In other news you want to try SpaceChem.

@badpssockpuppet I was just thinking that after peeking over at The Bridge

@TimStone That gaussian thing is especially compelling
eeeeevil stuff.

12:29 AM
@badpssockpuppet It's on my to-do list after I finish rearranging my room, heh.

Q: Remap Interesting Tags When Synonymed

Lance RobertsI recently found that a tag I had as an Interesting Tag had been synonymed (foolishly), and now I wasn't getting any highlighting. How about (as per Waffles suggestion here) we remap those Interesting Tags for a user once they've been synonymed?

I think more food is in order
Speaking of ...

1:40 AM
Hiya folks.

@drachenstern I'll be back in half an hour
ok?
sorry for the delay...

@Trufa no need to apologize, it was just a bit of a "if you have time" not a "omg the end of the world"

Guess what's processing for App Store, anyone?

1:56 AM
Nippon, Game of the Universe Edition
I know you are all jealous, but try and contain yourselves ;)
rice and beans and beef and nom nom nom

drool

lol

hmm gource isn't nearly as fun when nobody every branches anything

@drachenstern, thanks for hiding the cans before you took the pictures q:

Zing!

2:02 AM
@RebeccaChernoff there were NO CANS!!!!!
>_<

I made a pizza. And by make I mean put it in the oven.

lol, I made one of those Monday

@Zypher eh, you don't need branches it just tracks file changes.

ha i see running it against our scripts repo ... whoa

(:
@TimStone that is not an acceptable use of the word "make" (:

2:04 AM
@RebeccaChernoff I dunno, it was as easy as make

make dinner
Make failed, unknown target: dinner
3

I'll grant you that placing something in an oven is a step above placing something in a microwave.

I very rarely put things in the microwave :P

@TimStone they only cost about $60

@drachenstern yuppers!
Why the H does everyone here bring a camera to every single meal???!

2:10 AM
@Moshe it's a rule.
When you don't we have to ban you
you get three non-food-camera-bans and then it's a permaban

(just to prove I make real food too :P)

@TimStone looks good

Also:

Too much white fluffy rice there. I love rice, but it needs to have flavor.

It was an appropriate amount ;)

2:15 AM
@Moshe and the response to that is "to each their own"
depending on the meat you pair it with and the seasonsings/sauces on the meat, that's not really an issue

Looks good though.
Cameras can't capture flavor
But, yea, the main dish affects the rice too.

@drachenstern There's a fair amount of spice on that second one :D

@TimStone yeah, that was part of the reason for the commentary
@Moshe when you've eaten quite a few things you can appreciate flavor from coloration
Some days it is dreadfully evident I am getting old

lol

2:30 AM
I need a movie to watch tonight. Somebody nominate a good watchable movie

2:45 AM
@Zypher do you know why you failed?

@drachenstern i never fail

@Zypher ok, well you did
I hate to break it to you

haha ah but you think i did , but really ... i never fail :)

Why does my SSH session keep freezing? grumbles

Because it's cold
It wants you to show it some more attention. To love on it and warm it up. Hold it close Tim, hold it close.

2:48 AM
@TimStone while [ 1 -eq 1 ]; sleep 5; done ?
but back to the point @drachenstern why do you think i failed ?

ooohhh we're talking about how @Zypher fails?
grabs some popcorn and a seat.

@Zypher anybody suggesting that middle-aged Sean Connery in spandex is a good thing automatically fails. @RebeccaChernoff back me up here ;)

HAHA

Hey were those send/recv buffers in the driver explictly?

slaps a FAIL sticker on @Zypher's forehead.

2:53 AM
and was it "Interrupt Moderation" or "The Input Moderation feature was disabled."

@drachenstern send/recv are set in the driver properties, under advanced -> performance

cool

and ... typo on the second ... interrupt moderation
@RebeccaChernoff like you could reach my forehead ;)

Oh snap ;)
WTMF
SSH session just dropped again, in the middle of a load.
fumes

3:00 AM
is your host overworked?

