My official goodbye to outdoors. It's been good here, but it's time to move on to other things. Peace.

I generally prefer indoors, especially this time of the year. But there is no SE site about that.

No "if only I could do" ideas?

user202362
plenty of things I could do

user202362
8:43 AM
for example I am writing a blog on how today's society is running in a very inefficient manner

user202362
for example, what if you suddenly realize that only 40% of the work people do contribute to the useful aspect of civilization, and the rest 60% are like digging up a hole then fill it up?

Depends somewhat on how you define useful though.

@Telkitty What if you instead notice how all those "inefficiencies" are actually aimed at creating a sensorial lobotomy that will allow a few chosen one to feed on the unhappiness and sacrifice of the most?

user202362
sure, the concept of 'useful' depends on the aim of humanity

user202362
so what are the goals of humanity?

user202362
9:00 AM
Also the electrician doesn't seem to know what he's doing ... he has spent more than a week, then came back with "err, but the plan we have discussed, I don't think we can do it that way"

@Telkitty Humanity isn't even capable of defining the nature of "morality" in the first place, do you really hope it can find a goal?

user202362
but the goal of any living creature ... is to survive

user202362
then propagate as a specie

@Telkitty yes, but that is the goal of each single creature BY ITSELF.
and mankind is very good at that.

user202362
so were dinosaurs

9:03 AM
not my point

user202362
look how great they are doing now

user202362
but that is my point

what I was saying is that that goal is the goal of each creature taken by itself, but yet isn't the goal of humanity as a whole.
Basically, if I am country A and you are country B and you have oil, for country A is perfectly fine if you "casually die under some random bombs" so that they can survive with the oil. I wouldn't say that is the goal of the people of country B too.
At the same way for example you may be saying that unemployment is a result of "inefficiencies" .... but suppose you were some rich guy sitting at the top of some world wide famous company.
Suddenly, that "inefficient" unemployment is so good for you...
A source of desperate workers that will work at your condition, selling their dignity so that they can eat while you swim in money?

user202362
that ... is exactly the opposite of my point.

and you call that "inefficient", "unneeded", "unwanted"?

user202362
9:09 AM
how many hours do you think wildlife have to work everyday when not feeding young?

user202362
probably less than 3

@Telkitty how many wild animals wear rare metals trinkets to show that they have the money to buy them?
How many animals would buy an app on their smartphones that just display a "I am rich" logo to show that they can waste money while others die every day of hunger?

user202362

user202362
look at how many things I have around my nest, I must be rich!

@Telkitty sorry, I can only see two ways to explain that image.

user202362
9:15 AM
well, if you are truly intelligent and efficient, you should spend less time and effort and end up with more

Let's agree on the assumption that the bird is doing that to attract a companion so that it could have children, right?

user202362
and if humans are truly intelligent and efficient, we should spend less time and effort and have created more than wildlife

so, either humans need to show that they are rich, they make other make sacrifices while they don't have to so that they will attract a top model girlfriend / boyfriend and have a successful life.... which reinforce my assumption that humanity as a whole doesn't have a common goal, only individuals do - every human is fine if other die as long that he/she survive

user202362
and if humans are truly intelligent and efficient, we should have spent less time and effort and have created more than wildlife

or they do it for other reasons, like individualism or self gratification, which doesn't seem really different.
my whole point is that before assuming some things are due to inefficiencies, one should ask if those "weird choices" aren't actually good for someone...

Not sure why Aaron's answer got so many downvotes (meta.stackoverflow.com/a/338347)... Python room people? Or group think?

4:47 PM
I feel like a bunch of people are on a crusade using the first thing they thought could be used against Aaron. I don't get it at all, it's a bloody chat room.

It appears a certain group of people really don't like him...

While there is not much to go on, there was some debate (to put it mildly) when that other room came into existence. I wouldn't have tried my luck on day one.

@Shog9 I don't think me posting an answer would have a lot of added value with yours Aarons answer already there.

