@LynnCrumbling well, yes, it is the only version I have running on this box and I was wondering if he linked directly to the url because that had one 404 in it and I expect access to go bÔrken if it sees one error....

Does anyone understand what the purpose is of someone posting spam about Tech Support hotline phone numbers?

to get phone calls?
kick-back fee I suspect

@LanceRoberts Could be a third party being hired to promote the service. The service may not be aware of the means that they are using.

Ok. At first I thought someone was trying to let people know about a secret hotline phone number they've found. I've put some of those out at sites that collect them, but it seemed weird to keep spamming it.

@LanceRoberts should totally stop talking about hotline phone numbers... you're attracting spam

Could be a guy that owns a business and went out and bought a piece of software that claims to get you more business by posting online. The user typed in a description, a phone number, and the application goes off and does evil stuff.
@rene Ooooooh! That's how it works????

It can't be a coincidence

You are just seeing the side-effect of SO gathering a lot of link traps and poor content that can't be effectively moderated anymore. These vampire sites have a much easier time lately getting ahead in the Google ranking by filtering the junk. Some background is here. — Hans Passant 7 hours ago

I conjecture that Web Applications suffered so much in Google rank (more than any other SE site, it seems) because a noticeable percentage of posts are locked, unanswered, rejected migration from Super User, etc.

@HomegrownTomato m? from where that comes from?

user259867
@Braiam SE serve this when detecting that their content is being proxied.

You'd have to navigate to a malicious site to see that, so I'd rather not test.

By the way, I don't think that "proxy" is officially a verb... It seems the page author wasn't even sure if the correct -ing form is "proxying" or "proxing".

Is today the record phone support day ever?

It sounds like the OP is genuinely trying to help you. That doesn't mean that the advice being dished out is actually helpful, just that there is no malicious intent. Sometimes unhelpful advice is a function of how the question was (mis)interpreted or sometime an answerer just thinks that they have incite to provide, even if incorrect. If the user has exerted any amount of effort in trying to work with you, I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt, regardless of what motives they may have. After all, you just may end up getting your problem solved... — Lynn Crumbling 54 secs ago

IT invents a fair amount of socially-acceptable verbs, official or not. Google. Grep. Firewall.

@LynnCrumbling Ok, next time I first rant in this room so you can write a sensible comment...

Oh wow... the answer does not even come close to dealing with the problems in the question, is also incorrect, and yet an upvote!

@Ender A third party commented that the answer in question isn't beneficial and is actually incorrect. You have a recourse when that happens: You can point out that the answer is wrong. Over time, this leads to downvotes, which may encourage a self-delete. — Lynn Crumbling 9 secs ago

@hichris123 Two biggest sites by QPD, by far. Even now, when many schools are out, Math gets more QPD than Super User, Server Fault, Ask Ubuntu and Cross Validated combined (these are the next four sites in QPD.

Q: Bad Guy Gets Killed With Paper

pee2peeThis particular scene, the killer comes to the house (as a guest???)/and gets stripped (without question) to show they have no weapons Meets head bad guy (oriental???) and kneels then creates paper dart, blows/throws it, and kills bad dude! Maybe fairly recently. Past few years???

That site also has a question quality problem, I'm afraid...

Using any fewer than three question marks in a row on Movies.SE is clearly a syntax error.

To use.
For maths.

user259867
Different calculators are better at different kinds of calculations.

10:22 PM
For like calculuses and stuffs.

user259867
And them being allowed vs not allowed on exams depends on the functions they have.

user259867
E.g., it's pretty usual to find a college calculus class where TI-83 and TI-84 are okay, but TI-89 and TI-92 are verboten.

Really, they care? I've never seen people care outside of the SAT, but even that is pretty lax.

user259867
The basic difference is whether they do symbolic derivatives/integrals. If they do, a lot of calculus exam problems become pointless.

Huh, but there are no-calculator portions of exams…
But anyway, I'd want to have a powerful one for home use.

user259867
10:26 PM
Long story short: TI-83/84 (there's very little difference) is the most common type in use in college math classes. It plots things, and can do numeric integrals, but does not do symbolic math.

user259867

user259867
@bjb568 If you have a computer, why would you want that?

Ok, I'll get a fancy one and get TI-84 if needed for class.
@HomegrownTomato It's easier.

@bjb568 desmos.com is easier

needs more buttons

user259867

And cloud.sagemath.com for serious stuff.

user259867
The only reason I own a calculator at all is so that I can tell students which buttons to push. Wouldn't think of using it for my own purposes.

But I like calculators…

10:52 PM
@bjb568 "I need a calculator. Which I want to buy?"???
the correct way to ask is "¿Cual deberia comprar?", here should becomes deberia and obviously I cut down the word count because spanish needs less words: which one = cual; should I = deberia
