@LaszloPapp So make ..... the ..... feature ..... request .....

@LaszloPapp Yes. After review/discussion.

I lost my motivation.
I am now in the process of using that crap tag.

@LaszloPapp I would advice you not to do that.

Don't be surprised if other members of the community don't take to that. And I don't mean anyone here or anyone that has ever been in touch with you.

Q: Tag deletion system

Madara UchihaI've encountered many tags which should not exist. (Too localized, dependent on other tags etc). I suggest a system that would allow the deletion of those tags (without having to post a question here on meta for each one). A simple 'flag' option on tags should be good, so that a moderator can sa...

3:02 PM
@LaszloPapp This is like going to the police department and asking them to ban a particular drug. They have the tools to do it, but it's not their job to decide what to ban. The correct channel is to get it brought up for discussion at the government level.
Hmm, maybe not that good an analogy.

those police men are not hostile to say you can try, but we will shot you down in no time.

Q: Make it easer to [suggest] deleting tags that are wrong

yunzenThere is this tag felix on Stack Overflow. It is apparently not a real/good/proper tag but just flattering someone named Felix. But on the tag wiki edit, there is no button to delete it or propose a deletion. Shouldn't we add something like this functionality, so that a peer reviewer with reput...

Everbody quiet. I think @random is trying to tell us something... what is it boy? Did Timmy fall down the well?

what's so hard about just removing the tag from all the questions where it's used and then doing something else for a day then?

Off topic

3:03 PM
@LaszloPapp Yeah, when they say "take it up to your senator", do you perceive that as hostility?

What if it's your senator that's telling you to take it to your senator?

No, but I take it hostility what happened here.
"you can try, but we will shot you down in no time."

@random Then you oscillate.

Is that a quote?

@LaszloPapp "You can try, but you probably will be shot down"

3:04 PM
meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/196135/… -> and that is after having such a hostility like this: -10 for a post how to handle a certain concern

@Manishearth Off topic!

iow, hostility after frustration.

Stop badly paraphrasing and then using it against us

@random Politicians get lonely too, they just want to keep the conversation going.

"I could teach you but I have to charge"

3:05 PM
Hope it goes to -1000 and I can beat some record. :D

The downvotes on meta is how the community tells you they disagree. Incredible that anyone will disagree with you, but hey.

As explained by Andrew on that post: "I think many of the down votes may be due to disagreement that there is anything vitally wrong happening here."

@Oded: you cannot disagree with a question how something should be handled
it is not anyone, 10 within a day.

@LaszloPapp Of course you can disagree with a feature request. Or the premise of a question.

@LaszloPapp Note the word "should". That's a normative statement. Totally up for disagreement.

3:06 PM
show me another post like that the last 24 hours
That post is not offensive at worst, nor spam, nor off-topic, etc
Bart: following the suggestion of moderators is vitally wrong?

@LaszloPapp yes, but people disagree with it

so I should not take their suggestions then?

Nothing wrong about posting something folks disagree with

What? Where do you get that from?

Q: Question askers should get free down votes on answers to their question

MichaelTDigging in the archives depths of MSO while thinking about this, I found: Avoiding downvoting because of loss of points - limited number of free downvotes? Some Ways To Promote Down-Voting This made me think a bit about: how to promote down votes in general how to reduce the pain for users ...

@Manishearth: how can you disagree with "Can you let me know how foo should be handled?"

@LaszloPapp No, but people disagree with it. Hence the downvotes. That's how Meta works.

And what does the community do @Oded? Elect a 15 year old. Insanity!

@Bart Crazy indeed. Electing people on merit. Yeesh.

@LaszloPapp That is not an accurate summary of your question.

3:09 PM
@LaszloPapp you're talking about this one, no? You're badly summarizing yourself now.

It is more like "Look at this terrible user stealing my content and grabbing all rep and glory. How can I stop that?".
And the community simply stated "Ehm, nobody did really steal anything from you"

Manishearth: that -15 suggests something. I did not. I asked how to handle it
Manishearth: so inherently, you can disagree with that one unlike min.
mine*
since mine is more like informative rather than agree/disagree comprehensive question.
I simply cannot understand how asking for information after mods suggestion to go there can go this frustrating.

@LaszloPapp Sure. But the premise of the post was that there was a problem in the first place.

