Did they swoop in firing lasers all "pew pew!" like?

2 hours later…
1:46 AM
hey guys

2:42 AM
@TimStone Exactly.

2 hours later…
5:07 AM
Hmm apparently my chat died out 7-9 hours ago o.o

@animuson did you get R&C in the mail?

5:24 AM
@Purmou Yeah, I'm playing it now

5:40 AM
@PopularDemand thanks for wasting time.
I really don't know that asking a problem is waste of time.

Jin deleted something? I've never seen his name on anything before. o.o

Well he is a mod, technically speaking

2 hours later…
7:41 AM
is anyone else still intermittently getting the bug where the edit toolbar and preview are missing? ctrl+f5 isn't fixing it for me over on travel.SE right now

@hippietrail What browser? Do you have any errors in your console?

windows 7 32 bit latest chrome stable. at least one error ...
Uncaught TypeError: Object [object Object] has no method 'TextAreaResizer' at wmd.js:81
i get it on just about every site but only sometimes... and i don't want to purge my whole browser cache because of some stuff i'm working on sorry \-:

weird, textarearesize is defined within wmd.js
try going to cdn.sstatic.net/js/wmd.js?v=93b92575f8bc and hitting ctrl-f5 twice
then try again

ok ...
still failing. maybe i should've mentioned the two failed resource loads before that error, both i assume due to adblock/ghostery:
> Failed to load resource `http://www.google-analytics.com/ga.js`
> Failed to load resource `http://edge.quantserve.com/quant.js`

that's okay, those are just for analytics
if they don't load, that shouldn't impact the site

7:53 AM
yeah that's what i thought

if you scroll to the bottom of cdn.sstatic.net/js/wmd.js?v=93b92575f8bc, can you copy/paste the last line or so here?

does the cdn have multiple servers? i was thinking it works or not depending on which one i hit on a given day+site combo

where are you located?

@Purmou: How far have you gotten?

switching between the first one and going commando

7:55 AM
Pfft have you finished the first? lol

on going commando, we're on barlow
we were out all day, so couldn't get too much done

i'm in romania actually walking distance to the bulgarian border
> $("#upload-message").css({color:"red",fontWeight:"bold"}).show().text(e)};return!0});q.cent‌er();$("body").keydown(t);$("#filename-input").focus()},0);return!0}}}();

in that case you should be hitting amsterdam, just like me. You can check here: debug-02.netdna-cdn.com

@hippietrail that looks correct; so much for my theory that your browser is getting only half a file for some reason
any userscripts / extensions installed?

7:58 AM
a few, none especially for SE, let me list them...

what do you get when you put $.fn.TextAreaResizer into the JavaScript console e.g. on travel.stackexchange.com/questions/ask?

@balpha: undefined

what about just $

by the way this is all from the direct edit URL to avoid any layer of strange added by the ajax editing magick
function (a,b){return new e.fn.init(a,b,h)}

$.fn.charCounter

8:04 AM
> `function (a){return this.each(function(){var c=a.target?$(a.target):$(this).parents("form").find("span.text-counter"),f=this;$(this).bind("blur focus keyup paste",e.DelayedReaction(function(){var d=a.min,g=a.max,e=a.setIsValid||
function(){},j=f.value?f.value.replace(/\r\n/g,"\n").length:0,k=j>0.8*g?"supernova":j>0.6*g?"hot":j>0.4*g?"warm":"cool",h="";0==j?(h="enter at least "+d+" characters",e(!1)):j<d?(h=d-j+" more to go...",e(!1)):(h=g-j+" character"+(1!=g-j?"s":"")+" left",e(j<=g));c.text(h);c.hasClass(k)||c.removeClass("supernova hot warm cool").addClass(k)},100,{sliding:!0}).trigge

so weird...
try jQuery === $

false!

aha!
there we go
one of your extensions must be overwriting jQuery in a way

i have a "greasemonkey" script of my own that i think is loaded for every page
yep that fixed it

does your greasemonkey script include jQuery?

