10:03 PM
Usually comment threads getting too long can either be nuked entirely or moved to chat.

Strictly? Anything that doesn't seem intending to improve the post.... is eligible to be deleted.

Mods of course can delete comments that aren't flagged.

On this meta you can find all the stuff that I could find about when and how to classify a comment meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/333397/…
There are a few meta and especially the FAQ

Just reading currently...

@MartinJames I will just bring my friend VIM and we will clean up that place also ;)
@ThorstenS. do note that the community has a bit of a different view then SE

10:12 PM
I specifically asked for meta. I know the rules are different for other sites.
meta.stackexchange.com, to be precise

@ThorstenS. I guess they delete when comment is doing harm, why do you ask?

...why did you have to do this, @TimP, why? Couldn't you keep your pain internal?
This image is evil. Someone posted it in a chatroom at work today and I'm never going to be the same.

@PetterFriberg That deals mostly with comments of being rude. What interests me more is the daily work of a moderator. Let's say I have a bunch of many comments under an answer/question. How do deal moderators with it. Throwing all away, delete some specific comments...giving up >:) ? Are there guidelines?

Well, there's a FAQ about comments on Meta SE... but that's only guidelines, because the practical rules will be different on each SE sites.

@Somewhat Everything under a hood...no wonder I did not find it.

10:20 PM
@ThorstenS. moving to chat.. I guess they judge content, if harm delete, if many delete "Thanks", "Me too", if long discussion move to chat

@Mithrandir luckily for me, I didn't get it.
(looks like the arrow is just misplaced?)

I don't think they have an exact guideline, instead it is use your tools with common sense

@PetterFriberg Thought so.
The arrows on the image point from one edge to the middle point.

@Mithrandir closed, now needing two more delete votes.

Mods have their own chat, so in doubt they can ask others

10:23 PM
So while parallel, they don't point to the right position.

...and a Channel :)

Ooh yeah that to

@Mithrandir and a hat!
I wonder, did Jon Skeet get a hat swag? Maybe with "1M" instead of diamond? ;)

@PetterFriberg There is a reason I ask, but we do not need drama, right?

@ThorstenS. the Tavern can handle drama

10:26 PM
Popcorn is on @ShadowWizard

Not good idea, my popcorn always burn and get tons of those black non edible corns. ;(

@ShadowWizard Ah no, not necessary...currently.

lol all good.
Without @Bart around, drama is less fun anyway. :D

but no pops :(

@Pops... was he ever around here?
(even as CM?)

10:29 PM
He was, but he has retired that account.

:(
Wait, he what??
SE employee who delete their account after being fired... buh.

Sounds like a story

He didn't delete it, just retired it.
in Charcoal HQ on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, Feb 14 at 22:09, by Pops
Thanks! Y'all are awesome (well, I haven't been keeping up the past couple months, but I assume it's safe to extrapolate based on past results). If there's nothing else, I'm going to re-retire this account.

Or is...it forbidden to tell?

@Mithrandir I'm long years in SE and never even heard the term "retire an account". what is that??

10:31 PM
@ShadowWizard Stop using it? Leave it as a historical artifact?

One can't just put account on some "temporary deletion", account is either deleted, or not.
@Mithrandir but I now looked, no such user exist.

I understood it as "now it has cobwebs"

So it's deleted.

...his account exists.

Unless he changed name back to default? Let's see...

ohhhh
So all is good.

Last seen May 11th...so it does not look like retired...at least not long

@Shog9 Do chat suspensions count towards the rule that users cannot nominate themselves to be a moderator if they were suspended during the past year?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog No.

He didn't say goodbye here...
Sep 27 '17 at 18:46, by Pops
How do you find out about the town halls? Should we advertise them other places? (And yes, I realize this is kinda exactly the wrong audience to ask that to, but... I'm here right now.)
Last chat message ^

10:34 PM
@Mithrandir Documentation?

I don't have documentation, but I've seen it.

@ThorstenS. but last real action (comment) is from November 2017 so at most, he's just a "lurker". :)

He's reminiscential...

@Mithrandir seen users who were chat banned nominate for mods?

@ShadowWizard Yes.

10:36 PM
Makes sense... chat ban is something ordinary users can cause.

@ShadowWizard Oh yes.

6 users? 3? Who approve a flag and bang.... 30 minutes ban.

Wait are town halls a thing?

