@Dharman hi

Hi Ann, how are you?

not so good
you?

Not so bad :D

hopelessly scrolling through the questionaire

Why hopelessly?

12:07 AM
you know

Are you not happy with the mod candidates?

rolls eyes
no

12:21 AM
@AnnZen When is this screenshot from if you don't mind me asking?

yesterday

@AnnZen Yesterday as in 20th or 19th?

UTC time, 30 minutes ago was yesterday

Then I can't see these deletions.
I thought I could see all deletions, but apparently some are restricted.

You can see delections on user's profiles?

12:30 AM
I can see some.
This is your user profile as seen by me

Are there unclear rules as to which deleted posts you can see on other profiles?

I am not sure... If you find them please let me know because I am interested.

find what?

Description of these rules
It's actually too late for me so I will go to bed. I can barely think

@AnnZen The Tavern doesn't use Room 6's (Python) Salad Language so people might not know what you mean by rubarb here

Rob
@JourneymanGeek Forgot fingerprint recognition: Alipay nose print app aims to lure four-legged customers.

@Dharman short answer: history auto hides deletions on history after a certain period of time and also its basically by design. I don't know if the specifics are ever completely laid out (and again I would assume that is on purpose)

@LinkBerest 1 day is less than 60
@LinkBerest On your profile says "deleted main account". How much rep was on it before it was deleted?

1:05 AM
On SO ? this amount (I didn't use my main account on SO when I started - made this on later to test out SO in relation to teaching - liked worldbuilding with it so kept it over the original).

yes

....yes? huh? I answered: on SO - its whatever I have right now (I really don't care). I didn't start on SO - I started on Information Security and stats (cross validated) - I deleted the account I used on them (to be fair I've also just been much less active in general & I think Link ended up having way more rep on this site)

Did you delete any account where the rep is higher than the rep on the corresponding sock puppet account?

wasn't a sock puppet

@LinkBerest a lot of folks never started on SO :D

1:11 AM
what about "deleted main account and only keeping this sock puppet"

@AnnZen some people have alternate accounts

just had two accounts (didn't want name attached at first because people at work might realize it was me) but I used sock puppet because that was the quickest way to explain it in a profile

"Sock Puppet" kinda means you're using it to get around restrictions

@LinkBerest Not really what I was looking for. I would like to know which parts of rep history are available to me and which don't.

I use a second account at work cause I don't want my mod account on a PC I don't control ._.

1:12 AM
@Dharman It must be really late for you now.

2am

also didn't think anyone would look at a profile honestly (I rarely do - though I use activity a lot when looking for posts by people sometimes)
@Dharman oh, rep history over deletion stuff....might know where that is (if I find I'll link) but its similar if I remember

I though sock puppet account is now a known way of saying alternate account.

^ why I used it - but not the proper term
again - I started on information security. where there is a clear definition of "sock puppet" :)
@JourneymanGeek I see your robot self on there from time to time but yeah. I used superuser a lot back in the day - stupid windows - so finding SO was actually really late for me (as far as my use of SE as a whole is concerned)
on the opposite side: once I found SO I found chat and I've never stopped chatting :)

@LinkBerest What do you think makes SE chat systems special?

1:22 AM
It replaces IRC? Nothing really - just really fun people (and puppies) around that make it worth using

irc?

Internet Relay Chat (an old chat thing we used to use in the 90s)

It's basically web based IRC with the only reply system that makes sense 😁

Rob

@Rubiksmoose Wet socks? :P

@JourneymanGeek you are correct sir! :)
I still remember many hours on Undernet trying to figure out problems with our Linux/Unix systems (then Open Projects then Freenode...but I kinda moved to slashdot and Perlmonks a little after that)

2:12 AM
Practically the closest modern equivalent of IRC is matrix but it's newish and still in active development

well, sure. If you ignore all the IRC channels that still exist (I think Freenode still exists even)

but there's a lot to be said for replies as lazy threading, as opposed to slack's full threading/subroom system and replies being quotes + replies
@LinkBerest IRC isn't modern. :D
which for many purposes isn't a bad thing

@Aibobot for certain definitions of "modern" ;)

but the barrier for entry is high.

