4:00 PM
sounds like an XY problem

4:10 PM
@ShadowWizard about twenty new kids (that's a lot). Nobody actually went swimming - it was a bit of knocking them around and making them do push-ups and sing silly things, then poyka on the beach. No pranks.

4:26 PM
@Mithrandir ohhh. Nice! So all went well?
Who was the chef?

A few people helped toss things in a pot
s/a pot/four pots

Don't be modest... you did most of the job, right? ;)

@ShadowWizard My tzevet did most of the behind the scenes stuff for all the shows that happened for four hours before ;)
No, it was other people

@Mithrandir I mean with the poyke. :)
In South Africa, a potjiekos , literally translated "small-pot food", is a dish prepared outdoors. It is traditionally cooked in a round, cast iron, three-legged pot, the potjie, descended from the Dutch oven brought from the Netherlands to South Africa in the 17th century and found in the homes and villages of people throughout southern Africa. The pot is heated using small amounts of wood or charcoal or, if fuel is scarce, twisted grass or even dried animal dung. The dish is also popular in Israel, known as poike in Hebrew. == History == Traditionally, the recipe includes meat, vegetables like...

Exactly. The poyka wasn't us

4:31 PM
ohh. Thought you were behind it. Oh well! :D
So what was your role in all of this? @Mith
eh
Well, first, don't look deeply into Sql Server's eyes. If you are in proximity to Sql Server, avoid intimate contact. And if you get drunk and wake up next to Sql Server, leave immediately. — Won't 12 mins ago
Won't hitting again. lol

Would you consider a) , b) and c) meta tags?

Probably yes

but we're on meta so meta is good

I think I looked at venting last week

It's sensible to edit the questions to get rid of them?

@rene it's not for you

5:40 PM
:D
@AnneDaunted I have no problem with that. Go ahead.

Thanks!

I've done flexibility for you ...
To show off I guess

No more venting then. Maybe blacklist the tag as well to make clear from this point on wards we're just a happy family ....

6:16 PM
@rene But we need regular venting! Otherwise the smell becomes unbearable

With me around you're guaranteed of a smell ...

Yeah, you're not very welcoming to those with Hay Fever or sensitive noses! :P

flowery smell is generally pleasant to the nose

Ever smelled Tagetes or Pelargonium? (I also have hay fever.)

Oh God... Tagetus. Thanks, I now have flashbacks

6:24 PM
Of what?

Working the register at a garden store and selling/handling whole carts full of them. I worked Saturdays and the stench would linger till at least Mondays

hehe

Dianthus was really bad too
And lavender of course

Lavender is great. In moderation I guess

Yeah indeed. But most people buy them like 8 at a time (or more)
Hyacinths were also a mess
People would buy those in bulk too

6:30 PM
I love lavender

Lavender chills you down. Great stuff, and also smells so lovely.

Yeah a spring or two will do that

There's a largeish sidewalk field of lavender on my way to work, in the summer and spring it's always lovely

Not whole bushes at a time ;)

@Tinker Your former avatar pic was really more serious ;)
@Magisch Have you ever been in the france Provence when the lavender is ripe for harvest? The whole countryside smells of it.

6:34 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ So? You don't like this one? I kinda do :)

@Tinkeringbell I believe your former was better, but it's your choice anyways.

:(
Most reactions were pretty positive though. I'll keep this one, at least till the end of the year.

@Tinkeringbell I like that it has glasses
suits your personality well

@Magisch So I can conclude from your avatar pic you're kind of an acanthoid person? :3

Heh... Minion avatar, and:
> I will leave the code bellow

8:45 PM
@Tinkeringbell Your avatar has too much dark red in it, which jumps out at me and is rather distracting. It would be great if you changed it to a lighter shade. (Otherwise, I like it!)

@Tinkeringbell Well

@πάνταῥεῖ I had a thing for minions for a while :D
In the end, I ended up crocheting too many and lost interest ;)

Minionbell

@Tinkeringbell Is that a Mini-model Galaxy phone in the background?

8:57 PM
Nice knitting, crocheting!
They all share the glasses so far ..

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog No clue. That one was a few phones ago.

@Tinkeringbell Also, would you mind changing the shade of red to a lighter one? This one jumps out at me and is distracting.

@πάνταῥεῖ I make things without glasses too :P
I've made a few blankets, a hat, scarves, flamingo's, baby booties ;)
A few dinosaurs.