Which, crazily, people didn't agree with.

yeah, let us have it to -1000 to discourage people asking questions.
now these two things really making me to tag qt-serial-port as is.\

3:13 PM
@LaszloPapp If you would have kept it at a neutral "Are users allowed to take my posted content and integrate it into their own answers?", the backlash would have been far less

Feature request: Rename Programmers to Brogrammers

it is pretty useless to bring stuff there.
/me goes ahead and tag

@LaszloPapp Once again, rethink that

Also, do not put things into my mouth
so to speak with your style
I have not ever said any stealing

@Bart - "There's none so blind as those who will not see"

3:15 PM
but you are feel free to point the usage of that or similar word out.

@LaszloPapp No, but the whole post is about how something terrible has been done to you. Which people do not agree with.

@Oded: this is what makes your long contribution to say things like this: "@Bart - "There's none so blind as those who will not see""
and you think that sentence is not hostile?
in this context?

Frankly, I lost interest in responding to your hostility.
Feature request 2: Change badges to cheevos

Not that I have any intention of being dragged into this, but "can we prevent this situation somehow in the future in a reliable way?" is definitively not asking how to handle the situation...it's stating the way to handle the situation is to prevent it, and soliciting ideas on how to make that a reality.
Jan 24 at 21:07, by Tim Stone
: change "badges" to "cheevos" (and then shut down the internet in disgrace)

may I quote any sentence in here in my blog post?

3:17 PM
You have been nothing but aggressive to any suggestion and have turned a blind eye to anything you have been told here.
@LaszloPapp This is a public chat room. Be my guest.

Promise to keep it constructive @LaszloPapp?

Oded's another friendly post, and no hostile by any means.

@LaszloPapp And promise not to put words in our mouths? As you have been doing quite often till now?

@Manishearth No need for that hostility....

@Bart I'm just fed up that he did it thrice and then said chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/transcript/message/1514900#1514900

3:19 PM
@Manishearth Tongue-firmly-in-cheek

Oh ah. My sarcasm detector is oscillating.

@TimStone You know what they say about great minds!

Huge heads @YiJiang?

@Bart Well, yes, that. Huge heads. Hrump...

@Time Stone: not anymore, no, but I do not think a small correction in there will help. Sadly, this is how SO works, if there is at least 3-4 + or -, the rest will go into that direction.

3:25 PM
For posts that have issues, sure. In particular if these have been pointed out and not addressed.

Also, the request has been declined to remove this useless and hostile post:
"Putting smilies into your edited question isn't going to make it a better question. Just sayin'... :o) –"
as if I was putting a smiley in there to get upvote.... wtf.

Need more smilies in the flag

it is like "dude, no matter how you cheat to get rep, we will downvote you"

It's an adequate comment stating that smilies should not really be part of your posts @LaszloPapp.

yes, calling me a cheater to get rep is very much welcomed.
and it is surely for everyone's best.

3:27 PM
Yes, that's what that comment meant.

right, so I am now even called a cheater, frank.
what else?
am I also a murderer?
kidnapper?

If I answer that with a another sarcastic yes....would that also mean you think that's what I'm trying to say?

everyone knows smileys don't work for downvotes. He's just stating the obvious. You gotta grin the downvotes to death.

it is quite strange people guess that about someone he only put smileys into the post because he thinks this is the way to get upvote.
That person should probably use a mirror.
and ask himself whether it is friendly.

maybe he can't
maybe he doesn't show up in mirrors
don't be prejudiced against the undead

3:30 PM
FFS, the comment means you should simply not use smilies. They are unnecessary and don't do anything for your post. They are irrelevant additions.

the smiley is me

@Shog9 Nobody downvotes the Cheshire cat.

if you say, it is not a good addition, you say, I am not welcome.
correction: the smiley is part of me*

Why do you take everything posted as a personal attack against you?

I shall call you Laszlo "Smiley" Papp from now on.

3:32 PM
because I do not see such replies to newcomers anywhere in other communities to say the least, and if you probably ask a few people out there rather than the core here who keeps upvoting each other, you may be surprised compared to your opinion whether that is a really helpful, or offensive and demotivating post. What is the value of telling a people do not smiley because you should not, once or twice in a long post? Nothing, it is only a spam.

Many communities are very hostile to newcomers. And your interpretation of hostile seems to be rather expansive.

@LaszloPapp Were you really told not to smiley or that it wasn't necessary?
Please. Stop. Misquoting.

@Oded: this reminds me a blog post is a good idea to ask outstander opinions about these answers to show a mirror.

