@NickCraver couldn't we get essentially the same info from the API?
"answers": [
  {
   "answer_id": 5358752,
   "accepted": false,
   "answer_comments_url": "/answers/5358752/comments",

   "community_owned": false,
then just total up the accepted vs upvotes
one quick question, for Unsung Hero, does the accepted answer have to have a TOTAL score of zero or just no votes at all

@badpssockpuppet playing the demo right now. pretty fun

1:35 PM
@MylesGray Not sure what that's in reference to...I was talking about the SEDE data update :)

@MylesGray I always thought it was no upvotes (meaning 0 +1's)

@NickCraver Yes but all the SEDE data can be emulated (with much more relevant current data) from the API
I am working on something at the moment to try and provide the most common queries on SEDE through the API to get up to the minute data
@ircmaxell I'm not so sure I thought it may be a total answer score of 0?

@MylesGray not as easily, for example most aggregate things
the SEDE/data dump serves a different purpose really

It could be, not sure

@NickCraver yes very true, but for common things like "How Unsung and I?" "Jon Skeet Comparison" etc are all very doable
but as you say, large scale interpretations are a lot harder

1:39 PM
yeah just depends what you're after

My grand plan is to make a Badge progress bar/meter type thing
So I dont think aggregates really have much to do with that
@ircmaxell Ill post it on meta, Jeff will know :P

lol

it's a total score of 0 btw
;)

@NickCraver thank you sir :)

Ah ok

1:41 PM
good so im 3 downvotes off unsung :D

@MylesGray some of the badges you cannot do that for...the idea isn't to be able to map all of this stuff.
morning folks

@RebeccaChernoff Not to be able to map all the badges progress?

or all the odata stuff?

even using odata you won't be able to check progress for all badges.

1:43 PM
Oh okay, well... it would be nice for me at least if no one else wants it, I just like to know my standing

I'm not going to get unsung

But the vast majority are easy to check for

Y'all signed up for a MeetUp? (: meetup.com/stackoverflow

boo, I miss both the London and the NYC meetups
(leave london on the day it's happening, and get back after it happens in NYC)

haha! Two badges in a row today! Deputy and Strunk & White (I had to tell somebody -_- ...

1:45 PM
nice

@MylesGray yea thats just what I was thinking, progress bars for badges...

@MylesGray I disagree with that, there's a lot of data not exposed, so many badges simple aren't calculable
plus, some are a sliding progress, e.g. total votes & % of total type combos

@NickCraver yea but the ones that are could have a bar.. and only a few of them are..

It's more than "just a few" that you won't be able to check.

maybe simple ones like Strunk & White or Civic duty.. .can be first.. especially since they are attainable with a little work and it would encourage people..

1:47 PM
yeah, i'm not saying don't do it, absolutely go nuts...but many you won't be able to do, just go down the list :)

:) The last month I've just been wondering how close I was to strunk and white.

@NickCraver It isnt hard to work out total votes, percentages for type combos yes but most of it with a little creativity i think is

Looks like I made about 75+ edits just this month =P

@myles - i don't believe we expose what the vote is on, so yes it is difficult (read:impossible) to get most vote statuses
e.g. % of votes on questions vs answers

creativity isn't going to help you when the data isn't available.
but it seems you're just going to have to try before you understand (;

1:49 PM
let's take an example, how would you do electorate?

@RebeccaChernoff =P

Oh for electorate and things yes
@NickCraver Yeah I was just looking at that one

oh yea. true didn't realize. .there is no way to track that from the API no?

nope, we don't expose vote data....hopefully for obvious reasons :)

@giddy No they dont expose it to stop people going "hey look I +'d you give me rep"
the same for negs

1:51 PM
@MylesGray true.

more-so for negatives I'd think

yeah

but yeah bad idea to expose it all around

exposing negs could be quite bad

@NickCraver I was suggesting something on the lines of... it being an SE engine feature. I mean, you go to the badges page and see progress bars on appropriate badges.

1:52 PM
Yeah that would be a problem, it would be nice to have a "total question upvotes" and "total answer upvotes" in the user info
that way the questions are still anon
would that not be okay?

@giddy - propose it on meta! that would be quite an expensive feature though, i wouldn't expect it soon :)

@giddy I did that before
It got closed as exact duplicate

@giddy, it has been [status-declined] several times.

@MylesGray oh?

Q: Progress percentage for Badges

Myles Gray Possible Duplicates: Allow users to see badge progress Show the progress left on badge achievement unlockings I think for the more long term Badges there should be some kind of progress bar beside it to show how close/far away you are from receiving it. Much like this: http://hwbot...

1:53 PM
oh lol! =P

Like I said, that isn't the point of the badges.

ah there you have it, @Rebecca knows her meta =P

@MylesGray oh man that is one picture! =P

@NickCraver would it be acceptable to have a "total votes on questions" and "total votes on answers" in the API?

