12:56 AM
Lol my clanmates are complaining because I keep deleting the "our forum has x number of posts wooo" topics...

1:08 AM
@animuson are you always here?

@Purmou: Usually, if I'm awake.
Sometimes I accidentally close out of it without realizing.

I told @ani Justin Bieber was planning to visit the room.
I know him because he's from Canada.

Haha

Of course, Jon Skeet's reputation history is already calculated. :P

2:41 AM
@animuson I think that's just Rebecca's sock puppet, posting questions so she can give answers I feel compelled to up vote.

@TimStone shhhhhhhhhhhhh

It's a conspiracy to prevent me overtaking you in Meta reps, obviously.
I'm also out of Pepsi, argh.

Awww, even the global rep recalc didn't give me my well-deserved reputation for tag wiki edit

Hmm, still no word on that huh?

just an "I'm looking into it" from Nick Craver

2:49 AM
Ah, well that's good :)

@TimStone obviously.

@RebeccaChernoff: Do the moderator notifications for new meta questions go away if the question gets closed? Or does it still show up and bother you so you go "ahhh it got closed such a waste of time"?

nods But it's OK, as long as everyone is distracted from outstanding Data Explorer and Election Stats sites issues until I can finish up this "work" nonsense and get back to it... >_>

@animuson hmm, doubt they do. Though that feature isn't active for MSO posts if that's what you're asking for.

Oh, that's no fun.

2:56 AM
was about to download windows 8 beta

Why can't you fix spelling mistakes in your edit reason?
Hahahaha :P probably because no one but us actually reads them?

meta post away!

@animuson Can't you, if you immediately re-edit?

I believe there was a question similar to that. Said it will always use the edit reason first entered when editing in the grace period.

Hmm, interesting.

I've tried it before, it's true.

Q: Why do up/down votes on Area 51 example questions affect your reputation?

PurmouThey are example questions after all, aren't they? Why do they affect your reputation on Area 51? Even if an example question is downvoted, why punish the user with -2 reputation for it? It's excellent that example questions get downvoted in the definition phase; otherwise, we'd only know what k...

5:37 AM
@Purmou Should a downvote give you reputation, that maybe you lose if it gets removed as a bad example of a bad question?

no, i don't think anything should be gained or lost from example questions
you already get 5 rep when people follow your proposal

So then you actually have to propose something to get reputation?

25 for referring, and that plus 50 at the start
yes
it empowers the people that really know the system more, doesn't it?
i'd rather have someone with a sucessful proposal voting to close or delete mine if its bad

What about people like me who don't really know anyone and only really help in the definition phase and discussing things?

then congrats, you help with a lot of important processes
you gain rep for discussions still, right?

5:40 AM
I don't know.
If you look at my profile there I've barely done anything haha
I used myself as an example because I don't socialize with many people at all
and that's all I could do (if I did it)

It doesn't look like you do. The discussion for each proposal appears to actually take place on discuss.area51, which is basically it's meta.
At least, nothing about discussing is listed in the reputation part of the FAQ

why be worried then? :D

You gained near 600 reputation?

@gideon because something was happened i may go banned
i got banned when i joined days
@animuson ya i gained

I don't know what would cause such a dramatic jump like that.

@Purmou this reputation will be corrected again to orginal one ?

6:32 AM
Usually when I gain from recalcs, it's only like 20 max

@Damodar this updated count is your correct one
that was the purpose of the changes that were made

@Damodar I think its because the -negative rep from your deleted posts has been reversed stackoverflow.com/users/668970/…
hey @jadarnel27 thanks for your help. Joining on the votes table didn't work as it tried to get all answers which has SOME vote. (Accepts or scoring) I did a different join : data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/62812/…

Wondering if anyone could help me out with this unscored answer distribution query
I'm trying to do a group by with case but I think I have the syntax wrong, given my Lack of sql know-how.

i obviously know less mysql than you do
only enough for a simple blog CMS :P

@balpha 's here!

he is :)
?

