but getting it popular needs...

I don't think this is going to end well. Once Robert step down, Boltclock will be the oldest elected mod and he made a statement here meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/389906/…

well qualities that seem lacking

It was Experts Exchange, without the evil. Hence the reference.

@JourneymanGeek Siphoning users off SO will be a great start, and with the recent turn of events, the spice will flow easily.

@JohnDvorak a few folks tried that

12:01 PM
where's jon skeet when you need him

there was this discourse site...

I think even Jon Skeet cant get an answer from Stack Exchange Inc.

@JohnDvorak I guess it comes down to - aside from politics, what can you offer that SO can't? How do you build value for your users?

@JourneymanGeek kids ask stuff at Discord servers, if that's of help to anyone.

@john and in my time, IRC

12:03 PM
You don't say that, because IRC has no end.
Whenever Discord falls apart, IRC will be there.

I mean building an alternative SE isn't hard but the server space would be expensive

@JourneymanGeek Aside from politics, there's not that much reason to make a clone.

@JohnDvorak those'r very well put thoughts, but... you know what kids at Discord tell me whenever I go mad saying them "go ask Stackoverflow because it's for that purpose"
they tell me "but we're a community"
Now I've no idea what's that, because it means nothing for me. But there they are.

I hate chat. Chat is awful for long term Q&A.

talking about making a SE clone inside of SE chatroom.

12:06 PM
There is a ton of chat out there and no one is a threat for SO.

The community still exists, and if the only way to keep the community is mass exodus, so be it.

@aloisdg I love chat. Just not for end state Q&A

Should we really see that, or more in a "stay the heck away from that dumpster fire" kind of way?

I joined, could be worse
Just people pissed off, it'll go calm

It's lively and maybe a little jumpy to conclusions, but who isn't these days?

@JohnDvorak hopefully we arn't!

12:11 PM
I'm uprego at freenode by the way (before this gets moderated).

well lively is good

@StephanS for stuff

@Bart we need safety glasses before we go in ....

@rene I fear I'm not going to be of much help. :D

calling it a dumpster fire is kinda an understatement

12:20 PM
@Bart I beg to differ ;)

At the risk of being inappropriate, I just read up a bit on the whole Monica/Mod situation ... wtf is happening to this network? What a shitstorm. Every time I come back here I walk out a bit more disillusioned.

@Bart let me know if you find out

@Bart do tell when you find out wtf is happening
none of us have a bakers clue either

Not sure I wanna anymore @JourneymanGeek . I still come in here from time to time for he people I know. But holy corporate crapfest people.

@Bart The short answer to what is happening: a lot of .. something, and nobody really knows what to expect.
Predictions range from the dawn of a new age to the unfolding of the fabric of spacetime.

12:23 PM
@JohnDvorak the latter would be unfortunate. do you know how difficult it is to fold that shit?

@Bart The guy who made the first one has promised to keep it in place, and also that anyone would have available a path that leads to their continued existence. But no promise that everyone would be willing to tread that path.

@Bart The conflict that inevitably happens when a site based around community needs to transition to making money and makes policy changes to effect that.

12:39 PM
Are you okay @JourneymanGeek? :D This is the second two letter @ I see now from you

@Bart sorry
having a fast moving conversation elsehwee

While this dumpster fire may provide some temporary heat to a chilly situation, it is better to promote a general culture of being nice to each other and adjusting the climate control systems in a rational manner. Dumpster fires are not good for the environment and increase long-term costs for everyone.

Something like a summer of love? /s

1:03 PM
@RobertColumbia I hope for dawn's light after a night that seems to have stretched on for years.
But I do not know where the sun is.

@RobertColumbia if this wasn't an old issue I'd agree, but this has been going on for years, nothing happening here is new or honestly interesting. It's just the latest incarnation of a conflict that's been around for about as long as I've been using SO.
The unwillingness of SE to just decide who they want to be is the core of the issue IMHO.

@Mgetz You mean that SOinc is playing two fiddles at once, and both of them badly?

@JohnDvorak not sure it's exactly two, but yes. They are trying to keep the experts and the newbies happy and they are failing spectacularly at both.

it's more like they think they're playing fiddles but actually they're trying to eat them

I do suppose that is true
@IanKemp LUL
Thank you for the mental image. I needed it and I love it.