I mean I just saw an AD for helping me learn "modern Cobol" and about fell out of my chair laughing

2:16 AM
you need to run a server + a compatible services package. There's no default web client...

yeah, I had to adjust my expectations of what new programmers will know when I started teaching because I came from a generation where anyone who was interest in technology had to have a much higher knowledge just to use standard tools like IRC (versus opening a browser and clicking a few things)

Services can be a single point of failure
also, compared to running an IRC server (which I have done a few times) running matrix is pretty clean :D
@LinkBerest ugh, or just wget -0 foo.sh | bash or running a docker container
they have their place but it feels like no one wants to read or write documentation

So the fact that new programmers have trouble using GitHub within an IDE is sometimes hard for me to appreciate as difficult.
considering the version controls I grew up on including just raw git commands if I was lucky - oh, dear god the custom version controls! The horror...... the horror

lol
I probably forgot what little git I used to know :(

I forget and re-remember git about once a week

2:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek @Aibobot Double ping?

you can ping either if you know I'm here
otherwise I'll get around to it

we had one system (on unix) which used to make a backup of each file when you called it based on the system time (would save: <filename.extension>.<currentdatetime>) ... but the person somehow made it a 12 hour clock instead of a 24 hour clock so if you saved something at 11am and 11pm (cause IT never works nights when systems go down) everything would be over-written
..... We discovered this when working late....after over-writing the 11am save....then realized that was the one we needed to revert to

oh, current job is also all sorts of fun, and covered under all sorts of TLAs ._.

well some parts of the software industry will never change :)

@LinkBerest IBM Enterprise COBOL for z/OS runs on the IBM z15 - that's about as modern and powerful as one can get. Financial software, such as banking and credit card applications, medical and travel, runs on COBOL.
HackerRank Article and Wikipedia COBOL says one reason it's used is it runs quickly on Mainframes, probably due to 60 years of tweaking and billions of optimized lines of code.
But, yes it's humorous; also true, there is modern COBOL.

or that its designed for much lower resource machines than modern ones :D

7:05 AM
@rene bounty can be awarded

@Mithical done

:thumbsup:

Rob
@Aibobot It runs on Raspberry Pi, the free training and waiting jobs is because of the lack of programmers legacy systems can't be upgraded; rewriting everything (and recertification) also would take a long time.
It's a case of: If it isn't broke don't fix it, meets it's broken so fix it.

hi all

@Luuklag Hey :)

@Luuklag hi you
@Tinkeringbell hi you too

@M.A.R. Hey to you too then.

How's everyone doin'?

Slow.

9:08 AM
@JNat hi you 3

needing a break from VBA ;)

@Tinkeringbell Same
@Luuklag have a kitkat

@Luuklag Want to try Magik?

@Tinkeringbell if that gets my job done before vacations start that be great ;)

@Tinkeringbell sharing the pain? :D

9:10 AM
Blegh. There's this thing that has been in the codebase for 4 months, that's related to a task that users have performed probably thousands of times while testing the entire upgrade...

And now that the massive upgrade is released, it's causing data issues. So I'm doomed to babysit the production data now with a script. It's boring work.

._.

The programming language itself is kinda okay, though it's annoying I can't access the source code at times...
@Luuklag I don't know when vacations start, and I don't know what your job is :P

(and... 2 hours to go for official end of day)

So no promises ;)
@Aibobot \o/
I have about 5 more to go ;)

My vacations start on monday. The job is to basically program an entire existing model into excel/VBA

9:12 AM

from?