@Purmou it's not mysql, which makes that less off an advantage ;p

just got his platinum trophy finallllly

@balpha grr, i didn't know until a few months ago that any other database language even existed

the SQL basics are equal, but the differences are huge in some spots

There's even NoSQL languages.

rumor has it that T-SQL is actually Turing-complete

prefers them

@balpha mind helping me out with my query : data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/62904/…
I have a lot of stuff I've tried commented out.

I'm looking already

i'll just happily stick to HTML, CSS, and Javascript, thank you very much :P
anyways, i'm gonna head out
night everyone

Good night, @Purmou

Night @Purmou

@gideon what are you actually trying to do?

I'm trying to get a distribution of unscored questions => Count of (Unaccpted) AND (Accepted)

6:49 AM
well, right now you're looking for 0-score accepted answers of yours, right?

Something like this
|Count|Type
|75      | Accepted
|10      | Unaccpted
@balpha yes
@balpha well right now the query is more a list of 0 score answers of mine.
I want to group them by Accepted and Unaccepted.

and you're wondering about the 1/1/1/1... etc result?

Yes I want that to show aggregated together as 10
And (possibly) another column that has status or type "Accepted" or "Unaccepted"
if you please :)

Clues would be good too, I'm trying to learn better sql here

here's a simple edit that makes it work: data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/edit/62907
the performance sucks bigtime, though

7:06 AM
just found out about the Rep history changes.... Nice!

wow! Thanks @balpha I really have to study that query :)

that's muuuch faster
because you're doing the join on the primary key
I doubt that AcceptedAnswerId is indexed

Could I ask what x is for?
Just before Group By

you have to give the subquery a name (I always forget that)
it's short for "as x"
that may be a T-SQL peculiarity, don't know if that's standard in other SQLs

aha I see.

7:12 AM
oh, and I have my 0 and 1 mixed up in that last version
in case you didn't notice :)

yea Just did!
:)
@balpha Thanks a ton sir!

Can we close these requests for new SE sites as off topic?
They 'belong' on A51, in a way

10:24 AM
I've noticed that someone lost 420 reputation on an SE site yesterday, with the explanation "voting fraud reversed". I wonder what this could be caused by. The person in question is a well respected and very active regular of the site, and I am sure there was no planned fraud.
Is there some automatic detection for when someone gets too many votes?

@Szabolcs Yes, it's entirely automated

@YiJiangsProble_ What triggers these?

@Szabolcs A lot of votes in a short period of time. The specifics are unknown.

@YiJiangsProble_ Is it advisable to ask about specific situations on meta when there hasn't been any fraud? The thing is that big red -420 is damaging to the real-world reputation of the user (not rep score), and it is likely not at all his fault. Maybe someone has been voting for him too much, but that is out of his control (and happens without his knowledge)

@Szabolcs Not really. The system is automated - it can't read people's minds. It has undone legitimate votes before, and the appearance of line in the rep history doesn't mean anything.

10:31 AM
OK, thanks for the advice.

That said I do think the reputation part might warrant a question since the ability to see if anybody has votes on their question reversed is new

"the ability to see if anybody has votes on their question reversed" <-- I don't quite understand what you mean by that, can you clarify or give a link?

Q: Upcoming Reputation History Changes

Nick CraverUpdate: This has been rolled out to all sites in the network. Behind the scenes we've been hard at work making some changes to how we track reputation. @spolsky My first hebrew blog post. About remotely supporting a friend. At night. Via FB chat. In Hebrew. Read it here: http://mosheberman.com/wordpress/2012/03/02/%d7%b4%d7%a2%d7%96%d7%a8%d7%aa%d7%99-%d7%9e%d7%a8%d7%97%d7%95%d7%a7%d7%b4/

Hello everyone, I have a work related problem and thought maybe you guys could help.
A person that works for me has really bad odor. He has being doing a great job, but other workmates have complained and it has now become a problem for our work environment. How should I approach this issue?

