This isn't fair, SE chats used to sit in the background, now I am lagging on other devices, the chats have my full attention

Q: Feeds fails to feed a chatroom regularly

zaqThe chatroom Log of Meta Posts is receiving the feed https://stackexchange.com/feeds/tagsets/249208/all-metas?sort=newest (based on a filter). But the flow of posts is highly irregular. They stopped for 15 hours, resumed, stopped for 2 hours, then one post appeared for 2nd time (?) and currentl...

A: We're Enabling Display Ads on Select Stack Exchange Sites

PolyGeoI've just started see the occasional ad on the GIS Stack Exchange and as you can see at lower right in the image below they are relatively unobtrusive and something that I am very happy to see in exchange for the availability of our site.

user315433
Hmm, e-commerce on Azure... Nothing wrong in it, but I would refrain from saying that it's "ludicrously on-topic" on GIS site.

The first thing that is important to note is our client base consists entirely of companies that want to reach or hire programmers. Boring! Why not diversify a bit. One day, companies will stop shelling out crazy money to find programmers. — Pëkka 14 hours ago
SE ads are good, I would be fine with them expanding.

user315433
The customer base is what it is. Those 9 people in Ad Sales won't magically acquire contacts and knowledge in other areas.

user202362
Not surprised .. Such is life, deal with it

user315433

I'd be curious to see who would want to place ads on ELU for example (is it the highest traffic non-ad site? Seems so).

user315433
1:39 AM
After 10 hours of inaction, Feeds threw 30 posts at once (and 30 is how many the filter's Atom feed contains, so it's likely some were missed). Maybe that extra load that Nick tweeted about is pushing out the scheduled task "check feeds for new posts"?

user315433
An ad on Cross Validated was selling Microsoft HoloLens, developer edition. Ludicrously on-topic?

@zaq Dutch companies, I suppose.

Also agent sent thru a contract because neighbours want to group selling the land to real estate developers. The chance of that successfully happening in the next 5 years is about 50% IMHO. But if it does go through, the price of the land will double and my lot would not be less than 3 million (or I wouldn't sell and my neighbours would not accept any amount less than that for their lots either).

Still figuring out how Feeds decides whether to post a blog-like message or the onebox of a post. Either can happen when the associated URL is of some SE post.

8:26 AM
Huh, I was just paging through some of the bookmarked conversations in the room on a total whim, and I stumbled upon this fascinating one:

No time to read, delete everything

May 28 at 2:03, 48 minutes total – 196 messages, 5 users, 3 stars

Bookmarked Jun 1 at 14:45 by zaq

I’m a little sad to have missed it during my long absence from this room. It’s one of the franker conversations I’ve seen about some of this stuff.
It makes me wonder even more what SO is thinking about throwing at the wall, and if they have the bandwidth to do it.
There’s also this line:
May 28 at 2:39, by Shog9
When SO launched, it was "let folks answer programming questions in an environment that's less shitty than Experts Exchange"
If SO is “less shitty Experts Exchange”, and Jobs is “less shitty LinkedIn”, what does that make Documentation?

@AlexisKing less shitty MSDN?
@zaq I still suspect it's a race condition between building of the blog and Feeds posting it, i.e. in the instant Feeds post it, it's not yet fully baked.

I guess so, yeah. Though I sort of wonder specifically which “shittiness factors” MSDN has that Docs is trying to solve, and how it intends to solve it.

@zaq Thanks, although I'm not sure if they included me in the research ...

@AlexisKing from the little I used MSDN, it's just too big and too hard to find stuff. Guess SO is doing better job at searching.
@Telkitty what were you talking about??

@ShadowWizard Hmm. Does Docs really have much in the way of searching? Last I checked, organization/discoverability was one of its biggest flaws.

8:34 AM
@bart finale delete vote needed here (assuming Sha already casted his)

I probably ought to get at least a little more rep on the Overmeta. ;–;

@AlexisKing oh. I actually not use Docs, just assumed they put decent search mechanism for that. Well... guess others who are more familiar with Docs can give better answers. :)
@AlexisKing you mean 2k so you can edit stuff? :)

@ShadowWizard I don’t claim to be all that familiar with it, either; I just remember trying it out and feeling very underwhelmed. :/ Maybe it’s changed significantly since then, though, so I’d be interesting in talking to some actual Docs users. :)

@rene done

8:40 AM
@ShadowWizard I meant 10k, actually, but I guess “a little” is probably not the best term for that, haha.