You missed one in your last edit, @LaszloPapp

Manishearth: he clearly meant to say, you should not because it is pointless... you will not get upvote, nor avoid downvote.

3:36 PM
@LaszloPapp Note the smiley at the end. He was just trying to be helpful.

meanwhile no one ever is making smileys to make upvotes and downvotes. That is just overly bad faith to think, and hence not welcome in many communities luckily. Here, it is fine and welcome.

@Manishearth I thought that was a sign of hostility?

Are we really debating on how important smileys are to a post?

Manishearth: help with what exactly? To demand his personality on me? How helpful is that?

And how welcome they are?

3:38 PM
after accusing with cheating about up and downvotes?
Manishearth: he seems to debate that which I found pointless, yes.
and I asked for removal, but people seem to think it has a lot of point.

He wasn't. It was a comment that was meant to be funny and a bit helpful (in saying that "if you want to improve your post then that's not the way")

@LaszloPapp after serious consideration by the entire community we have settled upon such standards as no salutations in posts, not thanks, no unnecessary formatting, etc. Smilies are only a part of that. It keeps posts nice and clean.

I do not think SO or meta for that matter should be a place for offending others whether they use a smiley or two in a long post ffs...

He wasn't trying to offend
And if you're getting offended by that, then no wonder you find everything and everyone hostile.
And yes, that ^ is hostility.

Yeah, it is so productive to say, your personality sucks

3:41 PM
Almost as productive as getting offended by anything and everything

leaving that comment in is a way to ensure people are allowed for getting personal
and leave comments all around whether to leave smiley or not.
rather than actually focusing on the important thing ....

Over time I'm starting to appreciate the (community-)moderators more and more.

not doing their job at times? In my book, eliminating personal stuff should be part of the job.

Strange - not all people want to be productive all of the time. And there was nothing personal about the comment. It was about the post, not the poster.

@LaszloPapp not everything is about you or in relation to you

3:45 PM
Heh. What @Bart means that they still do keep personal stuff out despite some people.

Yeah, so telling me that how I should behave is not about me.
because I behave so bad with a smiley.
and it is so much on topic, and not a spam.

14 mins ago, by Oded
Why do you take everything posted as a personal attack against you?

I cannot possibly mention any other way how this could be taken.

Why do you take everything posted as a personal attack against you?

@LaszloPapp I'm stating that I'm appreciative of the moderators in our communities. And perhaps especially so of those who have taken this up as a volunteering position, getting very little in return.
That at no point involves you

3:47 PM
/me is trying to solve stackoverflow.com/questions/18676466/… now
@Bart: I do not think anyone would disappreciate useful voluntary work.
the question is what we see useful.
leaving something in that I consider spam, is obviously not.
that does not however mean, I do not appreciate stuff I agree with that.

spam - I don't think that word means what you think it does.

well, I actually even appreciate they are trying to do their best.
but I do not like bad decisions, like keeping personal stuff raise declined on a technical site.
anyway, I am off.
feel free to downvote all my answers wherever you come across my name. :D
and leave a comment everywhere where I have a smiley.

@LaszloPapp We will, if they are bad, incorrect or harmful. If they are good, helpful and accurate, we will upvote.
Content over people, you see?

or if it contains a smiley. :D
(oops, I pressed again, I blame the keyboard)

4:14 PM
@Oded: I cannot believe content is over people for some people.
see the one arguing about a smiley (someone's personality) and then the moderator even approving that.

4:47 PM
@Oded: would it be simple to implement the functionality for answer votes?
(to everyone: please do not jump on me because I have such an idea, and might have a proposal)

@LaszloPapp What functionality? And it doesn't really matter whether something is simple or not - the community needs to agree that it is a good idea.

@Oded: it is not a good topic to be discussed here.
because that has a forum elsewhere.
and yes, it does matter.
because if the feature cannot be implemented due to lack of resource, it is not going to work in the practice no matter even if there is a modulo approval.
so I am kindly asking: how much effort does that take to implement and whether the site developers have the necessary time required if needed?

5:03 PM
And I am asking you to explain what feature, as I have no idea what you are talking about. Of course if something is not feasible it won't happen regardless of it is desirable, but that's the exact opposite of what I meant.

to vote about selecting an answer after a while. It is a shame there are threads with useful answers, and none is selected due to the careless OP.

What do you mean? Make an answer accepted without the OP being involved? Or changing the accepted answer without the OP being involved?

former for starter.

