Holy crap
I just set up nginx as a proxy
And it took like 30 seconds without knowing what I was doing and totally worked
I'm suspicious.

let me hit it with my IP Web cam network...

It's been a few years since I used nginx, but I remember it being very easy to set up

meta.Hinduism.SE suddenly became unknown in SE Android App!:

@Pandya probably related to the HTTPS switch
can you see if other child metas are broken?

@rene I think you'd crash my router before you'd break my Pentium II web server, lol.

4:24 PM
@Stijn I've just tried to add AU meta through "Edit" button for Your Sites. And now it is also showing meta.Hinduism.SE fine!

@Pandya blame caching ...

^that :)

@rene Hmm...

The switch is going really smooth
I had a brief ugly 404 error on MSO this afternoon, but no other issues

@Pandya the /sites is up to date but the apps might have stored the previous version. When you tried to edit the site the app updated its local copy of sites.

4:28 PM
Ok

user315433
So much userscript breakage. :/

@rene Btw, when are you going to be appointed as developer by SE! Haha

Trust me, it is better for everyone if that doesn't happen soon ;)

@Stijn undefined behavior questions for C++ are the same (or worse)

4:33 PM
@NormalHuman did that really happen?

user315433
Asking the wrong person...

user315433
Fixing a bunch of lines like metahost = 'meta.'+host; in my scripts...

user315433
What's a neat correct replacement for it?

user315433
I.e., given the hostname of main site, determine it for the child meta.

@NormalHuman can't you query /sites for that?

user315433
4:39 PM
I don't want to use API just for this small thing. Also, it's a regex exercise.

good luck with that ;)

user315433
str.replace(/(\w+\.\w+$)/, 'meta.$1') seems to work

Holy crap this is awesome: opendata.cityofnewyork.us/data
NYC you definitely get some points for this one.

@JasonC I found that yesterday and am using their tree census data for something

It's so cool.
It looks like they started it relatively recently, mid 2015.

data.cityofnewyork.us/Social-Services/crime/bmip-k9hh every 311 crime complaint from 2010 to now. Wow, lol.

Does a registrar that also provides managed, dynamic DNS, and a sane control panel not exist?
Every single DNS service I remember being great has now fallen into this weirdly common pattern of having an "old" site, a "new" site, and a weird blend between the two, and utterly confusing service offerings. And non responsive control panels. And nothing makes any sense. I'm looking at you ZoneEdit and NoIP.
Why? Why is it like this? How is it possible that domain management was easier in 1999 than it is in 2017?
I mean look at this. This was ZoneEdit's UI 20 years ago:
Crappy default font but flawless.
All info at a glance, clear, one click per action, no problem.
Really, GoDaddy? Seriously?

Anonymous
Namecheap seems to have shoved a buggy AJAX UI on top of their previously-reliable simple HTML UI a few years ago, to try to be more modern. The user experience immediately became so much worse.

You've been doing this for 20 years and you have timestamp bugs on your control panel?

Anonymous
Nobody wants to redesign any guts, they just hack together front-end changes in the crappiest ways.

It's a freakin' nightmare.
Yeah Namecheap pisses me off, too.
They all piss me off.

Anonymous
These days I use Google Domains + Cloudflare for domains and DNS, which seem sane enough, but they don't have dynamic DNS IIRC.

6:33 PM
Everything pisses me off. I can't wait until the sun explodes.
NoIP's customer service just had me on hold for 15 minutes with music, and then it went to voicemail. Who does that?
Jesus christ.

6:59 PM
Did I come in at a bad time?
This is the Anger Management class, right?
I heard there was free beer and pizza.

7:20 PM
Only during happy hour, if you bring your own ...

Awesome, I love providing the beer and pizza

Did Stack Overflow trust "Screenleap"? Hmmm... that's not the SO logo, I don't think it ever had a line break between Stack and Overflow.

user315433
Never heard of it personally. And they're using our old logo... badly. Yeehaw. — Adam Lear ♦ 21 secs ago

I'll be back from vacation on March 27th ... I hope the hackers take a break as well then ...

@rene We do have other devs and SREs ;)

user315433
SU may have lost a bit of Google juice... quantcast.com/superuser.com?country=GLOBAL#/trafficCard

7:51 PM
Considering the type of stuff Google serves, may be best to avoid the juice anyway

user315433
Inconclusive anyway, could be a major holiday in India or spring break season in the States, etc.

It seems to average at 14 in two prior ranges, then 16 in the prior range, and then 14 again. Not sure that is indicative of a drop in traffic

user315433
If so, I have a vacuum cleaner that Nick may be interested in...

Is it connected to HAProxy?

7:55 PM
Does it suck?

user315433
No, that's the problem. :( I'll blame it on Russian hackers.

That will do

user315433
Briefly considered disabling HTTPS Everywhere, but ignoring child meta sites is perhaps a better solution.

@rene It sucks big time

good

1 hour later…
9:20 PM
Is there a simple sede query to determine if a question is currently closed? I remember this being complicated.

@JasonC ClosedDate is not null
on Post

does ClosedDate become null again when it's reopened?

yes

Ok cool, thanks. I wonder what query I was thinking of.

Probably something that determined whether the question was ever closed or what close reason was used

Q: What's the story with this user?

Mark HendersonI refer you to Hans Moleman's exceptionally exciting life: Jan 17: Gets fired by an intoxicated boss, but just went back to work anyway to find out he has a new manager Jan 26: Wasted a lot of time at work making an inappropriate video about themselves as a "joke" for their new manag...

