And honestly... How many of you that do use SO find thank-you comments the problem that needs fixing because it takes to much effort to flag them for deletion?

I'll flag them because... why not. Then just... move on. If I were a very novice user or an "audience member" I'd simply ignore the comments entirely. It's really not even noise when you have sunglasses (earmuffs?) on... so to speak.

i flag them to inflate my flag count
just like all the "Why teh downvotes!" comments

Yeah.. I think that confirms what I thought a little: people that do the moderating on SO don't really see these comments as a problem, they're one of the easiest to 'fix'. Keeping up with e.g. bad questions is much harder, it seems.

Yet this change seems made for the people that write those 'bad questions', those 'outsiders'.
People ain't going to like that.
It's missing a big huge selling point to the part of the community that does a lot of the moderating on SO.

Sure, having less "thanks" comments will mean less flags overall... But that doesn't mean less time spent slogging through the flag queue.

^That.

8:14 PM
If you're right, and the workflow is just... Read comment, delete if necessary, dismiss flag as helpful, queue up the next flag... Then the time spent is super tiny, in comparison to super detailed custom mod flags that could take several minutes (or longer, intriciacies-depending) handling. Or content disputes, having to roll back to the best revision, lock the post (or suspend a vandal) and clean up their mess... It's just not the best thing to tackle right now.
I think I... exhausted the subject, though.
I'm not complaining about it (aside from it cluttering the timeline and not being anonymous, I dislike that) but I just don't think it's too necessary.

if mods weren't able to burn through hundreds/thousands of "Thanks!" comment flags they wouldn't be able to brag about handling hundreds/thousands of flags!
been a long time since i've seen a mod talk about how many flags they're handling tho

My stats have been dismal lately, not enough drama. I'd like to keep it that way.
I did a grand total of 16 this week on MSE, 0 today.

How about IPS?

Even less.

I mostly only saw that in r17, js chat, but that place is dead now

8:18 PM
8 flags this month. I think it doesn't help that the comment bot we had is down.

and... i guess most of the mods who used to hang there aren't mods anymore
: /

@Tinkeringbell limericks are much better

I do comment and vote a lot on IPS though, and I'm often the first one to push things into the LQP queue... other mods handle the flags on those posts if they take too long.

@Tinkeringbell That and activity as a whole plummeted.

@Mithical I really like this one:

8:20 PM
A dozen a gross and a score...

plus three times the square root of 4

is nine squared and nothing more

:(
You got it wrong. It's 'is nine squared and not a bit more'

And skipped the middle two lines

That too....

8:22 PM
ah, the latter is worse than the former

@Mithical And yeah. If we get 2 questions a day it's busy.

user707129
@Tinkeringbell Ooh, looks fun

user707129
What's the actual question?

user707129
:( I thought it was an actual maths equation question

8:36 PM
I mean, you can check the math

user707129
Sure

user707129
Correct

Yep, resolves to 81 in both cases. So it's a perfectly valid equation.

user707129
Can't you make it a bit harder? Like 3 times the root of 3? Or even 3 times the root of -1 which is even more fun :)

that'd ruin the limerick

8:50 PM
🚽
^ should be a reaction

user707129
@user400654 ...

user707129
@Mithical Who cares about the limerick...

me
and @ArtOfCode
Art cares very much about limericks

yeah, imean, just let us choose from he whole selection of reactions, why be restrictive if we're gonna allow reactions

Y'know, one of the most requested features we have from new users is for downvoters to optionally explain why they're downvoting. Why not expand this system to provide the same thing for bad posts? If the dev work has already been done, let's give these users what they want! ...Cue angry users wanting to know why they got negative reactions along with the downvotes. — fbueckert 2 mins ago

@Mithical You don't need the brackets, according to the order of operations, the equation would have the same result

@user400654 We should go all-in, Discord style.

This is even worse than the "Hot Network Post" banner. In addition, it can be used to taunt other users "You're getting a thanks.. that's it." — Scratte 38 secs ago
haha

user707129
@Mithical agreed

just acompany every downvote i cast on an answer with a happy reaction

8:59 PM
Press thanks, downvote post.

unfortunately, reactions aren't private, so it'd reveal who is downvoting

Here's hoping the backlash is addressed. Would feel kinda bad if it were ignored. Catija's a real trooper, commenting on almost every answer to that Meta SO post.

9:25 PM
rofl 'thanks' really?
xD
/me sighs
Soooooo found a accepted answer on U&L, with loads of other answers, it's the lowest voted (or near it), it has a huge security flaw in it
/me sighs again
'Why did you downvote! why not leave a comment explaining it'
there's a comment explaining it from 2016. if no ones going to pay attention....

Was there ever a postmortem on the New Contributor icon?

Q: Are there any resilient data that the "new contributor" indicator helped to push site quality yet?

πάντα ῥεῖMuch as the question title says. I am not an SEDE crack enough to research about that myself. But my guts say that the recently introduced indicator didn't help much to improve the quality of questions or answers from new contributors. Well, it might encourage and remind to play gently with the...

no official ones that i've seen

@fbueckert There was a request for feedback on the feedback, which was edited to include a response in another post, by Tim Post, so there's this link to a link, ...

Q: Why does SE not react to the feedback it has asked for?

user399077In Come Take a Look at our New Contributor Indicator! we were asked for Questions? Suggestions? Feedback? Let us know. There was plenty, mostly not in support of the feature. Maybe it is hidden somewhere in a comment, but I don't see anybody from SE reacting to the feedback given by the c...

Short version: There was a lot going on last year, and a bit at the beginning of this year; leaving someone else to undertake the task, should they feel so inclined.
