._.
I'm looking at the affliate ads post and.... I'm vaguely horrified...
@PatrickHofman If StackOverflow decides that they need to serve ads to pay for this, I'd be ecstatic to see them close their doors. Too bad that's not going to happen. (since it would make way for something even better, which we don't even bother to imagine because SO is sorta good enough) — Jon Kiparsky yesterday
First: why the heck isn't SE a charity? Nonprofit guy here. If your organizational philosophy doesn't call for top-hats looking for a payday, a nonprofit structure makes a lot of sense. Second, the way SE turns evil is they go bankrupt: as a for-profit, the bankruptcy trustee is legally obliged to get max possible dollar for the creditors, period -- and will sell SE to the highest bidder. Not so for a nonprofit, mission and donor intent figure heavily into disposition. — Harper 4 hours ago

@Catija this happens repeatedly. For some reason, the tag engine arbitrarily decides to serve old results; doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Affects the API, which affects the bulletin.

> decides to..
@Shog9 oh dear, they've gone self aware? ;p

"Unfeature that, will they... THINK AGAIN!"

I was serious about reliving failure... that quarterly award was a failure.

Ano
12:27 AM
@Shog9 Not too long ago, there was a bug where a question with a spam-deleted answer and a non-spam-deleted answer from a new user would get auto-protected. Is this still present?

try it & see...

Ano
If it still exists, I think that new trigger (two spam-deleted answers) was written rather crudely (just consider a single spam-deleted answer as two answers from new users deleted, so that two such answers would hit the threshold for three answers from new users deleted). But this has the above edge case.

ehhh
If its something that badly needs unprotecting. You can ask?
We, shockingly enough, have these things called meta sites, and we're literally removed protection cause someone with a clue asked us to, nicely.

Ano
@JourneymanGeek I don't want to report a bug if it's already been fixed.

erm. You just reported it. Just outside the usual, auditable, tracked channels.

Ano
12:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek No, to report the bug would involve asserting that it happens. On the other hand, I'm asking if it still happens.
I was planning to file a bug on MSE if the answer to my question was "yes"

so you're asking about a bug you don't know exists?

Ano
@JourneymanGeek I don't know if it still exists

if a bug exists, and no one comes across it, does anyone actually get affected by it?

This is a known bug with how the calculation is done when an answer gets spam-deleted (a second answer being deleted as spam actually ends up being counted twice, when it should only be counted once, which causes the auto-protection to go off regardless of whether the previous deleted answer is new-user-deleted or spam-deleted). — animuson ♦ Jan 27 at 3:28

but but....
You basically get the subset of >10 onsite rep users who have a great answer affected.
Is it really worth bugging people over 'in case?'

Ano
12:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek Did that bug get magically fixed due to some other build change between January 27 and now? If it did, I'd be filing a false bug report. I'd be asserting something that's false. So I want to know if the bug still exists before reporting it.

then why report it if you haven't come across it?

Ano
@JourneymanGeek Because a bug is a bug.

I get its probably tempting to want to report all the things.

Ano
Any user with 10k+ on SO can see the problem there.

But but, if you're constantly asking people about stuff so you can report it, it gets annoying fast.
So, you should really stick to bugs you run across, feature requests you feel you need....
not "eh, this thing was an issue a few years ago, is it fixed yet?"

Ano
12:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek Of all the bugs I've reported on MSE, I've asked about none here in chat. Of those I did, those were already fixed (or the special case of the multiple-NAA-flags bug reported with my old account).

Well, you are here.

@Shog9 so, there are examples of it involving non-locked posts?

yep

Ano
@Catija You don't happen to know some people from your time in casting, do you? Or still be a bit involved in that?
@JourneymanGeek There are old, longstanding bugs from 2012/2013 that haven't been fixed yet. One of my answers has examples of such bugs.

There probably are. And there probably is an internal system to keep track of those.

Ano
12:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek So then why haven't they been fixed? Obviously their tracking system doesn't notify them of these.

@Ano presumably because there's other more pressing things....

