@TimStone One of the rewards for being a truly dedicated Meta Stack Exchange user is eligibility for occasional, random deals on bulk purchases of business cards, bumper stickers and other merchandise.

Your site on the homepage of Reddit: Your site down. Obama on the homepage of Reddit: Reddit down.
lol

@PopularDemand I do have almost enough Stack Exchange swag to start my own shop now, thanks to those fantastic deals. I'm apparently out of generic Stack Exchange t-shirts though.

Heh, I should ask that company to produce some MSO stickers for me, since I wasn't a loser power user here early enough to get one of the official batch.

Can no @@devs answer this?

Q: How do I view spoilers on an iPad?

amanaP lanaC A nalP A naM AI am on this question on my iPad: Is there an explanation for Amy Pond's selective remembering of people? How do I view the spoilers on the question?? There is no way for me to "hover over" So now I am at a loss.... How do I see the whole question now? Tapping or sliding does not seem ...

7:10 PM
@Purmou I have no idea who this guy is, or even how to look him up. Is there a knowyourmeme entry or some other reference you can provide for him?

@PopularDemand I'd start producing cheap knock-offs from China, but I'm afraid of Abby beating me up

@PopularDemand thats a well known one

@pop scumbag steve

@TimStone On the other hand, your commute might improve.

7:12 PM
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA tapping works on Chrome for iOS

Ahh lememe
@Purmou im not in chrome...

it's free. :P

@Purmou haha it is stinky. I just trying it in iOs chome. it works, but it is glitchy

@PopularDemand I think this one went over my head. I haven't had much caffeine today, though.

it actually also works with atomic lite and ilunascape

7:16 PM
Why was this reopened?

Q: Is < faster than <=?

Viniyo ShoutaI'm reading a book where the author says that if( a < 901 ) is faster than if( a <= 900 ). Not exactly as this simple example, but slightly performance changes on loop complex code. I suppose this has to do something with ASM in case it's even true. Thank you for checking out the question....

@TimStone I just remember you were complaining a while ago about getting in and out of Philly during rush hour. Possibly during a conversation about the Schuylkill Expressway; not sure about that though.

Oh, I follow now
And yeah, I was.
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Hmm...

@TimStone exactly

um
works for me on safari
8D

@Purmou not for me. on iPad2 iOs 5

7:22 PM
ios 5?

hm, 5.1.1
for me, i mean

o idk my exact # lol
I just know it doesnt work.
when I try tapping multiple times, it zooms in
and out

well, tapping works fine for me

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA I had downvoted you originally because it was working fine for me and I thought you should just use mobile, but now I can reproduce, so...

7:23 PM
idk.... maybe i did not have a good tap finger teacher...
@TimStone I explicitly said "iPad"
That is even the title of the question!
lol

what version are you guys on?
@TimStone what's your exact version #?

@TimStone ha nice edit :-P

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA I misremembered, I just thought you should use mobile regardless.

@TimStone on an iPad? why?

mine went to regular by default...on all browsers

7:25 PM
also why should that be grounds to downvote? lol
I can use whatever version I want on a big screen :-)

I don't think that the iPad went to the non-mobile version at that point, did it?
So you were complaining about something not working that was both working for other people and wasn't the default.

what do you mean?

Anyway, you got your up vote now, shh :P

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA probably due a satanic bug since the most voted answer has 666 score

@TimStone ummm of course it did.... It always went to the full version by default
and u can always swicth with the link on the bottom
@ajax333221 lol idk

7:29 PM
if anyone cares, it also works on Facebook's built in browser

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA I didn't, but it was changed long before your question. I guess the reason only was that it was working fine for me, then.

@TimStone possibly..

Oh
I can't reproduce on Sci-Fi

@TimStone o rly?

is anyone listening? I can't reproduce anywhere.

7:31 PM
@TimStone nope still issuey on scifi.se for me
i even cleared all ipad cookies

Q: What caused the Melding Plague in Alastair Reynolds Revelation Space universe?

