Any real effort on stopping the Anonymous Teacher troll??
They delete their account within 30 seconds of first post (plagiarized, of course)
While we can be helpful towards content cleanup, I don't think there's much we can do to really stop them.
I recall gparyani has already raised a question on MSE and haven't got some good response
So, 5 mins has passed and this is the instance I'm talking about.

6:08 AM
@ɪʙᴜɢ Tim Post did comment saying that it would be one thing that would be looked into once all the responsive designs have rolled out.
Of course, if you really believe that it has high priority, you can follow the steps at How do I get attention for old, unfixed bug reports and feature requests without official responses here on Meta?.
For context, here's the question ɪʙᴜɢ is referring to:

Q: Prevent users from immediately deleting their accounts if they've made one post

Sonic the Inclusive HedgehogI'm posting this following the discussion at Should we disallow users from immediately deleting their accounts if they've made one post?, which seems to be positive and generally in favor of doing this. I got reminded of this issue again because the same thing I mentioned in the other post happen...

Dear SE overlords. While "site redesigns" suck 90% of the time, I'm now convinced that this particular site redisign you did is actually a quite good one.

It did score a net positive at phy.mse, yes

In particular, "responsive design" is an infamous buzzword, and it's also a very badly chosen word, its meaning is actually good, and you have actually implemented it correctly rather than abused its capabilities, which is a very rare thing to see.
I still don't much like the left sidebar (because I use a large font and don't like the horizontal screen estate taken up, and don't like the alternative dropdown menu either), but it's not that bad of a thing for most users.
The one thing people really dislike is the lack of site-customized vote icons (and backgrounds apparently). I hate backgrounds, and I already wrote a solution for the customized vote icons for Sci Fi SE.
I'll try to do a bit more in my power to convince people that this is a good update, but I'll have to do it sneakily. I can't just go around thanking you and saying that I like this update, that won't help at this point.
What I can do is advertise the vote buttons customization, and perhaps try to design a few sets of entirely new vote buttons (purely symbolic, nothing very site-specific) and advertise them in general for sites that lost a custom vote button or have a custom theme.

8:17 AM
I tried to add a popular description of why I like the new site design into scifi.meta.stackexchange.com/a/12102/4918 . Feel free to quote me on it.

@b_jonas You called it 'responsible' design... isn't it 'responsive'?
At least you've done it consistently, now making me doubt!

@Tinkeringbell I don't know. I don't use web designer buzzwords, so I've no idea really.
If you find out which term is appropriate, feel free to edit my post or tell me.

@b_jonas You.. called it responsive in your messages above, that's why I thought one of the other might be wrong ;)
I'm not that familiar with web design either, so I'll leave it from when someone else passes by

Apparently it's "responsive design"

yes, it is
It responds to the size of the "screen" you view the site on and tries to offer the best UX for the given "screen size", hence responsive

8:29 AM
@rene Right. I still think it's a stupid buzzword, but sure.

Yes.

Since the explanation in that post is licensed by the usual CC-BY-SA license, please feel free to quote or rework it to convince more people.

A: Exactly which features of SFF.SE's magnificent theme will we be losing?

b_jonasYou will lose the custom graphics and custom size of the upvote, downvote, favorite question and accept buttons next to posts. The custom graphics is specific to Sci Fi SE, and there's a recolored version specific to Sci Fi Meta. I have a customization that you can enable to get the traditional...

See bottom part.
This stuff is important to me, because 90% of website designs suck, so I generally hate them too, but for once, the SE team is rolling out a good web design change. This is an opportunity I feel I should advertise and celebrate as much as I can.
I wonder if I should copy that explanation to its own top-level Meta post to make it easier to link.
But I'm not sure how to do it without backfiring. I don't want to make it look like a stupid advertisment or suck-up.
Heck, I will do so. Even if I get downvoted to hell for it (it's on a meta, mind you) and thought of as a suck-up, it's worth the chance to advertise the changes themself. This is so important to me.

9:05 AM
I'm working on editing the writeup and copying it to a standalone top level post on Sci Fi Meta.

Q: Does the new unified design theme result in more off-topic questions where lost users asked on the wrong site?

Sonic the Inclusive HedgehogThis is partially a request for opinion, and partially a request for statistics. For a very long time, Meta Stack Exchange has suffered from a problem where a lot of users ask blatantly off-topic questions here, such as programming questions. One of the reasons for posting off-topic questions he...

b_jonasI'd like to show you a rare* example of good website redesign. It's right here on Sci Fi Stack Exchange (and Meta too, whichever you choose). @JourneymanGeek :D :D
I <3 that subtle lisping.