It's an AWS instance, so let's hope not :P

haha

have you told it how much you <3 it lately? given it a hug?

i think today has been bad question day on SF

Q: why mutil thread download is faster than single thread ?

whyThere is one large file in my server, I find that, mutil thread download can get 20Mbs, but single thread can get 10Mbps, anyone can explain this ?

@RebeccaChernoff It keeps making me angry, so no :p

3:02 AM
well there's your problem!!

@Zypher Oh boy

ahh and while i was showing it off another mod closed it :)

goes to into manually clean up the mess
Since of course the load script assumes everything will go fine..

@TimStone of course, that's the only type of script to write

@RebeccaChernoff hey that was my line

3:05 AM
i mean ... you'd have to add hundreds of sanity checking lines for a simple operation!

Or just drop the staging tables if they exist, but yeah :P

@RebeccaChernoff you don't love servers, they will take advantage of you ... you need to beat them mercilessly and let them know who the alpha processor in th pack is

@drachenstern hi!
I'm sorry for the delay again

@Trufa hi
@Trufa pfft

@drachenstern :)

3:07 AM
@Zypher I'm pretty sure hugging them works better.

@drachenstern So, lets go ahead AMA!

hahah ... nah ... it really doesn't you hug them and they zap you with 1000 volts damn bastards

Apparently the script failing has created a boss table...

@Trufa So there's not really much description of what the classes are like, or how much school is expected of the students. You could compare it to this page:
Education in the United States is mainly provided by the public sector, with control and funding coming from three levels: federal, state, and local. Child education is compulsory. Public education is universally available. School curricula, funding, teaching, employment, and other policies are set through locally elected school boards with jurisdiction over school districts with many directives from state legislatures. School districts are usually separate from other local jurisdictions, with independent officials and budgets. Educational standards and standardized testing decisions are...
Education in Uruguay is compulsory for a total of nine years, beginning at the primary level, and is free from the pre-primary through the university level. In 1996, the gross primary enrollment rate was 111.7 percent, and the net primary enrollment rate was 92.9 percent. Primary school attendance rates were unavailable for Uruguay as of 2001. Education System Primary education in Uruguay was free and compulsory; it encompassed six years of instruction. The number of primary schools in 1987 was 2,382, including 240 private schools. There were 16,568 primary school teachers and 354,1...

brings out the bigger guns and restarts Postgres

3:10 AM
oh ... there is your problem you arn't using an ENTERPRISE database

@drachenstern Ok so first a little bit of context

@Zypher Yeah, Oracle is sort of a competitor, so ;)

Uruguay is a country with a lot of disparity

@Trufa sure

haha, no that's not enterprise either ... MUST BE SYBASE!

3:11 AM
@Zypher are you ever gonna let that go? (;

Nowadays

@RebeccaChernoff Would you? :p

@RebeccaChernoff not in the near future ... sysadmins have a long memory

It is a very particular country though, probably to it's size and population
very small and 3.5 million
aprox

@Zypher so you're probably going to say it...over 9000 times more?

3:13 AM
@RebeccaChernoff only for the next 6 to 8 weeks I'm sure

@drachenstern Education has always been a great pride of uruguay

@Trufa so how many months in the year do you go to school?
How many hours a day? (of course I mean primary education right now)

@drachenstern untill college all but three
@drachenstern it depends on a lot of things

@RebeccaChernoff sigh

@drachenstern the matter is that there is not only one system

3:14 AM
@Zypher I demand 100% uptime by the way. I siphon off a few dollars from your paycheck every time I see the maintenance notice.

@Trufa So is the education in Uruguay like the education in Europe where there is either a pre-college or trade school or just general education?

@Zypher q:

haha ... well then ... you're not gonna like friday

@TimStone haha
Hey so what's going on 04/01?

"I am now reducing your salary by 1k/year for every day this goes by unresolved."

3:15 AM
@drachenstern no, there is pre college.

@RebeccaChernoff oh man what was that one about?

at the age of 16 you must decide an orientation

@Trufa well we have something like that in our HS, but it doesn't change the amount of time spent in HS, just the courses taken.

