@HTTPS Doesn't look related. Ana wants to move to an engineering position. More fun to be paid for working with code than for listening to internet arguments all day. Probably pays more, too.

user315433
Similar moves were made by... Rebecca Chernoff, Adam Lear, and Taryn. I might be forgetting someone.

@SFTP yanno, some folk listen to internet arguments for free

user310756
@TelKitty yeh I noticed that. Clearly some of us on the site didn't have enough Oompf when trying to get help on meta. Kinda annoys me

user310756
And I have to say - April makes a point - Joel has completely ignored me

user310756
@SFTP yep that would be better

user310756
1:17 PM
@TelKitty Cleo just stuck her nose in the window for a pat

user315433
Joel's approach is to post and not engage with responses.

user315433
(See also: Take a Stand)

user315433
Which may be frustrating etc, but saves time on his end, for sure.

user315433
Also avoids getting into a rabbit hole and saying way too much (see: Jeff).

user202362
Rofl, watching Jeff burying himself in a pile of sand was fun ... like he's trying to get out of it, but the more he tries, the deeper he buries himself

user202362
1:24 PM
poor jeff

@YvetteColomb or sometimes you just don't have the spoons or inclination to engage
and in a practical sense - you can't really win all the arguements that's sparked off - you pick the stuff that needs fixing, and try to fix them with the people in the community - not the folks who're standing outside throwing fruit.
So a lot of the time, listening and thinking seems better than well...
(I'm kinda vaguely baffled (my fault?) and sad by all this)

user315433

user202362
@YvetteColomb Cleo can be naughty :p

user202362
and very sweet/cheeky sometimes

@YvetteColomb a pony bit me once ;p
@SFTP sigh today is a bumper day for people who are lost

user202362
1:35 PM
The reason why I avoid social network was partially because once I was on one (linkedin), I did my normal 1337 trolling and ended up with head hunters calling me to stalk instead of sincerely offering me jobs and that scarred me a bit - there were a couple of them and one called me for years. And thank god I had tough, durable skin.

Outside chat, SE is hardly social.

user202362
I social with @Yvette's horses ... and herself :p

@TelKitty sounds interesting
@JourneymanGeek mod power, no?

@ShadowWizard pretty sure anyone can do that
one moment, let me try my alt

alt... lol...
such a nice name for a sock! :D

A control group of Jewish children in the UK had ten times higher rates of allergy; the difference is not accounted for by differences in atopy, social class, genetic background, or peanut allergenicity
Late bloomer.... ;)

1:45 PM

@JourneymanGeek what about it?

I think @πάνταῥεῖ is globally chat banned cause his chat.se parent is SO

@JourneymanGeek weird, chat.SE should be on totally different domain than chat.SO

@ShadowWizard but you need to be able to have SO as a parent for reasons - but its kinda...
OH

user202362

1:47 PM
but how is this related to the invites? That's what I was referring to earlier. :) @Journeyman

@ShadowWizard oh
ANyone can invite?
the only things different are the graphs (oops) and the mod tools button

but I don't think we can't see how many invites a user sent

ohhhh
I guess so
shrug
I forgot mods had additional stuff there ;p

can't you see that on your own account?

1:49 PM
Don't remember ever seeing it, let me test it on you...
nope, don't see any such thing after inviting you to the Den. :D

user310756
@JourneymanGeek true true - wise as always dear Ash :)

I guess its a mod thing

user310756
@TelKitty and we miss you dreadfully xoxox

user202362
<3 u n your crew

user310756
1:52 PM
@SFTP I meant Jeff

user310756
too many Js lol

user310756
@TelKitty I want to get out and snuggle my horses lol

user202362
seriously thinking of going camping with you for a night next week

user202362
needs planning though coz 5 hours return drive

user310756
@TelKitty she's pushy, but she's a good girl, she looks after her herd. I'm very proud of her and tell her that regularly

user310756
1:54 PM
@TelKitty hope so

user310756
I didn't bring a mattress this time. sitting in the drivers seat with pillow

@YvetteColomb Jeff used to be super hands in the early days

user202362
@YvetteColomb thought you would have a semi permanent tent by now

user310756
@TelKitty nope sleep in my car

user310756
it's a wagon

user310756
1:56 PM
I sold my other car

@JourneymanGeek yeah in those days there were no discussions or data research taking months and years. Jeff simply decided and acted upon it whenever he wanted. Good or bad? Can't really know.

user202362
are you doing this every night?