8:11 AM
i thought i'd accesed jquery the recommended way ...
it does yeah

with noConflict?

i thought so but maybe i'm wrong

use noConflict(true)
otherwise it will reset $ but not jQuery
which will cause exactly what we're seeing here

yeah i do use noconflict
ah i just have this though: jQuery.noConflict();

yeah, if you add the (true) parameter it should fix it

8:15 AM
actually it still breaks even with true

uh oh!

i could've made that user script in pure js but i'm doing everything with jquery lately to force myself to learn it
i'm using this little framework to load js libs in chrome user scripts:

hmm, that looks prone to timing issues even if you use noConflict
anything the stack exchange javascript does between that new jQuery being loaded and jQuery-UI being loaded will use the new jQuery

i just realized i didn't update my user script properly and probably got the old version again ...
working happily now

cool

8:25 AM
i think this is the SO post that lead me to that script if you want to comment on it:
0
Q: Why does this reach main() yet jQuery is still undefined?

BrianFreudI'm trying to modify the various loaders out there so multiple scripts can be handled before the main function is called. This should load jQuery, then jQueryUI, and then call main() to actually start the userscript. However, it does loop through, but when it gets to main(), I get a console err...

@balpha: you're not gonna believe this: now that i've fixed that i can't seem to click on the little "Stack<b>Exchange</b>" in the top left that leads to the inbox etc!
ah well i don't think i need that user script any more. gone for now. thanks for your help @balpha

8:42 AM
Someone wanna help me test something? xP

why the hell does SELECT UserId FROM Badges WHERE Id=38 not work in the data explorer?
nevermind

@hippietrail sure

@balpha is it possible to use the data explorer to search one table with the results of another one?

not sure I understand, can you give a concrete example?

@balpha: If you open a post, then open the same post in another window, then edit the post from one of those windows, is it not supposed to give you the "an edit has been made" bar?

8:48 AM
search badges for users with a specific badge (selecting only UserId), then search each of those UserId's in Users for those who have 1 rep
@balpha got this so far
i want to find out which of those users have 1 rep

wow, that makes so little sense to me XD
thanks!

Q: Can we actually discourage downvotes?

PurmouBefore you disagree with me with a downvote, or just want to be funny, please hear me out. From the "Vote Down" privilege page: The upvote privilege comes first because that's what you should focus on: pushing great content to the top. Downvoting should be reserved for extreme cases. It's no...

i will go to sleep to drive my own attention away from the upcoming barrage of downvotes

9:43 AM
@animuson god what is it for you, like 4:40? :P

4 hours later…
2:01 PM
But...now I'll have to continue my internal monologue...internally! gasps

2:27 PM
So this is where all the noise is coming from...

3:14 PM
My new work lets me work from home on Wednesdays \o/
is more excited about this than is probably warranted

3:44 PM
Wednesdays only? Must be new policy.
I'm hoping one day, standard minimum will be only 2 days in-office.
No need to frivolously meet.

Indeed, that would be nice. All of my jobs previous to this were 100% in-office, so I'll take what I can get =)

I get Wednesday and Tuesday. I used to get every day, though, so meh.

Ah, that's got to be tough to go back to.

Yeah....yeah. sighs

Oh man, my current job...if I had to sit in an office with my coworkers... shudder q:

3:56 PM
Hahah :P
That's true, you'd have to watch your back around them...some of them are dangerous.

Only some of them?

Surely they can't all be as devious as you. Some of them have to be pretty harmless, right?

Well, a few of them seem harmless enough.
The others either have heavy weaponry, packs of wild chaos monkeys, or have tried to kill me with a quadrocopter.
On a related note, is that a massive jar of Sour Patch Kids?

4:13 PM
Hahaha, it certainly looks like it.

hooooooly
6 hours and 27 downvotes! that's a new meta record!
@TimStone: what's this comment saying?

5:01 PM
@Purmou Doubtful. And at least you're not a troll.

@jcolebrand I don't know whether to be flattered or annoyed ;)

@RobinHood That's a false argument, and you know it. I'm always happy to help people here, and I always give the benefit of the doubt. But your name comes up in a significant number of complaints about bad users. I've even seen questionable posts by you myself. As I once told someone else on Meta, the benefit of the doubt only lasts until there is no more doubt.