1:12 PM
To me part of the issue (but not the whole) is that they are trying to be a for profit company. That inevitably leads to compromise policies that favor corporate security over the security and stability of the community.

@410 you can probably update the main question on meta.se
particularly since it is related

410
Good idea. Rand beat me to it.
Not fond of the licensing being included in that post, but whatever.

@410 nor am I

@410 yeah, but it's an example of the endemic issues that are going on. I think what they are going for is a clear list of gratuitous grievances.
Off topic thought: Maybe the mods should unionize?

410
1:16 PM
They are not employees

@410 and yet they are performing a critical function to the operation of the business

@Mgetz not critical enough in SE inc's eyes
besides, mods aren't paid, they're volunteers

@IanKemp Neither are grad students but they are allowed to unionize

@Mgetz fair enough

@IanKemp it'll be critical soon enough when it stops being performed

1:20 PM
Should we create a tag for moderator resignations? Maybe or even ?

@IanKemp that's not kind to the goats.

be nice

@JourneymanGeek I'm skeptical.
@Mgetz Whoa, that already happened?

@M.A.R. nah just the sort of headline they (actually The Register) would use.

@RobertColumbia I'm currently not a moderator but ... no

@RobertColumbia I'm currently not a moderator but . . . no

@RobertColumbia does this seem...
funny to you?

@M.A.R. ok
@JourneymanGeek overall no, I was trying to introduce a little humor to help keep things in perspective.

@JourneymanGeek tbf it never hurts to stop and laugh at yourself for a bit, it usually helps defuse the tension

if you can't laugh about something you love going down the toilet, what sort of life are you living?

@ShadowTheCoffeeWizard My hammer is too heavy :/

@JourneymanGeek I read that. I admire you. I really do.

Was there something about SO mods controlling featured tag now?
Did not last long.

@IanKemp that's one of the weirder reasons to quit watching comedy

yawnn... to late the featured tag removed was. Read already it I had.

3:35 PM
fortunately Tim has the blue [moderator] tag on his profile so it's technically not a non-moderator fiddling with the featured tag (as opposed to the "no hot meta" announcement saying that mods will decide what's featured)
it's probably in the interest of transparency and open discourse

3:51 PM
If a current moderators wants to feature this (we're in the process of assisting everyone that wanted to step down this AM) then they can. As the current mods have to deal with it being featured, it's up to them. — Tim Post ♦ 3 mins ago

@KevinB not particularly moved by the SE-versus-mod drama, eh?

no, not really. it's just more of the same. They're not gonna listen, why bother trying to make it something. it'll all be nuked in a week or sooner anyway

4:25 PM
I'd say the fact that more than a dozen mods have gone *poof* makes a difference, but meh

I think the bad publicity will force them to write another blog post about how it makes them sad, and then promise to fix things, and then make it even worse... again. Either way, it's entertaining to watch unfold.

6:36 PM
Do you think the SE offices are on fire, with every employee panicking, and last minute barainstorms improvised to find strategies for patching the moderator leaks, or do they just go: "well, things will sort themselves out"? I wonder how the mood is, over there...

410
They are busy closing huge deals
And welcoming the new CEO who officially takes the position tomorrow.

welcoming?!

410
ok, also including.

We'll see how that goes

I'm pretty sure they have a plan but no battle plan survives contact with the enemy a famous field marshal once said. So I think a few plans have to be adjusted. I'm not going to predict in which direction as that would only add to the speculation.

410
6:43 PM
Too bad we don't have Augur Stack Exchange to help with predictions.

dim
@410 Yes, I had seen that... And I was also wondering how it could be like to be appointed CEO in such a messy situation. But of course, this is only relevant if they aren't like "well, things will sort themselves out"... Anyway. I hope they will sort themselves out.

410
CEO doesn't have to deal with any of that. He can delegate to someone who delegates to someone who delegates to someone.
And go on figuring out the next round of investment, IPO, hyper-growth, or the source of more huge deals to close.
i hAve not yet seen this kind of cApitAlizAtion

dim
@410 I'm wondering that, as well (yes, I'm wondering a lot of things)... Because if, at some point, this mess leads to less site visits (because it drives people away), and therefore a devaluation of the ads revenues, the CEO will sure have to think of a strategy without delegating that much. And StackExchange isn't such a huge company, I'm not sure the organizational chart is that big.

