@Shog9 and intellisense, and go-to-related, and "hey dumbass you did this part wrong" (oh wait, spell check is common now isn't it?)

@drachenstern Unless you use IE, yes. But I get what you're saying... I suspect IDE / programmer-editor developers have a unique advantage there, insofar as they're immersed in the workflow as they're designing tools to streamline it.

@Shog9 oh absolutely. I wouldn't even know how to go about giving this sort of utility to .. a SAP user, for instance.
Granted, I don't write SAP utilities either, just they're a large name.

OpenOffice has something like intellisense, but I can't seem to find the keybind that excepts its suggestion.

@GeorgeMarian most of the office apps on the market have programming in them somewhere. I imagine they all have some capability for that either inherent or co-habitant

well, and then you run into English having way more complicated contexts than even C++.

12:05 AM
@drachenstern This isn't for the macro writing or anything like that.

@Shog9 exactly. But there's people who can do language parsing better than I can parse C++ code ... there's just not an explicit regex can be built for it.

I mean... I don't even know how I intend to end this thought - how could I reasonably design a program to suggest the ending (oh great, now I spent two lines writing about how I don't know how I'm going to end this and utterly forgot even the inkling I had of its destination when I started typing it... ELLIPSES!)

<cringe>I rue the day when people think they know what they're doing and start asking for a regex to parse text
And I didn't forget to close that tag. I'm still cringing. I expect you all to as well :p

@Shog9 I watched Casino Royale again last night ... that's what was on the text message that he used to get through the security door at the airport! Classic!

12:07 AM
Actually, I'm searching SO... It would rather surprise me if there aren't ALREADY TOO MANY QUESTIONS ON THAT

I'm designing dropdown lists

@drachenstern I should add that to my NF queue then

more specifically jQueryUI AutoComplete callback rendering
@Shog9 absolutely.
I own all but the most recent Bond

DONE!
(Now i just need to watch a dozen or so other films first)

12:10 AM
NetFlix has forced me to realize just how little tolerance I have for sitting passively in front of a screen anymore.

Just wait till you get an iPad

At least I don't have to sneak liquor into my livingroom. Movies are better with alcohol.
@drachenstern I'm... unlikely to go that route any time soon. I may spend 90% of my evening just reading, but typing on a touch-screen still breaks my relaxation.

@drachenstern well he did the hello world...

@Shog9 typing is not passive consumption. I rather meant you'll realize how much less you do it even when you have the opportunity to unrestrictedly.
@Trufa the slacker

@drachenstern yep, a traitor to your kind.

12:15 AM
Look look, Microsoft ran some friendly tests that prove that Microsoft comes out ahead when it's pandered to!! And also, they have fancy contacts at big sciency places

@drachenstern heh... When I can run IE9 on Android, this will matter to me.

@Shog9 exactly

Speaking of battery life though... Went in to the office Friday after finding myself unable to log onto my desktop remotely - found that i'd inadvertently configured the machine to suspend when battery life (UPS) dropped to 10%. And apparently, Windows 2k3 can't differentiate between 10 and 100%.
(I'm sure there's something important I missed, but... it was Friday.)

12:31 AM
So ... the first TRWTF I see there is running Win2k3 as your desktop still ... why not NT6.x?

I'm lazy.

The second is what kind of UPS?

some APC thing. I forget the model.

What a shame. I normally have good response from those things.
Ya know, it's also a shame that EVERY STINKING DEV IN THIS OFFICE shows up as "away" on IM, instead of "offline" ... what's up with that?
All the rest of the office is "offline" but all the dev's are merely away

Devs just lock their machines and walk away?

12:35 AM
Well I know the boss took his laptop home, and he's either off or online, so it's probably that they did some sort of suspend or something

hmm... What IM service?

idk, I reboot mine every night (I've been bitten by three too many "oh, ffs, reboot now?")
@Shog9 Microsoft Office Communicator. What a joy. ............................................... ......................................................... (it needs a lot of room here because really the sarcasm doesn't wear off that fast)</sarcasm>
idk, I mean it's not a bad product, just doesn't always work "as expected"

Ah, The IM Service That (almost) Could
I just found out this past week that, while there's a rather nice (3rd-party) client for Android, using it simultaneously with the desktop client doesn't really fly - the desktop grabs all the conversations.

for ... skype?
No seriously, that's one thing Skype does right.

