@Shog9 Out of curiosity, which title do you like better on that FAQ? The old "List of all badges with full descriptions", or the current one?
Thanks for fixing the FAQ.

If I start a new room with someone from their chat profile, will they get a notification in their inbox?
Also, is there a way to ping them prior to them entering room? Or is that not an option? What if they were made into a room owner?

@TravisJ afaik, the user will get a "chat invitation" notification
@TravisJ I don't think so. there's a specific requirement for a user to be pingable on chat, unless it's superping by mods

That's what my assumption was too, but I wasn't sure if it was changed at some point.

Q: Prevent users from immediately deleting their accounts if they've made one post

Sonic the Inclusive HedgehogI'm posting this following the discussion at Should we disallow users from immediately deleting their accounts if they've made one post?, which seems to be positive and generally in favor of doing this. I got reminded of this issue again because the same thing I mentioned in the other post happen...

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog because people disagree with the feature being requested there.

Really... why no one asks why their posts get upvoted instead...

6:59 AM
@ShadowWizard Obviously I know that. I was asking, what could be potential reasons for disagreeing with it?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog oh that I can't know...

@Somewhat Oh maaaaaan
I have days when I wonder if I get upvotes cause I'm brilliant, or I'm someone slightly internet famous, or I have an adorable dog avatar.

@JourneymanGeek Definitely the dog.

That's acceptable ;p

@JourneymanGeek you do get an upvote from me on SoftRec.SE election for having adorable dog :)
in other words: good luck for the e'lection!

Thanks ;p

Now I have to gain a bunch of rep there to vote for you

What's the correct close reason for "is this code correct?", or are such questions on topic?
The MCVE reason seems the closest, but not quite right.

Got an example? Could be "unclear what you're asking" at a stretch ... as in "why are you asking us? Does it do what it should do? Doesn't it? If not, what does it do? etc."

Q: Is this Knapsack-like algorithm correct?

user1798707I've implemented a simple algorithm for a Knapsack-like problem. I've searched other solutions in similar questions, but I cannot determine if my solution is complete for this specific problem. The problem: Write a function that takes a number a list of numbers. The function should retur...

Myeah, not entirely sure it should be closed. Or at least I can't come up with a convincing motivation. The question could be better, but still.

I feel like such questions just have fundamentally no future value. If they were to just ask how to do something, it would be useful to a whole bunch of people, and potentially many questions can be closed as duplicates, but this is too specific to the work OP has already done to really be useful to others. Although just asking how to do it becomes a "show your research" problem (enough research would often lead to figuring it out). Not really sure what algorithm questions should even look like.

12:12 PM
@Dukeling Maybe it's better for code-review (like the first comment suggests?) than SO?

@Tinkeringbell I doubt it. As far as I know, Code Review expects working code. This is specifically asking whether the code works, which very well might violate that. And it also isn't about reviewing every aspect of it (which would be more what Code Review wants), just about figuring out whether it works.

Code Review is for reviewing working code. I don't know if their scope include "fixing" code because there's an explicit close-reason for non-working code

@Somewhat Ah... so this code doesn't work?
:(
I kinda assumed that it did at least do something like was expected, or why else ask if you did it correctly or missed something ;)

I think what the OP is asking (or perhaps should be asking), is "My implementation works on the test set, but how can I confirm it fully solves the general problem" ... or something along those lines.

We don't really know if the code works for all cases. There are always edge cases/extreme cases that the OP may haven't found/tested

12:16 PM
True... I guess I read it the way Bart did, assuming that their code did 'work' but now they're asking if they missed something :)
If you post on code-review, is it expected you figured out your edge cases and tested them first?

@Tinkeringbell I think questions asking for regular reviews of code missing some edge cases could possibly be fine on Code Review, but not questions where you ask whether you missed some edge cases.

Ah. That makes sense.

I think Code Review also expects proper test cases to test if the code works or not, so if the code is working..... then there's nothing wrong with the code. It's more of[...] ninja'd
To put it simply, the questions seems asking for test cases that will fail the implementation...
Which... I don't know how copes with that...

Yeah.. I see it now, it's asking whether it's complete...

@Somewhat I don't think there are that many such questions for people to really have reached consensus on how to deal with it. Also, there probably aren't that many users active in the algorithm tag, since that's sometimes used very broadly (as in: this question involves a program) and often requires knowledge of a specific language to answer.

A: Finding the right complexity classes for functions

gsamarasAll your answers are correct, well done.

Also, I just realized how FUBAR the UI on that search... double tag infobox?
I believe I'm not the first one to find this bug...

Oh, that? Definitely too broad (9 questions is 8 too many). Also too localized. Possibly a duplicate of some canonical post about big-O.
If we're being particularly critical, we could possibly even close it for text-as-images.
Most of those appear to be about time complexity, which I'm inclined to say should all be duplicates. stackoverflow.com/questions/487258/… stackoverflow.com/questions/11032015/… stackoverflow.com/questions/3255/…
Although I still need to get around to writing that ULTIMATE "how to calculate time complexity" answer, which would make closing as duplicate a more justifiable action in most cases.

1 hour later…
1:50 PM
@Somewhat yeah, MSE and MSO has plenty reports of that bug. I definitely duped a few

2:33 PM
@Dukeling always start your reasoning by answering the question, "what problem does this cause?"
Close reason, flag, etc follows

huh. OP has different gravatar on MSE and Math.SE...

This is a confusing bug report on MSO: meta.stackoverflow.com/q/373027/578411 I expected a Javascript error or a z-index problem but I can't repro in firefox or it must be that their error is handled in a different code path. I don't expect them to be Q-banned

Shog's 9 Rules of Pinging

Shog's already been through this a few times. He's been clear - specifically to Sonic - that if he minds the pings, he'll just ignore them. ... and he gave a long list of "rules" for pinging... At this point, I've decided that it's better to just ignore it and let Shog manage it himself. He's certainly been dealing with it for long enough at this point.

@Dukeling Yes. So much this. That is a major problem with the design of closure right now.
It is entirely possible to ask if an approach is just one tweak away, often getting an entire set of refactor answers. However, asking how to just properly approach the problem is absolutely hammered.
Or, just as often, it languishes as no one is "supposed to" answer it, not wanting to get into a meta argument in the comments of their answer. Eventually, sometimes, OP will return with whatever solution they ended up using, but it isn't really a collaboration, or even a community consensus. And yet, this will remain in the search results of google for others going forward. Less answers, less desirable solutions, for those which do remain.

10:20 PM
... why would github know which passwords I use in different services?

lol that is absurd
Someone is hosting a service that stores passwords. Did no one stop for a second and think, "maybe this is a bad idea"?
There is a false assumption that the bcrypt would hold on a such a set. "517 million record dataset", essentially this would be the set to use in a brute force attack, reducing the efficiency of all passwords to just roughly worse than 6 numeric digits.

AFAIK the rationale is that these were all databases that were already available - so chances are, someone looking to brute-force passwords could already have it.

10:38 PM
Hm. I see, that is unfortunate. I guess I never really looked much into how bad the situation of people exposing passwords was. Luckily I rarely use anything good on services I don't care for, but still, the rampant disregard is astonishing.
"1.4 Billion Clear Text Credentials Discovered in a Single Database" medium.com/4iqdelvedeep/…
Ridiculous
I guess the only thing holding back hackers is their inability to brute force passwords nowadays.