With soap and a bucket filled with water. :P
A more subtle approach would be to place an air freshener right in front of him.

@Marcelo If he works for you (as in, you are his manager), I would talk to him privately about the problem, so as not to call him out in front of people.

line manager, privately, informally (i.e. as a friend) seems the way to go
and mention the "your work is awesome" thing too

^---Yes, that!

3:06 PM
(there are legitimate medical reasons why that might be an issue too)

Yes, I am his manager. And his friend too, knew him 5 years ago ... he didn't have this problem.

@jadarnel27 @jadarnel27 not a prob :) Just trying to learn SQL and DataExplorer seems like the perfect tool

@Marcelo I think you've just got to go for it. I think trying to be subtle with cans of air freshener or whatever might come across as bullying or passive-aggressive behaviour
(disclaimer: I'm by no means an expert but I think honesty trumps subtly and talking behind backs)

You are probably right, I just have to be direct but subtle. It's just hard to gather the courage to do it, I don't want to hurt his feelings, or anyone's.

someone on pse chat might have better ideas about how to raise the issue

3:33 PM
@Marcelo Ah, you really did come to chat!
My only suggestion is to take all suggestions you receive (including this one!) with a grain or two of salt. Everyone on the Internet is going to have to make a lot of assumptions, like mentally assigning both of you average personalities. Nobody knows the specifics of your office dynamics. And you don't really know which people on the web are social train wrecks in real life. (These are all things I thought of when I left that comment about this being a bad question for a regular SE site.)

@PopularDemand That is really, really good advice.

Has SEDE always had revision history, and I just never noticed, or is it new?

@PopularDemand It's pretty new.

Thanks (for both messages).

There was a great blog post about the SEDE update I think
@PopularDemand This! So the update was in January or so.

3:45 PM
I have a terrible habit of ignoring the blog posts I care the most about, because I think "oh, I need to focus on this one, I'll come back to it later when I have time."
Thanks again.

You're welcome. For death and glory!

4:11 PM
Thank you everyone for your advice. This is still really complicated for me to handle, and currently I am waiting for a moment of inspiration to take action.

@Marcelo you could always outsource your HR functions and make it somebody else's problem :)

Just end every sentence with "for death and glory!"
"I really need to refactor this method... for death and glory!". "Let's grab some lunch... for death and glory"

You kind of have a bad odor ... for death and glory!

@Marcelo Yes! Exactly =P
results may vary

4:38 PM
I think this request would have been better received had it been posted without all the fluff. I kind of want to edit it, but I don't want to over-edit. Hrm.

@jadarnel27 Yeah, I'm still not 100% sure I even see the difference they're talking about - perhaps I need to move my monitors closer
I don't quite get the "Web 1.0" vs 2.0 thing in that question either
I've seen bad design and good design for example of things I would consider fall under both

I couldn't get past the first statement in that question, where he talks about how Stack Overflow feels good... inside of him.

Perhaps that's part of the fluff that's tempting to edit out.

@awoodland After his last comment to you, I'm less inclined to helpfully edit the post.

@jadarnel27 that comment went in my "I'll ignore that" pile. An annotated screenshot would undeniably make the question a lot clearer

@JeremyBanks I've noticed that even some of my more complex custom flags get handled really fast these days

@David I'm sure its the warm and fuzzy feeling inside like when you're holding a cat, and not the other... type of inside feelings

I believe the short name for those is "allergic reactions."

If you were allergic you would be getting a rash. Which would be a warm and itchy feeling outside

Sure, if you're an allergy n00b.
The hardcore get a warm, fuzzy feeling in their lungs.

The "other" type of inside feelings has an even shorter name: gas. Not sure why you guys keep making this more complicated than it has to be.

5:41 PM
I like to call it "athsma". Chrome would like to disagree with me on that point, however, but I'm too lazy to look up the correct spelling.

@PopularDemand Oh hey, asthmatic hi-fi*cough* *wheeze* *cough*

@mootinator I'm certain it's hyphenated. Check that reference book, um, what's it called, oh right, Lord of the Flies.