user202362
or just occasionally?

user202362
wagon can be comfy to sleep in though

@ShadowWizard also the network was a lot smaller

user310756
1:57 PM
@TelKitty every night

user310756
bloody dogs

user202362
car is safer than tent

user310756
when she gives birth she will need to lie down

user310756
yes exactly

user310756
safer

user202362
1:58 PM
why not get a shed ... from bunnings say

user310756
I hope they don't come here - we are at the front of the property and I have lights set up - sensor lights and other random lights - so that should scare them off. As a general rule - they won't knowingly go somewhere htey know a person is on patrol

user310756
I spent $1800 on a fence! that is not dog proof

user310756
I can't leave my dogs here

user310756
sersiouly - it upsets me

user310756
it's not my property

1:59 PM
:(

user310756
I'm not throwing more money at it

user310756
I have a dog that is bred to kill wolves. When he is a little older, the wild dogs will not stand a chance

user202362
some shed can be moved around

user202362
and not too expensive

user310756
they need to be put up and in this case, attached to the cattle yard. besides it doesn't solve anything - for it to be big enough to be purposeful you need council approval

user202362
2:02 PM
true

user310756
and the $$ do add up - particularly cos you need flooring

user310756
using treated sleepers even adds up

@JourneymanGeek Yep. That seems to be the reason. Te message just wasn't clear for me @Shadow

user310756
I've looked at portable stables. problem is - a stable needs to be big so the mare doesn't cast herself when she's foaling

user310756
i.e. get stuck in a corner and not be able to get up

user310756
2:04 PM
and the dogs can dig - so you need to put stuff down on the ground or dig deep into the ground to stop them from digging under

user310756
the dingo fences are 8 foot high

@Yvette Did she foal already BTW?

@πάνταῥεῖ @ShadowWizard noticed something in my screenshot I assumed was something everyone had ;p

user310756
@πάνταῥεῖ No - I have two wild horse foals (brumbies). She is due any time

@YvetteColomb <3

2:06 PM
@YvetteColomb horses arn't native are they?

user310756
I need to finish a uni assignment

user202362
@YvetteColomb train cleo to bite dingoes :p

user202362
or kick them

@JourneymanGeek They can be wild though (e.g. in Camargue)

@TelKitty heh I used to know a guy with a guard illama.

user310756
2:07 PM
@JourneymanGeek nope - we have brumbies that hae been here for a couple of hundred years. They are really hardy and purpose built for our terrain

user310756
the government slaughters them - aerial shooting

they're mean, and apparently when the owner got attacked by a horse... the illama knocked down and sat on the horse.
@YvetteColomb :(

user310756
so I took two foals. The little boy and his mum (she is homes elsewhere) were both starving to death

user310756
@TelKitty the horses will all kick them and that's the only thing that will stop them attacking. IF they get access to the foals or while Tuppy is foaling (she will be lying down and unable to get up) they will attack

sad :(

user310756
2:09 PM
they killed the neighbours foal. Attacked a calf while the cow was giving birth Killed a ram, a heap of sheep - now an alpaca and tried to attack a person

user310756
@HTTPS tell me about it. I wanted to reopen it - as it's clearly a question, but the community closed it. I'm not a law unto myself

user310756
a couple of months ago the dogs chased the neighbours horses around so much one ended up tripping and breaking her leg and needed to be shot the next day

user310756
My horses are much calmer than that. Cleo is bomb proof and wouldn't let her herd be run around like that

user310756
I will be glad in 12 months when they're all big enough to be safish

@YvetteColomb that's one of the the things that sucks about being a mod
would be nice to not unilaterally reopen

user310756
2:13 PM
yep

user310756

user310756
that little foal on the left is smaller than my two dogs. The little girl on the right is 4.5 months old - he is 3 months old - was starved. (in the wild)

user310756
His head leans into my hip

aww
poor baby :(

user310756
oh he will be fine - trust me. I rehabilitate my horses and they do very well

user310756
2:15 PM
he's in good hands now

user310756

user310756
this is Tuppy the pregnant girl

user310756
that's me behind her

user310756

why is she covered in mud?

user310756
2:16 PM
that photo is deceptive, as her withers are about as tall as me. I look much taller against her there than I am

user310756
they love rolling in the mud and the dam

also she looks a bit fatter, yay

user310756
it's been hot

user310756
ikr

OP's behaviour probably triggered the close votes, but I agree it's a question asking for input (even though a bad input on its original revision).