@Shog9 hmm. Seems interesting that all three of the current ones are locked.
@Ano Why?

Ano
@Catija I have a friend who's in my program but is also interested in drama/acting

@JourneymanGeek Adam Lear once said, "trivial issues are super easy and trivial to fix". Why not just fix them? It will take very little time to fix those.

@Ano cause trivial issues often arn't

Ano
@JourneymanGeek So then that statement was false?

cause software will eat the world, cause its a shambling, squelching mass.
@Ano cause 'trivial' sometimes isn't

@Catija that is interesting
but... I've seen it without that
probably just coincidence
or... two bugs with similar outcomes

Ano
@Catija Meaning?

12:57 AM
@Shog9 hmmm... maybe... Dennis was talking about the same thing this morning in the TL, locked post still in featured.
@Ano Chance of getting in front of a casting director without an agent is low.

Ano
@Catija What's an agent?
(In this context)

Re: the protect thing... Was actually fixed - partially - back in Nov. The remaining behavior amounts to a convenience taken in the code: it'll protect at 3 deletions of new-user posts and 2 spam deletions, but if there's a new-user deletion and a spam-deletion in that order it'll count the spam-deletion twice and protect.
can write that up tomorrow, but gotta leave now; have a good evening@!

A talent agent, or booking agent, is a person who finds jobs for actors, authors, film directors, musicians, models, professional athletes, writers, screenwriters, broadcast journalists, and other freelancers in various entertainment or broadcast businesses. In addition, an agent defends, supports and promotes the interest of their clients. Talent agencies specialize, either by creating departments within the agency or developing entire agencies that primarily or wholly represent one specialty. For example, there are modeling agencies, commercial talent agencies, literary agencies, voice-ov...

Rob
@JourneymanGeek My main gripe with Pluralsight is the tests have some really esoteric questions. They prompt people to 'improve their IQ' by taking their courses. But from what I've seen, their courses don't cover those esoteric parts

Rob
Though, it is probably the best 'online training' site I've tried

@ShadowWizard That pic's from Seattle, right?

@SensibleAlexander well, it's a tree after all.... :D
@JohnDvorak someday... I'll change it to a yellow lemon tree

Ano
@SensibleAlexander Did you even take a close look at it? It's made of glass.

@Ano it looks like a tree from the chat, so yes, I did take a look at it.
should I blame my brain to identify that as a tree?

Ano
7:26 AM
@SensibleAlexander No, that's a valid conclusion
To be fair it took me a few seconds to identify that as glass, and only because I've been to Seattle

ooh
@SensibleAlexander is that a chihuli?

Ano
@JourneymanGeek Chihuly is a person's name

7:54 AM
@SensibleAlexander the name is still very different.... ;)
@Ano never been to Seattle so no, I don't remember for sure where I took the picture, probably in New York though. It was in 2008 during 3 weeks vacation.

@ShadowWizard In Seattle they have a full museum of Chihuly glass art, which is itself glass-walled

Another possibility is San Francisco.
@Ano nice... well, it wasn't that museum. :)

Ano
@ShadowWizard That's a long drive from San Diego

@Ano of course it's not really a tree.. but looks like a tree. :D
@Ano umm... yeah, so? It's a long drive from lots of other places... (i.e. what's your point? :))
Never been to San Diego either.

Ano
@ShadowWizard So we're not going to visit SF as often as other further places, such as Seattle
Especially given that the cost of plane tickets is pretty uniform here in the States

@ShadowWizard Well, San Diego is that quaint metropolis away from bustling LA/Orange County

especially the post suggesting that we're all so enslaved to SE we'll buy anything they advertise
I've clicked a couple ads from SO because they were interesting, but they don't really bother me

... best arguement against that?
Steve Feldman on October 26, 2016

Hi! I’m Steve Feldman, Senior Ad Ops Manager at Stack Overflow. My whole life I’ve been fascinated by advertising. Even as a kid, I wondered what a company was trying to tell me by using one word instead of another in an ad. Over time, I developed a strong (read: subjective) opinion of what makes an ad ’good,’ and what makes an ad ’bad.’ It took me many years– in fact, it wasn’t until joining the Ad Sales team at Stack Overflow– to finally figure out that the common thread shared by the best ads is relevance. Maintaining that relevance is how we’ve managed to avoid one of the biggest issues facing publishers today: ad blocking. …