Ah. Well I do know it can make excel thingies, so perhaps it can do your job. But before I've got that figure out, I think your vacation would be over again ;)

PDF
its a published model, but the source isn't available to us
and I'm the only one on the team with some remote programming capabilities, so I'm screwed ;)

@M.A.R. \o

looks like I have a fan on MSO btw. Getting a daily complementary downvote
for the last three weeks now

If it's the same person a mod can probably see that.

9:20 AM
@Luuklag aww, that's so sweet!

@Tinkeringbell I custom flagged one of my posts already, so one of you will get to that some time

@Luuklag Not us, I think, if it's MSO... or you're gambling on the person handling the flag being Chris? ;)

MSO or MSE?

MSE, im misstaken ;)

How does it feel to go to sleep every night, knowing that a human being on the other side of the planet is remembering you?

9:21 AM
These recent meta posts about suspended due to serial <insert verb> seems coincidentally weird

@MetaAndrewT. Posts?
I saw only one?
The one with the very very upset African-American dude
Which is apparently deleted now

I thought he referred that person that was upset they couldnt vote in the election

AnnZen visits chat often, I think they're just in the process of becoming a meta.SE reg

Ugh, I stand corrected, not really suspended, but about the serial voting itself
1 on SO, 1 on MSE, and another... on HAM.SE :/

That almost rhymes
And it does feel like just a coincidence

AI will be racist since it will know/learn based only on the developer who wrote it. It's by design.

oh I was thinking of Tay

we need a ban on racist developers then ;)

@Aibobot nah, that was just typical Microsoft glitch.
Like Windows ME.

9:47 AM
@Luuklag Didn't they already? I wasn't paying attention but IIRC there were these two bots that just started talk to each other in another language

Could very well be @M.A.R., I don't keep track that much

If an old (~1 year) bug currently has [status-review], while I believe the bug is fixed (and should have [status-completed]), what can or should I do? Should I inform someone of this? (and who?)

@Discretelizard People have been using custom moderator flags (if the bug in on MSE and not your sites meta), and we just leave them in the queue until someone with more expertise than us comes along ;)
If you can link to an answer/post/comment/something that confirms the fix, we might even tag it ourselves if it's obvious.

@Tinkeringbell Ok thanks, I'll use a flag. The custom flag itself may confirm the fix, because the bug was in the flagging tools.

11:59 AM
That should work! :) Thanks!

@Tinkeringbell Ah, wait, it isn't that easy. I believe the issue was specific to VLQ or NaN flags. Ah well, you can try to confirm or leave it.

Now I'm curious. I guess work will have to wait ;P
I don't see any flag yet :(

You should now.
It's about this question, btw (in case others are curious)
10
Q: Close question dialog half off screen when called from flag handling interface

goldilocksThe picture below tells the story; that's the whole browser window. There is a vertical scrollbar but no horizontal one. I have this zoomed in (as in, normally, in the browser, it snaps to at 150%) so the width fills the screen (you can see where Home is top left), but I think the problem is it...

Ah yeah... that's going to take some work to reproduce ;)

12:38 PM
heh
this is not spam and not offensive, shouldn't have been reported.
Bot that reports crappy answer will flood the chat....

1:05 PM
Woah. Apparently, next month, we're getting flying cars! (okay, clickbait XD)
pal-v.com/en/explore-pal-v < that one will have to pass some final inspection sometime in August, after which it technically is allowed on the public roads :D

@Tinkeringbell I recall watching a Discovery show about this a couple of years back

@Tinkeringbell I saw just a side profile of the body of the car and I was like "How the hell is that thing going to fly?" And then the next picture scrolled and I saw the massive helicopter blades on top and I audibly laughed.

@Luuklag I must've missed that. I haven't watched Discovery for quite a while, they're shows aren't as interesting anymore :(

I mean, in the end, nobody's going to laugh at how your car looks when you fly to work
But the design still is a little funny

@Spevacus Hey, and no more trouble parking! Just drop in from above, instead of trying from the side!