Its interesting though how badges hypnotize you into doing work! =S

1:54 PM
there is no personal voting statistics/data that way

possibly, again that's an API question, for StackApps.com (that's kevin's area mostly)
I can't think of any bad exposure there

What part of "these aren't meant to be fully tracked, they're supposed to be mysterious" is hard to understand? (;

@RebeccaChernoff spoil sport ;)
Its a fun little project for myself

@NickCraver @RebeccaChernoff oh one quick off question. Is (or will) SO get some kinda facelift?

18
A: Electorate, Pundit, etc badge progress

Jeff AtwoodSome of the badges are supposed to be surprises, not World of Warcraft style level grinds based on numbers. I worry that if we provide too many metrics: it becomes noise, like a bunch of inscrutable F-16 cockpit gauges -- how are all these numbers useful except for these specific badges? the b...

1:55 PM
I assumed the new colors were part of a whole facelift process...

some of the badges are supposed to be surprises

@giddy I beleive @Jin has more in the can for it

If you won't believe me, believe Jeff. q:

without going into detail, badges really, really aren't designed for this from an architecture standpoint currently - so this would be a huge change just to support the UI

@RebeccaChernoff the best xbox360 games (orangebox) have achievement progress :)

1:56 PM
@giddy eventually, though Jin's busy non-stop with SE sites (and us adding a popup and making him style 80 sites on a whim...)

in a way that is true. New badges should be a nice surprise! =)

@NickCraver once you have the right tools CSS editing isnt too bad :)

@MylesGray that's actually a requirement to be "certified" or whatever it is

@NickCraver 80????

@giddy hes counting betas

1:57 PM
@MylesGray it is when there's this many sites....any who said we used raw CSS? :)

80 is low-balling it by a bit.

80 that need styling typically, there are sites, beta sites and metas
i think we're at ~100 now?

@RebeccaChernoff Around 90, though right now more than half of those have the same style

@NickCraver oh I see, you use an MVC backend? And use some kind of nice content based CSS injection?

@NickCraver hm! true. true. But just.. so looks so so dull compared to some sites...

1:58 PM
93.

there's also minimal stylesheets and such that need love when we add new things as well

Well, the two same style. Meta and original sketchy

@MylesGray LESS

Ah I see, okay nice, that makes life easier :)

Apple and Programmers look so awesome! Especially the badges on Programmers! wow!
Cooking and English too.. REALLY well designed

2:00 PM
@MylesGray we use a not-completely-standard version of dotLess, customized to support a build process much better, you can find our version here: github.com/NickCraver/dotless

just check homeimprovement.se another awesome design! =P

@NickCraver very cool, I'll take a look at it, the workings of such a large website are extremely interesting

indeed they are, kinda hoping we do a blog post on the past week's behind-the-scenes, not sure what's in the pipe though
unfortunately explaining most things takes a ton of context and it's not worth it

Yeah I know the feeling, None the less very interesting and not something I often get to see
Dad sees me this morning and sends me an email at half time from the rugby match saying happy birthday... he totally forgot :P

SE needs some Russians!

2:12 PM
@RebeccaChernoff bad idea

Theres no meet up in Ireland :(

Oh I missed that one

Hmmm, should I join...

2:14 PM
@RebeccaChernoff - what if we're afraid of sunlight?

@NickCraver What's "sunlight"?

@MylesGray That 'orrible 'orrible yellow stuff that's suppose to give you cancer

@NickCraver Sunset for you will be 7:46 pm, show up fashionably late and you'll be safe! (:
and yes, you should definitely join ^__^

@YiJiang Hmm.. I'm ginger so sounds like I'd just burst into flames

Well, somebody's already joined in and selected a pub as the location
Which is unfortunately, because that means I won't be able to join (legally speaking)

2:19 PM
So add a comment.

Its also not cheap (but hey, what is?)

Damn. The tourney pool worth the most money is my worst bracket after the first round.
Errr, second round, stupid expansion.

Does anyone know if the HTML tag <base> has been deprecated?

@MylesGray Its not, but I don't think it should be used

YOU
26
Q: Is it recommended to use the <base> html tag?

TchalvakI just found out about the <base> HTML tag. I have never seen it actually used anywhere before. Are there pitfalls to its use that means I should avoid it? The fact that I have never noticed it in use on a modern production site (or any site) makes me leery of it, though it seems like it...

2:24 PM
I would leave it up to the CMS or whatever server-side technology to keep the URLs consistent

Okay cool
@YOU thanks :)

What do you think? @balpha's is also pretty good, now that his graph's got the zooming in bit done

YOU
I like the graph at stackexchange.com , but your zoom in, zoom out good too @YiJiang

Hey, cool, I'd never noticed that

YOU
I just knew that today too :)

2:33 PM
the one SE has zooming also

YOU
by mistakenly clicked it

They bought a commercial license for highcharts.js, hmmmm...