Japan has "ohakonbanchiwa", a portmanteau of "ohayou" (good morning), "konbanwa" (good evening) and "konnichiwa" (good afternon) ._.

@πάνταῥεῖ I kinda slept most of the day and took me 2 attempts to get that right ;)

11:53 AM
@Catja A tech question: Who is Anon3♦? Is that a mod bot?

@πάνταῥεῖ 0_0
whawhere?

Oh yeah, site icons are borked again :)

@Somewhat sure its not the user script?

Granted this is from Chat Topbar user script, but I don't think it's modifying site icons too...
since it's also repro on Chat top site

@JourneymanGeek Well I received a kind reminder from an SO mod recently, coming up with these two pics: 1 2 and I was just wondering.
I have marked the doubtful flags my own there.

12:00 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ I'd guess its a userscript or a photo edit so that people won't know who did it
notice all the names are anonymised
cause who flagged something is "secret"

Oh, err.... okay... well, I know a mod who always does that ._.

I noticed that of course, but why anonymizing to Anon3♦ in particular, instead of just blackening or such?

to still give transparency on the actions when there are more than 1 mods...

You'd have to ask the mod ;)
I can tell you its not a standard view

@JourneymanGeek My only choice to ask is responding to all of them. The particular Mod who sent that isn't disclosed at such reminders.

12:06 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ or just know "Its probably a userscript or a photo edit"
which I can tell you ;)

Tho I find it quite weird what people tend to flag unwelcoming or even rude these days.
There were some of these comments, but those I marked???

Well, IDK

I am feeling chased a bit, ya know :P

I can't really tell what people are thinking or how a mod chooses to deal with a thing ;)
Even on SU, sometimes folks disagree with how I do things and vice versa and this is fine

Are you the dog who didn't leave a burning house?

12:10 PM
Nope

That's the dog who dosen't listen to his nose, and the folks around him

@JourneymanGeek I have a strong feeling that was the result of personal differences with a particular mod, but I can't tell at all. Shrug, let's move on ...

That's a good idea
And learn from it

12:12 PM
Sure!

12:25 PM
Would you mind to stop using this particular tag please.

@πάνταῥεῖ Why?
The users have all explicitly consented to being pinged for this reason.

Because no one else uses it but you.
Tags should be put for common reasons.

No one else pings other users to hammer questions?
I guess I'm the first one.

Seems so ...

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Most people don't try to shortcut that
vote to close is fine
But maybe you can earn the gold badge first if you really want to closehammer things

12:33 PM
If I'm shown statistics indicating that a large proportion of the questions I make such requests for weren't closed, I'd probably stop.
But right now, as far as I can tell, most questions I make such requests for, the request is either granted or the question is subsequently closed by the community.
(the latter being a sign that not everyone on the list for such requests is available in the room all the time)

I've got the queen bot supporting me at SO, well.

*If I'm shown statistics* ... not every request has to be backed up with statistics! People are simply asking you to use something more common, like close-vote-please instead of referring to it as something obscure as a chaos emerald (No, I'm not interested in knowing why or what it is).

If people with gold badges don't mind being pinged when there's a question they can bindingly close, fine, but like Geek said, it does come across as trying to shortcut yet another thing.j

Ah, sorry, I thought they were talking about the fact that I was making such requests and pings, not the tag name.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog well a little of both

Well, they were to an extent too, and if the room owners don't want such things in the room you should listen to them, not demand statistics.

12:40 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog protip. People don't owe you their time

@Tinkeringbell rene also happens to be an RO, and he's one who explicitly consented to such pings.

This is a fundamental thing you need to grok
So, something like would make @πάνταῥεῖ happier
You actually getting that darned gold badge (yes! Its actual work!) so you can dupe-hammer things yourself should be your real goal if it bothers you

@Tinkeringbell The reason why I continue to use that name is for historical reasons. It wouldn't make much sense to change it now because of all the past uses. The users on the request list all understand this name, and changing it would mean a user searching for past requests would have to search for both names. As a compromise, I agreed that I wouldn't use Sonic references in normal speech, referring to hammers and gold badges by their generic names.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog but but
people have been asking for ages

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I quote myself: (No, I'm not interested in knowing why or what it is).

