@Magisch I got to wear jeans and a shirt to my graduation (MA) too. I managed to break a foot while shopping for shoes to match the dress my mom almost made me wear :D
I think people should be allowed to wear what they want, not what others expect them to wear.
It wasn't a normal graduation. It was this event for the people who wrote the best exam in each of the ~100 different jobs the chamber of commerce manages apprenticeships for. So an event with press there and politicians giving speeches and stuff
@JourneymanGeek Yep. I liked the digs. Maybe I'll start volunteering again, or do as that department head @Magisch mentioned and go on digs during vacations.
@Somewhat Yeah, that does sound a lot cheaper! Over here, the cheapest you can get (and you have to earn below a certain boundary to even be eligible) is around 500 euros
Thankfully furniture, internet, and television are included in the price, but utilities aren't. (Not that that's a huge thing since electricity's cheap in Texas)
@Tinkeringbell That's just my own cost. My apartment has four individual bedrooms.
Also, that's generally high for the city of Austin overall; the area around campus tends to be more expensive because of high demand
Speaking of which, living on the top floor has its benefits and drawbacks. You get a very nice view outside and very good noise isolation, but taking the lift can take a long time if there are a lot of others onboard and it needs to make lots of stops.

Additionally, the fact that the ceiling is bare concrete means that no dust gathers on things, and I have a dust allergy...I needed to take lots of cetirizine pills back in my old on-campus room
@Tinkeringbell Nope. But my rate is 90% inclusive, and I don't believe I'm being overcharged, considering that I don't need to get my own furniture, and I get my own room (whereas in the past I had to share my room with a roommate)
@Tinkeringbell The true reason is, the transportation system here is broken, since people are willing to pay way much more to live within walking distance on campus, or else it would mean having to get a car.
@SonictheInclusiveWerehog You're studying, so you can't earn that wage. Maybe your family can, but if they have to spend such large amounts on rent, there's not much left to save and/or pay the rent for your kids :/
@Magisch Oh... health insurance isn't a tax here, but paid separately. I should take of 200 for that, bringing stuff down to 1.8k a month... the disability insurance and retirement premiums are substracted on my paycheck as well
@Magisch Time to finish that training program and disappear into another job ;) Or would that mean you'd have to carry the costs of the training yourselves?
@Magisch Probably "mild" more than "massive" - many people will write it off as the cost of doing business. Some may be really offended by it, but those people will be really offended by anything.
If you've been working there long (have you?), it's also much more likely to not really be seen negatively, since the cost of the training should be minor in comparison to the contribution you've made up to that point.
(Those people may also be more likely to severely underpay employees, so do take my comment with a grain of salt, but then they may also be really offended by the mere fact that you want to leave at all, ever, so...)
Work for the sprint was finished yesterday, I'm even done with writing the documentation (it's beautiful :P). I'm now helping a manager find someone that knows react native