Such proposals have been made and declined in the past @LaszloPapp

"(to everyone: please do not jump on me because I have such an idea, and might have a proposal)"

5:10 PM
It is not trivial, but not difficult either. Probably a week or so of work.

@Oded: is there enough man power for that if needed?

However - and this is a big however. This kind of thing has been suggested before and shot down.

seriously, I directly asked people.
and yet they do not give a cent

Long story short, votes are the community accept.

keep sending what I asked not to send. I am not sure what I can do more.
/me is leaving in frustration.

We - myself and many others here are trying to give you advice here. If you don't have anything new to bring to the discussion, the community will downvote.

@LaszloPapp You are free to propose this. All we're saying is, keep the history in mind. And integrate that into your new request if you have one.

We're not jumping on you. We thought you may want to see the reasons it was declined in the past

5:12 PM
The community has long decided that the community votes and that the OP accepts what they feel helped them most.

And write the feature request with that in mind.

Do not mistake advice for "jumping on you"
The simple fact - if you post something that has been asked for before, a few times, and don't mention that you have read these suggestions and explain what makes your suggest different, the community will be the one feeling disrespected.

A: Pass a QImage object between class methods

Laszlo PappWelcome to SO! First of all, it is better if you use the term methods rather than functions because these are class members, and you will find most people calling these methods out there. Namely, these are members of your Image class. You can use a member variable for it inside the Image class ...

It has become a Community Wiki
If you see the revision history you will note it says: made Community Wiki by Laszlo Papp editing at least 10 times
Flag for moderator attention and point that out. They will most likely reverse it.

well, yes because the user kept changing the requirements.
and I had to put even the simplest things into the reply.
I have spent a day with him.

Yep, so no problem. Flag and it will be reversed

flagging does not work in my experience.

Not flagging will certainly not work

7:02 PM
reviewers like declining stuff in a way that I do not like.

Do as you please. You'll have to flag to bring it to their attention. I'm telling you they'll be likely to reverse it. Do with that information what you want.

re: above, I do not think anything new is necessarily required. Community keeps changing, different priorities keep coming up, new people join with different opinion. Old people leave with their opinion, etc
revisiting decisions is a natural way to keep the operation of the site for the community in question, and not for the people who are not available anymore, etc. It is not like the world is not changing.
In fact, downvoting ony because something has been already discussed is IMHO unacceptable.

Then you'd have to offer a bounty on the older question to bring it to the attention of the community once again. Asking the same thing again will see it closed as a duplicate.

no, Q/A is not a forum
with long discussions. Threads should be kept short.

Your point being?

7:08 PM
see above.

Meh, nevermind.

I will not mind.

@LaszloPapp CW removed. Are all those comments on your answer still relevant or can they be purged?

I still have no +15

It usually takes some time (same with deleting posts that had votes)

7:14 PM
ThiefMaster: also, please do not edit the post in the wrong way.
now it is invisible on my laptop as a whole. I directly put it as it was....

Uh, that sounds like something on your laptop is very broken.
Quote formatting for a commandline string or shell output is usually a bad idea; code formatting is more appropriate. Same applies to using individual backticked lines instead of a code block.

It is my answer.
you are free to put your answer in there.
but please do not edit my answer as I did not intend.
or leave a comment next time.

...

and it will be considered.
now, I need to worry if my past answers had been edited.
I would need to check a bunch of answers to make sure .... :/

You get a notification when someone edits a post of yours

7:18 PM
yes, but I do not check every edit ....
I trusted people....

If you do not like the long commandline to show up as a single line (I agree, it's not very pretty) why not split it in multiple lines- either separate commands or with a backslash at the end of each line so it's still pasted a as single command when executed in a shell.

there is not much I dislike more than miles long lines fully invisible.
I need to keep fixing those in others' comment as well. It is very annoying.
It makes the code reading experience very hard, and I personally lose my motivation to help the person.

Then please use multiple commands and backslashes instead of the incorrect formatting.

no, that is fine.
backslash is ugly.

Most important: When you use quote formatting it WILL break if you need to use e.g. a backtick in one of your commands.

7:21 PM
and could greatly break for copy/paste.

People shouldn't copy&paste stuff into a shell anyway.

and to the cleanup question: no, please do NOT remove the comments until the +15 comes back.
I will flag them when I feel it is the time.

How exactly is the rep related to that?

7:24 PM
how exactly is Mr. Hocevar's post related to that?
copy/paste works fine here. I cannot possibly imagine a situation where this very command would break, and now after the revert, it is even readable.