It was a thing.

@thesecretmaster history

10:37 PM
No, I'm referring to chat suspensions by mods.

@thesecretmaster Used to be. Kind of fell off again.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Still.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog don't think there's any indication for that anywhere. Chat ban is chat ban.

A: Is there any cure for type 2 diabetes?

Zeo ArminoYes there's a cure and I'm repeating complete cure for type 2 diabetes, but any of health practitioners and specialists won't accept to hear about it because the empire of evil represented by pharmaceutical industry emperors will lose their billions.The cure was available since beginning of 20th ...

If someone is really abusive in chat it will usually sip through to the main site, and they'll get themselves suspended.

@ShadowWizard There is, in that it will record the history differently in the history that mods can see, and it'll show "automatically suspended" as opposed to "manually suspended" to other users and the user themselves.

10:39 PM
Need a review and delete squad
It would be great if that question could get protected as well (community will auto do after that delete)

@Narusan wrong place, only few here have high rep on Health
Most can just only flag. (NAA/spam etc.)

Enough spam flags are sufficient

Apart from the other reason I asked because I nominated myself for Travel.SE so I wanted to know more how moderators tick

Wasn't smoke here

@Narusan is it spam?

10:42 PM
@ShadowWizard .The cure was available since beginning of 20th century by Pro.George Lakhovsky who has been killed is a mysterious car accident in New York, the miraculous invention is multi waves oscillator Judge for yourself...

@Narusan what about it?

2 mods are on holiday apparently, most of the users as well. It gets tedious and since this is like the third bad post on that question...

You said "Need a review and delete squad". If you think it's spam, you should have just said it plainly... :/
spam never needs review, only spam flags.

Oh, sorry.

Anyway.... most answers on Health contain links. This one appears to be bad answer, but link doesn't appear spammy, to be honest.

10:44 PM
This thing, the wave oscillator, was meant to cure cancer, supposedly. Now it shall also cure diabetes... Whatever.
but any of health practitioners and specialists won't accept to hear about it because the empire of evil represented by pharmaceutical industry emperors will lose their billions

hehe, reminds me of....

@Narusan I think it could do that...in the manual it likely says you need to start jogging and losing weight.
So that the waves penetrate the body better :)

@Narusan the crucial part is, is the answer author affiliated with the product? If so, it's pure spam. If not, maybe someone who really thinks it can be a cure, hence posting what appears to be answer.

@ShadowWizard Does it matter so much?
It's a wrong answer...

@Narusan in that case yes, because it's not just a link.
@Narusan wrong answer deserves downvotes, not flags.
Answer which doesn't even try to answer the question does.
It might be different across sites... not sure about Health. Is there meta discussion there?

10:49 PM
Ok. I'm more pragmatical. I don't care which way it gets deleted :)

@Narusan well, I won't flag it as spam, so can't help with deletion... sorry!

But I can see that it is unfair to some users, because probably the system treats spam different than just bad
@ShadowWizard downvote works as well

You might have a case for it being R/A, but not spam.

@ShadowWizard No, there isn't. But so far we have deleted every false treatment endorsement as spam, no matter whether affiliation was clear or not. That isn't documented though
@Mithrandir R/A?

@Narusan Rude / Abusive

10:53 PM
@Narusan true.
@Narusan that's misusing or even abusing of the spam flags, I'm afraid.
I'm not getting into it or judging now, just stating my opinion.
@Mithrandir oh is posting a wrong answer rude or abusive?

@Narusan I think the nice thing about downvotes is that it is not discussable. If people remove content, it could be seen as suppression/censoring.

@ShadowWizard No, but "...empire of evil represented by pharmaceutical industry emperors..." could certainly be construed that way

@ShadowWizard I am unsure whether users that post false claims, dubious conspiracy theories and - at beast - insufficient treatment or harmful treatment at worst via a purchase site deserve the benefit of doubt whether it is actually spam or not.

@Narusan might be... but still, gray area.

> Pro.George Lakhovsky who has been killed is a mysterious car accident in New York.
Mysterious?
> At age 72, in 1942, Lakhovsky was struck by a limousine. Three days later, he died of his injuries in the hospital . -- Wikipedia
Though, the Wikipedia article could be someone's story too...

11:00 PM
@SomewhatMemorableName well... who drove that limousine? Maybe it wasn't an accident? We can't know.
Of course it's total crap (the answer) but still.... don't see it as spam or offensive.