user310756
2:17 PM
@HTTPS exactly - there's an inconsistency in the community - they react to emotions - rather than content at times

user310756

user310756
This young colt is a second generation brumby - a Guy Fawkes Heritage Horse (so are the other little foals) they're sturdy

do they try to blow up parliament with gunpowder and treason?

user310756
yes!! and masks

user310756

user310756
2:19 PM
this is my 7 month pup - to give you an idea of his size

god he is adorable. And huge

user310756
he is beautiful

user310756
he is bossed by our other dogs -e ven the little ones

also already looks bigger than my gran's GSD 0_0

user310756
yep

user310756
2:21 PM

@YvetteColomb Calling it a pup looks kinda ... weird :-D

user310756
this is Cleo - she's the lead mare. She's not that tall for a thoroughbred

user310756
@πάνταῥεῖ oh he's a puppy

@YvetteColomb Sure, from age taken

user310756
exactly

user310756
2:24 PM
this gives you some story of Cleo's life pets.stackexchange.com/questions/18199/… she's an amazing girl and i'll never let any of my horses go hungry

@πάνταῥεῖ he's big boned!
and my slightly fat elderly terrier is probably smaller than that puppy's head ;p

user310756
lol

user310756
they have big heads - it's acutally true

user310756
same with the horses. my mum and sister have small dogs

@JourneymanGeek lol

user310756
2:27 PM
they would probably all fit in one horse head tune in God father theme music

horses are big animals tho ;p
other than the little horses

user310756
the owner's dog is going off his head. I can hear a dog barking int he distance, no howling

@YvetteColomb Howling is a sign for dingos, right?

user310756
@πάνταῥεῖ the wild dogs - they're dingo crosses

user310756
they're more dangerous than dingoes

user310756
2:41 PM
the cattel had come up to this yard, I think that was it

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in username, blacklisted user: System Crashed After Gpu Driver Update by ysfl on elementaryos.SE

@SmokeDetector Why?

Username - Position 1-5: ysfl
Blacklisted user - blacklisted for //elementaryos.stackexchange.com/a/15297 (https://m.erwaysoftware.com/posts/by-url?url=//elementaryos.stackexchange.com/a/15297) by the metasmoke API

May be I'm naive, I don't see why YSFL should be something bad?
I found only harmless references

@SmokeDetector it got manually blacklisted due to this post: spamming their forum

3:04 PM
@rene OK I see. But bad keyword is a bit misleading for that case.
Seems blacklisting the user is just fine
Bit of too spammy for my taste

@πάνταῥεῖ sure, its regexes are pretty dumb, that is why you have to check the reasons.

@πάνταῥεῖ Potentially bad keyword in username could include variations

I see. Good so.

Q: Can I ask for general ideas for a world of adult content in WorldBuilding.com from StackExchange?

SobyroTO MAKE THINGS CLEAR: I do not want to create controversy or use inappropriate language for the site. But I firmly believe that you can talk about adult issues with respect and seriousness, without falling into lust or joke. My question would only be to receive general ideas for a university c...

<---The face that launched a thousand ships ... into fleeing

@TelKitty I've noticed that being mentioned at our local press.
Cool little punk. So sad the story :-(

Well AFAIK, SE in general accept adult/mature/R-[18/20/21] related questions as long as the representation is not too explicit
And there's sex on Health.SE
@πάνταῥεῖ instant migration!?

@HTTPS A bit of weird. It's way more general IMO

3:45 PM
Would you guys agree or disagree in principle with a feature request to allow high-rep users (10k+/15k+/20k+ users) to vote to migrate questions on MSE to any per-site meta?

It was OP's fault to ask that too specifically referring to worldbuilding, yes

@HTTPS There's a reason why closing a migrated question as a duplicate doesn't result in migration rejection.

@SonicWizard I've got my opinions about migration, and too often seen it done wrong :-/

The general case is already mention on site policy: "Sexually Explicit Material: Accounts that use Stack Exchange to post sexually explicit or pornographic material, or links to it, will be suspended."
hmm...
gasp
deleting my answers...
well, each site has their custom for handling adult material, though in general they're accepted: anime.se, movies.se, scifi.se

@HTTPS But shouldn't the age restrictions adapted per site then?

3:51 PM
@SonicWizard disagree, I wouldn't trust my self with that feature, nor should you.