@RebeccaChernoff I see you've realized that my definition of "a few" is a little extreme.

@drachenstern well, what changes the amount of time you spend is you school choice
not the orientation
for example
my school was a little bit longer that some because of the english lessons

3:18 AM
I dunno what it was about.

@drachenstern well actually, my first 6 years of education was in a private (not statal - we call ti the other way round) school called saint andrews
@drachenstern it is actually almost the same as going to school in england or scotland

@Trufa statal - funded by the state? by the govt?

Meh, I don't get why this load takes this long...hrm. I wonder what I've done wrong.

@drachenstern yes (as in what is statal), but my school wasnt....
does that word even exist?
I think it migh be spanglish
:)

@Trufa not really, but the meaning is fairly evident.

3:21 AM
@drachenstern hehe and I was about to say that my english was good because of this primary education and here I am inventing words :)
@drachenstern the thing is, in uruguay, a huge percentage know how to speak at least some english.

@Trufa well, there's a bit of a (erm) expression here about the more words you know the more likely you are to invent new words. Those with smaller vocabulary and less education just use less words.

@drachenstern hehe but in this case it was just spanglish, "estatal" is related to the state in spanish

@Trufa Yeah, but that seems to be true for most of Latin America (or rather, the # per country seems to tend to be the same, causing a lower percentage for some but overall a high rate of English speakers) but I get your point. It's also why so much of the internet suffices to be in English wihtout causing undue difficulty

hence the confusion

@Trufa well yeah, but it still comes across :p

3:25 AM
@drachenstern the thins is, I watched obama dance in the ellen degenres show
I watched the presidential debates
I know a lot about USA's history
Europe history
and your country geography and such becuse we are deeply affected
by your economy for example
(and everything else)
@drachenstern we use the 6 dollar on a almost daily basis for example

@Trufa yeah but sadly most of the world is affected by our economy, which is quite sad.
@Trufa yeah but you have a national currency, no?

@drachenstern yes we do, but you "can't" buy a car in our currency

Peso no?
heh, explain?

@drachenstern hehe very good! yes
@drachenstern we use peso for the daily stuff, the bigger thins car, houses or even house appliances and such, are always in dollars

because of atraso cambiario ?

3:29 AM
@drachenstern no, we don't hava a real atraso cambiario
there is a theoretical one going on
that economists can measure

wow, that concept is just kind of foreign to me

@drachenstern it is very hard to see for someone who just uses one currency

if anyone else is curious, here's the link I'm thumbing through (obvious, yes?)
:This article is about the present currency of Uruguay. For Uruguay's earlier monetary history, see Currency of Uruguay. Uruguayan peso has been a name of the Uruguayan currency since Uruguay's settlement by Europeans. The present currency, the peso uruguayo (ISO 4217 code: UYU) was adopted in 1993 and is subdivided into 100 centésimos. Introduction Uruguay obtained monetary stability in 1896, based on the gold standard. This favorable state of affairs ended after World War One. An unsettled period followed. Economic difficulties after World War Two produced inflation, which became ser...

@drachenstern ohh those coins are very new by the way
I have not even seen them

@Trufa well when I was in Europe (and of my European friends who are all on Euro) I've still ever only had the one currency

3:31 AM
Someone say currency? Nippon now has grouping separators in most of the UI.

@Trufa say what?
@Moshe yes, and it looks good. Also, read up, it'll be good for you

Thanks. What am I reading?

@drachenstern The ones you see in the pictures, are new designs for our coins, they are very new and haven't seen any of those yet

@Moshe a conversation
@Trufa interesting. also "say what" by itself is an expression of disbelief. It's not a real question.

Ok.