12:43 PM
I believe users don't care about the past usage of [chaos-emerald-plz]

I put that there for a reason.

And another fundamental issue is how hard it is for feedback to you to have an effect.

@Tinkeringbell I thought you meant, "I don't care that a Chaos Emerald is an item in the Sonic games that...".
I was just explaining why I had chosen not to change the name.

(and ignoring a bunch of regulars in the process ._.)

@JourneymanGeek He's all yours ;)

12:45 PM
I said earlier that I make decisions based on all items that are given to me. Simply adding cons to my list of pros and cons may make me still decide that the pros outweigh the cons. A better strategy is to remove pros from my list.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog erm no

sure, we have delvote-plz, nuke-plz, burn-it-with-fire-plz, but that's self-describing... unlike chaos-emerald-plz (and it has made a confusion to new visitors on this room)

You make decisions on what you want to do
and never ever really listen to the feedback unless there's a ... serious bit of concequence, and sometimes even not then.

So, if we tell you to change it to [dupe-hammer-plz], will you change it?

I would think that's the start of an acceptable compromise ;)

12:48 PM
@JourneymanGeek (fortunately, I'm going to have dinner soon, he's all yours ;)

I've had dinner and a lot of sleep ;)
@Somewhat the fact that if you know how to use the site, most of those those are self evident is nice

Well, sonic already admitted they're a spectrum person, that might come into the way with reflecting against others, but more living in your self contained world.

(though, I do find it makes getting the steward badges a pain when we're cleaning house so efficiently ourself ;) )

I'd be losing part of my identity.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog shrug Its an identify you create ;)

12:51 PM
"What is in the name" -- meatball elephant Somewhat Memorable Name Somewhat

@Somewhat I'd argue you have a theme
or had one at least ;)

Speed, nothing else. I'd prefer consciousness over speed.

"users not understanding what it means" isn't really a con, because if they don't understand, they can ping me, and I'll gladly explain to them. Users have done this and I've never hesitated to tell them.
But if the users on the ping list say that they prefer that I change the name, I might do it.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog ... see....
You're not listening to anything you don't want to
this is a problem
Actually, this is the problem

Okay, I give up ¯_(ツ)_/¯ dinner nom nom nom

12:53 PM
Even when I went explicitly...
6 mins ago, by Journeyman Geek
and never ever really listen to the feedback unless there's a ... serious bit of concequence, and sometimes even not then.

@Somewhat Enjoy! Let us know what you ate ;)

I have no idea how I can be any clearer than that.

@Somewhat May I ask what's up for dinner?

@Tinkeringbell I had fat indian savory pancakes (adai) and a aviyal stew ;)

@JourneymanGeek not "uttapam"?

12:54 PM
Different batter.
Uttapam's just a fat dosai

@JourneymanGeek Sounds good :) I still have to get groceries for tonight.
Maybe we'll eat pancakes too

Austin's Kerbey Lane Café sells an awesome buttermilk pancake mix

I had indian food yesterday, and a bad hangover this morning because of too much whiskey. When I woke up, I've been asking myself, did I have dinner yesterday at all??

I bought some a few months ago, took it to San Diego, showed it to my sister, and she finished it off

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I'll just hop on a plane and get some.

12:56 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ ah, I almost want to make a joke about maya

@Tinkeringbell You're forgetting about the existence of... the internet

but apparently I'm not awake enough for bad tamil puns ;)

@Tinkeringbell Speaking of travel, have you by any chance come across Travel mod Willeke? It seems she's also from the Netherlands and a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers.

@πάνταῥεῖ Drink less next time ;)
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I already ignored that once, why keep nagging me about it?

@Tinkeringbell I...don't remember asking you about that? I remember only asking Willeke.

12:59 PM
@Tinkeringbell Sure, that was my conclusion when I saw all the empty deli boxes :P

Did I and I forgot?

I really have no wish to share anything about that with you, so stop asking.
Sorry. You asked in TAS, in the same series of incessant pings and prying behaviour

Huh, I remember now. Forgot about it. Sorry for asking again. And thanks for letting me know immediately of my mistake.

@Sonic The only real advice I can give regarding your deficiencies(and I have some insight about your problems): Learn what these are, and get the points when you are stepping over the border with others. Learn to remind yourself. Slow down, be patient. Being broadly accepted within a society absolutely requires that. I myself have serious problems with society acceptance levels, but brought it at least to a stage where they respect me.