1:09 PM
@Tinkeringbell might have been 5 years or so

"Tink why do you always park at the top of the parking garage?" "Well..."

@Luuklag That's possible, apparently the first test flight was somewhere in 2012
@Spevacus Right on top of the solar panels!

@rene this does bring more attention to my answer there, free points for me :)

@Luuklag downvotes

I do kinda want one though, even though I can't even drive a normal car normally.
@Spevacus Ah, caught the culprit!

1:11 PM
@Tinkeringbell as in you don't have a license, or you just suck at it?
@Tinkeringbell hahaha

@Luuklag I have a license. I also had a very minor accident that stuck between my ears.
I've had quite a few classes to get rid of the fear, so now I can drive a handicap car, but not a normal one.

@Tinkeringbell thats the reason a collegaue of mine always avoids highways now.

Yeah... mine kinda developed over time because I didn't have many places to drive to anyhow, and the places I did go indeed didn't involve the highway... At one point, I hadn't driven a car for 2 years, I'd be supertense if anyone else was driving, and I'd also had trouble just crossing the street walking.

And I only realized all of that after I learned to drive relatively normal again.

@Luuklag you're welcome

its all about perspective. One day you might look back and think how silly it could be

1:16 PM
We'll see. Right now, I'm waiting for my 'own' leased car... It would've arrived late this month but due to corona it'll now have to wait until early October.

talking about waiting. I have to wait 11 days for a mechanic to come take a look at my dishwasher :(

Oh no! That's barbaric, having to do dishes by hand for 11 days.
You have my sincerest sympathies.
Isn't it something you can fix?

Nope, some bogus sensor I think. It keeps wanting to drain the water, and nothing else
And its a rental house, so the "pensioenfonds" who owns it is supposed to get it fixed, for which they have a contract with the factory mechanics

:\ Did you unplug/plug it in again already?

hahahaha

1:23 PM
@Luuklag Ah. Time to get your own house?

you should get a job as support agent
@Tinkeringbell If rent and kids, and "stufi" weren't so expensive I would

Kinda did retail (tuincentrum) for a while... including service desk.
'did you water your plant already'?
@Luuklag Ai, yeah...
I guess I was lucky, stufi was still a gift.
And no kids, yay! :D

Mine was for a large part, but doing 7 years of study does end you up with a nice debt

Ugh. I at least hope it came with nice stories and a good job!

Not a bad job, I consult at a firm that specializes in sustainable agriculture
and plenty of good stories

1:32 PM
Those last ones are the most important ones ;)

was it the - sign that stops smoke from giving feedback?

I think so, yes.

Following most commands with - should silence them ye

Either I'm not allowed to do that and it's now not telling me, or it worked :P
metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/post/254292 < ah yeah, it's after the command, not before it :P

@Tinkeringbell Mods are automatically privileged, but I don't think that one was a command, haha. Try again with just "tpu" and see how it replies.

1:40 PM
XD

I think you might need a metasmoke account.

Look at the thing I just linked... it kinda worked :P My borked command is now a comment :P

If you don't put your arms through the sleeves and just let it drape across your shoulders it could be a cape... of sorts.

I've done that when it got too warm to really be wearing it but didn't have any place to put it

@Mithical It's the black... it looks cape-y if you don't zoom in.
Especially with part of the hair... that could be the collar.

There is a certain perverse joy from making a comment of exactly the allowed amount of characters. A bit like making a one-liner that would be faster to write and read with two lines, but is kept anyway because it's BEAUTIFUL.
It does give a slight feeling that there may be more to life, however...

@Discretelizard If it's that long maybe it should be an answer?

Rob
@Tinkeringbell I came back with a link to make that point, but I see we are sweeping it under the rug; so I'll drop it - the conversation could have gone as far back as the sweatshirt. Nothing further.

@Rob It seems the sweatshirt is occupied, hence me choosing the empty space under the rug.
