Learning material advised on a SO blog post: does SO back this learning material?... I think some people have unreasonable expectations of the listicles put out by marketing department every 2-3 days or so.
[Link to SO Jobs] [Clickbaity title] [item 1] [item 2] [item 3] [Did we mention SO Jobs?] When filling up the three items in the middle is something you do every day, surely Google becomes your friend.

@Shog9, @JonEricson, et al., we have a situation in the Mathematics chat room again.
2 hours later…
4:17 AM
@bwDraco so...?
4:38 AM
self service ...
@Shog9 Sorry, was busy.
I'm wondering who's responsible for this flagging, because if it's the same person as last time, a suspension might be necessary.
Start here:
in Mathematics on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 3 hours ago, by bwDraco
Please cut it out with the flags.
Also, this might be a smoking gun:

@Jasper enjoy the rest of your night dude. I'm off to do some readings as I do not want to be banned tonight.
in Mathematics on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, Jun 5 at 5:09, by Shog9
@Avery @bwDraco well, I looked. Turns out @TheGreatDuck and @Dodsy have been trading flags here for a couple of days. Latest volley was courtesy of Dodsy, but TheGreatDuck still leads by a fair margin for raw numbers pointless flags.
See a pattern?
We just need confirmation that it's the same person.

Nice answer here @JourneymanGeek
7:24 AM
@rene done
@rene heh, crappy question. Didn't bother to read it, title is enough.
IMO better close those as rant and nuke out of orbit.
@ShaWizDowArd heh. Maybe. I suppose that a good chunk of my gold badges are for terrible posts so... It's addictive posting well though out answers to them. Also sloooooow Sunday
@rene thanks
7:40 AM
@rene -1 not enough troll
8:29 AM
@ShaWizDowArd also, I need moar answers for the discussion gold badge.
1 hour later…
9:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek nah most of those are deleted before the answer gets to +20, though Shog got tons of Reversal badges...
@JourneymanGeek so start posting! :D
@ShaWizDowArd 5 of my 6 are ;p
6 of my 7 gold badges are reversals
@JonEricson out of context (that is via star wall) it's really funny... so you saw "an adult male swimming"... like.. eh? :D
@ShaWizDowArd it was ;p
@JourneymanGeek was what where?
(I quite literally was refering to the line one line on top)
10:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek same here ... but discussion is harder to write posts for.
11:36 AM
@bwDraco yep, I can confirm that Dodsy has caused trouble in there multiple times before and I've had to call in the CMs/mods
How could this survive over an hour now?
aaaand kaboom
@user0042 because you're slacking in getting close vote privileges ...
@rene I'm flagging such stuff as much as I can :-P ...
It's a bit hard to gain rep at Meta SE, but OK I'll do my best.
@user0042 I CWed ;p
I didn't comment cause I'm kinda likely to have said something less than polite ._.
Too many lost sheep devs today
@user0042 heh, I'd agree but I've basically been plugging away at a specific class of questions (moderation) and that's helped a bit.
11:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek I suspect they're all question banned at Stack Overflow. Same thing as with Meta Stack Overflow.
@user0042 meta is simply the worst place to ask those questions ;p
@JourneymanGeek Of course
(if nothing else, all the mods work for SE)

