Why is everybody surprised Windows 10 has certain "issues"? You get it for free ... from a company that intends to make a profit. If you're not paying, you're the product.

lol

I've intentionally not upgraded - I have this thing against using a new OS the day it's released. The biggest complaints I've seen so far revolve around WiFi Sense and Edge taking over the default browser again. Are there other issues?

@Andy Jeff Atwood reported that something happened.

Oh, I did see that. That could be good or bad though.

Can't verify either of those @Andy, but I also don't use WiFi Sense (seems kinda useless for me) and Edge hasn't tried to revolt... yet

Idle thought: what if recommendation questions were allowed, but only in protected form (rep > X required to answer)?

no!

user259867
4:24 PM
Why?

too opinion based

user259867
Primarily opinion-based questions can be always closed as such. The fact that a special reason tool-rec had to be added suggests that not all tool-rec questions are primarily opinion-based.

> Is there a site that can be used to host a CSS file and does not require registration (i.e., kind of like imgur)?

user259867
^ what's opinion based about that?

because humans try to digress at any opportunity, making the main propose of any site dilute in tangential topics

4:30 PM
what @Braiam said

user259867
So there's going to be a lot of discussion about unregistered CSS hosting options (of which I know none as of now, btw), drowning out the valuable "why doesn't my Java program work" questions?

no, the problem is that if you allow that kind of discussion, people would want other kinds of discussions too
that's why keeping and enforcing a scope it is so important

user259867
Keeping and enforcing a scope is important. That doesn't explain why recommendations, which were in scope originally, had to be removed.

Shog9If you have lots of reputation, the automated merge bots tend to get intimidated. "What if this is someone trying to STEAL HIS REPS?" they think; "WE'D GET FIRED!" Better yet, abolish the concept of an accepted answer altogether. Even if we stop pinning the accepted answer to the top, that's not going to stop people from commenting "This should be the accepted answer." on the highest-voted answer. Let the OP comment "this worked for me" if they want, we'll just delete the comment after the fact. Sound fair? Let's be honest, nobody really gives a crap what worked for the OP, especially if it isn't the best solution. Not to mention not every OP understands the very concept either. — BoltClock ♦ May 6 '14 at 16:26

There are issues that nobody with 15 rep on the site has... which does not mean nobody in the world has them. In such cases letting the OP designate an answer makes sense.

Q: How do we encourage edits to obsolete/out of date answers?

bluefeetAs the network ages and we have answers that are 7+ years old, we run into situations where changes in technology, etc. result in a once great answer becoming out-of-date, obsolete, or somewhat problematic. We don’t want to lose or delete these answers, due to legacy applications that still need...

user259867
So many different ideas already put forward... I don't even know if there's a point of adding one more, but here it is anyway:

user259867
Accept mark should pin to the top only for one year after the acceptance.

user259867
If after a year of being at the top, the answer can't stay there based on the votes, then it's likely not the one that should be at the top.

@NormalHuman The accept mark is just as subjective as voting
Besides, the vote number is huge. If I see a zero accept and a 10 vote second place, you can bet where I'll be taking my advice.

I know someone else who's been looking for a technical solution to "complainy emails" problem...

step #1: don't notify people of close votes
step #2: remember why step #1 exists
the comment thing worked pretty well though. If only I could find a way to redirect all complaints into a single thread on meta.

user259867
Google and many others handle a bulk of "technical support for free products" via support forums. Meta doesn't work for that, because users get downvoted there too. Set up a complaints.stackexchange on phpBB.

10:54 PM
@NormalHuman Isn't that what Hacker News is for?

user259867
Doesn't feel the same to those posting. Google Forums are endorsed as an official support channel, even though the chance of running into an employee there is tiny.

user259867
And there's at least a remote idea of something being noticed and escalated. (Granted, that last part works with HN too)

@NormalHuman So in all seriousness, people do a lot better on per-site metas where the most common problems haven't been discussed endlessly. Usually the first person to raise an issue does ok. It's when someone asks for the Nth time and willfully ignores that their question is a duplicate that the downvotes start raining in.
That's probably a testable claim: compare the voting on duplicates to the original question on meta.

user259867
True. And many per site metas are severely underused. Direct complaints about SO to meta.beer.... win-win.
