cert warning that I can override

Same here.

Interestingly enough, I can't reproduce it after overriding the warning.

Q: NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID error at data.stackexchange.com

Thomas MarkovI'm currently getting a "connection not private error" over at the Stack Exchange Data Explorer (using Chrome). I have verified that my date and time settings are correct, and another user has confirmed receiving the same error.

Already being reviewed ;)

@Tinkeringbell Excellent, thanks!

Wasn't me, Yaakov added that tag ;) I just share it here ;)

I am really not liking the new spacing, or at least I haven't gotten used to it yet.