Now, since I'm not a mod, I have the luxury of being able to ignore users, and I'm going to take advantage of it. There's no need for you to waste any more of your time on me.

@PopularDemand Technically, since the Q was closed by a mod, @ama should ask on Meta proper, or should flag the Q. Because that would've been the time to delete it.
On top of that, Neal hasn't tried to edit the Answer, and I'm curious if he's downvoted it for being a bad answer (community moderation)

5:15 PM
@jcolebrand I flagged and voted to delete. dont think I need to bring up on meta. everone knows what happens when I do something like that.

@jcolebrand That wasn't a reply to the user you think it was a reply to.

@jcolebrand lol I am Neal

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA you really don't think I know that.
@PopularDemand yes it was, you said "since I'm not a mod" so I was extending your point.

@jcolebrand I dont think you know that I know that you know that.

Oh, I do tho

@jcolebrand What are you talking about? That message was at RobinHood, not amana&c.

@jcolebrand He was saying you replied to him as if he was replying to Neal, which he wasn't. :P

@PopularDemand haha I realized that. your message just happened to be at a quite inopportune time lol

@PopularDemand , oh, well use reply. You and @TimStone are right. My apologies

@jcolebrand :1075524?

5:19 PM
apparently a comma after the number breaks? has it always done that?

@jcolebrand yea.... it is annoying. anything after the messageID breaks it....

Interesting.

keep it up and find your messages in the bin
you can play with that in the sandbox, where it's been beaten to death

Just interesting that we can recurse our own chat messages.

shakes his fist at the blank square on his display.

@Purmou: I finally went to sleep around 5am...

5:33 PM
@PopularDemand being fixed as we speak (:

Uh oh, someone broke all the things.

Thankfully nothing I can be blamed for. Let's turn to the wheel for guidance.
Ah, apparently it's the entire team's fault.

I rolled an Ivo Wetzel. Is that an automatic re-roll?

@TimStone lies!

@jadarnel27 I kept re-rolling until it stopped trying to say it was my fault, since we already ruled that out.
Clearly the wheel needs calibration.

5:36 PM
Indeed. They probably broke that, too.
When they broke all the other things.

Of course.

So many closed questions o.o

Q: Update tags list asynchronously on question edit

abatishchevCurrently when you edit a question and change tags, the tags list to the right doesn't become synchronized. At least on SO using FF10. So only page reload updates the list. Please fix that.

that's more a bug than feature request though

@jcolebrand Hahah, I suppose that works

5:43 PM
@jcolebrand So that's what he's been spending all that not-in-the-Tavern time on.

Stack Exchange has a rumor mill?

When you're in the top 100 visited sites on the internet, there's lots of remora

6:30 PM
Also, nerds.

I saw a license plate yesterday that said "OMG HAX"
It was great. I was driving, or I would have taken a picture.
@PopularDemand Maybe casperOne will come by and mass-retag all of the untagged posts with "web-development" or something =P

I think someone should at least go by and mass-retag untagged posts with

I want to troll edit the untagged tag wiki to add a picture of a unicorn.

> These tags are often useless. They are sometimes misspellings of other tags that are already here, sometimes they are talking about a very specific unpopular product. Unpopular means the opposite of one of these: (picutre of a unicorn)

Oh, that's pretty nifty.

is there really no evidence here?

We were unable to provide an appropriate error message for the problem you are experiencing because the error message specified '404' was not found.
Yay for recursive errors!

@PopularDemand Lol, I meant a new record for me

that's quite funny. words aren't tangible anyways.

I should really add to the list of on-topic tags for this room, apparently.

7:41 PM
I prefer the crux of my rants to be feasible.
That's hardly pedantry ;)

"normals" don't ask if words are tangible

Are synonyms fungible?
Joshes are fairly fungible, I think.

@ircmaxell I should've mentioned this earlier, but I'm interested in reading that. I'd appreciate it if you'd drop a note (or link) here when you post that article.

@mootinator I strongly disagree with that!