My opinion is that if, despite my telling them that they should tell me if I annoy them, they don't tell me and I continue with that behavior, it's their fault for bringing it on them, since they didn't tell me.

1:09 PM
But they keep telling you...

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog We keep telling you. You're not listening. I've told you you're not listening three times this conversation.
That makes 4 possibly?

I'll go with three

Let me clarify something. The person themselves needs to tell me they're annoyed. If someone else tells me, it's quite possible that they're only saying so because they'd be annoyed if I showed the same behavior towards them. It's also quite possible that the person involved isn't actually annoyed. I shouldn't have to repeat the same story of the mentor and the director.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog .... dude. That is not how it works
AND people have told you how it works.
"Hey, people might not always be ready to tell you there's a problem"
Sometimes folks like me end up stepping up cause we can clearly see there's a problem. But without you being willing to actually listen, our options are limited.
@JohnDvorak that makes 4 ;)

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog The usual behavior is that persons don't tell you they're actually annoyed, but make some nice statement covering that with choclit and rose blossom leaves.

1:15 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ I've been blunt I've kicked...

I've done everything short of sending a highly paid operative to paint it on his ceiling, and tattoo it inside his eyelids....

The downside is that the third kick is 30 minutes and alerts all mods

@πάνταῥεῖ That is difficult to understand at best, and at worst completely unhelpful.

(Us ROs have almost no budget)
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Deal with it

1:17 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog only for ones like you.

Cause everyone else is having to deal with your inability to take a ... well extremely obvious and clear suggestion not to do something ...

Sometimes I don't get hints, but I try...
... and you can always ask to have the hints explained

@JohnDvorak ... I'm past hinting.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Simple suggestion - if it comes from an RO or a CM - you should take it like it came from whatever person you think should respond
AGAIN WITH THIS.

Hints, and even worse, drama already appeared. Go for self reflection plz.

Quite simply, just take anything I say, RO hattedly, as law kthx.
Also, I've explicitly and clearly just told you that " if it comes from an RO or a CM - you should take it like it came from whatever person you think should respond"
Which comes back down to your unwillingness to listen

1:22 PM
Deaf people :-(

which leads to an inability to change behaviours that is quickly alienating quite a large chunk of the room.
Which is something I might have brought up before.

Your patience is amazing @journey

@πάνταῥεῖ Pray you do not see the day it runs out ;)
Cause me angry is terrifying. Primarily to me ;)

If all the held back stuff will explode at once you mean? ;)

@πάνταῥεῖ oh see, someone exploding is....
short lived.
Its a quick yell, lots of screaming, and OH GOD THE BLOOD....

1:25 PM
That makes much sense yes.

it washes off ;)
I tend to be a bit more slow burn mostly.

It usually takes me a lot of time to regain shape after I explode

At this point, if I explain my thought process of why I decided to stick with the current name, would that incite anger?

But right now, my concern is more trying to get this room in a better place over punishment or a proper application of fear.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog the utter unwillingness to adjust is .... not a good sign.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog "No one likes it"

1:27 PM
If you keep it up, eventually "No one will like you"

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog stop

This is something we are trying extremely hard to prevent but I feel like at some point, its not my failure, its yours.

@Sonic I don't get why you're insisting to keep this nick here beyond @gparyani at the SO main site for a 1st step.
You can give yourself a face everywhere. But acting as a unique real life character is beyond stage :3
Says an experienced hobbyist actor ...

@πάνταῥεῖ Nice. What have you played so far?

1:37 PM
Its ok, I saw

@Tinkeringbell Loads of roles, from Shakespeare to Tankred Dorst or even boulevard theatre.

Anyone spot the irony in the first revision of this post?

I play a human on the internet. or a human pretending to be a dog, or dog pretending to be a human ;)

@πάνταῥεῖ Sounds nice. I never gotten further than background actor #12 :P
I'm a parrot. I should start just copy-pasting stuff :P

It gives me a good reflection for how I should behave in a society at all. I love acting at stage, and sometimes have to laugh how people associate my very person when I was playing a role.
Acting at stage is an art of its own, and it's not for nothing that we call actors to be artists at all.

1:42 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ Oh, being on a stage definitely gave me more voice control and a sense of confidence... I'm just really bad at e.g. pretending to be drunk :P
or sad, or happy, or whatever.