I haven't really even tried the Skype Android client yet. It's a nifty idea though. Really, anything that doesn't involve running Skype on the desktop gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling.

12:41 AM
is this valid JSON? [ { "label" : "value"}, ] note the trailing comma
No, it doesn't like the trailing comma either

14
Q: Can you use a trailing comma in a JSON object?

Ben CombeeWhen manually generating a JSON object or array, it's often easier to leave a trailing comma on the last item in the object or array. For example, code to output from an array of strings might look like (in a C++ like pseudocode): s.append("["); for (i = 0; i < 5; ++i) { s.appendF("\"%d\...

Yeah, it's invalid per the JSON spec.

Q: Is it bad to marinate meat for too long?

pykoHi, From my experience it is always best to marinate meat for a decent amount of time, so the meat can "soak" up the marinade and be more flavourful. However, I came across this recipe here: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/cookandchef/txt/s2264630.htm In the directions, it says: Add pork and marinade ...

holy shit I've never considered the format that guy suggested
that's effing brilliant

TASTE IT AND SEE ^^^^

12:44 AM
I really need to retire and get on a run to put Aaronut out of commission across the network.
English, Food, where else?

He's on English too? Damn. That cat is hot

Oh nm, I thought he was higher than he is on EL&U. That's the one where he just dabbles.

Oh yeah, on Cooking he's a cornerstone

and with 30k on SO he's not exactly a nobody
so back to this loop that I'm writing. I like this prepend the comma in a for loop, but it requires removing my foreach ... decisions decisions

if the string isn't empty, append a comma before appending the next entry

12:47 AM
I'm using a stringbuilder
also, c# doesn't effing like if (i) { because ... cannot implicitly convert int to bool
damnit language, just do what I want...

JavaScript != JSON, assuming that was the point you were trying to make. :P

@TimStone yes, that too, but still

Of course, IE chokes on the trailing comma even in JavaScript, so there you go, heh.

Tim beat me to it, but... IE sucks.

I liked that

12:53 AM
@Shog9 To be fair, our messages have the exact same timestamp. Hooray for message collisions.

@TimStone 21573 to 21879

Hmm?

You appear to be slacking off. The ~1500 gap has dwindled to 300

Ah, yes...busy busy.

Yeah, same here
Otherwise I should have passed you by now :p

12:56 AM
As I mentioned before, it was inevitable anyway on account of my upcoming vacation, so. Plus, I can feel that much better about how I spend my time. ;)

bah, vacation

so has anyone heard from josh lately? I know there was a whirlwind of packing to be done, etc

I've just assumed he was off doing said packing.
His chat status says so, and to leave him a message, but that was two days ago.

Yeah, but I still worry for his sanity.
Also, Thursday I shall be gone roughly 3 hours ago now. I intend to have done so anyways.

12:58 AM
@Shog9 I know, isn't it exciting? I was surprised that it's taken so long though, but I'll take it!

If you see me here on Thursday at 1700CDT tell me to skat

makes a note

lol, indeed

I'd write it on my whiteboard, but I still need to fix the wall from where I pulled that sucker off...so it won't be going back up any time soon.

Ya know what's dumb? When code sent and code received have to match each other. Again, why won't this thing read my intent?
@TimStone how have you not fixed that already?

1:01 AM
Well, it's not particularly important. My spackle somehow got moldy, so I need to go get more...just hasn't been convenient.
It's just surface damage, so meh. shrugs

I have some mold in my basement if you want any. |:

I would take you up on that offer but I don't have a basement to put it in

basement not required.

@RebeccaChernoff Is it willing to relocate? Also, that's not cool.

Basement: not supported!