No, how is the 15 rep related to cleaning up possibly obsolete comments.
The linked post was the reason for "People shouldn't copy&paste stuff into a shell anyway"

No, I meant why paste here something irrelevant?
meh
stereotype and theory without any practice....
Honestly, this is now readable and copy/pasteable. Everything else would be a compromise.
is there a thread for improving the response time for rep updates?
I personally cannot imagine that why it would take more than 10-20 minutes once the action is done.
it is basically just a simple check if it is answered, and then a minor adjustment.
is it quicker if the OP re-marks it?

Don't know if a rep recalc still triggers anything ( stackoverflow.com/reputation see the button at the bottom ) but the developers optimize the heck out of the site. Running certain things just every so often is more than likely part of that.

@LaszloPapp At least for deletions it usually happened within about 5 minutes. But yeah, try a manual rep recalc

well, it is still not here, and you can check when you reverted.
it is dubious whether it comes back at all for me.
I mean it must be a bug if it does not come back in 20 minutes, but later it does.
is there an existing thread for bringing this annoyance up on Meta?
/me is about to remove that answer altogether

7:40 PM
wth, you are going to remove a perfectly fine answer because of 15 rep?

yes
if the site is unfair to me, I will not be fair to it either.

Do I really need to lock your answer to prevent that?

I do not even understand how you can have such concerns.

You do realize you'll also lose any rep you've gained from it previously, right?

I do not care
fairness is more important here.
the site is unfair
so I am in no position to be fair to it.
I have spent almost a full day with the user with continuously changing stuff.... he did not even understand the very basics, I had to write everything done, even that 1+1=2
and so's gratitude, screw up, you do not get what others do.
s/done/down/
ThiefMaster: how do you know it is "perfectly fine"? If you do know, where is your upvote?
there must be something off in that scenario....

7:47 PM
Maybe I already used all my votes for today?

5 votes for today ....
something is fishy here in your saying ....
1) I do not say "perfectly fine" if I cannot be sure
2) If I am sure, I upvote.

Maybe. Actually I simply didn't think about voting when I initially just went to the answer to remove CW. The edit was mainly because I noticed odd formatting. I didn't actually test the code or check if it's a "good" answer. But based on your behavior I assumed it's probably a good answer.

please be careful for saying "perfectly fine" then next time.
be sure before claiming, do not guess, do not assume.
@Oded: is this lost rep a known bug?
anyone: is there a bugreport for it on SO's meta?
Also, is there a way for claiming lost rep by the system?

This is a chat, not some pre-election talk show for politicians where every single details matters.

@LaszloPapp It is not a bug. Reputation gains during CW belong to the Community user - any reputation gained when not CW belongs to the poster. This is by design.

7:54 PM
@LaszloPapp So I take your suggestion exactly as what it is - a suggestion - and ignore it.

so, I cannot get the deserved rep?

@ThiefMaster Regular users can't delete their answer if it has been accepted.

how can I get the deserved rep?

Ah right, forgot about that.

I have worked almost a day with this guy
/me will ask the OP to re-select

7:55 PM
The user could unaccept and re-accept it. But if you are going to ask him to do so in a comment do it in a friendly way explaining why and don't harass him to toggle it just so you get your rep.

What he said ^^^^

ThiefMaster: be gentle.
ThiefMaster: assume good faith.
ThiefMaster: do not treat someone like an unhonest, unreasonable person.
so AGAIN: is there a thread about lost rep on META?

I don't know you so I can only judge you from your behavior in chat earlier today.

Discussing the "design" and then in a separate thread how to claim lost rep back?
ThiefMaster: be gentle

Probably not. "Accidental" CW combined with the answer being accepted while the post is CW most likely does not happen very often. And I guess most people don't care enough about 15 rep to spend time writing a meta post.

7:58 PM
Don't get so focused on rep. It is much better to focus on helping people, without expecting anything in return.

@Oded perhaps provide your input here: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/188522/…

SO is full of crap

Actually, in the time it takes to write that post you could probably answer some [jquery] or [php] questions and easily get 100+ rep

@LaszloPapp AGAIN? You never did ask for a thread.

Q: My answer was accepted, but I did not gain reputation from it. Why?

@LaszloPapp be gentle.

One of the reason here is to get enough privilege to help with cleaning up the massive crap
while providing top quality answers.

We certainly could use all the help we could get.

for that mission, reps are extremely important

Then do so by volume. Follow Jon Skeet's example

But focusing on it misses the point.