410
I don't expect any noticeable traffic impact. People will still be getting their programming work done, or puzzling over chess problems, or over math homework, etc... hardly noticing any meta, CoC, license, blogs, ...
The majority of visitors are non-logged in non-users.

7:02 PM
@410 I do suspect the lack of moderators will be quite visible

410
On some sites, yes. But those are not centrally important sites.
Take the list of sites, sorted by traffic. Close the bottom half of them. Voila, 50% less headache in terms of mod appointments / elections / resignations.

dim
So, basically, you're saying what happens now won't have any impact? Well, I was afraid to hear that, but, well...

410
Well-trafficked websites have a way of kind of going. People still have fun on MySpace, blog on LiveJournal, chat in the abandoned support rooms of Windows utilities...

@410 ouch
If they close PPCG and puzz... just after they decorated it with paint... that'd make me unhappy

7:18 PM
Perhaps I'm overly sensitive, as a mod on several smaller sites, but . . . Astronomy, for instance, has a substantial number of views per day, looking at the analytics. And when there's a major event - the Event Horizon Telescope announcement, the paper on Planet 9, the first gravitational wave detection - we become fairly visible on the Internet (~tens of thousands of views per day) when it comes to dealing with those topics. Many thousands of views per day seems reasonable.

is there a shortlist of those "moderator tools that never got implemented"? I keep seeing mentions of it over the years but I haven't seen them yet

no, just longlists
instantrimshot.ra
Actually been better about working on 'em this year than in... several before it. But, still, backlog.

well, any list, I'm just thinking: is it easy to find what users want implemented? does the company see it (often enough)?
> Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site.

rest in peace, Real Audio

7:34 PM
(or it could just be that it's banned here or the site decided to just block other regions from any internet access, or I'm not in on that joke)
I think it would be beneficial for the society of users of SE to have a neat compiled list of desired features that a Q&A site like SE would be wise to have to be useful and productive for its users >.>

RealAudio is a proprietary audio format developed by RealNetworks and first released in April 1995. It uses a variety of audio codecs, ranging from low-bitrate formats that can be used over dialup modems, to high-fidelity formats for music. It can also be used as a streaming audio format, that is played at the same time as it is downloaded. In the past, many internet radio stations used RealAudio to stream their programming over the internet in real time. In recent years, however, the format has become less common and has given way to more popular audio formats. RealAudio was heavily used by the...

So there's a conference coming up around here. When making a registration form, I thought one box for the name would be best. Indeed, for one of the registrants len(name.split()) == 5 so it was the right choice.
But how do you sort them for displaying on the conference website?

410
Since I'm not assuming any particular format, the only option I have is to sort by the full name, whatever string is entered.

sort fifo

perhaps you could ask for an alternative box, "name for sorting, preferably last name if applicable"

@410 Either you don't and you just display in the order entered, or you sort them alphabetically from the start of the string
you could also sort them by name.split()[-1] but that's less predictable

410
8:05 PM
Sorting is useful if someone looks for a person they know among the participants. Would be untidy otherwise.

@AndrasDeak have you ever seen that in the wild?

410
Anyway, sorting from the start is what I did but someone emailed to say this is a mistake or something.

@user1306322 Nope :) But I always see "first name"/"last name" in the wild, which is hardly along best practices

410
One of my graduate school buddies had one name.
Was from Mongolia iirc.

often I see alphabetical sorting in sections of people with the same title or every name has a title and it's sorted by importance

8:07 PM
What's worse is that commerce sites will ask for my names separately, then write Andras Deak on the package, and then my post office might not find it because they expect Deak Andras

I recently got a package addressed to just my name and zip code without any address, successfully
international, somehow dhl lost my address line coz their system couldn't handle cyrillic symbols and just erased them

nice

and the packaging somehow gained 800 grams of weight in transit, I suppose coz dhl weighed the contents without the big cardboard box or something, and here they weigh the entire thing
the lady at the post office said usually mail services attach a special document about this fact but they didn't
I asked why, she said no idea
my first time ordering something from abroad btw, not sure if this is the norm or just me

I prefer the explanation that the box contained 800 grams of antimatter which then got smuggled out by the Higgs triplet.

