Any opinion on projectors vs giant TV screens in classrooms?

user259867
I'm prejudiced against the latter for some reason. But we're getting more of those.

user259867

user259867
^ This kind of thing, in a classroom for about 30 students.

12:58 AM
ell election , nomination phase.. @bjb?
Is this sentence correct?
> I love grammar and words and I am a native speaker of Australian English.
feel maybe it could use a comma or one less and, idk
words are tough but sentences are tuffer
should someone start new bug here since it's not updated but has status-completed?
i already flagged to remove the status-completed but it's been 4 hours, still pending

user259867
Probably another bug. Bug A: no data transfer to SEDE. Bug B: old data transferred to SEDE.

@NormalHuman i think you said you don't watch (/much) tv, so maybe that's where prejudice comes from, even though it's not just a tv anymore, idk, i hate chalkboards though fyi

user259867
@SmokeDetector tpu- spam

user259867
Yeah, I don't like having the chalkboard next to PC either. The keyboard gets messy.

Let's not forget the humble Bicycles site, which celebrates its 5th birthday today. The most-viewed question on the site wasn't asked until 2011: it is How can I tell which size chain my bike uses?

user259867
@SmokeDetector fp- skincare in file path.

@CRABOLO It's a sentence I'd write in second grade, but it may be technically correct.
I'd say
> I'm a native speaker of Australian English and I love [verb]ing words and studying grammar.
It definitely needs verbies there, what exactly do you like about words and grammar?
@NormalHuman It's less big.

user259867
Less big than what?

Projectors.
It may be harder to see, and a lot of times on projectors you're already hitting command-plus.
Whereas small screens are px until you have bad eyes and they're cm, when showing something to a class units are ft.

user259867
Yes, and with the default resolution of 1920 by 1080, text is pretty much unreadable. Typical projectors use something 640 by whatever, on a larger screen.

1:33 AM
Plz no imperial, it makes my brain hurt

user259867
Yes, no imperial pixels please.

It depends, if the TV is put only in front of the class, it is useless compare to projector

@bjb568 Smaller. For a native English speaker...

user259867
The classroom is ~30 seats, about 4 rows of chairs.

@hichris123 No, just less big!

user259867
1:35 AM
Or maybe it's more small?

It's same medium?
Thot process:
Projector default!
Projector big!
Bigs good!
TV less big!

Unless they also put the TVs halfway on the side, which might be helpful for back-seater on bigger class... but 30's too small for this to be effective.

user259867
You can see on the picture it's in a corner of the room, on the right.

user259867
Which means the ratio of longest distance / shortest distance within the class is something like 10.

I don't see any problem (to fix|that it's fixing).

1:39 AM
I think the bigger issue in classrooms today is the use of underpowered speakers being used to play movie soundtracks and distorting the bass

doesn't it have wheels to move it up front and center

user259867
No, it's wall mounted.

@James Yes. They should by studio monitors. For every class.

user259867
I think the even bigger issue is playing movies in class instead of teaching. shrug

:o You've found the secret of history teachers

user259867
1:40 AM
Although it's tempting to put some Matlab videos on (the speakers are pretty good) and let them learn...

> Uh, so there's this movie on netflix, it demonstrates how they used to fight wars. Except it's not historically accurate. Let's play it for the next week!

user259867
I refuse to use "proper" capitalization MATLAB. It's for those FORTRAN, ALGOL, and COBOL times.

user259867
Not to mention BASIC.

SNOBOL!

@bjb568 Half of my daily history class is discussing current events (ie. politics) and having "class discussions" in which the teacher shares his distorted views of the government (at least distorted IMO).

1:42 AM
lol
I had a substitute history teacher who said she "used to work here". She was eager to give here view of controversial topics. I wonder why it's "used".

Well this history teacher is really just a football coach who happened to have a degree in education
The third day of school he wanted to "get to know us" so he told us to pick one thing we would bring onto the "Survivor" TV show if we were on it, and we went around the class sharing our name and what item we wanted to bring. And that was the entirety of history class.

Today I took a stats class, my first dual-enrollment. The teacher didn't have a computer so he was squinting at his phone and mumbling about the syllabus the whole time. Then he covered histogram/piechart/bargraph and mean/median/mode/variance/stddev.

user259867
@bjb568 What exactly is dual enrollment?

hi

user259867
More importantly, were any bar plots with whiskers involved?

Nah, he mentioned it but didn't draw or provide examples.

