If you have lots of reputation, the automated merge bots tend to get intimidated. "What if this is someone trying to STEAL HIS REPS?" they think; "WE'D GET FIRED!" They're not the smartest of bots. So they put them in a queue and wait for someone to come along and approve them. Which I occasion...

Better yet, abolish the concept of an accepted answer altogether. Even if we stop pinning the accepted answer to the top, that's not going to stop people from commenting "This should be the accepted answer." on the highest-voted answer. Let the OP comment "this worked for me" if they want, we'll just delete the comment after the fact. Sound fair? Let's be honest, nobody really gives a crap what worked for the OP, especially if it isn't the best solution. Q: How do we encourage edits to obsolete/out of date answers?

As the network ages and we have answers that are 7+ years old, we run into situations where changes in technology, etc. result in a once great answer becoming out-of-date, obsolete, or somewhat problematic. Google and many others handle a bulk of "technical support for free products" via support forums. Meta doesn't work for that, because users get downvoted there too. Set up a complaints.stackexchange on phpBB.

@NormalHuman So in all seriousness, people do a lot better on per-site metas where the most common problems haven't been discussed endlessly. Usually the first person to raise an issue does ok. It's when someone asks for the Nth time and willfully ignores that their question is a duplicate that the downvotes start raining in.

That's probably a testable claim: compare the voting on duplicates to the original question on meta.