@Purmou Yeah. But I also think they're both very dumb proposals. No offense meant.

Asking about privacy in a public venue? Reminds me of the espionage proposal, which I also raised a brow at.

@TimStone The first rule of spy.stackexchange is...

Why can't be vote-to-close as duplicate of the tag wiki? :(

Oh, I see what you mean

This solution and why it happens is explicitly explained (by me) in the tag wiki for , which he used to tag his question.

@Shog9 Just needs a close as general reference reason which has an automatic tag wiki FAQ link, heh.

@TimStone Ugh. I hate that close reason.

Why not just allow a user to specify a URL to a tag wiki as the target?

6:24 PM
All the more reason to make it better!
But yeah, tag wikis still have the discoverability problem.
And ultimately people will still ask anyway, since they can't even see duplicates when they're right on the front page...
(or see that they're on the wrong site, or...)

I like the idea of building a FAQ in the wiki that links to actual questions - then you can use those as dup-targets, while still keeping the wiki as a, "start reading here to become savvy" doc.

If I recall, I tried to do that a little bit with the mod_rewrite tag wiki, but apparently only 23 people have ever looked at it. -_-

@TimStone that entire tag feels like it belongs to webmasters/serverfault far more than SO to me

Hmm,can anyone think of any way to rewrite this question so it would actually be useful to future visitors:

How can I add whitespace to the output of json_encode() ?

6:36 PM
"Changing the formatting of json_encode()'s output," perhaps?

No, he's actually trying to combine both the outputs into one.

@awoodland There's several Meta discussions where the outcome is that it's fine where it is (which of course I support, give that that's where a lot of my reps came from :P)

The true purpose of the question seems a bit "too localized" to me, I can't think of a way to generalize it for others.

I could stop being lazy and get reps from other tags, but pssh.
mod_rewrite involves regular expressions and control flow, which seems programmery enough to me, on a more serious note.

@animuson oh :P

We're going to need a new logo for Meta Stack Exchange (or, if I had my way, Stack Exchange SE).

@animuson How can I un-flatten an association in php?

@mootinator: Haha, I'm sure tons of people search for "un-flatten an association"

Even the trees in Australia are out to get you.

@mmyers What is that?

@animuson You thought you've seen pinecones before. Those aren't pinecones. This is a pinecone.

@animuson Probably an unflattened PHP association.

It is, I've seen one up close.

@mmyers Since when are pinecones green?

How do I apply the [undefined] pattern in PHP?

In Australia, time flows backwards. Pinecones start brown and turn green before dropping.

Hmm. Turns out "Wonderland" = "Australia".
How's the queen of hearts these days?

@PopularDemand Lol

Urgh I wish the comments by you were slightly highlighted or something, so I can quickly find an answer I've commented on...

is forEach faster than for?

Yesterday it was Mesoamerican saw-swords with prismatic blades in household cutlery sets, now it's Australian pine oblate spheroids obeying standard gravity but reversed time flow. Something's not right here. What have you done with the real @mmyers?

I wish there was some q&a site where @animuson could make that suggestion or @Purmou could wrangle people into testing the performance of something.

Q: For vs Foreach loop in C#

KthevarWhich code snippet will give better perfomance? The below code segments were written in C#. 1. for(int tempCount=0;tempCount<list.count;tempcount++) { if(list[tempCount].value==value) { // some coding } } 2. foreach(object row in list) { if(row.value==value) { //some codin...

@animuson I wish you could search in comments.

@PopularDemand That's not quite true either. They do not obey standard gravity. It's reversed, but since Australia is upside down, it works out the same.

Q: Moderator permanent deletion of content is wrong

VinnieI started to think about this after the recent reputation "adjustment". It seemed weird that you would lose reputation when a question is deleted (or an answer you posted with upvotes gets merged into a comment). Obviously those contributions (questions or answers) had some value to somebody ...