1:06 AM
@TimStone oh yes, happily ready.

wow, I guess I should spark the room back to activity huh? :p
Ok, on that note, I'm going home ;)

@drachenstern hi!
@drachenstern bye!

whew, he's finally gone, now we can talk again.

3:03 AM
Apparently if you're a programmer long enough, eventually you end up using jQuery a lot.

1 hour later…
4:14 AM
@drachenstern it seems that @theOutOfStarsException was the life of this room, with you being second. He's been gone so we see who else participates.
But when he was around, I never saw a not busy room.
Seems like folks got some things to do.
Rchern got a new job (I refer to her joining SE) and Josh has to pack. Nyuszika got suspended and there goes room chemistry.
I hope things change soon.

Jin

@Moshe What am I? Chopped liver? ;)
@Jin LOL

Jin
@GeorgeMarian you're high grade bacon to me.
@GeorgeMarian (that's a compliment)

creepy. TV's on in the background. Said, "chopped liver" just as George posted it.
(But was referring to actual (fictional) chopped liver)

4:20 AM
@Jin Heh. As long as you don't try to eat me. ;)

Jin
@GeorgeMarian not making promises...

lol
@Shog9 That makes me think of this idea/theory in psychology about people in disparate locations having the same dream and what not. It's like some cosmic force connecting your tv to me. ;)

or you both are watching the same channel ;)
jk

That's a possibility, though I don't have a tv in this room. Well, scratch that. I have an old tv w/o a digital tuner that isn't even plugged into the wall. :)

anything look horribly wrong there?

4:25 AM
you wrote it in the future?

@waffles You guys actually made, gasp, mistakes?

@RebeccaChernoff possibly? what are you referring to (:
@GeorgeMarian LIES

@waffles tis the 29th here, not the 30th! q:

@waffles And data?

@RebeccaChernoff aha ... AUSTRALIA is in a time machine

4:28 AM
The international date line, we are across it :)

Jin

Are we supposed to be noticing something that is wrong?

Ironically, I don't see a date. :)

@GeorgeMarian the url (:

Jin
@waffles you live in a confusing place...

4:29 AM
@RebeccaChernoff /facepalm

@GeorgeMarian a lot of these issues did not crop up until we had massive scale

@Jin It gets better when you compare the dst and non-dst maps

@waffles heh. Par for the course.

Jin
@waffles just let us people of the past know when the new robot overlords take over, I for one, welcome them...

@Jin My thoughts exactly on the USA ... was listening to "this american life" and someone from Georgia sat in prison for 3 year for forging 2 checks worth 100 bucks.

yeah I heard in some town in Adelaide they have got like two timezones (with and without DST) confusing as hell

Jin
@waffles but i'm sure Ira Glass' soothing voice and awkward pauses made it sound all OK.

@waffles I would introduce your solution after "The promise..." and before "Some simple..."

@Jin if by by OK, you mean ... filled me with rage and made me want shoot someone, you are totally right. @Shog9 thanks will fix
@Shog9 Jeff is not around but I am pretty sure he would be fine with me floating this code out there... I was a little bit vague on it prior to getting his ok

@waffles Fraud is serious crime, man. Folks fuels use it to fuel their drug habits, and DRUGS ARE BAD

4:35 AM
@Shog9 Funny that you mention drugs, cause it was a "drug court" and the judge was on a mission to fix the world
punish the world into compliance

@waffles Oh, I wasn't implying you have to actually post your entire lib... Just that you've missed even describing what you ended up doing before presenting data on how it performed.

The entire lib used for the benchmark is like 100 lines ... Ill just post it in a gist

@waffles A minor typo: "Our workload at Stack Overflow is heavily skewed toward very very cheap queries that <del>to</del>do a simple clustered index lookup"

thanks @George

Jin
@waffles you just reminded me that i had a blog... i need to finish this blog post i started back in November...

4:39 AM
@Jin lol

@Jin I am not much better :)

I wonder when I last posted on my blog.
and the answer is: May 11, 2008!