YOU
looks great

@YOU those dev licenses are relatively cheap

> Single Developer License: 360 USD - Buy now

YOU
2:41 PM
I see, highchart's looks like quite customizable according to page source.

Well, given that I hack together that chart using a free SVG library (the same type of technology the highchart lib uses), that is rather expensive

@YiJiang thats the one
not bad for unlimited usage

Of course, the code is nowhere near as good or customizable, but hmmm...
Why are they pricing it as 'per developer' though?
Why not, say, per site?

@YiJiang More monies
@YiJiang I like per dev pricing as it means you can do unlimited sites with the same license
If it was per site then over time value for money goes down

Hey only me and one more so far for the mumbai meetup. Somehow I'm not surprised. =( Do join in if anyone is around in mumbai. : meetup.com/stackoverflow/Mumbai-IN

2:44 PM
@giddy @Reno is also from India I believe, but I'm not sure which part of India

@YiJiang is that THEIR source?

@MylesGray For SE.com's chart, yes
They're loading jQuery 1.3.1 and Mootools at the same time

yeah needs more libs
definately not enough

@MylesGray Highcharts supports Prototype too, lets stick that in as well

@YiJiang ah, don't think there are any active users from here(mumbai), I think the traffic from india might be largely temporary (1 question) users

2:47 PM
@YiJiang and while were at it, YUI might not be supported but hey, its worth adding it "just incase"

@YiJiang where are you seeing 1.3.1 or mootools?

@NickCraver Reputation tab on SE global profile

i'm not seeing that?

Mootools looks like part of the template for Highcharts, but jQuery 1.3.1 is odd

man... stackapps.com is dead 1 view in 45mins and the question below mine had 1 view in 3hours

2:48 PM

@YiJiang Highcharts says it used raw JS?

@NickCraver You're right, force reloading it now shows a lot less scripts included
Might have been the cache then, hmmm

methinks you have some user script =P

@NickCraver None of the userscripts affect the global profile, and none of them uses Mootools

i could be wrong, but pretty sure Mootools isn't in the codebase anywhere - that could have changed recently
that was something else you were looking at

2:51 PM
@NickCraver Most likely, yes
Either the add on got mixed up or I did
Say, which 'About me' does the global profile use?

ah that's the script load profile for here: highcharts.com
not sure what's pulled there
site with highest rep, if I had to guess

either SO or oldest account iirc
find someone who doesn't have a SO account or created a SO account after (:

Is there any way you can choose, like chat does?

I cant believe this... I have to open my working project in a new window from SO chat because I just get sucked towards the favicon with a (1) on it

Q: Allow users to set the "base" profile that your stackexchange.com profile inherits from

Grace NoteMy assumption is that the Stack Exchange Profile you get on stackexchange.com is based on either: Your Stack Overflow account, regardless of anything Your oldest account Unfortunately, it's hard to find users who both have a younger Stack Overflow account, and that it looks visibly different ...

2:55 PM
Oh, right. And I even upvoted that, hmmmm...

it is indeed your oldest profile

Question. I flag an answer as spam/offensive, then Jeff deletes it. Is it a -10 to my weight still?

@badpssockpuppet No, it should be +. And it should be 10 for posts, 5 for comments I think, unless they changed it

I think it is

3:05 PM
deleting via the control panel validates the flags, saying yes these were legit flags

@NickCraver So deleting via the 'delete' button on the post itself wouldn't clear the flag, leaving "dismiss" as the only flag-clearing option?
I ask because I can be on both sides of the equation :)
@YiJiang Thanks for the correction there

deleting directly leaves the flags in the mod queue, they can be marked either invalid or valid from there
deleting from there is like clicking valid then delete, giving a + weight
deleting from the page then being marked valid in the queue after has the same net effect

hm, I thought offensive flags only had a "dismiss" link... I might be wrong.

on comments only

Oh, yeah, I guess that makes a difference.
Thanks.

