@JourneymanGeek As I said, the FAQ is intended specifically for the currently accepted consensus on the topic. Any further discussion should be done separately.

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog Because I don't see them. Little bit busier than I used to be

@Catija Would you mind joining me in Sonic's Den?

2:11 AM
@Somewhat Reporting reason must be in "quotes"

ah, i was wondering why Smokey lost 2 reports...

that said... has a certain dog BARKED LOUDLY this morning...?

@Somewhat NOT YET. CLEARLY I AM NOT AWAKE YET.
SUCH MORNING
MUCH BUSY
WOW

:D

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog but its meta. Meta is... different and posting answers that way is fine.
Actually I had a bout of thankfully alergy related sore eyes this morning
so woke up at 6, popped a claritin, went back to sleep, and got woken up by the roomie
also my brother is going to the US for work, and my aunt on my dad's side is coming from india so...
busy busy

2:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek If I may ask, where to and where from?
@JourneymanGeek They don't have eye drops in Singapore?

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog you may not
@SonictheInclusiveWerehog We do but most of the time, when I have sore eyes, its due to allergies and this works great when it is
Otherwise I have an eye wash that works well, or I go see the doctor about some meds

@JourneymanGeek Not just generic "redness relief" eye drops, but allergy eyedrops. (e.g. "Visine A.C.")

"this works great"
;)
If I need advice I certain will ask

Morning

6:34 AM
Yay. I'm finally at the office, I can get a coffee :D

I wasn't loud enough? :(

Nope. :P You didn't manage to wake me up this night.
It was a perfect night for sleeping too... Dark, silent, and not too hot.

I want a SO hoodie

@Magisch The SU hoodie was kinda... odd

I ordered new sweaters yesterday, or so I thought. Both turned out to be not much more than long-sleeved shirts.

6:36 AM
there was apparently an 'official' SO staff hoodie that looked cool but apparently didn't really last

I think if the SO hoodies are warm and not appallingly thin, I want one too

If they do end up selling the swag for the 10 year anniversary like suggested I'd deck out my entire wardrobe in SO tshirts

@Tinkeringbell the SU one was appalingly thin
good for tropics but not as good as the ones I got at my VFX job (granted those were not free...)

@JourneymanGeek I think Catija mentioned t-shirts yesterday anyways, so I don't think there'll be hoodies :(

@Tinkeringbell T shirts are 'standard' swag

6:38 AM
I could use more SO tshirts

I've got... erm... a few?

In fact, if they'd let me, I'd only wear SO tshirts

(SU x3 +1, SF, AU, SO (grey heather/logo only) and SR.SE I think)
(2 black SU, one white SU and one windows 8 competion one)
oh and a SE one

I have 1 SE shirt. It makes a great pyjama ;)

I wore it to the honors graduation thing by the chamber of commerce
turns out I was underdressed quite severely for that one, but w/e I don't like suits

6:44 AM
ahh lol

@Magisch I got to wear jeans and a shirt to my graduation (MA) too. I managed to break a foot while shopping for shoes to match the dress my mom almost made me wear :D
I think people should be allowed to wear what they want, not what others expect them to wear.

Hah, ya
I actually wanted to skip mine ._.

It wasn't a normal graduation. It was this event for the people who wrote the best exam in each of the ~100 different jobs the chamber of commerce manages apprenticeships for. So an event with press there and politicians giving speeches and stuff
I didn't want to go, but my company made me

@JourneymanGeek That too. But proud parents and stuff..

@Tinkeringbell I dropped out of uni twice before. ;)
It kinda was "oh, its about time"
my brother missed his so apparently...

@JourneymanGeek I already skipped the ceremonies for completing my first year and my bachelor, so... it was kind of inevitable.
The broken foot was nice though, gave me lots of excuses to not go to the afterparty etc. so it was just 1 hour of horror.

shrug Its a piece of paper that's supposed to help me find a job ;)

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, and it didn't even do that for me :P

(cause I can't ever do anything the easy way ;) )
And nothing ever works the first time ;)

@JourneymanGeek On second thought, because I had the degree I was more easily accepted into the programming courses I took.
And there's plenty of stuff that works the first time for me ;)

7:07 AM
@Tinkeringbell maybe. but lots of great programmers... don't have/need a degree.
or have something unrelated.

I don't have a programming degree, that's true

One of the sysadmins I looked up to as a fairly young geek was a english major

Officially, I'm an archaeologist, specialised in museum studies and heritage management

... which is cool...
got the hat and the whip ? ;)

I have a hat. I skipped on the whips, they're not my thing.

7:08 AM
alas.

hats are kinda needed when you're out in the sun all day :D

The hat
;)
(I kid I kid. Indy was a tomb robber ;) )

i.stack.imgur.com/VUiSH.jpg#.png there's me, in the black shirt ;)
That was a fun thing to do, building a house with prehistoric tools :D
That doesn't have the hat though.

I'd love some archaeology right now

I was gonna say...