4:07 PM
is it mandatory to sign up and register an account on SO (unlike other SE sites) before posting anything? and has that reduced spam?
Yes and yes. Though the main reason is not spam reduction, but low quality question reduction.
SO is not the only site on the network that requires registration though.
Other sites that require registration to ask: askubuntu, electronics, math, physics and software engineering.
4:28 PM
and yet how do spam pass through, I wonder (i am not a coder)
Because spammers register?
they automate that as well?
@NVZ Most spam comes from registered accounts. I imagine an assembly line sort of thing: one worker fills out Gmail registrations all day, another creates accounts using that email, the third posts spam.
you meant an assembly line sort of thing.
hmm. such dedication they have.
4:38 PM
"mechanical turk"
Completely automated spam tends to get blocked before being posted.
so it's fair to assume that 90 percent of spam that does get detected by charcoal team is human input?
i just, yesterday i think, joined charcoal, and have seen the most spams in a day in my 4 years here.
> 90% of the authors then go on to tweak their posts until something goes through, at which point they get deleted. It works ok for purely automated spam, not really at all for the human-generated spam that ends up being seen. meta.stackexchange.com/a/299161
and i'm told those are just the ones that pass thru initial shields.
(That quote is from the most recent discussion of spam blocking, there were many previous iterations.)
4:42 PM
When you go to Charcoal HQ to see spam on SE, it's like finding sand on a beach ;)
@Michelle yea, i imagined that. the site has been here for a decade at least.
spam on SO goes to SOCVR though
@Elias eh, isn't that just the close voters?
@NVZ Not really, SO launched 2008-07-31.
I guess it's a decade if you round up.
4:43 PM
@Michelle ah, now i can correct others who round up to 10 years. :P
Will there be a big celebration of 10 year anniversary? I suggest to celebrate it by merging the topbar with the footer in one thing, which will be position: fixed in the middle of page.
When the navigation becomes confusing enough that human spammers can't figure it out, the mission will be accomplished.
of course, new platinum badges for users who completed 10 successful years lurking on the network.
@NVZ SOCVR helps flagging spam on SO. On the other hand, spam on SO doesn't go here
(if my memory still serves right) Charcoal: SE+SO spam. Tavern: SE spam. SOCVR: SO spam
@Elias i don't think that's it.
why would such a separation be?
4:50 PM
Elias is right. The reason is that SOCVR has more than enough users to deal with spam, and that Tavern has purposes other than dealing with spam.
For the same reason, Tavern only gets spam reports if the post is not deleted in 5 minutes, which means most of reports are not seen here.
okay, makes sense.
This room is also for talking about everything else on the network. Like how the SO blog promotes an awful Python book, for example.
and, tavern has purposes, you say? :P
FWIW, Town Hall takes places on Tavern :p
4:53 PM
and is this where most of the magic happens? or is there another chat room i'm not invited to?
@Elias (btw, we're missing 13 september postscript on the answer there)
@Elias Yeah, except that Town Hall lacked a purpose of its own.
There are private rooms like mod room on SE chat, and a bunch of employee-only rooms on meta.SE chat.
@Elias I think those are added when the next one is announced, to have one bump instead of two.
5:08 PM
@SmokeDetector not sure about this
5:34 PM
Looks legitimate to me
6:09 PM
@Michelle looks can be deceiving.. but i agree with you on this one.

@YvetteColomb but that wasn't the account that posted the potential spam shown above.
how did you verify its the same user?
@NVZ when looking at spam, when you're unsure, it's a good idea to look at the user account. If they've been around and active on the network for some time - benefit of the doubt. It's the users who have account - rep 1 and no other posts throughout the network (unless they're spamming the same thing) that it's safer to assume it's spam.
@NVZ it's on their account - on the left or...
@NVZ holy cr@p, you're IPS rep has soared

Now tell me what the letters mean?
we cannot have this discussion in the Awkward Silence as it's just not a good example of IPS
IPS question would be, "How can I make people not ask me what the letters in my name mean?" [awkward-situations] [conflict-aversion] [mind-control]
@Shog9 oh shog, you pop up everywhere. BAZINGA!
but mostly just here

@YvetteColomb the letters? these aren't letters. In my planet, they mean Hope.

Refiner #1599 on SO is mine... would be my rarest silver badge (hence on top in the profile page) but there is meaningless Knowledgeable badge in the way. :/
Hopefully when the new Docs badge is given it won't be as rare (or, I won't qualify for it which is even better).

Q: What words are offensive in titles? What are the rules?

I wouldn't describe someone's refusal to publish the stuff I sent them as censorship.
Is there a good online IQ testing service out there?
@Michelle these are not my words, I only quoted how SE team describes what they do. I also think that saying "sites sending the stuff to them to publish to HNQ" gets things rather backwards. Many sites protest against the way how their questions get indiscriminately spammed to entertain Stack Overflow passers by