RustyI'm looking for information on the origins/causes of the Melding Plague. Is the specific cause in the books (and I just missed it) ? Is there any other information from Reynolds (interviews, short-stories, etc) ? Any sources out on the web my searches might have missed ?

(specifically that question)

@TimStone nope...
Where do u tap?
in the middle?

Doesn't seem to matter

@TimStone odd...
how do u do a hard refresh in iOs safari? or does that not exist?

nonexistent

7:35 PM
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Figured it out

i still don't see why you don't use chrome...

(well, sort of)
Will look more in a second

@TimStone ok now it works for me
I cleared all cookies and website data
and it works fine
I think I had old js cached somewhere on the iPad

it's not JS though, it's CSS

7:36 PM
yep... I can now click on spoilers
lol ok. I had old css then :-P @Purmou

lol. i'm gonna edit my answer to say clear your cookies and data cause i want that bounty

@TimStone you could add my fix as an answer.
lol
no bounty for u!
twill go nowhere

i want to cast close votes! D:

sorry I figured it out on my own

It doesn't work for me only if I'm logged in.

7:38 PM
lol. well that's 300 points gone

@TimStone wait rly?
let me log in on the iPad

let me test

maybe thats it

ahhhh crap
that's gotta be cookies too

wtf...
@TimStone that seems to be it

7:39 PM
I wasn't logged in on Sci-Fi originally, and it worked. Logged in, it broke. Logged out, it worked. Logged in, it broke.

let me try chrome

Yeah, let me see what the problem might be...

fails on chrome

7:41 PM
but what could happen when you log in?

@Purmou no frelling idea
@Purmou idk is it the same issue on those other browsers when u are logged in?

fails on chrome

Yup same issue on chrome

let me try the others
fails on atomic lite

ok. so logging in is the issue.
@Purmou you should probably remove your answer as it is not correct

7:46 PM
well what's not correct about it? lol it lists browsers where it works
brb

@Purmou but it doesnt work there. u just said so :-P and I just tested it

Hmm

Ah...interesting.

Found out?

Yeah, I know what causes it to work, but I'm not sure why.

7:51 PM
Well what is it? Maybe we can figure it out
It definitely has to do with stylesheets
hm
that's weird
there's no :hover declaration anymore

idk...
What is wierd?
o rly?
I see it there.

it's definitely there in the css
but inspect element isn't showing it...
.spoiler:hover *{color:black;}.spoiler:hover * a{color:#6c0000;border-color:black;}

8:07 PM
no freaking idea
do views fail here for you guys too?

What do you mean by fail?
Oh
I already fixed that, no worries.

Q: View counts on Data Explorer overflow

HodofHodApparently, the view counts on Data Explorer don't abbreviate to 12k (etc.) like other sites, and this, of course, causes problems: As you can clearly* see, the view count has overflown the gray background box. *For some values of clearly.

@TimStone see my update. there is a js event discrepency between being logged in and out

Yeah, I just don't get what difference it causes.

Well there is an extra event on the mouse over and mouseout on the question when you are logged out.

i need an ipad web inspector

8:20 PM
@Purmou there is one natively.... Just goto settings safari

no, there is only a debug console

let me go steal the iapd from my mom
and then i'll add an ontouchstart event...
a hack of sorts

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Yeah, there's supposed to be.

@TimStone o rly?
but maybe that's the issue...
@TimStone why is there an extra event?

8:25 PM
For the "Was this useful to you?" controls.
They only appear when you hover over the post.

@TimStone that event should be on the question. not on the spoiler.

it is on the question, but is somehow affecting the spoiler
because the spoiler is in the question, you see?

@Purmou no...
There is a delegated event to the spoiler from the question.

when you're logged out, you mean?

@Purmou yes. but not when logged in.