7:12 AM
I'm drowning in a sea of GDPR

that dude has the second most primitive hammer I have seen

(my dad used our pestle as a hammer for years)

That probably needs a freehand circle, but I'm in the back. You can see me wearing my hard hat over my sun hat :D

lol
not just any freehand circle. A red freehand circle. We have standards ;)

7:15 AM
One of the department heads in my company has archaeology as a hobby
every year he spends 4 weeks in egypt digging up old stuff

I guess that counts as a the hat.

I do miss those days. That project was horrible, but so much fun at the same time :)

as are many things like that ;)

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Blacklisted website in answer, pattern-matching website in answer (170): Installing flash player for Firefox by Neil Bhisma on unix.SE

@JourneymanGeek Yep. I liked the digs. Maybe I'll start volunteering again, or do as that department head @Magisch mentioned and go on digs during vacations.

7:24 AM
"THAT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!"

That goes for half the users on SE :P

@Tinkeringbell there's an archiological digs right next to my old elementary school ;)
That we belong in Museums? ;p

@JourneymanGeek Yep :P

I'm not that old ;)
(maybe in dog years....)

You're in the other half then :P

7:27 AM
But ash is convinced I got adopted after him XD

Awww.

(I was away when he turned up... he also once tried to sneak into the airport to see where's this place humans seem to go to and come back from)

We never had a dog, except for a few weeks when I was really young. When mom's father died, we took his dog until we found a good home for him.
That was a golden retriever, and there's loads of cute pictures of me with that dog. Sleeping in the same basket for example :P

Oh, ash was accidental. Relative of ours got a dog, didn't ask her husband
monumental fight.
We were supposed to take care of him "temporarily"
then I think dad was gonna rehome. That plan survived about 5 minutes ;)

7:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek I think grandpa's dog puked a lot and mom got really tired of cleaning stuff up after a while ;)
She did mention something like that.

@Tinkeringbell ahh
Ash apparently feels that throwing up or pooping improperly is embarassing.
So.. he'll happily wake me up a 3am if he TOTALLY needs to go

@Tinkeringbell If I may ask, where were you building that?

also. We don't talk about such things. It annoys him and he barks lol
@Tinkeringbell its probably easier when its a pup or a dog you've had for years

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog The Netherlands. 'Horsterwold'
It's a nature area near Nijkerk
@JourneymanGeek True. Mom just doesn't have anything with dogs. Certainly not with small ones :P

Ya
I love dogs. Just was never able to convince my parents to let me get one ;)

7:59 AM
I'm about to make myself the villain in my company

Cool. What're you planning? :D

"In the name of GDPR, I command thee..."

Using the sick days or lack of sick days to pay bonuses is illegal under both gdpr and german labor law
my company provides a 50€ a month bonus for employees who haven't been sick for more then 3 days in the past year

almost 1/15th of my montly base salary... (uncomparable though :p)

And I just know once I mention that they'll just rescind the bonus

8:07 AM
ow
I get about thrice that as a bonus for working in the middle of nowhere ;)

no bonus here
Make about 28k a year

Certainly uncomparable, 8300 euro a year :p

I don't know if there'll be a bonus this year yet. I don't think so.
There hasn't been one as long as I'm working here ;)

I make about 2.8k a month sgd before said bonus.

@Somewhat For a year?!?
I'm at 2k € a month. I make that in 4 months :/
I sure hope your costs of living are lower over wherever you are than here..

8:22 AM
Probably quite a lot lower

90€ per month for housing? (well, it's a room rental)

@Tinkeringbell His profile says he's from Indonesia

@Somewhat Yeah, that does sound a lot cheaper! Over here, the cheapest you can get (and you have to earn below a certain boundary to even be eligible) is around 500 euros

To live in an off-campus apartment just west of the University of Texas campus costs me $1,070 USD a month
(920 EUR)

I rented a room for 215 euro's when I was in Uni.
920 is a lot if you're studying and such, but an apartment is of course a lot more than just a room ;)

8:34 AM
Thankfully furniture, internet, and television are included in the price, but utilities aren't. (Not that that's a huge thing since electricity's cheap in Texas)
@Tinkeringbell That's just my own cost. My apartment has four individual bedrooms.
Also, that's generally high for the city of Austin overall; the area around campus tends to be more expensive because of high demand

What would you need a four bedroom apartment for if you're just studying?
Are you having a family already?

Speaking of which, living on the top floor has its benefits and drawbacks. You get a very nice view outside and very good noise isolation, but taking the lift can take a long time if there are a lot of others onboard and it needs to make lots of stops.
@Tinkeringbell Shared with three others. My building leases to people individually.

Oh... then you were way overcharged I guess
Or America is broken.
(again)

@Tinkeringbell No, this is normal for this area, due to its high demand.
Plus this is a new building.

America is broken :p

8:39 AM
Even then... how much square meters of room did you have? aren't there rules for max prices per square meter?
There's quite a lot of legislation and organisations here that do their best to protect students from being overcharged.

Additionally, the fact that the ceiling is bare concrete means that no dust gathers on things, and I have a dust allergy...I needed to take lots of cetirizine pills back in my old on-campus room
@Tinkeringbell Nope. But my rate is 90% inclusive, and I don't believe I'm being overcharged, considering that I don't need to get my own furniture, and I get my own room (whereas in the past I had to share my room with a roommate)
This is a normal price for this area.