@Yvette EEEK, the CR community mods contacted me. There's probably more room for improving my behavior/actions

@Journey I'm with you ;-)
@Ramhound I believe it's enough to tell the OP, that at least X moderators (users) agreed to delete their post. Everything beyond is irrelevant information for them. — πάντα ῥεῖ 3 mins ago

Which version of my automatic comment would you guys prefer? Here's the alternate version I use on well-written questions (rare):
> Welcome to Meta Stack Exchange! This looks like a question intended to be posted on another site in the Stack Exchange network. This site, Meta Stack Exchange, is intended for questions about the Stack Exchange network of Q&A sites. If a site exists on which this question would be on-topic, you may be able to ask your question there, but we have to mark this as "off-topic" for this Meta site. Sorry for the confusion.
This is modeled after the Area 51 Discussions close reason, for people who post questions intended for site proposals there

Perhaps he's already sleeping... it 00:35 on his local time

@SonicWizard Should we (you) rather setup a MSECVR?
@HTTPS We've got plenty of time ...

4:36 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ This is something that I (and @JourneymanGeek) post here from time to time, and it's widely accepted.
Here's the normal version I use on most posts:
> Welcome to Meta Stack Exchange! This site is for questions about the Stack Exchange network of Q&A sites; unfortunately, we have to mark this question as "off-topic" for this site. Please post your question on the correct site, and check to make sure your question is on-topic for the site you've chosen.

@SonicWizard Sure, I'm doing myself from time to time

@rene Since you're someone who leaves such canned comments (using a third template), and @Glorfindel since you use the normal version of my comment, what's your opinion on my alternate version?

@Sonic As I've received a mod message at SE Code Review recently, I'm wondering if that kind of Stock Comments might go against the be nice policy and the general spirit not to unwelcome new users at all. At least as when you hold the privileges to close vote / flag questions for these reasons.

I don't unwelcome users at all. In fact, I'm not the first one to post canned comments here, I started doing so after I saw @rene doing it. Neither his nor my comments (which I've been leaving for a long time) have ever been contested by anyone in the community (save for a short time when I left a survey link in those comments, which I removed after an SE employee told me to do so).

Well, just my 2¢

4:46 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ In fact, I usually act even more compassionate in meta questions than other users. Usually it has a side effect of playing out as good cop, bad cop where the user is more willing to give away info (but that's not my intent).

@SonicWizard The point is, it might not be necessary at all, and often starts to heaten things, which is unwanted.
Leave all your compassion and keep calm.

@πάνταῥεῖ Also, with regards to MSE canned comments: without a comment, the user may not even realize that they're in the wrong place, and think they're getting unexplained downvotes for a perfectly good question (which it would be if it was posted on the correct site). We once had a weird case where a user posted a complaint on Ripoff Report after posting an off-topic question on Meta.

@SonicWizard That's why I've been asking for new users to be notified about pending close reasons in general. Anyways, the'll get more guidance, as soon their question was closed the regular way.

A: Why do users often ask blatantly off-topic questions here on Meta?

Sonic WizardUpdate (January 23, 2018): This answer previously contained a canned comment containing a link to a survey I was running to determine why users post off-topic questions here. Per a request from an SE employee, the link has been removed, and the survey is no longer accepting responses. The team i...

tl;dr: four reasons:
1. Follow a link (e.g. in help pages) to MSE, and not realize they're on a different site

@πάνταῥεῖ I'm always in for better wording. Or is the gist we shouldn't leaving comments at all and just close vote and delete the stuff?
I always like to break up a good thread

4:53 PM
2. Banned from posting on the correct site, willing to post anywhere just to get an answer

See! I'm awesome

@rene That was the gist I received today.

3. Big Mac problem: dissatisfied with their experience at McDonald's, so they go to the car wash with 5-star reviews to get their Big Mac

Maybe you should have posted them in one message ...

4. Terribly-worded site recommendation question, they don't make it clear that they're actually wanting a site recommendation and not their answer here

4:56 PM
I couldn't wait for four ...

@rene Nobody interjects when Shog does this. Why should I be treated any differently?

We should really get mixed content warnings
2

@rene And I took care to leave these comments rarely, and for clearly off-topic stuff only.

Fun fact: I clicked ignore on your first message, so I wasn't aware of your messages

@SonicWizard In principal nothing, but shog is also a cm and you're not

4:58 PM
@Magisch A parody of a bad attempt to fabricate evidence

@SonicWizard well, once I noticed I already screwed up what you intended to post I thought it was better to be a complete trainwreck
But that is just my humor

Which version of my automatic comment would you guys prefer? Here's the alternate version I use on well-written questions (rare):
@rene ^^

@rene We hate fun yaknow

We let @JourneymanGeek clean-up the mess if he sees fit ...