8:28 PM
when logged in, i see a mouseover listener for body.question-page

@Purmou but nothing for the spoiler
see the image!

i saw it
but it shouldn't require an event listener, it's plain css
.spoiler:hover
something is interfering with that when you're logged in
this debugger i got sucks

@Purmou iPad doesn't support :hover....
@Purmou eh?

no, :hover is instead triggered onclick

@Purmou not from what I have seen. ^
what I read on the internet is always true.

8:32 PM
go to this site on iPad: shounig.com
it's a mobile version of my site, still has :hover
on the nav I mean

@leemes !!! Everything I read on the internet is most definitely true!!Neal Aug 27 at 14:35

if you click one of the nav items, the :hover animation plays

internet is going slow on my iPad
@Purmou no animation. just clicks and foes to the link
its a mobile site

no, see how it gets a box shadow and gets darker?
that's the intended hover effect
it changes color and the shadow is added before the page reloads
trust me

@Purmou no. I don't see that.

8:35 PM
...

do you need me to record a video?
and play it back in slow motion?

@Purmou on ur moms iPad?
sure.

yes

8:36 PM
damn it

she needs it now
lol

excuses excuses

meanwhile let me find a screen recorder app

@Lix nope. see the whole discussion here on chat.

Lix
My first comment there still stands ;)

8:52 PM
@Lix no way jose. Well I have not been able to test in android since I do not have an android device
If you have one, test away :-)

10:21 PM
huh? "moving?"

NOOOOO

what does that even mean?

@Lix: Ugh, that font on the right is horrible.

'tis moving down the street to another server (:

Remember like a week ago when the sites randomly went into maintenance mode without any notification prior?
It's chat's turn

10:22 PM
oh, so this is that again, but this time with a nifty notification to go with it? :P

@animuson that was not random. (:

ohhh, no, i was remembering when the chats went offline randomly without notice about a week ago

That wasn't long...

Lix
10:47 PM
o_O
@thi - its just the screen shot that compressed it. In the browser it looks "fine"

10:57 PM
Is it bad practice to add display:none to things you want to get rid of instead of removing them from your html? :P

Yes. CSS doesn't change the meaning of the page.

I know. It just makes me sad to have to remove an <h1> in 800 different places.

800? o.o
Why are you removing all the <h1>s?

@mootinator Wouldn't it be easier to bulk-remove the <h1> tags and reinsert in the three places they belong?

@DanielFischer Don't be using your newfangled common sense with me!

11:11 PM
common?

Hardly

11:41 PM
Today I learned that StackOverflow has an age limit.
And, in related news, I feel like a jerk because I reported an underage account for serial upvoting and the kid was suspended.

@Mannimarco yup, do you know why?
I was part of the group that pushed for that, in the spirit of full disclosure

@jco
woops i can't use chat well

use tab completion

@jcolebrand No idea, but I am curious
Yeah, haha

The very last line I quoted is the reason for the restriction
And since the SE team definitively operates out of the US, they abide by US laws.

11:54 PM
Ah, okay.

So those are the legal ramifications
Now to the sociological ramifications:

Billy Mays: But wait, there's more!

This network is intended to be a professional quality Question and Answer network. To that end, they encourage professional behavior on the front facing sites. While meta's get a little slack, and Meta Stack Overflow moreso, the use of things such as closing, editing, and moderator intervention are given with the intent of creating a self-policing professionally oriented site.
Children under the age of 13, while often intelligent, do not, by definition, qualify as professionals.

Yeah, that makes sense.

So, in the interest of protecting the network, complying with the COPPA, and in the interest of avoiding pointless arguing with a 12 year old, children under the age of 15 are discouraged from using the site. Notice I personally, not SE, jumped to 15.
13 and 14 year olds are encouraged to use the network to explore and learn, but they are still in their formative years and don't always understand the mob mentality, and are very emotionally driven (we've all been children, we all understand)
There are moderators under the age of 21, and I believe our youngest is in the age bracket category that starts with a 1, but I can't recall whom, and wouldn't bring attention to anyone anyways
Just stating that it's not like we discourage teenagers, hell, Arqade thrives off of them.