@Tinkeringbell I've got no problems when getting drunk, most of the times I intend to do so ;-)

@πάνταῥεῖ True. It is really hard to act like you're sad if you're actually on an adrenalin rush ;)
@πάνταῥεῖ Hah, same here. Hence the italics for pretending ;)

lol
Its called method acting ;)

@JourneymanGeek Here comes the 'I don't drink'? :P
Oh... is that what it's called!

"two drinks, and I'm in character" :)
@Tinkeringbell too obvious, and not as funny.

1:46 PM
@Tinkeringbell Pro tip: Marihuana (even the CBD stuff) helps a lot to get overshooting adrenaline under control :3

@πάνταῥεῖ ._.

@πάνταῥεῖ Ehhh.. Dutchies are pretty okay with that, but not for minors ;)

So does a quick bit of meditation ;)

I was still a minor when I tried acting :)

(I still deal with a certain degree of anxiety, though thankfully its not as bad as it used to be)

1:48 PM
@JourneymanGeek See, that bit is where the cannabis comes in ;)

@Tinkeringbell two things.
Super illegal here
and I hung out with a friend who smoked stuff when I hit rock bottom
Second hand. but I don't don't care for mellow.

@Tinkeringbell I am really angry about the politics here, spending millions of Euros to chase Cannabis Users, which could be better spent in addiction prevention and gaining from regularly taken taxes. I myself are well knowing what I am doing, minors don't and have to be taught about the risks and drawbacks.

I just dropped the caffeine, and tried to find peace with myself ;)
Or to put it another way, I decided the best way to deal with the little voices that tell you you arn't good enough, is to kick em where it hurts ;)

@JourneymanGeek Actually, cannabis and rock bottom don't go together ;) If it's illegal, it's not that great risking trouble for it either.

naw, was visiting a friend who happened to smoke it, in a country that was a lot more fiendly
ended up hanging out with his doggos, who are much better at helping with anxiety
I miss em, they both past away due to old age.

1:52 PM
I am pretty much consuming the legal CBD stuff recently, but still love that THC effect, when all the adrenaline is gone to be told: Shut Up!

Some U.S. states have passed laws legalizing it, but the official position of the federal government is that it's illegal

@πάνταῥεῖ I think smoking cannabis is legal here, selling it is legal, but here comes the fun: Growing it is still illegal 0-o

@Tinkeringbell Is importation illegal?

At least people here aren't squeamish about telling the paramedic what they took when there's trouble...

@Tinkeringbell which is handy
singapore's kinda in the extreme zero tolerance camp. I kinda personally feel that somewhere in between would better.
I'm against the mandatory death penalty for drug mules - cause I feel in many cases they're as much victims as anything.
(so here, I think most likely your friends would abandon you and you'd die in an alley all alone 0_0)

1:54 PM
mules as in the people that traffic and sell drugs?

bring in
I mean, if you're sitting in an apartment with a few bricks of i donno what...
its different

Figured it's time for a new identity anyway.

but the people who smuggle it in - well not all of them deserve to swing.

Ahah. Yeah, I've seen the episodes on discovery channel and how people are either desperate or sometimes even tricked...

(well, on the whole also the "morality" of the death penalty)
I think mandatory death penalties for crimes is... not a good idea

1:56 PM
@Tinker I went to my preferred bio shop in Austria today buying some plantz. I've been telling the shop owner, I took all of your big scions, that will work out quicker. He said, OK I have some other ones I'll give you for free, these gone weird and to big for selling. I am quite satisfied today :-D

@JourneymanGeek Mandatory penalties for any crime are frowned upon nowadays. While in medieval europe there practically was a list of this-that :P

China's getting there already. If they catch you being rude, then cashiers and cinemas get a red rectangle around your face and you get to pay extra.

@πάνταῥεῖ I understood about half of death.
@Tinkeringbell well europe's anti death penalty

Have you ever heard of 'Discipline and Punish' by Foucault? Great book on that ;)

They'll just need some care and fertilizers. Bigger pots at all.

1:57 PM
@JourneymanGeek Europe is going to be pro stuffed toys if we're not careful...

"Foucault" and "Discipline" in one sentence brings images of a swinging saw to my mind

@Tinkeringbell nothing really wrong with that IMO

@JourneymanGeek Hmmm. There's a balance to be struck, and if people that can't be fixed aren't detained by the rules enough to not do any more harm to society...

I've always felt that as long as you remember there's times society needs to be protected from some individuals, taking the moral and compassionate high road isn't a bad thing.

We've had such a case recently, where someone being psychiatrically treated had enough freedom to kill a young woman