@NormalHuman isn't that where you go to a college to take a class or something

2:07 AM
@NormalHuman You take it at college and get both highschool and college credit.

user259867
So you have to commute between HS and college then?

Yep.

Do you only have part-time classes at your high school then?

Nope, full 6 classes at HS. But AP comp sci is a study hall and I'm a library assistant during my real study hall.

@bjb568 I must agree, AP comp sci is a study hall. So your dual enrollment class is...after school?
I have no idea how dual enrollment works

2:09 AM
@bjb568 sounds like plagiarism

lol

Submitting your paper to two different classes (and doing badly on both) is a pretty good example

lol!

@bjb568 do you use a textbook for your ap cs class?

@SantaClaus Yep, an hour after
@SantaClaus no, we use Think Java like a bible

2:13 AM
@bjb568 We use bluepelicanjava.com but the teacher is looking for new resources
It has "Evaluation Copy" watermarked on every page.

@NormalHuman Cooking up bar plots with whiskers is something you’d expect of a bunch of sailors. Or a cat.

user259867
I still remember a comment one pre-med made about our curriculum... how he's going from organic chemistry class to drawing box plots with whiskers in stats.

Heisenberg has a box plot with whiskers.

@SantaClaus eeeeeew

and now I can't reproduce it...

@Braiam Well I can't reproduce the bug on that page either, so maybe facebook is having a bad day

if FB is having a bad day, I'm having a crappy one, weird stuff keeps happening

I'm having a good day since I took a 3.5h nap.
It always amazes me here that the size of the phone addrspace here is only 10^7 since everyone has the same area code.

naps only serve to make a crappy day crappier... in my specific case

user259867
2:52 AM
10^7 is Ten. Million. Phone numbers.

Yeah, it's such a small world.
> Students are to behave in a socially appropriate manner, demonstrating respect to themselves, peers, and adults.
lol, no

@bjb568 respect isn't demanded, it is earned

Yes, and "socially appropriate" isn't a good way to add, and "themselves, peers, and adults" is a strange way of saying "everyone".

user259867
You don't have to respect underclassmen, apparently.

Well, it's just for one class.
But it doesn't cover school property.
It's really just self-explanatory anyway, this isn't what syllabi are for.
> A syllabus (pl. syllabuses or syllabi) is an outline and summary of topics to be covered in an education or training course. It is descriptive.
lol

It signals to the police that you're stoned.
> Homework will generally b e assigned on blackb oard (tentatively) in each week throughout
the semester (9-11 HWs).
You'd think this is history or something.

@bjb568 ew

3:04 AM
I think is something... smelly

Huh, this class doesn't give out A+s. It has every other +/- letter grade…

E-

no Es

Skipped a letter, did they?

They always skip poor E

3:06 AM
Why?

Except kiddie skewl, where E is excellent. Then S+, S, S- (satisfactory). Then that's it.

E gets no respect.

user259867
@bjb568 The dual enrollment one? It's not unusual for a college to not have the grade of A+.

Maybe people got confused a think college E is kiddie skewl excellent.
@NormalHuman I hear the UK skewls have A+ and A* and are considering A**
I NEED ALL THE STARS

So the standard 40% C's, 20% each B's and D's, and 10% each A's and F's then?

3:08 AM
I guess.

Then you just have to outrun the idiots.

user259867
That's not what anybody does, in my experience (anymore).

This guy has advices! He's an SO natural…

user259867
Hopefully this isn't a class in English.

WTF ARE ADV*UCKINGICES?

3:09 AM
@NormalHuman I think that's what my history teacher was trying to achieve when giving out random grades to people…
He mentioned grade distros around 72 a couple of times.

Bell distros?

Therefore, since I got some quarter Bs, I also needed a D…

Apparently, there are some professors (who I have not had) at my school that will force the class grades to meet a normal distribution--if everyone got 98% and above, a 98% would be a failing grade.

@tchrist Probably not intelligent enough to know what a bell is (he a'int teachin' US after all), he probably just read somewhere to have 3 people out of a 25 person class get an A, 6 a B… 3,6,6,2,1 is about what happened as a result.

So how well you do doesn't matter. Just whether you do better than everbody else. That's healthy.
Does this guy come with a translator?

3:13 AM
Translator?

Adviceries.

nah

@bjb568 He probably doesn't have enough entropy.

He gives out crap assignments, then nobody really does what he wants
Um, I don't like him, or her, or him… or any of the students. All the powerpoint suck! I'll just use random select to make my bell curve!
There we're whiskers!
He just wasn't able to do the ppt