@Stijn well... Are your comments adding value?

A bit, yes, but not enough for an answer, imho. I guess I should just shut up already then.
Hint taken.

4:57 PM
Hi @hichris123. I'm not trying to talk past you and I'm sincerely sorry if you believe that's what I'm attempting to do.

@tristan Um, yeah... okay, so what are you trying to accomplish with this?

And hi @Stijn. I think you're misunderstanding why I brought it up.
@hichris123 I believe I stated it plainly -- given the context, does anyone else think this smells funny?

@tristan Let me remind you of something you said yesterday:
in Python on Stack Overflow Chat, 21 hours ago, by tristan
[with the exclusion obviously being Aaron Hall who has called us petty tyrants and was dancing around serious questions during the nomination stage]
Does this smell funny to you?

If no, no. The question is pretty active though, so maybe it does.

First thing that Aaron does as a moderator that's visible.

4:59 PM
@hichris123 Sorry, your timelines don't match.

And you decide to challenge it?

@hichris123 And it's questionable.
Because it's questionable, a position others seem to agree with based on post activity.

@tristan And by +21 on an answer that starts off with "Who cares".

If you don't find it curious, cool, but it's raised at least my eyebrow.
Thanks for your input.

Look, you obviously have some history between you and Aaron.
Just don't be... snippy about it.

5:01 PM
You're misunderstanding and misreading it.

@tristan We used to be friends (or so I thought) - How can I build some trust with you?

@hichris123 I don't understand why you feel comfortable making snide remarks. Please stop.

@tristan Well, when you explicitly state "two of these moderators are good" and "one is not Aaron Hall"... tell me what you meant by that?

@AaronHall I think we still are friendly. In this instance, I believe your actions were questionable in motivation. I'd prefer to keep the discussion of that public on the site.
@hichris123 Please stop @ mentioning and talking to me, thank you.

I'm sorry for whenever I was passive aggressive in Python chat. I'm hoping for detente.

5:03 PM
@tristan Alrightly then. But do realize that this is all public, so... I suggest that you be kinder to people in the future.

@hichris123 I already asked you to stop talking to me, but please be aware that you can be serious without being rude. Have a good day.

Same to you.

@AaronHall Chatroom related drama is almost an initiation ritual for new mods now

@AaronHall I see this as different from the issue I raised on meta and why I originally posted a comment on your nomination. I was hoping you'd "knock the ball out of the park" by demonstrating that you've grown in your online interactions since ~~chat drama~~.

I don't know what you mean by that, man.
Put it on a T-ball stand for me.

5:05 PM
Isn't it true that readers of the question and the answer need more context/history to fully understand the issue raised and the current answers?

sigh
I agree with shog here, why is all this drama over unfreezing a room? Everyone could have done that

Isn't it true that this is a non-issue we could all do without? If there is a problem with the room itself, address that. If not, move on.

If I had a frozen room, I could probably get a mod to unfreeze it for me

@AaronHall It got to a point that Martijn even had to call you out on being passive aggressive.

Yeah, on second thought I probably should've started a new room for this... ah, well. Hindsight.

5:07 PM
@Magisch It's about motivation for having mod permissions and judgment on when to use them.

Hindsight, like the next US elections, is 2020

@tristan Ok, I apologize.

@tristan Would you care if he unfroze literally any other room?

@Magisch As mentioned in another comment, that's not a fair reduction.

Why don't y'all make noise when he does something with a negative effect because this isn't that, and it's entirely inconsequential
Give some benefit of the doubt :)

5:08 PM
@AaronHall Where it gets concerning is when your initial reaction to a questionable action comes with a passive aggressive remark.

@Bart I can't tell I seem to miss pieces of the puzzle
@Magisch are you assuming good faith there?

@rene Indeed
... as always

That sounds as a good approach

And, where it became sucky because it was already taking place on the public site, is the sincere concern of "are you sure that being a moderator is a good decision for you?"