I was about to start thinking maybe altitude plays a role in it, but then remembered it's for boiling temperature not weight
technically yes, but realistically I don't think they have a dhl post office in 500km tall spire in germany

8:13 PM
Yeah, mass is the same regardless of altitude. Time isn't, though. Did the box age suspiciously much?

Quite honestly, I'm waiting for the time when we can all return to the usual meta stuff (on the site).

Centrifugal force, perhaps?

didn't even look soaked in water when we weighed it again in the office here lol, same weight as printed on it

@JohnDvorak that would be weight, not mass ;)
but a mass scale would measure weight, so fair enough

maybe those were some weird historical german "imperial" grams idk

8:14 PM
How heavy does a package need to be to gain 800 grams of force when moving from Antarctica to the Equator?

@JohnDvorak how "massive" - the physics teacher would correct :p

I don't think "imperial grams" are a thing.

(shrug emoji)

kibigrams

as opposed to imperial tonnes, which aren't quite 1000kg, and which are why the phrase "metric ton" is a thing.

8:15 PM
@JohnDvorak if you move it from the poles to the equator its weight will decrease

oh TIL

@AndrasDeak ah, true. Sorry.

410
But the energy will increase, higher velocity. Hence the increase of mass which is the same thing.

@user1306322 the UK's postal system is kinda like that. I could address a package to "62 SW1A 9PX" and it'd get there
(not actually sure where "there" is, or if that's even a valid postcode... but that's beside the point :) )

I've had two letters/packages get lost in August, both perfectly addressed

8:17 PM
@ArtOfCode Somewhere in southwest London?
The US tried that with ZIP+4, but it never took off

somewhere in SW1A, yes

@AndrasDeak (I don't think I have enough expertise to make a QoS joke about this)
I wonder if post services work with geographic coordinates
just get a point from any map site

@410 fine then. How much mass does a box need to have for its kinetic mass-energy to increase by 800 grams * c^2 when it moves from a pole to the equator?

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog not southwest, though - SW1A is the fancy bit of London. Try SW1A 1AA

@ArtOfCode I thought so since for London, the first letters represent a compass direction

8:21 PM
eeeehhhhh
for some postcodes they do
for others they very much don't
try the IG postcode area
SW1A is central, not southwest

I for Interdimensional

410
It looks like it at least had that intention en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_postal_district#Map

Aye, that was the original intention, but London is not constrained within those bounds and even within them there's some variation

lol those squggly lines over the bodies of water, what do they also differentiate between stationary boats depending on the coast?

pretty much all of the adjoining postcode areas you see on that map are also at least partially part of London
EN is pretty much all London

> The section relating to postal districts reads "The appropriate postal district shall be indicated in the nameplate in signal red".
(wikipedia, just above the map and list of districts). Where "signal red" is a red link.
Apparently it's #a52019 - an alarming shade indeed.

where "signal red" is the colour in which postcodes are written on street name signs
I'd show you a photo of the one outside the window... but then you'd know where I live, so maybe not

king has multiple butts?

this is what happens when your street names don't have apostrophes in them

410
Google search shows multiple shades of red being used. So much for standardization.

is it King's Butts, or Kings' Butts?

8:30 PM
No, multiple kings have two butts.

idk if more than one butt per royal monarch is under the blasphemy threshold

Thrones are a butt scratcher.

or King's Butt's

Q: Used Keurig smells and tastes like cigarettes

jenI was recently given a used Keurig from a relative. Unfortunately this person was a heavy smoker. I ran vinegar through the machine as well as removed and rinsed the little cup that holds the k-cups, but it still smells and tastes like tobacco. What can I do?

status-by-design

throw it off a balcony

moka pots ftw

9:04 PM
I've heard the best coffee is made from freshly ground beans which are themselves no older than 2 months
some people even roast green beans at home in an oven
but I don't do coffee, only tea
the box I was talking about before contained nearly 12 kilograms of tea
I know it's weird to order tea from germany but it's just assams, darjeelings and a bunch of fruit mixes that don't get ruined as easily as greens
I've got a bunch of japanese greens and chinese reds, along with pu erhs

my wife made me a second-hand coffee snob, we have an electric grinder and everything (no roasting yet)

also, almost none of the preparation methods I've heard other people describe have tasted good to me, so I'm a weird case in that regard
like 2 big teaspoons of loose leaves per cup with only 150ml of freakin 85° water what are you even talking about for 3-5 minutes whatttt
I use about 1 gram per 300ml of 60-70° water for almost all sorts, black or green, and let it steep for 10-15 minutes or until it gets down to drinkable temperature which is around 40-50°C last I checked with a cheap kitchen thermometer
it honestly doesn't get worse if you leave it in, no matter how long and imo that's the correct way
coz I can't be bothered to time it all perfectly, I'm in no condition to do that 90% of the time I want a cup of tea