@AlexisKing lol, true... and 8.5k aren't easy to get, even on MSE... well, at least not quickly. ;)

Everywhere is easier then on SO

Not if all SEDE questions are all answered by now

On SO I bitterly ground out my 5,3k but on TWP I got to 9,1k without trying at all and on MSE I got to 2,6k just from occasional posts

@Magisch Isn’t SO by far the easiest just from sheer volume? When I wanted to get serious about getting to 10k on SO, I just watched a few popular tags like and lowered my standards.
Since then, I’ve almost completely retreated into tags nobody cares about, and I still managed to hit 20k just from grabbing the questions I actually care enough to answer.

8:45 AM
@AlexisKing See but I'm an apprentice and I'm not active in very popular tags
C and VBA mostly
And I've been on here for a year and some and only really active for 8 months of that

@AlexisKing ... lowered my standards ...
:(

@rene It's the game you have to play

sure, and I realize it is easy for me to say, given my rep

Some people are playing it very well, hence you see the 150k users who still have no clue what they're doing

@Magisch now, try SharePoint....
(hissing noises)

8:50 AM
@rene These days, most easy and straightforward questions are multi-dupes
So you make a choice

@Derpy The question there would be: do I kill myself before I get to any serious rep.

Either ignore that and answer them anyways, or do the right thing (tm) and close them, but aint nobody got reputation from closing, and reputation is geared to be the singular incentive focus on the site, so...

@Magisch I’d consider both those tags decently popular, but I do hear you. Keep in mind, though, that I mostly follow and these days, which have a grand total of 6.5k questions between them. has 235k. ;)

2:5449951 there is no "serious rep" on SharePoint

And the old folks, those who are comfortably sitting on lots of rep now, they more often then not got their points precisely from answering easy questions that were not yet dupes back then

8:52 AM
@rene I’ve seriously tried to avoid gaming the system as much as possible, but I really wanted to be able to see deleted posts after a while. :/

@Magisch Jon Skeet?

Jon Skeet most definitely knows what he's doing :p

@AlexisKing 10k is enough, why didn't you stop there then? ;)

@ShadowWizard I did! As mentioned above, I retreated to my little corner that nobody actually pays any attention to after I hit 10k. I have given it much love.

@AlexisKing yeah, I'm not claiming I don't do that. You can tell from the score in my popular tag: lots of answers, not enough rep for a gold badge ...
Ok, maybe I'm simply not good enough

8:56 AM
@AlexisKing huh, nice!

@Magisch It does seem likely that rep is harder to get than it was at the very beginning, but I’ve been a member of SO since 2010, and honestly, I think it was already just as hard to get rep back then.

It's not harder
It's just ... less helpful

Sure, that’s perhaps a better characterization, yes. :)

when you see people get +1000 votes on one liner answers it's very hard to give reputation much credence
Hell, my top answer is easily one of my shortest ones.

@rene I think getting gold badges is honestly just hard. I’m the 7th top answerer in the tag, and I’m only just under 50% of the way to a gold badge.
@ShadowWizard I’ve been feeling like I ought to award a lot more bounties now that I have hit 20k, but the gamification is too good, and there’s something terribly tantalizing about watching that number tick up. :s

9:08 AM
@AlexisKing can't deny it... with 40k+ I can safely allow myself to give bounties to answers I actually use myself. :)
(if the user is low rep enough otherwise it's quite pointless :))

@AlexisKing yeah, but on a niche tag I expect it is easier to get upvotes? It is harder to get the answer count needed due to the low traffic>

I never actually recieved a bounty
Usually I'm not good enough to outperform other answers on bountied questions

I think I got a couple
but I have the same issue on out performing competition

In the there is a ridiculous amount of people with like 20 years of programming experience in that language
I started fiddling with it october last year

@rene Yeah, I think it’s easier in some ways and harder in others. Getting upvotes isn’t necessarily easier on niche tags, either, since there are fewer eyeballs overall.
It is more likely that you’ll get those upvotes spread out over time, though, whereas the upvotes you get in the first 5 minutes of answering a question in a popular tag are likely to be all the upvotes you’ll ever get.