5:09 PM
@tristan Whether or not it was a good decision is sorta irrelevant now, right? What do you hope to induce with this discussion? Self reflection?

@Magisch And the post was made because it's the first demonstration of "maybe it's not"

I disagree

And there's the reason for the post.

I think we should assume good faith and give him a fair shot until proven otherwise

@tristan first sounds like you expect there to be more?

5:11 PM
If there are real blunders, raise those

@rene No, that it was possible that there would never be a demonstration of it.

@tristan it somehow sounds like people have been looking for the first "maybe it's not" to bring up as soon as it happened. So far this is a non issue. One incident (if it is that) does not a pattern make.

@tristan You still haven't answered this: What do you hope to effect with this?

@Magisch

And the endgame of this
Suppose aaron concedes your point
What do you want to happen?

5:12 PM
Do all discussions have endgames?
You're trying to walk me into a false framework

If you are making an argument contrary to someone else's opinion, it's sort of implied you want something
Even if just changing their mind about it

(shrug) I guess I'll leave take-aways as an exercise for the reader
If you want to think I want something from it, you're free to do so

The election post was closed as unclear? meta.stackoverflow.com/posts/338289/revisions Wow.

@hichris123 Seems Cold Fire closed it only to vote to reopen it as it had 4 cv
but the other 4
just wtf

@tristan I want to deal in good faith with you, and I'm trying not to presume much. Are the Python room owners afraid that I'll push my opinions on how the room should be run on them? Because I made it clear that I would not ask them to change, and I meant it.

5:15 PM
@hichris123 at least not the usual suspects

Luckily.

Seriously though

Wonder if they still have a review ban from that.

@AaronHall Oh, that was never a concern at all. We're pretty mod heavy in room/6. And even so, I don't think that would have happened.

there should be some consequence for that
close votes aren't a toy to mess around with for giggles
Who the heck is voting to close this post as unclear? I mean cmon — Magisch 7 hours ago

5:19 PM
Anyway, I'm quite crap at articulating myself in short-form, so I'm going to hop out of tavern. Have a good day all.

@tristan What can I do to earn your trust? I like you, I like the other Python room owners, in spite of our past. I want to earn your trust. I may not have gotten your vote but you are important stakeholders to me, not just in chat but on Stack Overflow.

* Stack Overflow
I'm not sure I can support a moderator who can't use the trademark correctly. ;)

it's clearly a sign that he intends to bring down the entire institution and re-create it according to his own space-hating designs. RAAARRR

5:48 PM
*crickets*

@AaronHall Sorry, was good about doing work for a few minutes. Warning that I'm tired/distracted.
This is entirely separate from the Python room and I can't speak for other people there. Stackoverflow isn't important to me and, more specifically, is far less important to me than you are, as a person. I don't distrust you, but you have the tendency to reframe conversations and feedback in a way that puts you in a positive light. That's frustrating. I honestly, unfortunately, believe that many of your actions on the site are ego driven, and my concern (message length, argh)
for you is that becoming a moderator will help feed an unhealthy urge. The comment structure is as bad as twitter as a means for actual discussion as it's a crowded, busy feed, where the only take away on anything non-dry and technical tends to be an emotional reaction.
So, in a system rife for misunderstanding, permanently preserved, where the feelings of the moment are lost on future readers, actions like you made wherein you took a cheap passive aggressive remark in an answer or framed your response as if I was concerned about the placement of a feed, the fastest way to correct course and disregard the indirection is to quickly address it (again, busy chat, limited char length), and repeat the question with less attention to tone.
That said, reopening the chat room that was created in protest, frozen and addressed by moderators, seemed like using newly found site permissions in a way that gave off a weird smell. That room will go idle again and freeze, which sucks, because I think it's important to you, but at the same time, you created it to create distance between yourself and the response to your behaviors in a different community.
That block of text unfortunately dips into ~~human elements~~ that's not the "X happened, then Y: weird?" of today's meta post and I don't want you to use that to share feelings that you may have, but don't want to openly state (again, busy chat with strangers, permanent). Anyway, I don't distrust you, and it would make me happy if it seemed like you started to care less about how people perceive you.

