Well, just tried AirPrint successfully for the first time. Yay!

1 hour later…

How long does it take for a new gravatar to appear?
Well... I see it in my editor box and in the people who are here...

@Moshe As fast as I can refresh the page

But not in the live messages.
@Shog9 Do you see my new one?

I refreshed the page, so I do now

ok
Time to cram Ruby and Rails down my throat while suffering from the heat.

@jcolebrand Whoa!
Almost bought @Spolsky's book today in B&N. I only didn't because I had a tight budget. There were 3 of them there.

On @random's suggestion, meta-mods, I request your services.
(of course I fairly certain he meant to post my requests here, but since I already had the question prepared, this time I'm only I've provided a link.

Morning.

Morning

Well, technically it is morning here, but the wrong end of it.
Just blew three hours on Google+, hangouts are EPIC!

Hahaha

Well, I ended up teaching someone in Ohio some Ruby basics, as I'm learning them.
I should go to sleep soon.

@OctavianDamiean Who runs that room?

Looks like a room for all the perma-hell-whatever-banned folks.

He is an owner of the room?

Yes, he is.

Ok, morning, gotta sleep.

Hey What is going on here?

Nothing.

What happened Octavian?
@Wanted What happened?

You seen nothing. It was just a weather balloon. Nothing to see here.

I would say Wanted is coming dangerously close to being chat-suspended, period.
actually, yes, yes, it was, uhm, a weather balloon.

Where is Weather Balloon?
Here is hot and Sunny and work pressure :P

@OctavianDamiean If you are so interested in other rooms conversation then why you don't enter in room?

@Wanted because it's been deleted?

It is simple. Because I don't want to feed trolls.

It's cool if you want to feed me though. I've just woken up and am quite hungry.

Q: What picture should the chat error page have?

balphaBesides that fact that chat's error page is ugly because it has no styling, it also steals borrows the error lolcat image from Stack Overflow. Of course we hope that nobody ever sees that page, but I'm sure we agree that's not going to happen, so we could at least have our own image. So, what p...

@Mvy It was based on this number. stackoverflow.com/badges/1002/deputy

Well I know that :P

I like the wheel of blame. :D

@OctavianDamiean Only because it's so honest

at least all pages aren't
I would be in the top 100 that does not fit
Or well does it?

Oh and in 44 days I'll be a yearling. \o/ YAY

It's ordered by when you received the badge.

I had ~300 consecutive days on Stack Overflow. Then I missed a day on the Ubuntu Developer Summit. :(

Something similar happened to me on SO. I had visited every day since registering, but alas.
Though I am up to 300 consecutive on Meta, heh.

Funnily enough I remembered that I forgot to visit SO that day a few minutes past 12 o'clock somewhere in Hungary on the highway.

Q: Maximum Windows volume, laptop's bar is at 50%

ripper234I have a laptop with Windows 7. I set all the usual volume control are at max (via the mixer), but there is a separate (hardware?) volume bar that is displayed whenever I change the volume, and it is at 50%. Is there something I'm missing? How can I increase the volume further? Edit - I'm offer...

is this OK, SE-wise?

Image compressing in HTC Wildfire as I saw on site Resolution is 240X320 but Display display = getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay();
int width = display.getWidth(); resolution is 320X427,sorry for asking here

You don't have to be sorry but you just have to not ask that kind of stuff in here.

Trying to figure out at what num the #Ruby "Bignum" type starts at on my systm. Surely there's a better way than running a loop?

I'm not sure what you're asking.

> the largest Fixnum is apparently 2**30 - 1 (or 2**62 - 1),
I think he's asking what number causes ruby to switch from a Fixnum to a Bignum...

Ah, then yes.

but since Ruby handles all of that invisibly, I'm not sure why he cares. :p

What is the $%!@ing point of the fieldset element?

1:16 PM
@Fosco To group form elements together

ok....

1:43 PM
@Fosco Thanks.
Hey, a userscript to replace all dynamically with dinamically would be useless but fun.
Or, better, just swap all "y" out for an "i".

Wow, I've been starred...

Q: Slow page loading of certain items due to proxy?

DanMathJax and syntax-highlighed code items on stackoverflow pages take forever to load (on the order of minutes) when accessed via a proxy server. There is no such slowdown on other websites using MathJax. Is there anything one can do to fix this? I have found this issue reported and discussed her...

Oh, wait, it's been reproduced on Meta.MathOverflow.

Doesn't look a thing like one of ours.

@tombull89 SE 1.0. Probably the most popular 1.0 site there was.

I thought it got merged into Math.SE, hence the great math war.

So, is this even a valid question for M.SO?
does SE even host MathJax? i'm so confused >_<

Well, the OP does explicitly state "on stackoverflow pages." Until we can confirm that that's a typo and he meant MathOverflow, it's... "valid."

@tombull89 no, we're using mathjax' CDN

As of April, six SE sites use it, but SO is not one of them: blog.stackoverflow.com/2011/04/…
So, it's probably safe to vote to close that post.

@TimStone I don't think anybody asked for it, but Jeff wanted it anyway :)

Someone did actually.