To disclose one single point of the mod message I received:
- you appear to have a number of "template" comments you use and these comments are causing new users to feel unwelcome. Please See Frequently Posted Comments for a set of comments that are more helpful and welcoming. Consider using or adapting those comments.

5:01 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ Out of curiosity, what are those template comments? Maybe it's not due to the fact that you do leave template comments, but rather the wording of those template comments.

@SonicWizard I honestly afraid to make a humor with you because you (almost) always interpret it literally, @SonicWizard ... That's my feeling

Fun fact: I used to copy off-topic close reasons verbatim and post them as comments. This prompted a meta question, whose consensus was that it's OK to leave such comments provided that the close reason actually applies (which means stern warnings if it doesn't).

But I'm probably under mod survey, since I've been asking the CMs to lift my SO suspension earlier than regularly scheduled :-P

@πάνταῥεῖ Can you please tell me what those template comments are?

Here's the one I've used at SECR:
"Welcome to SE Code Review. Please inform yourself, take the [tour] (again), and read up at our [help/on-topic] before posting here. Your question is _off-topic and will be probably closed and deleted soon."_

5:04 PM
@SonicWizard looks fine to me

@πάνταῥεῖ That wording is...off-putting, and your prolific use of that wording was likely what prompted that mod message

@πάνταῥεῖ the (again) part could be removed unless you check if the user has already "informed" badge...

@HTTPS Some of them have, most of them not

@rene Should I use that in all cases, or should I maintain the status quo of using it only for really good questions?

@πάνταῥεῖ that is a bit ... too Dutch to my liking ;)

5:06 PM
@rene Well, I at least used that for things like plain homework dumps :-P

@πάνταῥεῖ Actually, I'd highly recommend removing the word again. Even though it's public information as to whether or not someone's read the tour, it can seem like stalking to a new, unfamiliar user.

I'd promised to give it up at all ...

@SonicWizard well, I also have commented "consider reading the tour once again to understand how this site works" when the user has already "informed" badge but doesn't act like it...

@SonicWizard What likely was prompting that mod message, is that I'm under a sharper survey now, as mentioned.

@πάνταῥεῖ What type of homework dumps?

5:10 PM
@SonicWizard Pictures of the task, or plain text copies.

@πάνταῥεῖ I think you should probably not comment on those, and just let the existing processes do their thing.

And ironically(?), I don't post any welcome comment when their first post looks okay.

@SonicWizard Wasn't that what I said actually?

@πάνταῥεῖ Just wanted to give you a backup opinion

@SonicWizard Thanks, I've got a number of people backing me up already. You're welcome.

5:13 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ get rid of threatening of havock as well. Maybe say something like In the [help] you'll find guidance how to improve your post and you can do so by clicking [edit]. Once improved you'll get better answers that also help future visitors something like that.

@rene That sounds better, yeah.

Or not comment at all ...

to be on the safe side

or... "read the tour or 😊👉🚪"

5:15 PM
^LOL

If we can't emoji it we're lost anyway

@rene It turns out to be using the 💩emoji anyways most of the time. I better leave that behind :-)

@πάνταῥεῖ yeah, those send a strong scent

5:32 PM
@rene May be clearer than "That sounds all dutch for me" though ;-)

6:01 PM
@sonic What are you really bothering with the established mechanics which seem to work well? The question was closed already within an hour. I've seen shit stay longer comments given or not.
I'm expecting a fast response :-D

Asking a question on StackOverflow in a nutshell ^
Surprising to see that even Reddit seems to think there IS IN FACT an issue here

@Alex Reddit answers see issues of all kinds. Is that really relevant?

> I have never once asked a question on there. However, I have read literally thousands of answers.

Well, reddit and quora just leave those idiots even more in the public. At stack overflow they'll get a chance that their dumb stuff will get hidden over time.

@Alex That or people are bad at programming and bad at asking questions and don't want to hear it :D
It's pretty doable to not get crapped on asking questions on SO
If you can read the help center and use the search function

@Magisch Most of them don't even grasp what they should ask.

@πάνταῥεῖ take the advice

Flagging individual comments, closing questions, downvoting and so on still work, but they are arcane systems newcomers don't readily understand. Education helps, but why should someone have to learn complicated rules before doing anything on the site? Teams has potential to spread that initial learning around, but we don't know for sure.

