If I talk about religious opinion, then we (the self or soul) have one advantage:

The fact sometimes people start talking in languages they never learned (usually after head trauma) is a good indication it's not just wild fantasy.

(unless you believe the soul is a discrete entity that gets close to becoming one with the universe but not quittteeee)

Yeah... that's a bit of a weird thing :P personal faith != religion ;)

and for me I'd rather have relgion as a steadying/guiding force than... spend time with my nose in old books.

There is just one commonsense you obviously feel that you (yourself) is different from the body. And that would be one base/pillar of every religions I think.

@JourneymanGeek Sorta, you're thinking of the Satanic Temple, which is an offshoot of LaVeyan Satanism (which itself is part of the Chuch of Satan, and is a sort of nihilistic individualism). Lucifarian Satanism is the truly religious kind.