Hey shog
You seem to pop up places randomly
Are you ... an algorhitm?

No, a floating head, duh.
Except when his head tilts the wrong way.

@tristan What I hear you saying is I have a big ego. Well, I do. I expect great things from myself, and I feel like a failure when I don't accomplish my goals and like I want to curl up and die, and when I do accomplish my goals I feel like I'm on top of the world and I want to tell everybody. I've been told I can be pretty intense. That may be understating it. I feel a great weight of responsibility now. I want to do the right things, and help others do the right things too.
I want your help too. I'm asking you for your help. For better or worse I won the election, and I am bound by my promises when running. I won't abdicate. And in a few years I want you to be able to say you are proud of me and that you knew me long before.

6:27 PM
@tristan You're a kewl chord.

@AaronHall I legitimately don't know how to respond to this. I didn't say you have a big ego. This speaks directly to my concern about whether or not this is healthy for you, but that ship has sailed.
@bjb568 I don't know what this means.

The Tristan chord is a chord made up of the notes F, B, D♯, and G♯. More generally, it can be any chord that consists of these same intervals: augmented fourth, augmented sixth, and augmented ninth above a bass note. It is so named as it is heard in the opening phrase of Richard Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde as part of the leitmotif relating to Tristan. == Background == The notes of the Tristan chord are not unusual; they could be respelled enharmonically to form a common half-diminished seventh chord. What distinguishes the chord is its unusual relationship to the implied key of its ...

@Shog9 tbh gophers are much better then people

I think I've tried all I can.

user315433
Have you tried roasted turkey with cranberry sauce?

When people say they've tried everything, usually they've only tried one thing.

user315433
There are over 4000 questions on SO with "I have tried everything", call them out on it.

Hits to the Stack Overflow load balancer: 2016-10-18: 230,964,726 2016-11-22: 319,217,869 Both are Tuesdays, so…that went up a little.

Nick is always cryptic with straightforward stats.
Or is that a feature of Twitter?

user315433
It didn't sound like he knew the cause.

user315433
So, stackoverflow.blog was soon followed by stackoverflow.email, what other cool new TLDs are we going to see?

@i3arnon I think it’s the ad server shadow testing of a new algorithm, I hope. But that’s still a sharp increase.

Does this person have any idea what they're saying?

user315433
7:48 PM
They are following a script, probably many times a day.

8:15 PM
@AaronHall What are they saying, out of curiosity?
I'm at a place where I can't turn my speakers on.

user315433
They are giving unsolicited SEO advice, such as "get rid of ... everything here (circling the entire homepage), put user testimonials and your phone number".

O.o

Yes... they already lost me at "put your phone number there".

@zaq The video became a must-watch
I mean, it's prolly boring, but curiosity does what curiosity does best

And.. they want keywords like "highest quality" and "lowest prices" there.... ROFL!

8:19 PM
How does putting my phone number on the front page of SU helps in SEO?

So you get rid of those pesky Stack Exchange Support Number spammers, duh.

. . .
Did they get redirected to SU's 404 page and think it's some kind of an Amazon?

They got one thing right though. That long list of questions doesn't look exciting to outsiders.

Q: Tooltip for flagging chat messages wrong

muddyfishWhen trying to flag a message in a chatroom's starboard, the tooltip whilst hovering over the flag button is click to star.

Hehe fun bug

@S.L.Barth Yah, that's what my friends always tell me.
And unsurprisingly, and because of a poor command of English, they never understood my SE hype.

I tried to get some friends on SE. Not much success so far.
...and most of them are reasonably fluent in English.

8:28 PM
Well, you can't just expect someone without questions to come into a gathering of people with questions or answers and stay there.