9:17 AM
Is this maybe spam: meta.stackexchange.com/a/287310/158100 ? because of the last link

@Magisch The advantage to following those sorts of tags is that you learn a lot. :)

@AlexisKing Indeed
I started answering on SO on quite a selfish venture
The easiest way to learn quickly and thoroughly is facing the scrutiny of some of the best :)

@Telkitty It is not Macbook, those aren't names, they are adjectives. Don't want the chat to be banned by Apple, right?
you should say "a Macbook notebook"
(yep, true story)

user202362
Chat banned by Apple ... You have good imagination ...

10:42 AM
jokes aside, while I would say that I don't really expect many viruses to make their way to the mac, the fact that the tablet works is strange.
but... are we sure that you are using the same network?
because if you are using 4g on the tablet and a wired adsl on the others....

@Bart yes, that is true, but questions about the techniques/architecture used by SO are on-topic, aren't they?

@Derpy by all means, do it! :-)
@rene better fit on MSE, as it's the same on all sites.

Q: Which tools and technologies are used to build the Stack Exchange Network?

aleembWhat tools and technologies are used to build the Stack Exchange Network? See also: Which tools and technologies are used to build Data Explorer? Return to FAQ index

though it doesn't mention tags ^

yeah, it is a specific question asking about an implementation detail

now, since you are here. @JNat. @Telkitty was telling us before that two of her devices are experiencing slow load times on Stack Exchange while a third one seem to work nicely...
Have you folks by chance forgot to shadow ban the third device too :P?

11:27 AM
what do you mean?

@JNat haha, you should get used to @Derpy's humor... :D

My first thought was that it was humor, indeed. But then I wondered if we were actually talking about something I was unaware of
It happens sometimes
Me not knowing something, I mean ;)

Telkitty slow load problems

24 hours ago, 14 minutes total – 18 messages, 5 users, 0 stars

Bookmarked 12 secs ago by Derpy

here is the reference
as you can see, this users seems to have slow load problems.

@JNat if it's about troll/spammer, you have a backup to remind you..... ;)

11:30 AM
@ShadowWizard you mean the power to block or hobble IP addresses?

@JNat combo of IP and specific device, or maybe even block a single specfic device based on who using it. :)
And not block, just make SE load slower on it.

She also mentioned that TOR seems to load the page faster than Chrome so we joked on stack having applied a shadow ban on her devices.
After all, she is the one that call herself "the troll princess"

Well, I'm not aware of anything

well, it is not like we really believed in the shadow ban. But the "TOR loads faster parts seems strange"

11:33 AM
Oh my.... my country is on fire. :(

unless that is just because tor includes adblock/noscript features and those could help with a very slow connection

@Derpy In the distant past, this very chat caused my Chrome browser to crash. Always. It worked on IE, but being IE, it wasn't useable, just didn't crash the browser. It caused me to not join chat for long time, and when I checked again one day... all was good. I did not install or remove anything special. Browsers have their weird sides, guess nobody can know.

@ShadowWizard I can tell you that Stack Exchange has very odd behaviors when one of your cookies expired but you have disabled cookies in the browser.

@Derpy same if you change local time to the future.... think I saw someone reporting a bug that he can't login, and balpha said it's because of his local time

even if you have defined exceptions for .stackexchange.com etc ones , sometime the browser can't refresh them correctly unless you don't enable cookies

11:40 AM
If you play trick on the system, the system might play tricks back on you. :)

in that case, you are stuck in a "living dead" zombie state.
you are logged in, all page works but input field disappear.
this is very odd in some cases....

@Derpy heh, true

for example, the search field goes missing
and that I never understood why since even anonymous users have it.

12:09 PM
@rene sorry got a bit busy, didn't have a chance yet to reply to you. Yeah, it's probably an incorrect duplicate, but is it worth reopening to only have it closed again as "unclear"?
I doubt we'll have an interesting answer to share even after clarification, I assume the answer will be what you said in your last comment: a (jQuery) AJAX call.

12:26 PM
@Stijn yeah, that is my idea as well. I can't make much more of it and I doubt any of the devs find it exciting enough to brag give juicy details about the implementation.

12:50 PM
@Derpy Dear Derpy, you already know they don't realize that, right?