@jadarnel27 Which one are you again?
(I always confuse my brother-in-law with my 9 year old cousin too, it's tough for Joshes out there.)

8:01 PM
Quick question because I don't want to actually make a post for it
If I flag someone for operating a sock puppet, the flag is deemed helpful, but a week later nothing has been done about it, is there a way I can get an explanation for it?

You'd have to have a way to get in touch with the specific moderator who handled your flag. The only way I can think of for doing that would be to post on Meta -- and even then, it depends on that mod noticing the post and remembering the flag -- but calling out specific users by name is discouraged, and I can't think of a way to write a Meta post about that situation without calling out the suspected sock.

So... I can't do anything?

As a side note, mods are encouraged to dismiss flags as helpful whenever they believe they were cast in good faith, regardless of whether they require action.

Understood, but I'd prefer to hear why there wasn't any action. The reputation gains are ridiculously suspicious from my viewpoint, but I can't see who the upvotes came from so I can't be certain about anything.

Yeah, I understand, and sympathize... there's really no good solution for someone in your position. Trying your luck on the Meta post is all I can think of.
If it's on a site that has a "talk to a mod" room in chat, you could try there....

8:12 PM
@Mannimarco what site was it?

Stackoverflow

Ah, then the problem is that there are literally hundreds of flags a day
There's also ... 12? moderators on SO, plus the staff.
So a) there's no telling who specifically checked to see if it as a sock, b) they are REALLY good at spotting socks over there, and c) sometimes things get overlooked.

lol, regardless of any of the information that's been said, just post it on meta

And a week ago is a long time to ask on following up on a sock flag. I think that your best course of action at this point is to just let it go, unless you're certain that it's someone being entirely egregious with the network, and the mods missed it. In which case, send an email to community@stackexchange.com and spell out a case for it.
@Purmou Eh, we don't really encourage challenging other users as sockmasters, and if he flagged it, the mods would've looked at it.
I was going to ask in the modroom if it was any site BUT Stack Overflow

it's been done before though...and I don't think it's particularly frowned upon if you're simply voicing concern
or asking to be sure

8:16 PM
Summer of love. Let's keep the inter-user contention to as low as reasonable ;-)
Otherwise I agree with what you're saying

fair point
but this summer of love thing is really not going well...my downvote suggestion wasn't received well at all despite the fact that it aims to improve the new user experience

Hehe is my new suggestion that bad?

all downvote suggestions are downvoted
nature of the beast? Irony? Sarcasm?
Meta.

The reason I'm pushing so hard on it is because I spent a lot of time answering questions for a new, fairly unpopular tag, and somehow this guys questions for the same tag are always upvoted so it's pretty hard to compete.

8:18 PM
And thanks, @jcolebrand, I'll try sending an e-mail.

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA you didn't give a reason for it.
yes, it would be pretty, and it would be nice, but what does it help improve that you can't get by going two more clicks to the network profile?
Personally I only want it for network velocity, in comparison to my other accounts

@jcolebrand umm so that way we have a visual representation of a user's reputation over time

Yes, you have one, on the network

Ooh, I just thought of a badge proposal which would generate a lot of downvotes.

@mootinator ?

8:20 PM
@jcolebrand that's the problem! i can't even tell if they're joke downvotes or serious disagreements, lol

@jcolebrand The Synonimizer bronze badge should be silver or gold because only 381 people have it. LET THE GAMES BEGIN.

@amanap I like that, but only if it's an option

@Purmou yea. that is what I am suggesting
guess people just don't like graphs lol
I am sure if I posted as another user it would not get as harsh treatment :-P

i legitimately hate the meta bias
but alas

I find a bunch of random spikes less interesting than how much the density of spikes over time contributed to my overall reputation. Jeff's opinion is for suckers. — mootinator 27 secs ago
love it
but no upvote love? :-P

8:26 PM
it's the only way to suggest things and HOPE they have a chance of getting accepted, lol

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA Yeah yeah :P

Anonymous
Sigh. amanaP posts another suggestion that I sort-of like, thus ensuring that it will never be implemented.

@TheElementofMagic Upvote it. then it will get heard. :-D
So I was right why its is mostly getting downvoted
I should create a sock puppet for these posts....