Well, they do sometimes have relevant knowledge. Whether it's anime, programming, pets...
So, they can answer, too.

user315433
I sometimes run into people I know IRL here; didn't have to invite them. People on the first page by all-time rep at Chess, Music: Practice & Theory, Mi Yodeya...

First page by all-time rep? Sounds like you've got some pretty bright acquaintances!

user315433
Working at a university usually helps with that.

Well, unless your friends are confident answerers; then showing them a list of questions they can answer would intrigue them

8:35 PM
@zaq True. But I also knew a Ph.D. who knew Stack Overflow, knew Ask Ubuntu... but didn't know about Pets.SE. And that Ph.D. had a dog.

@S.L.Barth These are people of the zaq clan

@M.A.R. Yes, I've been thinking that I should just share a tag.

@S.L.Barth Or one interesting question
You know, whatever would attract them

Tried that. Even tried the clickbai- I mean, Hot Network Questions.

user315433
Or you could wear a badge to work. "Ask me about my SE reputation".

8:37 PM
SE is meant to be strict, and usually is much more than other sites out there
So sometimes naziz downvotez sounds shocking and leaves a bad taste

user315433
Well, there's that mentorship program that Jon came up with a while ago...

(For future readers of that message above, I do NOT mean downvoters are nazis. I'm a downvoter myself.)

@M.A.R. That's part of the problem. You want them to have a good first experience, but then you need to explain "How To Answer".

user315433
And it wasn't even mentioned in the SEQP2 post.

@zaq Is it there? Or is it still just somewhere in the pile of ideas they could implement?

8:38 PM
@zaq There was also meta.ELU trying to do something about it.
But as the tradition obliges, you should procrastinate doing stuff in language meta sites.

I think @M.A.R. is on to something though - sharing the right question could help.

Of course I am. I'm on a lot of things.

Problem is: they have to read your advice on how to answer, AND the question.

Well, let's treat this analytically.
What would make an SE level question/answer interesting?

Hm... I guess, relevance to one's situation.

8:40 PM
Ideally only if it's related to what they studied in the university.
Realistically, it heavily depends on X.
where X = the confidence they have in themselves to contribute something

If that confidence isn't justified, they could be in for a cold shower.

X = Y^2*Z where Y = confidence in answering and Z = confidence in commenting
@S.L.Barth Yeah, but you should tell them about how things are.
That would reduce Y and Z but would also decrease A where A = the chance that they'll get bitten

And that is the hard part: you got to tell them how things are, and they still have to read the question. That's two pieces of text. People want to watch pictures, not read text.

The pain would be reduced if you do it gradually
Don't drop tons of stuff to read at them
Also make sure to speak about your interests in SE.
''Hey there's this site, and I've grown on it because''
Next meeting, ''they have these high quality answers I was looking for an answer for. However, they're a bit strict''

Well, at work I don't need to introduce people to SO.
Some of them even have accounts, but rarely use them.

8:46 PM
Another meeting ''remember this famous question we wondered about at that while? This is a link to the answer''

Still... the idea isn't bad.

@S.L.Barth Didn't mean meetings at work, just generally any meeting

Notably, this is how I got my friend to participate in Biology.SE.
His English is at best B1, so he was struggling a bit, and even with that he was attracted to Bio.SE.

The good thing about SE is that, with community editing, we can often overcome the language barrier.

8:49 PM
But we don't overcome the causes.
People with language barrier get more hostile as they very easily misinterpret comments and answers.

We are, of course, very direct. To the point of being blunt.
That's easily mistaken for rudeness.

Well, maybe on SO. But on smaller sites, there's always sugar coating and not being blunt.
And we still end up being misinterpreted

Well, we can try... a certain amount of misunderstanding is unavoidable, sadly.
I suppose, from this conversation, that your friend had some misunderstandings on Biology.SE, when he first came there?
...Well, if you prefer not to go into that, that's fine, of course.

@S.L.Barth speak for yourself, will you ...

@rene Not sure if that's an ironic comment, or if you're serious.

8:59 PM
@S.L.Barth He didn't