So, sometimes it works. Kind of. :)

@M.A.R. this is one example where I agree with @Telkitty about the "inefficiencies" she discussed yesterday.
they think that ads are going to bring them my money.
they don't realize that most of the times they are feeding my black lists of "people not to buy from"

I had a look at Jeff Atwood's answer here: Is spam in the “about me” field a reason to worry? But I still want to check: If I see a user with "spam link" in their profile, I should flag, right?

@Martin I have recently established that not even watermarks on pictures in posts are worth flagging. I doubt anyone would act on a company link in a profile.

Not a company link.
I meant something like the links typically detected by SD (supplements, skin products, etc.)

1:03 PM
@ShadowWizard Ayy
:D

I mean, I didn't manage to make them act on offensive pictures in profiles (yep, that may be me, but I still believe that image is sexist) so I don't have much hopes for a spam link to be removed

For example, this user has such links in their profile on drupal and on apple.
@Derpy I see. So you're saying the flag will probably remain pending or declined, so it's probably not worth flagging.

@Martin well, in theory someone who works for skin care company can be valid user. We can't punish a person only because the company they work for send other people to spam.

@Martin exactly

1:05 PM
Ok, so I'll probably let it be, then. Thanks for the advice!

On the other hand, user who already spammed is a different matter, and better be nuked out of orbit.

Oh, you probably should ask someone more optimistic than me.

@ShadowWizard In the specific case I linked above, SD detected one spam post from that user. So it's a bit different.

No new MSO questions for 4 hours and I ran out of tickets to work on... what to do now :(

@Derpy Heh, at least you're not on minecraftforum

1:06 PM
Although, metasmoke only shows one post with that username.

@Martin yup. You can flag, link to the now deleted spam and ask to delete the account.

@Derpy Where we had to give 2(!) confirmed instances of people spamming CP to get an account outright deleted.

@Stijn MSE

................................................................................‌....................................................

@ShadowWizard I barely visit MSE ever since the split happened to be honest, a lot of activity there still?

1:07 PM
Are those dots, @Derpy?
@Stijn not lots, but the little we have can be interesting. :)

because somehow someone thought someone spamming CP once wasn't enough to nuke them from low orbit

@ShadowWizard read Magicsh post above, I think you may want to avoid any comment too.

I didn't fully type that out for a reason

@Derpy not sure I get it... what's so horrible in confirmed spam causing auto account deletion?

One of the reasons I stopped moderating there

1:13 PM
I assume law enforcement had to be involved, @Magisch? Nasty thing to have to deal with :\

@Stijn I always passed these off to the site owner
I was never summoned to testify anywhere, although LE asked me per email once to make a statement (also via email) regarding one case
It happened ... more often then you would think, which is especially sick considering that this was a site frequented mostly by children

Rather surprising, considering the possible consequences from doing such things
You'd think people are smarter than that

Wait... CP.... oh. I didn't give much attention to those.

Protocol for moderators in these cases was immediately suspend the account, delete the post, validate the report, and pass everything off to the site owner so he could report it to law enforcement
Somehow one instance of that didn't result in account termination though. They'd be suspended, for like 6 months or so for it

I never really thought there's any CP in the "main" internet, but rather that it's buried deep in the Deep Web, and only there. Oh well...

1:19 PM
@Stijn There was a significant amount of edgelords who thought it was cool to hide links to disturbing stuff like gore, snuff, cp etc in innocous places to traumatize children.
I always took solace in the fact that they'll be debating whether or not it was worth it from the inside of a prison for at least a couple years
What a depressing subject. Lets talk about waffles

@Stijn what's stopping you? ;)
@Derpy if anyone should know, it's you... ;)

1:29 PM
@ShadowWizard I'm at work with none of the ingredients or tools to make pancakes/waffles :p

1. Get out of the building.
2. Head for the nearest pancakes/waffles shop. (likely shopping mall?)
3. Buy pancake or waffle.
4. Om nom nom.

Nearest shopping mall is probably half an hour away

I know that they were considering the idea to give out something related to the bash this years but it is still a "maybe"

@Derpy Ah cool, might participate then. My two previous attempts at getting swag failed, it never arrived by post. Still swag-less after all these years

@Stijn there is a leaderboard, the one with most hats wins and gets his/her name mentioned by SE staff in the blog post concluding the event.