I dunno. It sounds like a massive amount to just live, while you're studying and not working full-time. Where would a student get the money to pay it?

@Tinkeringbell The true reason is, the transportation system here is broken, since people are willing to pay way much more to live within walking distance on campus, or else it would mean having to get a car.

I pay 345€ a month for rent atm

@Tinkeringbell Many are being subsidized by full-ride scholarships, others have families that make (or save) a lot of money

8:43 AM
@Tinkeringbell before or after tax?
Mine is before tax

@Magisch After...

But our salaries here are high anyway, with a median of $55,000 USD per year
(before tax)

I'm at 2.8-ish before tax.

mine is 1.5 ish after tax

@Magisch That's... a horrible amount of tax.

8:44 AM
2.4 ish before 1.5 ish after
tax, health insurance, disability insurance, mandatory retirement insurance
cuts about 40% in total

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog You're studying, so you can't earn that wage. Maybe your family can, but if they have to spend such large amounts on rent, there's not much left to save and/or pay the rent for your kids :/

Ugh, bad (automated?) edit...

@Magisch Oh... health insurance isn't a tax here, but paid separately. I should take of 200 for that, bringing stuff down to 1.8k a month... the disability insurance and retirement premiums are substracted on my paycheck as well

I'm underpaid by about 30% compared to peers in just software dev atm
And from the people on the DPO certificate training program, I make the least by 35k to the next lowest

@Tinkeringbell My family makes some bit more than that amount

8:49 AM
@Magisch Time to finish that training program and disappear into another job ;) Or would that mean you'd have to carry the costs of the training yourselves?

do not have such a clause
but that would generate massive bad blood

Well, either they up your pay or it's themselves they can blame ;)
I'm all for being 'loyal to an employer' but that does mean the employer has a certain duty towards me as well
And in the case of massively underpaying someone it's the employer that started it ;)

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Pattern-matching website in answer (79): Laptop installing a printer without UAC elevation by Falcon Marley on serverfault.com

9:22 AM
@Magisch Probably "mild" more than "massive" - many people will write it off as the cost of doing business. Some may be really offended by it, but those people will be really offended by anything.
If you've been working there long (have you?), it's also much more likely to not really be seen negatively, since the cost of the training should be minor in comparison to the contribution you've made up to that point.

9:35 AM
(Those people may also be more likely to severely underpay employees, so do take my comment with a grain of salt, but then they may also be really offended by the mere fact that you want to leave at all, ever, so...)

Ugh
I sprained my ankle

@JourneymanGeek :( How did you manage that? :P

@Tinkeringbell Ash decided to take a leap off a little slope... I missteped and...
ow ow ow
THEN I had to carry him home cause he's a merciless little. ..

Heh :P Maybe ash sprained a limb too!

naw, he was walking fine

I want to know how the DPO at stack exchange did all this
even for a small company, it seems like way too much for 1 person to do

@Magisch I don't think there would be one person
and SO corp's not that small?
And I'm SWAGing the hell out of this, but I wouldn't be surprised if they got help - especially out of the german office.

@Magisch 3 people were hired to fill the role formerly filled by Jeff Atwood back in the day.

@JourneymanGeek I'm knee deep in a first analysis of data processing activities and now already tired of this crap

12:41 PM
@SonictheInclusiveWerehog Its worth remembering though Atwood was basically the CM in Chief, Lead dev, and general... well he wore many hats
and SE's kinda ... a lot bigger

pretty sure jeff was also a workaholic

@Magisch well maybe
apparently he's also in singapore 0_0
@Magisch in a sense though, early SE was 'his' baby

you should go find him with ash
"Ahh so this is the famed super user dog"

lol
I'm not actually sure if he'd know us ;)

He pretty much had a vision for running the sites; since he left, the sites' operation has diverged from his vision to a degree.

12:43 PM
maybe not but I wanted to work ash into the conversation

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog on the other hands, some stuff dosen't quite scale well

Do you have to do that here? :) Maybe it's less disrupting if you do it in your den ;)
Or a Sandbox room

a denizen of the den

I deny your denizen

@Tinkeringbell I did that intentionally to see if you'd awaken...just kidding :) I'll do it in Sonic's Den next time.

@JourneymanGeek SKREEEE!
I have no clue, what kind of sounds do parrots make in English?

they squawk

12:50 PM
so SQUAWK? :P

I imagine a parrot trying to make bell sounds

They can also honk or hoot if they're being weird or malfunctioning (like Alex the honking cockatiel) or screech if they're angry or frightened

@Tinkeringbell You mean you're not a parrot in real life?

parrots can also talk

12:52 PM
@Dukeling Not a bilingual one at least :P

@Magisch I can do 'Lorre wil een koekje'... I again don't know the English equivalent ;)

I'm kind of curious how the cactus types though.

it seems so...

@Somewhat That one is kinda chubby. Are you calling me fat?!

D: ran away
