Should I go and see the burning man? I'll be close by, have a car and nothing to do for a couple of days. On the other hand, I am not particularly fond of rock or desert heat at the end of August.

Then, no
But in any other situation, also no

user202362
alternative is spending more time doing road trip from LA to SF .. or spend more time in SF

@Telkitty go up coast highway, well worth the time
One of the most beautiful places in the country
Shit... I've never had as much time as I've wanted on coast highway, no matter how much time I set aside for it.

user202362
doing it over 3-5 days

Drive four hours, find a campground, buy some wine at a gas station, call it a night. Next day, repeat.

would be nice to have a shower at some point - personal grooming is necessary after 3 nights rolling in the dirt

@Telkitty rain shower or meteor shower?

user202362
would be nice to have both

@Oded why am I allowed to change my name within 30 days in the same site.

@i-- you aren't. If you change your name on SO, then try to change it again on SO, you will be told you must wait. If you don't see that, it is indeed a bug.

your goal?

LEI
Hiding comments ? $('.answer > table > tbody > tr:last-child').hide();

1:51 PM
Space optimisation. Squish everything together, hide comments. Just squishing everything together without hiding comments might be a decent suggestion, but that doesn't really achieve the goal. The whole point is to get the answers nice a close together so you can see more answers on one page.

user315433
The Workplace has a setting like this... or used to, looks like they are back to normal.

That might increase the chance of having better answers float to the top, because answers with a lower position are given more visibility.

LEI
Works well for short ones, but some answers already take the whole height :P

user315433
What would be the default: comments hidden / comments shown? And what is the toggle between them?

user202362
have a user setting for how many comments or how long of an answer a user sees?

1:55 PM
Default hidden, the toggle is next to "flag" (my screenshot could be improved by showing the number of comments there too).

user315433
Hiding a comment that points out a serious flaw in an answer (security vulnerability, etc) may be a poor service to visitors.

user202362
not all answers are relevant

@Michelle Exactly. I don't really know how to get around that. We should probably instead focus on getting users to use comments how they were intended to be used, then we won't need to hide them.

user315433
Maybe hide all un-upvoted comments by default.

@Michelle that's hardly an improvement over the current practice -- if you want to follow a discussion you would like as little as possible, not as much as possible to be hidden
the real usability killer is that you only realize when you have read through all the unhidden comments that you are not seeing all of them, and then when you unhide it's tricky to know which ones you have already read

2:06 PM
@tripleee "discussion" - that's the problem right there... That's not what comments are meant for.

(we learn to watch out, but this is a killer when you have not yet learned)
@Dukeling no contest there, but making it worse is not the way to fix that
hiding all the comments when there are more than some threshold might actually be less frustrating as well as more pleasing to the eye
mock-up: 123 comments (44 upvoted, highest upvote count 87), click here to show

@tripleee good luck with selecting the bounty winner ...

@rene an improvement over a previous answer is tricky, do I want to reward the original effort (which I know is significant) or the improvement effort (which we speculate is smaller, but perhaps also more insightful)...? Yeah, thanks, I'm gonna need it

Since when is > ! also a valid spoiler: anime.stackexchange.com/revisions/…?
Or is > don't care how many whitespace chars here ! also valid spoiler markdown

2:25 PM
@rene dunno, but I believe that's the disadvantage of using markdown, because of that inconsistency unclear rule
and most whitespace is usually trimmed on the markdown, right?

@Elias I blame a regex in the SE software

user315433
MarkdownSharp is on GitHub, but it's not clear if balpha would merge PRs into SE codebase.

user315433
Or if the repo is even current.

i--
@Michelle the comments are longer than code

user315433

@Michelle I don't see the spoiler or hidden markdown in that code. Am I looking for the wrong things?

user315433
3:12 PM
@rene I guess it's added in "post-production". Markdownsharp will produce <blockquote>\n ! text\n</blockquote> and something else appends a class to blockquotes that begin with !

user315433
Either that, or SE uses a different branch from what we see on GitHub.

Anonymous
@Michelle Yup. PostHtmlProcessor.Plugins.Spoiler. Not in MarkdownSharp.

That was my guess ... :)

3:45 PM
In comes @rene and sweeps the bounty from me :D
You remind me how much about TSQL I still have to learn
I barely have a clue what this spoil you're using does
@rene I was using the posts table because I had no clue how to reliably delineate start/end of spoilers in markdown
Since under some circumstances you can use a line break without ending the spoiler (sometimes you need 2)

4:07 PM
@Magisch yeah, I'm looking into some edge cases now.

@rene Where did you learn tsql

@Magisch I didn't formally have training on that but both my study and early work experience forced me in using a lot of sql. So I have seen Oracle, Sybase, MSSQL, MySql, DB2 even (don't ask). But MSSQL has been my dominant RDBMS for over 10 years or so. It is not the T-SQL knowledge that helps me here.

Looks like a case of same user, same question, over two accounts here: old, new
Please note how same PhotosActivity class is there
also, issue is same
should I just flag as duplicate or go for moderator attention?

@DroidDev Not to mention this question with same username but different account

4:56 PM
just noticed, those are actually two accounts with same name: 1, 2
and counting the one that posted that "new" question above, that's third account
definitely going for moderator attention, thanks for pointing third account as well @Elias

@DroidDev sure. I googled a part of their code, "gridView = (GridView)findViewById(R.id.gv_folder);" and found the other questions and a site. Perhaps they're following the tutorial from that site and then having some issues. That's why the code is similar.

@Elias yeah, having issues part is totally understandable, but creating three accounts over issues, and using them to upvote each other (that's how I think they got upvotes if any on those questions), is just a waste. Mod flagging all three
also, found another account with funny name, coming right up at it after flagging these
this username is a hindi word, which translates to "behind" (to be politically correct)
is that allowed?

5:14 PM
@DroidDev you sure you pointed to the correct user? That looks like Greek to me
or, does "gaand" mean "behind" in Hindi?

@Elias yes, because the last word in his avatar (chu) is a half word, which is also a hindi word, and full word for that is "chutiya", which translates to "pussy" (don't know how to be politically correct here)
@Elias exactly
but he's fairly high rep user, don't know how nobody noticed it yet :/
one meaning can be found here if you can believe quora, but because its just a swear word, can't really believe dictionaries will do that

or perhaps, "nobody cares" because only those who understand, understand the meaning. Us, non-Hindi speakers won't have any idea about that...
Let's say the avatar says "don't be a chupacabra" instead to me :)

haha, that also is true, but a new hindi speaking user can definitely get different ideas from that. But, that's not doing any harm, if its not against site policies

@canon We just refer to that as "The Incident"