3:34 AM
@drachenstern ahh haha I did know about this application but was missing out on the tone of the expression

@Trufa ;)

@drachenstern going back to the currency
uruguay has all of its savings (virtually) on dollars
so we are very affected by your economy
but in very strange unpredictable ways
A good stable growing usa economy => good for us
A not growing usa economy => terrible for us
A crashing economy like last one => could be great for us (like this last one)

well yeah if you guys can get ahead of things
that's always kind of tricky but economists can do it, it's about trading on the crash

@drachenstern exactly, but even so, with a "macro lens" it is very hard to predict
@drachenstern yes it is very interesting to study

@Trufa that's true everywhere ;)

3:40 AM
@drachenstern I think it is in chinese of japanese, the word crisis actually means (or could) opportunity too

It's attributed to the chinese:
> A crisis is an opportunity riding a dangerous wind

@drachenstern ohh one thing i missed to mention, you can get an excellent education, from 4 years old to being an internationally approved engineer without paying a single peso

Yeah, we seem to be one of the few countries where that's not an option

@drachenstern well I don't know about that
in our region is not so common
@drachenstern a particularity is that for example, I you (or anyone else for that matter) would like to come to study for free, you can
from any country anywhere, whenever you like

what? Interesting

3:46 AM
@drachenstern you can be a full citizen of our in a couple of weeks
And then you will have as much right as I do

Fascinating

to have a free statal ;) education

hehe, I see what you did there.

@drachenstern hehe

So how did your private education compare to that of your peers estatal education?

3:48 AM
@drachenstern Just in case, I don't want to hurt anybodys sensibility here with the following statements
:)
but the thing is, like in most places of the world
if yoy are rich you'll have it better
and if you are poor you'll have it worst

In the spirit of our recent redesign of the users page, we felt it was time to enhance the tags page, too.

As you can see, the tags page now shows a bit more information about each tag, namely:

It is my strong belief that the tags page is an essential map of what your community is, and is not, about.

Thus, putting the tag wiki excerpts front and center on the tag page is an opportunity to educate your community about the tags you’ve selected and what they are for. The tags page is the de-facto map of allowed (and implicitly disallowed by omission) topics on your site. …

@drachenstern it seems like a fine idea... checking it out...
@drachenstern I'm going to do my homework now
(won't ask on SO I promise)
:)
will continue this talk whenever you ask
we uruguayans are very (too?) proud of our culture and love talking about it :)
so whenever you feel like it
or have any other question
do not hesitate!
@drachenstern see you tomorrow!

4:05 AM
@Trufa sorry, turned away from my screen for a few minutes (nearing bedtime yes?) but indeed. I learned quite a bit tonight ;)
Thank you

Oh Postgres, why do you hate me?

@drachenstern no, please. It has indeed been very interestion, I may be asking some things about your culture later

@Trufa by all means
@TimStone because it's spiteful

I didn't do anything to it!

@drachenstern see you!! thanks!

4:27 AM
GAH !!! stop the presses!
I am missing my D4 and my D10
I have the tens D10, so like 10-100
but I have no 1-10
(who uses 0 based arrays anyways?)

raises hand

FD: my language is a C-style language, so I do as well, but it's more fun this way :p

@drachenstern I think my Postgres installation stole them. You should tell it who's boss.

wonders how technical tomorrow's interview will be

4:30 AM
@TimStone /me beats @TimStone's server with a large brick

\o/

@GeorgeMarian better than admitting the dice was 00-90 and that I mistyped at first

I figure we all know that a 10-100 dice is really 00-90 tho
and that a 1-10 dice is really 0-9
Let's be fair. If you're in the room right now and didn't know that about the dice, raise your hand. If you're not sure what the hell I'm talking about raise both hands. If you have my d4 give it back
omg, I have a DESK!!! It's a miracle
anybody care to guess what I'm doing instead of going to bed? (besides chatting like a hyper 10 year old?)

Ummm....cleaning off your desk?

4:36 AM
chatting like a hyper 11-year old?

No fair, two of you cheated

No we didn't. We just observed and reported. :)

aka cheating

4:38 AM
I cheated too, you just don't know it yet.

look, when you have adonis dna you can figure this stuff out :p
@TimStone I said "two of you"
you think I'm gonna accuse rchern of cheating?

A fair point.

I value my garbage dispo ... OMG SHE STOLE MY GARBAGE DISPOSAL!!!

thank you thank you I'll be here all week try the ... ah who am I kidding?
So rchern did you ever answer my question the other day about the tshirts and the meetups?