Er...

What else is there to do? anything I post as a question seems to become quite bias towards me....
If I had posted this this year it would have been majorly downvoted.

8:33 PM
i feel the same way
LOL. the argument there would probably be "Stack overflow was the first in the original trilogy, so it is correct. DECLINED"

lol yea

Jeff Wrote that. Jeff does not make mistakes. DECLINED.

Q: Should others downvote my posts for "grammatical" reasons?

amanaP lanaC A nalP A naM ASomeone decided to start downvoting my answers due to them being too bulletin boardlike (not good grammar and capitalization) Is there a way to report those users? And if so, what can i do about it? edit Here is one example

your first post
mass downvoted
i honestly don't see why, though
random ass downvotes when you're just asking a question...

@Purmou haha then I thought I "learned" but then PFFFFFFFT

8:36 PM
"I DISAGREE WITH THIS QUESTION. NO"

Because the premise

Followed by a highly upvoted post of someone else pointing out a Jeff related leap year mistake.

@Purmou that is a valid downvote reason on meta

how can you even disagree with a question? XD

This one went over well :-)

Q: Why were historically significant questions deleted?

amanaP lanaC A nalP A naM AFor example: This question: What are some funny loading statements to keep users amused? used to have this notice on top: But since then it has been deleted on November 9th. I have seen this with a few of the historically significant questions like What is the best comment in source code you ...

8:37 PM
If you had said "Should others not un-downvote my posts for "grammatical" reasons?" everyone would have left it alone, because they wouldn't be able to figure out whether they agree or not.

But then the Mods got mad. so then came the string DVs :-P
@mootinator I agree to disagree about agreeing.

holy poop

Q: Deleted posts should not influence reputation

GillesA major change was suddenly introduced in the way reputation is calculated yesterday: if you’ve contributed something worthwhile to the site, you should keep the reputation for that even if it eventually gets deleted. “Worthwhile” here is defined as, A score of 3 or greater Visible ...

Like honestly

Aaaand that confirms my "Obama is an alien" theory.

8:39 PM
the only reason this isn't in the negatives is because Gilles posted it

Because it takes one to not throw up at the sight of Reddit.

@Purmou it has -35

@amanap yeah, i know, but more upvotes
whereas my recent suggestion has 5 upvotes and over 25 down
it has everything to do with the fact that people just don'w care for changing the way they behave on the site

the way downvoting happens now is awful, but I can't do much.

> Hey Mr. Obama, I think it's great that your getting to talk to people on reddit.
Here's my question. For those of us who aren't 18 yet, what should we be looking for in future presidential candidates when we vote?

8:42 PM
oh, i doubt i'd ever be elected

Q: Can old features ever be changed?

PurmouI've made my fair share of controversial suggestions (one was a stupid joke) on meta regarding features of the site that have been around for a while unchanged, as I'm sure a great deal of users have. One thing I've noticed on Meta is that a lot of feature requests that suggest changes to a feat...

though i'm surprised that question is better-received than this one:

Q: Can we actually discourage downvotes?

From the "Vote Down" privilege page: The upvote privilege comes first because that's what you should focus on: pushing great content to the top. Downvoting should be reserved for extreme cases. It's no...

and it's ironic, the exact phenomenon i complained about in the former question, which was apparently a nonexistent thing, is exhibited in plain sight in the latter

So, just because people don't agree with everything you say, it's a conspiracy by people who insist on doing it wrong intentionally?

I promise to stop having a conversation with myself about Reddit if you promise to stop oneboxing old poorly received posts.

@pop of course not. just noting observations. the status quo is rarely ever wrong when it comes to behavior on SE.

@Purmou I don't think that was all just because Gilles posted it. That was during the huge explosion of post deletion / reputation loss rage that happened when the reputation system became more "real time". There were a lot of people who felt really strongly about both sides.

@mootinator I don't care for your conversation with yourself, it's actually pretty amusing. :P

8:46 PM
@Purmou That's a somewhat paradoxical statement.

@jadarnel27 lol, that was also the time I posted my highest voted answer