@Narusan The problem is that even the "empire of evil" claim is defendable. Novartis has now officially stopped research against multi-resistant germs.

s/spam/scam it's offensive to me.

I think I remember reading somewhere long ago about someone who invented a super battery, which was assassinated by cellular phone companies as such battery would means loss of billions for them.
Didn't bother to really dive into it...

@ShadowWizard lol, electrical storage batteries being so good for communication...

@MartinJames yeah, it was something with fuel cells, I think.

11:05 PM
@ShadowWizard I hate teh woo-woo science and associated scamming:(

Ni No Kuni time... cya!

Bie;)

@ThorstenS. Someone I know who works at Novartis claimed that antibiotics won't be an option for long, no matter how much money spent
Maybe it is wiser to spent intelligence on alternatives
Usually, anything that benefits patients large scale also benefits the pharma industry
But I might be biased, and I am not up-to-date or even barely informed of the state of art

Uh, what about the opoid crisis in the USA ? stackoverflow.com/help/privileges/comment
Sorry, wrong link. Unfortunately paywall.

@Narusan I agree, the future is enhancing the body natural defenses.

11:09 PM
The future is reversing the aging!!1!1

@ThorstenS. antibiotics won't help there
and interestingly, they use fentanyl and other stuff used for sedation during surgery

The question is if pharma concerns strive for ethical goals.
Just asking: Are such discussions actually on-topic here?

@ThorstenS. Dunno, we can turn to the health chatrooms
@ThorstenS. usually helping patients and making profit is well-aligned

@Narusan Sure? Then read this: cnbc.com/2018/04/11/…
"Is curing patients a sustainable business model?" In what kind of dystopia have I landed?

11:18 PM
@ThorstenS. Just think about the money (most) states spent in healthcare for elderly.
But to be honest, we won't get far in this debate, as I'm inherently biased

Back to business: How is life as a moderator?

I am not.
Or who are you talking to? (Sorry for interrupting, btw)

@Narusan The others :). As I said, I nominated myself as moderator for Travel.SE and I wanted some input.

@ThorstenS. anything specific you want input on?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Offensive answer detected, toxic answer detected: iCloud Photo Sharing extremely slow by Fittslickaren on apple.SE

11:25 PM
How much work per day?

@ThorstenS. Depends on the site and how much time you want to spend ;). I get the impression IPS is pretty high maintenance for a beta, and it takes at least 30 minutes each day just cleaning comments
I must admit if a comment gets flagged on a post, I check all the answers + the question for a comment clean up
I'm guessing travel will be a bit easier ;)

How much input from other moderators are given? Is chat interaction almost always necessary?

@ThorstenS. moderators do discuss problems in private, if you're not sure there's always ways to reach out for a second opinion. Most of that does happen via chat. I personally like to ask the community whenever I feel it's not something that needs another mod's opinion, so I'm very active in chat. If you don't want too, you don't need too, but chat is the easiest way to communicate
Just remember chat is asynchronous, so don't expect replies immediately :)

I am sure it depends on the personality, but does moderating grow stale quickly? How long does it last until the enthusiasm...suffers?

@ThorstenS. that's indeed probably depending on personality. Do you feel that the tasks you're doing as a regular user are stale? Of course you sometimes feel like it's a chore... But you can always take a day or week off, that's why you're on a team!
I'm a relatively new mod, haven't hit the boring phase yet. I have hit a week where I was disappointed with the way the community was going, and took a little break

11:40 PM
Do you have internal rules for conflict resolution? What if two moderators get angry with each other?

Most rooms have a site-specific moderator room. That is usually the first step for settling disputes.

@ThorstenS. there's always a third ;)

Is there kind of minimum effort you should have for each day/week for being a moderator?

For SO, roughly 30m/day. For other sites... no. And you can always take a vacation.

@ThorstenS. also, if you're already planning on getting into it with another mod, just wait until you've been on the moderator side for a while, where your votes are binding and decisions not as simple as they seem ;)
I'd like to keep answering questions, but it's bedtime :D

11:51 PM
How did you come to the decision that you want to be a moderator?

@ThorstenS. they asked me, I asked a load of questions, got answers and say okay ;)

@Tinkeringbell Thanks, have a nice sleep
Well, bedtime is a good word....
Goodbye...