4:40 AM
Why won't you finish?! shakes load script

Hmm
Did I know that you asked a question about them?

@TimStone type ctrl-a-b-c and watch it finish
@RebeccaChernoff I thought you did

It's done!

@drachenstern calls shenanigans

vouches for @drachenstern

4:43 AM
the transcript LIED
21 hours ago, by drachenstern
speaking of rush service, will I get my tshirt before the meetup?
I have the strangest sense of dejavu

I don't believe I saw that o:

You didn't look hard enough :o

speaking of looking hard enough ... NTH?

Indeed

I think, just to mess with you, I'm gonna play this
NINTH
I'm not sure where to put this Y on @Moshe's game so I hope he goes out next turn
AH I found the spot
a lone O
rchern would be proud of me
Apparently Moshe is still up

4:52 AM
\o/
I should find my phone hehe.

lol, perhaps
speaking of games where I have nothing to play
Alright ya'll. I'm gonna see if the dog wants to poison the grass and them I'm off to drool on my pillow.

G'night

Sweet dreams.

5:14 AM
hey how do I invite someone into chat?

If they haven't been to chat before, I don't think there's any way that you can.
Otherwise you can visit their chat profile and invite them to a room.

ah ok! but how would you even find their chat profile?

Search the users page :)

ah! ok thanks! =)

No problem!

5:20 AM
arg! =( No luck! I'm trying to invite people around for the SO meetup, there hardly is any activity on the meetup page.
@RebeccaChernoff maybe there could be a banner on the top of stackoverflow linking to the blog article for the meetup.

We're running ads in the ad rotation.

oh? Haven't seen any!
anyway thats cool then.

=)

5:36 AM
Cool. Hope there is some kinda meetup here, would be nice to See people, actual geeks.

Looks like there is one setup

?
I joined the Mumbai Group first, after that a couple of more people joined up. : meetup.com/stackoverflow/Mumbai-IN

yes, there are people signed up there. when you said "hope there is some kinda one here" I thought you meant nobody had joined you.

ah ok, but its just 4 people there, which isn't much, I just managed to get in touch with one of them whose company wants to sponsor coffee =P

explosively sneezes

5:43 AM
lol!
^sigh^ I really need to start programming but I'm just blowing the time away!
Looking for some nice podcast to listen while I code some silverlight!

coffee sounds exciting @giddy
But goa is really far, I cba to go all the way to mumbai :)

@Reno I (& my family) are tea hogs!.
I just have an empty tea cup on my table and will go for a re fill soon! =P

Ok, why is Meta the only place that still has a direct link to the chatroom in the sidebar?

@Marti That doesn't appear to be the case on my end

@Reno where are you from btw?
I'm just having tons of programmers block lately.

5:47 AM
Vasco-da-gama, Goa

Cool! I've been to Margao once! My mum lived in Goa thru most of her school.
@Reno I didn't realize quick enough you were talking about the meetup! *doi!

@TimStone None of english.stackexchange.com, cooking.stackexchange.com, or stackoverflow.com have the 'chat' box on the sidebar anymore.
I just checked Super User, however, and it still has it.

Stack Overflow never had it because of the traffic levels, lemme check the other two.

Does team@foo.SE work for all SE sites?

Hmm, you're right...weird.

5:50 AM
@giddy are you from bandra ?

If this is another envelope-style debacle, I swear I'm gonna hit somebody upside the head.

@Marti Eh, I think this one is a bug :P

also my mum is a D'souza too.

@Reno =D Yep we're Dsouza's here. Nope from Bombay Central.

I'm going to speculate and say that sites that don't have Community ads turned on are also not showing the chat ads by mistake now.
@MichaelMrozek I think that someone once said somewhere that it did, but given how non-specific the first part of this sentence was I'm not confident in what I'm saying. :P

5:58 AM
@giddy I've been there :) mainly to check out futardos

ah! Yea I have two guitars, a violin and a keyboard from there =P

batsignals @Jin

Except I'm seeing community ads on those sites. In fact, I don't remember if I've seen ads on them before.