9:48 AM
As long as they don't do native advertising I couldn't care less tbh

they did throw ads on tags for a bit
and tbh, the unwritten thing here is "Ok, so careers is a thing. Lets try to make money off QA again"
and that kinda swings things back to "how do we keep our QA users happy, and maybe buy stuff off ads, just maybe"

This entire point is moot anyone that doesn't want ads can use an adblocker anyways ... it's not like SE discourages or forbids those

@Magisch They moved away from Adzerk because they were focusing on native advertising more than SE's advertising

@Ano who? adzerk?

Ano
@Magisch Yep

native advertising is a big business now
I really don't like it tho

Ano
@Magisch That's why I use Nano Defender

@JourneymanGeek I think logic dictates for them this: the users produced already useful posts, shouldn't be annoyed with the ads. The users coming for the content what we already produced, should dig through the flashing animgifs before they get what they want.

11:38 AM
@peterh any suggestion of flashing animated gifs...
I ONLY REGRET I HAVE ONE DOWNVOTE TO GIVE!

11:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek A+ business sense and knowledge of how businesses work

do you need to re-enable animated avatar? I should still have the required user-script

12:02 PM
@JNat your avatar was animated? Nice.
Rotating Megaman I see
(yep, the script still works)

There's an animated avatar script? How does that work?

12:21 PM
@doppelgreener it removes the "anti animation" feature, aka setting the original image as the avatar. (it does not animate existing avatars)
By adding "?s=[something]" to the image URL, it's both resizing it and removing any possible animation. And also ruins transparency, but that might be a bug.

@peterh stack's ads are all static and non flashing, non autoplaying and free of audio

Ano
If only Adblock Plus would no longer try to monetize Acceptable Ads...while they did move control over the filter list to an independent review board, that's still their main source of income.

@Magisch should be... sometimes advertisers try their luck and succeed, but it should be reported and SE will remove it.

Ano
Competitor AdBlock, while allowing Acceptable Ads to be turned on/off, makes no money off of it
(They didn't even allow it until control was moved to the independent review board)

don't all the cool kids use ublock?

Ano
12:25 PM
@JourneymanGeek I use Nano Adblocker

I use Non Adblocker

Ano
A fork of uBlock Origin that is designed to work with Nano Defender
Nano Defender is a helper extension that bypasses anti-adblock measures employed by sites (e.g. Forbes)
It can also be installed with uBlock Origin, but you need to do a lot of messing around to get it to work, so they made their own custom fork with the customizations already in place

@ShadowWizard that's fine
I'm currently using pihole (for blocking phone call homes apparently) + ublock per system

Ano
I was a long time user of AdBlock, until Anti-Adblock Killer (and Continued) became unmaintained

I generally don't mind advertisements in sites, as long as they're not really HUGE. Most sites are fine, those which are not... well I simply don't use them.

Ano
12:30 PM
@ShadowWizard I find any kind of advertising, even small and text-based, to be annoying and distracting, due to my A-specness
In fact, one of my earliest MSU posts asked about a way to buy out of ads (because my adblocker was leaving a huge empty space where the ad was supposed to be)

replace all the ads with unicorns

Ano
@SensibleAlexander Remember CatBlock?

@ShadowWizard every 6 or so months, I try to turn off adblock

@ShadowWizard Where do you have that info from?

and then I just go blech and turn it back on

Ano
12:32 PM
@JourneymanGeek Occasionally I do go into private mode, where no extensions run and I see ads

(though for stuff like webcomics, I try to support them in other ways)

@Ano first time hearing that, and apparently there's a movie with the same name

Ano
@SensibleAlexander It was a 2011 April Fool's joke in AdBlock where they temporarily programmed it to replace ads with cat pictures, instead of merely blocking them
Due to popular demand, it became available as a pay-monthly extension, but became unmaintained (and free to download) in 2014
My goal with ad-blocking is to remove as many ads as possible from all websites. To be honest, it's not because I find them annoying, or for privacy and performance reasons. I just want all ads to be gone, because I just ideologically hate them.