Heheh

@TimStone I haven't found anything

2:19 PM
Actually, now that Tim says that, it does seem familiar

I think someone mentioned it off-hand after being explained that the hint only worked for a single code block at a time.

Mayhaps

I know I've repeated the hint multiple times when editing a post too, so I appreciate it either way :P

Q: Merge [.net-generics] into [generics]?

abatishchevIs .net-generics really required? Should it be merged into more general generics, with appropriate synonym added?

5
Q: The single tag for Office Open XML

abatishchevCurrently on SO I found more the one tag for Office Open XML: ooxml (76), openxml (341), office-open-xml (0 so far). Also Wikipedia lists all of them: Office Open XML (also informally known as OOXML or OpenXML) .. Maybe merge all answers into the single one?

Q: Rework [wcf-service] and [wcfservice]

abatishchevCurrently wcf-service (23) is not a synonym to wcfservice (988). Please add. Also I think that wcf-service should be main, and wcfservice - synonym. Thanks.

3:49 PM
@jcolebrand That guy thinks eval is dangerous... page closed. ;p

what? I think eval is dangerous too, for like 95% of javascript developers
there is almost always something more sane

yeah i can't even pretend to agree... since every browser has a javascript console, eval is everywhere, and not inherently dangerous. Could it be used in a dangerous fashion, sure, but so could document.write().

eval is inherently dangerous
it teaches bad technique

@Fosco Douglas Crockford lists it as one of the "bad parts," for what it's worth.

I lump it in the same category as goto
it has a purpose
and I know of those purposes

3:54 PM
call it "bad", but not "dangerous"

and while I grant you that there are occasions where it's truly useful, in most situations, it's uncalled for
However, this is the internet, and we are allowed to disagree here
q: so I shall continue to let you be wrong and I will just keep my mouth shut about your being wrong :p
hey look, I invented a new punctuation mark :D

you call me wrong, yet ignore the fact that any user can eval any code they desire, in every major browser.
the only dangerous possibility is allowing a user to submit code that will be eval'd when OTHERS view the page.
which would be stupid, and very unlikely... and not the fault of eval.

No, I'm not discounting that anyone can run eval anywhere
I'm not discounting that a blind person could drive a car
I'm just saying that the use of it, regardless right or wrong, is not to be just bandied about

Q: jQuery uses (new Function("return " + data))(); instead of eval(data); to parse JSON, why?

Luca MatteisThis link shows you that jQuery uses (new Function("return " + data))(); for older browsers, to parse a JSON string instead of eval(). What are the benefits of this? What if the JSON string isn't safe?

However, giving someone the power of eval who can't appreciate the power of eval will cause them to do dumb shit like "oh look, I can let you submit your own javascript, I should do that!!"

4:00 PM
@jcolebrand you mean, like jsfiddle or jsperf? :)

@jcolebrand darwinism exists... people need to make mistakes, fail, and die.

@balpha I was under the impression that the code was read into a database, then emitted into an iFrame as script/text, so not quite the same thing at all, no.
@Fosco if they would only die faster I would agree with you

@Fosco Darwinism is what an Apple fanboy practices. :P

4:18 PM
@balpha Yeah, exposing scope is definitely the most significant issue with eval().

@TimStone Oh, and I who thought arbitrary execution of code was the real deal.

Well, giving arbitrary code more access than it would usually have is generally worse, I think. :P

4:37 PM
It's official.

What's official?

@jcolebrand No, I made a reddit account.

That you're now going to exclusively write RoR code because it's more elegant and beautiful?

[removed] ?

4:39 PM
That ended up being much less exciting than I anticipated. I think the problem lies in the latter part of that sentence.
Hmm, it's past lunch time and I'm starving. Time to do something about that.

@TimStone same here, mostly

So here's something kinda fringe, has everyone here heard of piff the dragon?

Can't say that I have.

BTW, thanks. Now I have Puff the Magic Dragon bouncing around in my head.

@jcolebrand Yes... saw him on Penn & Teller's Fool Us
he did a great job

5:12 PM
Yes he did
do you think it was thermal?

ahh... very possible it is removed by thermal/rubbing
he removed it in 25% pieces, pretty fine lines too

Yeah, but I thought I saw something holographic there

@Fosco What's the difference between that and "SEO FOR FREE!! EMAIL ME HERE!!" ?

Huge differences... I'm a regular, it's not a scam, I didn't use caps lock.

also, some people want free SEO. Who wants an iPhone 1? ;p

@Fosco The intent of the post is still the same.

@balpha lol :D
@TimPost Whatever, I'm not arguing with you, only answered your question.

6:28 PM
@Fosco "But I am offering free SEO, this guy sold an iPhone here .. [link]"
Quite a slippery slope :) I don't mean to be obstinate.

p.s. it was an iPad, not an iPhone.

oh, right

@Fosco Aha!

I think the point has been adequately communicated.

well in that case, you're clearly a scammer. We all know that the iPad is a myth.

6:31 PM
So, there's a FREE IPAD being given away, and the details of how to get it are being censored?

not free -- you have to offer SEO services in exchange
or something...

goes back to Twitter to attempt to win an iPad by retweeting people's marketing messages.
