Congratulations all!

@zaq \o/

Congrats!

....there goes your quiet time, @AaronHall! :-)

user315433
30277 voted, my prediction of 30837 was indeed slightly optimistic. But not too bad.

8:02 PM
That prediction seems pretty close.

@zaq How much was it in the last election?
I mean in the last last. I mean last, but not this recent last, the other last. Argh

user315433

user315433
This is the first ever election with 30K voters.

user315433
Ooh, opavote now shows the threshold in a sensible way, not as a separate bar down below.

Q: November 2016 Community Moderator Election RESULTS

Shog9Stack Overflow's 8th moderator election has come to a close, the votes have been tallied, and the 3 new moderators are: They'll be joining the existing crew shortly — please thank them for volunteering, and share your assistance and advice with them as they learn the ropes! So, no retirements this time?

That's boring
And TBH I really prefer if people don't litter the answer boxes with CONGRATZ
Comments are fine and they take a click to purge if needed.
And they don't take much space.
But the answer box . . . come on man, we already know you want to congratulate him

user315433
Opavote site offers to recount ballots with a different method, but you can't change the number of winners there. Boo.

user315433
If they decide to call up 2 more (which seems to be the usual number to call up), it will be Andy and Samuel Liew.

user315433
Not obvious if this will be the choice, given that the field wasn't very deep this time. Running Spring 2017 election, to return to spring schedule, might be better.

user315433
But with 22 current moderators, one might think the law of diminishing returns is going to apply.

8:13 PM
The law of diminishing returns?
Oh.
I wasn't familiar with what it's called in English.

Here are your coveralls @AaronHall. Take this mop. And now go clean up this mess we created. :D

Squeezed the modchart horizontally by 0.5 for readability.

user315433
I'm tracking name changes as long as mods/employees are active, but not after that (so, 0xf7777777 stays)

user315433
Besides using logarithmic fit for number of voters, I used power law for other election stats.
My predictions were: 389803 eligible, 177861 visit site, 88339 visit election, 30837 vote.
Actual results were: 388531 eligible, 194203 visited site, 88587 visited election, 30277 voted.
I think I get a donut in reward. (Except for that "visited site" part...)

@zaq Dude, you're too good at this.
And I guess more people visited since it's fall.
And homewerks don't doz demselfs.

user315433
Those are visitors eligible to vote, so 150+ rep. Still can be homework, but...

8:49 PM
But they can't be much?

user315433
They can't be 1-rep 1-time askers, I meant.

> Down-voting should be reserved for extreme cases. It's not meant as a substitute for communication and editing. Instead of voting down: ... If the question is duplicate or off-topic, flag it for moderator attention. - sez Help Center

user315433
Really, we aren't supposed to downvote off-topic posts?

user315433
And duplicates should be flagged for moderator attention?

Raises eyebrows
Hey everyone, SO help center is . . . being read.

user315433
Yeah, I was actually looking for something there that would say that votes are anonymous. No luck.

9:40 PM
@AaronHall congrats with your diamond. Please make good use of it.

Fresh ideas for homepage redesign:

user315433

@rene thanks! :)

user315433
Seriously, where are satisfied customer testimonials?

user315433
Not on Meta, that's for sure.

> Got my answer. +1, 10/10 would ask again.

user315433
Jeremy "fixed"/"corrected" the ballot file by ordering the submitted votes lexicographically, instead of chronologically.

user315433
Opavote goes further and aggregates identical ballots (as Jeremy mentioned earlier today). This makes it easy to find the most common ones:

cool!

user315433
627 voted: Aaron Hall, Samuel Liew, Bhargav Rao
583 voted: Aaron Hall, Bhargav Rao, Samuel Liew
366 voted: Aaron Hall, deceze, Samuel Liew

user315433
Go figure why the most common choice has a non-winning candidate as #2.

10:09 PM
Most common slate probably represents a type of voter. Not enough other slates/types of voters wanted him, apparently.

@zaq Isn't it because the votes in general are just not enough?
The fact that a pattern was common doesn't mean Samuel was first or second pick by many people.
Maybe he should try becoming people's favorite

Anonymous
@zaq I'd just like to clarify that the votes were not exactly ordered chronologically in the past either, so folks should avoid trying to draw conclusions from that old data.

@Jeremy became a blue name? I didn't notice.
A belated congrats

Oct 10, that explains it
I've been paying less attention to here in the past two months

Oct 10 = Dec 8, so it hasn't happened yet.

@smci: That's on MSO, where downvotes have a different meaning. I was talking about the main site - as I believe most people have been. — Jon Skeet 6 hours ago

The Strauss–Howe generational theory, created by authors William Strauss and Neil Howe, identifies a recurring generational cycle in American history. Strauss and Howe lay the groundwork for the theory in their 1991 book Generations, which retells the history of America as a series of generational biographies going back to 1584. In their 1997 book The Fourth Turning, the authors expanded the theory to focus on a fourfold cycle of generational types and recurring mood eras in American history. They have since expanded on the concept in a variety of publications. The theory was developed to describe...

I received a notification that Jon Skeet posted a comment on a horrible MSO question of mine.
That's… great.

10:15 PM
Part of me says this is bullshit, part of me says they've done a good job explaining some stuff.

user315433
@bjb568 It's okay, you were new then. BTW you posted on the same day as my current network account was created.

@bjb568 Everyone has horrible stuff.

user315433
Hm, there is no place where the age of account is visible, right? Only site profiles, which come and go.

Now I would prolly try to go dip up zaq's, but I'll pass.
Since it's 2 a.m.

The worst part of my question is how many upvotes it has.
@M.A.R. Completely non-scientific.

10:17 PM
Not non-scientific, but without empirical data.

user315433
One of two people who answered became a mod, the other got deleted.

Scientific stuff is to explain observations. And it explains observations well.
@zaq I'll have that in mind

user315433
API says I got merged in August 2015... that's news to me. api.stackexchange.com/docs/…

@M.A.R. It's non-falsifiable, so it's a useless theory.
Whatever happens to each generation, you can still pigeonhole them somehow.

10:20 PM
For varying definitions of useless

user315433
bjb's merge history is complicated: api.stackexchange.com/docs/…

@bjb568 I tried to make sense of that question from smci but in my attempt to verify if I understood what they were after all I got was a snark, so I conclude I have no idea where they are complaining about.

Why's it giving me that?
It still does that if I do it in an incognito window.

Hmm. Maybe you hammered reload a few too many times in close succession.

Meh. Works now. Borkey.

a down vote for this doesn't allow for free speech. I have no problem with a comment that says you disagree. — Willow Rex 2 hours ago

Just me or do I not see any SVGs there?

On second thought, I don't like the idea of a required custom thing added to spam flags. A major change in how flags are processed, including changing the API that has frozen since February 2014.

user315433
All because some folks flag incorrectly. Meh.

Sled dogs were important for transportation in arctic areas, hauling supplies in areas that were inaccessible by other methods. They were used with varying success in the explorations of both poles, as well as during the Alaskan gold rush. Sled dog teams delivered mail to rural communities in Alaska and northern Canada. Sled dogs today are still used by some rural communities, especially in areas of Alaska and Canada and throughout Greenland. They are used for recreational purposes, and are raced in events known as dog sled races such as the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest. == History == Sled dogs...