Open le tinkering shoppe
a online store for crochet art

@Tinkeringbell I can hardly afford anything without glasses meanwhile. Yes I am old, I can't deny :P

9:00 PM
@Magisch I've sold a lot of the baby booties when I was still working retail, they made a nice addition to my salary. The small minions I posted above sold quite well too

@Magisch What's the dutch translation for that?

But in the end, you never get paid for the effort you put into it.
@πάνταῥεῖ Tinkel winkel :P

LOL
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I love your work. It's actually invaluable ;)

@πάνταῥεῖ Meh, it actually isn't. But if I think that I work about 4-6 hours on a pair of baby booties, and then count the prices of the yarn... I should sell them at arount 50-70 euros :P No one is going to pay that for them :P

Well, there's a difference about doing things just for a hobby (like I am doing moderation of the `[tag:c++]` tag at the Stack Overflow site), or doing things to get paid.
No one really would pay for my regular hour rate what I am doing there.
Though your crotchets are so nice, and I already earn a lotta money with my stupid job, I'd even consider to buy some of your stuff at a fair rate.

9:11 PM
;) You're overdoing the complimenting XD

@Tinkeringbell No, I am just trying to get that fecking formatting correctly ;)
@Tinkeringbell Your crocheting work seems to be great, really!

Thank you :)

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog just saying: this reads as very arrogant. If you've ever wondered why people here get annoyed at you so often... this is a good example.

@Tinkeringbell Your avatar has too much dark red in it, which jumps out at me and is rather distracting. It would be great if you changed it to a lighter shade. (Otherwise, I like it!)
There was no response, so I wasn't sure if she had read the message or not.

Did it ever occur to you there's no good way to reply to ... such ridiculous remarks?

9:20 PM
@Tinkeringbell I...don't see how that's ridiculous?

@Mithrandir Good that I am currently ignoring some people active at this room.

@πάνταῥεῖ No matter what, it's not nice to keep pointing that out ;)

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog The color of someone else's avatar is none of your freaking business. It's weird to tell someone to change their avatar in the first place and you did it in a really condescending and arrogant way. That really wasn't what I wanted to see joining the room.

If you want more pretty crochet pictures, stop doing that @πάνταῥεῖ :P

@πάνταῥεῖ not helping

9:22 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog if you were at a friend's house getting ready to go out and you asked them to change their shoes because "they have too much dark red in them, which jumps out at me" it'd be equally insulting. It's something they chose as their own style because they like it and that's how they want to look, why should they change how they appear to everyone just to suit you? (let me know if my tone is too blunt, I don't mean to make you feel bad, just explain)

@Tinkeringbell Okeh! I just couldn't resist to point out. I'll stop doing that.

You don't learn from anything. You've been told that your tone constantly annoys people. You give an impression that you always think that you know better than everyone else. Frankly, I'm sick of it and not going to put up with it much longer.

...

@Mithrandir Does that go for me, or the other one?

@πάνταῥεῖ Not you ;)

9:25 PM
You've been warned, and warned, and told how to improve. Nothing has changed.

lol just in time

@AndrasDeak Okay... Shooo shooo everone! No need to all drop in at like right now :P

oh, ok i misunderstood too. 😋 carry on

No, I want to hear more of Sonic's convincing arguments

9:27 PM
The commentary isn't helping, y'all.

Wait, now I have to be helpful and constructive? :P

Sonic: I've lost count of how many times people have given you advice on how to improve your communication. It feels like you've just ignored all of it.

@Mithrandir Two questions. First, I didn't consider it weird to give someone feedback about their avatar and how it can be made more accessible. I don't see how its weird, and it would be great if I got an explanation why. Second, how could I have phrased this better so there wasn't so much arrogant tone?

one minor thing-y? I DIDN'T ASK FOR YOUR "FEEDBACK".
So. It's weird, pushy, demanding, arrogant, and a whole lot more.

@Mithrandir They're spectrum autistic people self outlined. Is there a conscious way to communicate?

9:30 PM
Should I emphasize what I said in a message earlier?
Someone else's avatar is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.

Well, I am out of ideas for inclusion?

Moderation related stuff aside, people don't need others giving their opinion on their avatars. Someone's avatar is their PERSONAL CHOICE.