Jin
i only blogged before, because my old job was so boring... i needed a creative outlet..

Q: How to serve oranges so it is easy for guests to enjoy them?

z-bossUsually I just cut them into 6 pieces (see image), but it's kind of messy to eat them this way. Is there a better way?

I think the last time I "served" oranges to guests, it was sitting with a bag of them and periodically lobbing them across at whoever was looking bored.

cooking se is a weird weird place

@GeorgeMarian you are not chopped liver. But the most prominently noticibpe character in this room has always been @TheOutOfStarsException (by any name which he went)

I mean, it was kinda broken as those notifications wouldn't close, but it made it super easy to mock up stuff.

Does anyone know how to remove expertsexchange from my personalized google search results >_< ?

Jin
@Reno there should be a link below the result to block it. something like "Cached - Similar - Block expertsexchange.com"

YOU
may be install personal block list in chrome and block it?

@Jin I think google has rolled out that block feature to some parts of the world. I dont see it.

Jin
@Reno are you logged in gmail?

6:34 AM
yep I am

Jin
@Reno hmm i guess the chrome extension is the other solution then.

@badpssockpuppet it's now StackExchange.notify.show

Jin
@Reno you know what? i am using that extension... so it wasn't a regular feature from google web.

@badpssockpuppet @balpha just had to go and mess with all the js q:

It's okay, if it was anybody but @balpha I'd have been told instead "you shouldn't use that anyway, you bad person" :P

speaking of Careers, are the invitation requirements public?
It's not. Fair enough.

Yeah

A: What reputation do you need on Stack Overflow to receive an invite to Careers?

David FullertonIt's a secret :) The exact criteria probably won't be announced, because we don't want people to game it. It's not a straight "greater than X reputation", but based on expertise in a tag, and your recent activity on the site. Also, we're trickling them out slowly (rather than blasting out 25,0...

oh yeah, thats the one

A: css 2 column but have full height regardless of div height

Yi JiangHere's a simple method. Using an AP box and a wrapper, we can create what you're looking for. <div id="wrapper"> <div id="left"></div> <div id="center"></div> </div> CSS: #wrapper { position: relative; } #left { width: 100px; } #center {...

I need somebody to review this answer; I really don't know how or why it got to -2 - I'm pretty sure its revenge downvoting, but, uh, is there something wrong with it that I can't see?

WHAT A TERRIBLE ANSWER
starts reading it
Honestly @YiJiang I can't understand what the question is

Which part is problematic?
Actually, you know what, I just found a case where that solution doesn't work. I'll delete that answer now

@badpssockpuppet I know, I have no idea how I missed that 5 months earlier

I guess that's his entire problem :)

Imagine you're back at school and this is your task.

Using the form on the right, write something interesting using only words from the list of the 100 most commonly used words in English.

The subject, inspiration and execution is entirely your choice. It could be an instruction to an England footballer or a precocious toddler thinking aloud.

The rankings of words come from the Oxford English Corpus of more than a billion written words.

Now turn over your exam papers and start.

@YiJiang HERP DERP (check the history if you really want to read it)
Oh wait, the list doesn't include swearwords.
They'd probably rank in the top 10 if they did though :P

@badpssockpuppet Its for written text, so that's why :P
@badpssockpuppet Pity, I'd star it if it wasn't for that :P

@YiJiang From my experience at Gaming, I know better than that :P
@YiJiang «100 most commonly used words in English» would include those...

Like today I am working on some documentation before I get back into my code ...
@Shog9 speaking of killing parents ... watched Bambi over the weekend (had a toddler underfoot, she didn't want to goto sleep) and that is not the movie I remember it being. I encourage people to watch it again.

SPRING, HAS COME AGAIN, TO THE FOREST!
(but Bambi's mother is still dead)

Hmm, I have a sudden craving for deer jerky.
@Shog9 I dunno, in the Platinum Edition, anything is possible.

Yeah, it's definitely a different film than what I remembered
Also, who else here uses google mail multiple inboxes?