I'm not a huge tea fan, especially not earl grey, but this smells awesome

and I can't be doing a tea ceremony, I have things to do, so minimize the activity around the preparation
oh I can recommend adding clementine or other sweet citrus juice to any tea
if somehow you get your hands on an actual kumquat or chinotto... oh man add that juice to everything!
chinotto is like the pu erh of citruses

@user1306322 Hah, reminds me of some exercise manuals

9:14 PM
@user1306322 I understood citruses ;)

"Do a spiderman flip, and websling your way between a line of a traffic, gently, for three minutes"
"Then rest your abdominal muscles"
Why thank you that you're concerned about my abdominal muscles.

yea it's like that diet that you can only take if you're otherwise 110% healthy, which nobody is
keto, was it?

I hate that they ruin that word.
Whenever you see keto- in chemistry, it's an astonishing learning opportunity. Everything that has keto- is awesome.
IRL, it's just something to flag as spam.

410
Keto diet is interpreted (at least in restaurant menus) as: eat fat, be happy.
Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

FWIW, tobacco tea makes a good pesticide. Don't let those butts go to waste!

9:18 PM
my friend who works in chemistry has strained their eyes from rolling so much at people misusing "organic" which apparently only means the chemical compound that has carbon and hydrogen (any may contain anything else)

@Shog9 I should try that during my next debugging session

but if you google what "organic" means now, the most popular accepted definition os that it has nothing to do with chemistry but means "good, healthy food"

just wear gloves

@user1306322 in my native language the translation for the new meaning or organic is "bio", which is differently weirdly non-specific
at least it lifts the ambiguity

@user1306322 Well, the thing is, if we could quantify chemistry as an entire science, 70 percent would have been called "organic chemistry" . . .

9:39 PM
any great video games in recent memory?

410
Surely we can. There are 31143 questions in chemistry, of them 7124 in organic chemistry. Hence, 23%
@user1306322 Starcraft was pretty good.
Perhaps my memory of video games is not as recent as yours, though.

that's not that recent but sure, I accept that threshold of recency in these dire times :D

@user1306322 how recent?

any age, honestly
I can list Hollow Knight, Baba is You, Exapunks, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Dark Souls series, Diablo 1 and 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal 2, and yea the starcrafts

(Darksiders)

9:43 PM
I still don't know if "mad" in Mad Scientist's profile means crazy or just angry about relicensing or something.

For one of the more recent ones I played, I'd go with God of War

recently I chkecked out IMDB and it's dumb how few movies from the recent decades get into top 250 each year - either movies started sucking hard after 1990s or the older ones are such unbeatable standards of quality we can barely reach that height
@410 it's Madeline Scientist iirc

410
@user1306322 could be some form of xkcd.com/988

I don't even doubt for a second that it is
same with top PC games on metacritic by "all time" range

@user1306322 Actually, I find movie reviewing to be much more consistent than reviewing everything else
Except maybe novels, but I'm not that into analyzing novels.

yea no text for me these years

What concerns me is actually the opposite. Temporary enjoyment replacing the classics in the top 250.

some prominent writer from italy iirc recommended up and coming newbie writers to look for work in game and movie industry and forget about books
Arturo Perez Reverte

Forget about books, write tweets instead.

since I'm already making a game my writing goes there already lol
nah tweets are 2015
just ignore all social media
listen to some podcasts, find a D&D game on twitch to watch weekly and glance over reddit news post titles, don't even read the linked articles themselves, maybe just 3 top comments explaining what is actually happening contrary to the title
no account needed to vote or comment btw

I use Reddit Enhancement Suite to hide all the sports, cats and "town X in country Z" dedicated subreddits so by now I have around 7000 filtered subreddits and my screen consists of 1-2 posts per 4-5 pages :p