@Alex /r/Programming is a lot more positive of Stack than they were in the past. A humour subreddit might tend to be less... reasonable.

And if you learn how to use the system within a Team, will that really prepare you to use the public site? I'm guessing not.

Not that Reddit's is a particularly valuable perspective in a discussion about civility...

@READandSee-It'sNotaDupe Yes, there is irony that we are seeing these criticisms on Reddit and Twitter.

@JonEricson Probably not really from what (little) I've seen of other internal Q&A sites.

@YvetteColomb Sure, I admitted to do so.

@JonEricson Can you please delete this? It's slated for deletion via review, but then the author will be able to undelete it.

You'll be a bit more prepared, and have seen examples of what would be good posts, but the standards enforced on you are different.

But at least they tend to be more civil, since they're your coworkers. =P

@jon "But I think after 10ish years" I don't think so (after 5 years). It's more Joels Business Needs that let looking that original concept outdated :quack:

@READandSee-It'sNotaDupe Depends on the company, I'd guess.

Probably. :/

Are moderators able to see pending voluntary deletion timers on other users' accounts?

@JonEricson I suppose getting help for your problem is a strong motivator to learn
At least, it was for me when I was just starting out

For sure.

Hook you with that immediate selfish goal and then we draw you in to The Real Mission.

@Magisch Agreed! Knowing how to use a library is a big step further into gaining knowledge!

TABOLAD TABOLADi need programm how can i use my computer to drawing and makeing elekronics system plz thank you??

^ try and make this person feel welcomed

tbh, my education in programming consisted in being sat down and told "This is our codebase. You have $task. Check back with us when you're done so we can give you a new one"
That was it
A computer with internet access and a dev environment and time - nothing else
SO was invalueable during that time

@πάνταῥεῖ My contention is that the way SO tried to address quality problems in the first 5 years set us up for scaling problems. Asking questions is the heart of the system and we did essential nothing to teach that skill.
And no, criticising people after they made the mistake has almost no value in helping them improve.

@JonEricson "and we did essential nothing to teach that skill" I seriously disagree. There's lot of resources available how to do that on site. Not to mention Jon Skeet's work or other people who are actively participating.
Maybe you missed to make it easier to find that stuff in first place. But if someone lacks that skill already, they'd probably miss to find the syndrome behind the symptom.

@SFTP Yeah, crap gets through. We still need the blunt tool of blocks and bans. But that's not the sort of contribution people are talking about. We're talking about eager users who get shot down for not knowing the "proper" way to ask. Posts like that are in a different category.

Becoming famous carries a burden with it. And that might also engage people calling it elitist and arrogant, if its the real case or not.

@πάνταῥεῖ I agree we have plenty of resources. It's a lot smoother than Usenet was. But the standard has changed. I'm really frustrated with myself for not pushing on this string:

Q: Can we make this meta site work for mentoring?

Jon EricsonLast month Shog9 proposed Stack Overflow Academy on Area 51. I was skeptical and thought it was sort of a joke. The idea that anyone would go to yet another Q&A site in order to a ask a question on Stack Overflow seemed crazy. But the more I thought about it, the more I liked the proposal. Over t...

@JonEricson Interesting, because I was an active member at the c++ usenet sites decades ago. And the point of moderation always was about quesiton quality.
The newbz want to get answers for their silly homework questions and due projects asap. There's no incent for them getting mentored, or seeing a different way just to dump their shit at the interwebz. The quora, reddit, yahoo answer models just encourage them to do so. I don't see a way to teach them better here in an automated way. We seem to have to live with that.n

I mostly participated on unmoderated Perl groups. Seems like every third new thread was about Matt's Script Archive, which was widely considered a terrible resource. (But maybe I have selective memory.)

@JonEricson Perl programming is toys ;-)

@JohnDvorak Good example!

@πάνταῥεῖ I've thought about how much easier it is to write a useful answer than a quality question and wished there was a way to force people to answer first. Then I read Joel's blog post:
> The second problem was that EE let you get a free membership if you answered a certain number of questions. As it turned out, the people who were most desperate for free memberships were not exactly the best programmers in the world, and they wrote low quality answers to questions just to get those free memberships. And the quality of answers on the site went down.

@JonEricson That's simply nonsense. I am one of the best programmers in the world of course!

Heh. And there are so many people who would be great SO users who are convinced they aren't good enough.