Nov 15 '16 at 16:00, by Derpy
The day ADS will be legally required to be hosted by the hosting site instead that references to file on other servers I never asked to open and the hosting site will be legally required to ensure that they don't contain malvertising I will think about enabling them back. Not before.

Ads are a waste of screen estate, and animated ads are a waste of screen estate and a major distraction
I'd rather let somebody mine on my machine for five minutes.

And I use a killer extension because if I were to add up the amount I'd be paying websites for ad-free access to content, it would add up to more than a thousand dollars per month, just for content that's otherwise free.

@Magisch they brought Mr. Friend that's all the proof I need.
He came out of "nowhere", from a non-programming background, as someone to make major changes. That's how I see it.

@ShadowWizard ... non programming background?
he's a ex MS PM

Ano
And it's quite a waste, I'm not browsing all of those websites every day, but just for the assurance that I won't see ads in the rare circumstance I come across the website.

he worked on office. ... apparently he's to blame for the ribbon...

I never said it's bad... so far it generally looking good, and might make SO look more "modern".
@JourneymanGeek oh. So maybe should have said "non SE related background" aka someone from the outside.

12:44 PM
and SE didn't have a QA PM for quite a bit so... its not like he replaced anyone

@JourneymanGeek exactly, it's a new role, to do new things.

@ShadowWizard I'd grant that, but off the top of my head, a lot of PMs are.

> he's to blame for the ribbon

@ShadowWizard cause for quite a while I think it was quite literally whatever Jeff and Joel thought was right

Ano
@JourneymanGeek @ShadowWizard You know, AdBlock used to merely strip the ad out of the page, while letting the ad download, so it would still count as an impression and they would still earn money for it. But they decided to block downloads altogether, for various reasons (performance + technically fraud).

@ShadowWizard this makes him seem like he's a hired gun

@JourneymanGeek and an inappropriate hired gun, at that

@JourneymanGeek but he is... (hired, not a gun.)

@ShadowWizard on the other hand, I've never had SE changes take so much input.
usually its "eh, this is what is is"

@JourneymanGeek you probably weren't around in the big profile page redesign then? It took like three announcements and stages, each asking for feedback.

He even talked to someone who was having accessibility changes
@ShadowWizard its plausible us folks in lesser sites weren't consulted, or I wasn't that into SE then ;p

Ano
@JourneymanGeek But at the same time, when he was <2k, he needed to suggest edits

and he could have gotten the diamond at any time.

Adding mod-only tags without diamond just looks weird, lots of people would just get confused by it.

And meta, to me is the second hardest site I've been on

12:51 PM
I guess it's probation period for SE staffs: do your work without diamond

@SensibleAlexander naw, he mentioned he chose not to

@Derpy I very vaguely remember it, it was mostly floating around in 2010-2011; I joined in 2013

> It’s just taking a while to get around to implementing it*, as it doesn’t behave like any other badge; it’s a manually maintained key-value pair of users who have “contributed to Stack Overflow in an unusual way.” Typically this means you’ve found a serious security exploit and sent it to us privately rather than making it public or exploiting it and harming the site. But that’s not the only way to earn it!
Jeff Atwood on April 02, 2009

In case you were wondering, no, we haven’t forgotten about the Hacker Badge. Which is sort of like Eric Raymond’s universal hacker emblem.

It’s explained thusly by Mr. Raymond:

When you put the glider emblem on your web page, or wear it on clothing, or display it in some other way, you are visibly associating yourself with the hacker culture. This is not quite the same thing as claiming to be a hacker yourself — that is a title of honor that generally has to be conferred by others rather than self-assumed. But by using this emblem, you express sympathy with hackers’ goals, hackers’ values, and the hacker way of living. …

Ano
1:01 PM
@Derpy But "hackathon" doesn't have anything to do with "hacking" in that sense. In this case, it means "building".