Random stats. Among the sites with 100-1000 questions per day, Super User has the highest traffic (721K visits/day) and Stack Overflow на русском has the lowest (53K).

user315433
Among SE sites with 10-100 questions per day, English Language & Usage has the highest traffic (449K) and Emacs the lowest (3K)

user315433
Among SE sites with 1-10 questions per day, Seasoned Advice has the highest traffic (104K) and Vegetarianism the lowest (68... not 68K)

user315433
Among SE sites with <1 questions per day, Portuguese Language has the highest traffic (3603) and Community Building the lowest (29).

Vegetarianism needs more Soy!

it seems the community building SE doesn't have a very avid community

11:08 PM
Was that site always called Community Building? Didn't it used to be called Moderation or something? Or am I thinking of something else?

user315433
Nick mentioned blog.gaming.stackexchange.com which is... weird. An old site blog, but not on Blog Overflow domain.

user315433
Ah, it predates Blog Overflow, as does blog.superuser.com

Once upon a time, we created those domains (also chat.<site domain> domains) for each new site. That died quickly.

user315433
<site>/chat or <site>/blog might have been more sustainable, or not?

user315433
Or it's all about cookies tied to domains.

11:16 PM
yeah, that would've been a problem for Wordpress. Chat was always a redirect anyway.

user315433
@CRABOLO reached 10K on Meta earlier this month, congratulations! <Yeah, I know...>

11:29 PM
@NormalHuman you know what happened to him? Where he is these days?

Accruing rep on the REAL community building site, obviously

@NormalHuman \o/
@JasonC this guy puts the guy on travel with a gold brick, bullet proof vest and deactivated bazooka to shame

@JourneymanGeek Lol

11:40 PM
@JourneymanGeek what about this user?

@ShadowWizard We're having fun reconstructing users' life stories from their posts.

@ShadowWizard apparently he buys a ticket for his gold brick, and flies wearing a bulletproof vest with a used bazooka

oh. lol

Odd/silly/unusual questions tend to start a certain type of "wtf" comment conversation that I can't describe. It'd be interesting to see if there was some sort of nlp-style analysis on comments you could do to identify questions like that, then you can pull them per user and make interesting pictures of their lives.

Wonder what you'll make from my posts across the sites........ :D

11:43 PM
Like you can look at all of a users' questions now but it's a lot of work to filter out tons of mundane questions.
The comments seem to be the biggest thing that's unique to the interesting ones.
Conversations like the one we're having now make me both relieved and disappointed that we don't have a sex and relationships site.

@JasonC we had such a site
for like 2 weeks

We'd have to anonymize all the posts, lol.
Ha, really? I'm surprised it lasted that long.

@JasonC yeah, only private beta. Didn't have enough active users.
I was one of them, lol

Lol
I can't see a site like that working without being completely disconnected from the rest of the network.

I don't entirely grok the non 'tech' sites
Well not really technology

11:47 PM
Quite a few users posted stuff, then suddenly panicked, realising their profile is linked.

It'd be strangely easy to trace somebody from their careers profile to their relationship screwups.
Yeah lol
@JourneymanGeek You mean the fuzzier ones like vegetarianism and stuff?

Something like cooking makes more sense to me more than worldbuilding or S&M Sex and Relationships

I dunno. Everybody wants their own cute little community.

Well, I didn't hide anything, nothing to be ashamed of, IMO.

Worldbuilding is surprisingly awesome though. I think so anyways.

11:48 PM
@JasonC eh. I'm veggie and I've not looked at the site

Though I mostly answered.

@JasonC it is, but it feels a bit oddball

Yeah, it is kind of strange.
PPCG is a weird one to me.
And Puzzling.

Always think they're the same.

And all the virtual currency ones.

11:49 PM
Puzzling is puzzling
PPCG could have a best answer

Housework

Proposed Q&A site for solving those everyday household tasks that come with domestic living and upkeep.

Currently in commitment.

Oh god.

the virtual currency ones feels like the bristol football clubs of sites
They should have one mediocre one instead of two ten terrible ones.

@JasonC lifehacks, but without the hacks. A place to feel safe answering "use a sponge" when someone asks how to clean tile.

@Shog9 Heh
Funny I just made a post to that effect there.
There's a specific proposal I'm looking for here, let's see...
Lol Interpersonal Skills. If the horrors of Workplace and Academia weren't enough.

I was kinda bummed that "etiquette" didn't go anywhere

11:57 PM
I thought I followed Etiquette but I guess not.
Oh yeah

Proposed Q&A site for phenomenon believers in: Psionics:Psychokinesis/Telekinesis; ESP:Astral/Lucid/RV/NDE/OBE; Energy:Meditation/Consciousness; Magic:Occult/Healing/Reiki/Crystals/Runes/Rituals/Exorcism); ET:Aliens/UFO; Metaphysical entities: Spirits; Astrology, etc.

Closed before being launched.

@JasonC there've been... maybe 8 previous proposals, so you probably did.

That would've been disastrously awesome.
There's another attempt

Paranormal

Proposed Q&A site for phenomenon believers in: Psionics:Psychokinesis/Telekinesis; ESP:Astral/Lucid/RV/NDE/OBE; Energy:Meditation/Consciousness; Magic:Occult/Witchcraft/Reiki/Crystals/Runes/Rituals/Exorcism); ET:Aliens/UFO; Metaphysical entities: Spirits; Astrology, etc.

Currently in definition.

@JasonC funny thing is I know enough of that sorta people to troll run into people I might know in such a site.
close as dupe? ;p

Me too.

The common problem on TWP (and even more so, the defunct "relationships" site) is "I don't want to talk to someone to resolve something that can only be resolved by talking to them"
The interesting problems on TWP are the ones where there's some protocol you're expected to follow in how you communicate... and you don't know what it is.
That's where an Etiquette site would really come into its own