Let me lighten up the mood by noting that for the first time today I found an image I've been looking for i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/168/878/a76.png
(to be filed under "cannot be unseen" :D)

@AndrasDeak Oh, I have another one of those somewhere :P
Not really suited for chat though. Forget about it ;)

@AndrasDeak I am playing just blind.

9:34 PM
@Mith if I may: I don't think you have to explain it WITH THIS LARGE LETTERS multiple times. They didn't get it on their own. They'll either get it after an objective explanation or they won't. There's no way or need to convince them otherwise. It's a matter of fact that they were in the wrong.
(then again I'm an avid user of the kick feature)

@AndrasDeak at this point I'm pretty much just venting

Yelling never was a good way for emphasis.

@πάνταῥεῖ yo, this got flagged as offensive, and I agree with the flag. Please try not to dismiss the opinions of others for reasons beyond their control (such as purported autism). You should understand this as your concern seems to be around others dismissing your opinions. I'll dismiss flag for now.

But as I am blinded I probably don't know what I am talking about here :3

@πάνταῥεῖ you're forgetting that everyone knows you by now so "good faith" is a shaky assumption :P

9:37 PM
be mindful in your communication and be sure to follow our policies
speak nicely to others or don't speak at all
and with that I vanish into the darkness that is work, later all

@AndrasDeak I just replicated from what I've seen earlier about particular users I am ignoring meanwhile.

If you see a fellow kid eating his snot doesn't mean you should try yours

@AndrasDeak Heh... in what language did that proverb originate? :D

9:40 PM
you know, being the person man and whatnot
@Tinkeringbell I just made that up, actually :P

Ahhh. language evolution it is ;)

in Hungarian we have "just because someone jumped into the well doesn't mean you should too"

@AndrasDeak Same here, but with canals/ditches ;)
or 'from a bridge'

@AndrasDeak The water might be to shallow probably :3

@Tinkeringbell because if you guys dig a well you're already in the Earths' crust?

@πάνταῥεῖ depends on the season

@AndrasDeak This summer dried everything out seriously :P

@Mithrandir I see an aleph
(three alephs, actually)

I think I see an 'm' too?

upside down m, also known as w
oh no, that's just shin
(I forgot I know that letter too)

@AndrasDeak Three Alephs, a Bet, two Hays, a Vav, four Yuds, A Mem, a Mem at the end of a word so it's different, a Nun at the end of a word, a Kuf, three Shins, and a Taf.

@Mithrandir Well, symbols have semantics when put together?

also values

Of course!
The whole tends to become more than the sum of it's parts.

does the sum change if you step into the same river twice?

9:50 PM
@AndrasDeak That's a similar but different thing.

it was a trick question, you should've said "you can't do that anyway"

It doesn't need a river though, a stream would do well.
How can we consider to be "inclusive" and encouraging here, but telling out specifically annoying and commonly disagreed behaviors here?
I already was banned from this room for advising to get professional help is urgently needed. I'll not do that again of course.

You don't do anything. Raise an objection to unsavoury behaviour in an objective, calm and markedly non-ad hominem way. Flag what is offensive. Otherwise leave it to the room owners to moderate.
in your case I'd skip the "raise objection" part due to your long history of missing the tone :P

@AndrasDeak I am not ad hominem you should notice.

How is discussing the position of a person on the autism spectrum not ad hominem?

10:03 PM
@AndrasDeak How I am discussing that beyond a person already committed that and wants any reasonable feedback?

@πάνταῥεῖ I'd really rather you not also chime into this every time it comes up

It's not "beyond". It's the "up-to" which is the discussing. I didn't say "don't discuss beyond a point". I said "don't discuss"

It develops a "piling on" kind of effect, which is detrimental to the goal
and it's very easy to veer into personal attack territory

ad hominem would mean I am referring to some very particular user, which I am not doing here. I am still not sure how to deal with such kind of self disclosed, autism spectrum users here in an inclusive way.

by doing not
tavern isn't the apprioriate place to discuss people's mental health in this context

10:09 PM
yup

@Magisch Good point.

especially not when it overlaps with moderation-actionable other things. Leave that to the people who deal with that usually, please.

@Magisch Not when they cross boundaries and are being handled/corrected by room owners or CMs. If they're just talking... talk back like you would to any other user.