(weird - didn't expect wikidictionary onebox to be that bad)

@Derpy it is that bad ;p

Wow. After rejoining SE my MSO posts have achieved a rather high number of upvotes.

@Feeds that's great :D

I kinda needed that ;)

I'm dealing with a lot more Dunning–Kruger stuff than that. Including among undergrads.

Also, impostor syndrome is usually better called "reality check".

Does Feeds convert feed data from UTF-8 into ASCII or something? Because the alt text for that image says "–" when it should be an en dash.

@if.... Worldbuilding has many :)

Q: Minor encoding issue with xkcd alt texts in chat

Andras DeakIt is a fairly well-known albeit undocumented feature of SO chat that xkcd links one-box, and they even preserve the alt text. This is a great feature (which can't be said about one-boxing github gists). Today's xkcd post revealed a minor encoding issue wherein an em dash in the alt text got man...

@if.... out of left field but: If they have a furnace they have cobblestone, enough to make a stone sword. If they have an anvil, they have iron, a lot of iron. So they could make a iron sword and iron armor and easily kill it. Then again, it is minecraft, you could easily kill it regardless.

Too bad they couldn't crown her...

@if.... impostor syndrome is when you understand just enough to understand how little you understand

@Magisch if they are playing Minecraft, they should have mods. If they have mods, I assume they can just use whatever advent of ascension / crazycraft gives them to dispose of the witch :P

@Derpy advent of ascension is pretty garbage tbh
but yeah I'm playing modern skyblock 3 departed rn

@Magisch use mythical creatures....
and bring my greetings to Ursa Mayor.

minecraft combat is really one dimensional
latency notwithstanding there is almost no way to fail unless the mod has been coded to fail you unless you have X armor and Y weapons and Z buffs/consumables.

terraria is two dimensional?

3:24 PM
well, 2+1

@SensibleAlexander yeah, but minecraft is 3d

imagining one dimensional combat in three dimensional world, perhaps like Flatland

@Magisch minecraft player mobility is almost non-existent. This means that combat is pretty similar to non-action morpg games - using only autoattack
all there is is damage mitigation. And that almost always means Enchanted Golden Apple.

... this is getting seriously lame. After Kaspersky, now they want to ban Huawei smartphones?

3:59 PM
@Derpy heh, let's keep it quiet, OK?

4:40 PM
@Derpy Easy way to get rid of them is to dig out completely beneath them, (leaving the blocks they're standing on), and then ultimately getting rid of those blocks. The witch falls in a hole, you cover the hole, it de-spawns eventually. Taking on a witch without a ranged weapon or something with sharpness on it is probably not going to end well unless you've got a lot of milk.
I hate running into them early-game. I usually just log out and let them de-spawn. Same for when the four horsemen show up (also common in a plains biome, where I otherwise like setting up base)

@TimPost remind me of the good old atom smasher technique with lava or sand.
Which, unsurprisingly is very close to the similar technique in Dwarf Fortress

They're working on it.

@Catija Hmm I do wonder

Hi everyone, got another question here :)
When you look at the leaderboards, does the users with total reputation go up in values. So like when you look at SO 8.4 million users have 1 rep. The one above that says 400000 users have 200rep
So my question is are the 200 rep users counted in the 1 rep one?

user315433
6:37 PM
Yes. If you have 200+ rep, then you have 1+ rep.

user315433
The categories are not described as 1<=rep<200.

@Derpy IMO that's the near-best outcome from this point.

Replace some of the branding and ads with MSDN stuff, keep the team and code, tie Careers into LinkedIn.

Microsoft gets the positive developer karma and brand lift, and the sites get to continue operating without needing to chase profit.

A sale to Microsoft would sort of make sense. They bought LinkedIn, so the Careers / "developer story" part fits in. MSDN could be totally replaced by SO then. And .NET Docs could be integrated better.

user315433
Minus the docs

@ShadowWizard Can you tell me anything about that link you posted... the "participation" page? Is there a post that explains it at all? Is it the same as: meta.stackexchange.com/a/149097/284336