I should also add that I'm not buying your naïveté, you know very well what you're doing wrong

@Tinkeringbell yeah, that's what I meant
Basically just don't try to micromanage other people's mental health. If/when it causes a problem we'll all collectively deal with it appropriately, until then everyone is just a user

10:11 PM
Yeah. Except Magisch because he's a crazy cactus

@AndrasDeak are you implying there's something wrong with crazy cacti? I'll have you know my third uncle once removed is a crazy cactus and I take personal offense.

I daren't

ugh

@SomethingBadHappened Nope! That would just considered offensive or unkind.

10:18 PM
I'll be over there

Lets not get into that please

Still waiting for my film to be developed
I've taken quite a few pictures around town but they aren't ready yet

10:37 PM
📷 🐦

@KevinB Yeah, speaking of fast action photography, I might acquire some Kodak T-Max 3200 film

uh-oh. That got flagged

Flag handled... by QUIET RIOT

@Shog9 Yeah, I'm to blame.

10:39 PM
come on... Feel the noise...

@Shog9 You still have your old film camera, by any chance?

I haven't owned a film camera since... Wait, do those little disposable ones count?
I had one of those back in '00

@Shog9 Disposable cameras can produce some awesome images, though. My sister once took a field trip where they disallowed all electronic devices of any kind, so she took a couple of those to her trip and took quite a few pictures.

@Shog9 I have not seen those in eons

I still have a couple old film cameras and developing kit around somewhere

10:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek Our local convenience stores still sell them, though
@ArtOfCode Is that kit for black-and-white or color C-41?

Color, but I have no idea what process or chemicals it uses... or even how to do it any more, it's been years since I developed any
would have to look it up

@ArtOfCode You should load up some black-and-white film and go around and shoot photos, and have them developed. The experiment won't cost you much, and you might find yourself with a new hobby:

I have three ex-fruit crates upstairs that are literally full of developed photos... at last count, it was somewhere north of 10,000 photos

@ArtOfCode At most professional photo labs, you can ask for scans instead of prints. That's what the (UK-based) maker of the video above did

@Shog9 sneaky

10:52 PM
There's also a UK-based manufacturer of B&W film...Ilford

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog sure, but nothing beats going full analogue for resolution
If I get scans, I'll only see 'em at 1920x1080 max. If I get prints, infinite resolution... and then you get big prints of your favourites and frame 'em and hey presto, Christmas presents

@ArtOfCode Yeah, true. Even if you pay extra for 30+ MP scans you can't see all of the image at the same time.

@ArtOfCode infinite resolution^[citation needed] :P

@AndrasDeak okay, photon resolution, if you must :P

I'd be more concerned about the scale of the chemical reactions (and grain size of the reactant)

10:56 PM
okay, molecular scale? :P

since everyone is right on the internet I'll quote the first google hit I could find pic.templetons.com/brad/photo/pixels.html
> The very short answer is that there are around 20 million "quality" pixels in a top-quality 35mm shot. That's a shot with a tripod, mirror-up, with a top-rate lens and the finest-grained film, in decent light. 12 million are more typical for "good" shots. There may be as few as 4 million "quality" pixels in a handheld shot with a point-and-shoot camera or camera with a poor lens.

@ArtOfCode Analog black-and-white television (in 50 Hz countries) is 576 visible lines x phosphor, so by that standard it's higher resolution than HD

of course odds are you already know all this but I've got a professional inclination to set things like this right :P
(yes, I get paid to be a buzzkill)

In any case, my (ink cartridge subsidized) scanner can do 1200 DPI optical, so a 4x6 print produces a 34 MP image. So I'll have mine printed and scan them myself.

@AndrasDeak what's a quality pixel when it's out shopping

10:58 PM
sorry, too English for me
oooh I think I understand
should I be thinking yoga pants and flipflops?

Worth a read

I'll stick with my GoPro. Even if I bought it for video, it's pretty awesome at photos too.

tl;dr: film is a cheap way to get high-quality images if you're not willing to invest thousands of dollars in a 25+ MP DSLR with a full-frame 35mm sensor.

@ArtOfCode I give up :D

11:03 PM
Cell phone cameras are bad in low light because of their tiny image sensors, and even the budget DSLRs used 24mm-wide sensors and "mirrorless" designs.

@ArtOfCode oh, four words from your message, not mine...

aye

I don't know but quotes make everything better
anyway, good night