3:10 PM
you can dismiss flags on a question/answer, but frankly that's a lot of clicks, i'm not sure anyone does that since the queue @marc made

Ohhh crap - this reminds me I totally forgot to look at comment weight dismissal stuff for someone. >_<

i don't have a total but there are a lot of flags on SO, so we try to be as efficient as possible there
I dealt with ~80 this morning and it barely made a dent :)

Wait, you're saying the floating ui makes things harder?

no no, the on-post mod menu

@NickCraver In a way I'm glad Gaming will never reach SO levels :D

3:15 PM
used to be the only way
SO has a lot of issues other sites don't just by scale, some are simple some are hard...e.g. it's own database, the scale of google crawling, flags per day, hundreds of things like that
user search by name? cake on anything but SO

@NickCraver oh. It seemed you were talking present tense.

i rarely know what i'm talking about :)

hope this isnt too subjective for SO:

Myles GrayI use TextMate to do my HTMl,PHP,JS/Other languages and CSSEdit to do my CSS. The phrase 'more equal' doesn't appear anywhere in the actual article, so I'd say its more likely a typo than anything else

A(g64, g64)

@ircmaxell that stinks of macro abuse :P

5:03 PM
@YiJiang It's also a reference to Animal Farm by George Orwell

@ChrisF I know, its required reading in secondary school here

@YiJiang Good! My youngest is doing it as a play this year/
Do you get to read 1984 as well?

No, but I read it anyway

Good for you. I must re-read both - it's been too long.

5:33 PM
@ChrisF Me too.
So it seems that NATO is waging war on Lybia, or somesuch.

Yes - depressing really. I don't know what else they could do though

Also, Sarkozy speaks English nicely.

@badpssockpuppet That makes a change - French presidents usually make a point of not speaking English

I'm watching tv.repubblica.it/copertina/sarkozy-via-libera-all-attacco/… (might be blocked outside Italy, and has an annoying translation in French)
There's probably a better link but I cba to find one

Can anyone explain why there's no name displayed with this question? The user's name happens to be D.N. Is it due to the fact that there are only 2 letters in the name? Is this a known bug?

Yes, that's a known bug.
Or at least, I've seen it before many times, even on SO

@GeorgeMarian The user wasn't registered when the question was migrated, I think, so the front page still shows the question as if it was an unregistered user.

Hello guys

It's been appropriately associated now, but I imagine there's nothing in that process that causes the front page view to be updated correctly. I think it used to show the user name regardless, but it doesn't anymore (and I think someone asked why that was, but I'm not sure if there was ever an answer)
'Ello @Jacob

@TimStone Ah, yes. Now I see that it was migrated. /facepalm That said, that should update. Sheesh. :)

7:04 PM
@TimStone How was your birthday?

Uneventful, but otherwise good.

What's up Jac?
@TimStone those are usually the best kind
So why have I been at the office for 90 minutes and I haven't started working?

@drachenstern I agree, uneventful ones are the best

@TimStone No hangover, eh? ;)

@drachenstern Office on a Saturday?

7:05 PM
@GeorgeMarian Unfortunately not ;)
@drachenstern This is a good question :P

@Jacob :p it's called "work" ;)

@TimStone That said, I drank less after turning 21. :D

@drachenstern I know hehe... i work 24/7 on my "startup"...

Yeah, I had a bit of a head start on that, so I've mellowed out a bit lately what with work sucking up most of my time and all. Although really, I could use a bit more drinking to manage that, heh.

Oh cool I was accepted into BizSpark

7:10 PM
@TimStone I find that a nice bottle of scotch works well in that situation. It's expensive enough that you will probably not guzzle it, yet you can find a decent bottle at reasonable prices.

This is true. nods

This is very true. I need a nice bottle of scotch.
I have also found that red wine suits me more now that I'm post 30
I'm not sure how that works for other people, but I noticed that's how it worked out for me.
So, stories of alcohol: There's a rather nice club around the corner from the apartment. My sister in law is having her graduation party there in May. They do a deal where they rent a boothish thing, give a 12 person headcount, and you pay a flat rate. They also provide 4 bottles of alcohol, and you pay a difference on each bottle for the ones that go over a certain value.
So she's thinking 2 vodka and 2 tequila. I'm like ... um no.

Hahah

Maybe one tequila, one vodka, one rum and one whiskey
except the girls all do like tequila, and there's that one line in that one song, so maybe it should be two tequila and one vodka and (one rum or one whiskey)
Or I might just pony up and buy a fifth bottle
So am I really weird or does tequila not suit anyone else here? I can normally drink anything, but you give me tequila and I'm all {hurl}

Rum and tequila are generally a no-go for me.

7:22 PM
I can do rum, if it's mixed in something else. I can do vodka, at the end of the night.
But if I were to get whiskey or scotch, I would be the only one enjoying it, the rest would be all :blech:
Of course, this is the same group of people that think that nattylite is a good beer.
Or Bud Light

lmao

Just found out about the Physics site design being withdrawn

Ah yes, they made quite a fuss..

Why was it withdrawn?
Too much internal strife?

7:33 PM
The whole light on dark bit.

I have a theory. It's not a great theory, but I want some feedback:
We need a "sea-tag" to join "tag" and "meta-tag" except it's orthogonal to those two. It's a way to post "stack exchange alternate" sites associated to one post. What I'm thinking is that each of the tech-oriented sites are cross-site worthy. The SE backend should be like a pot of spaghetti, and each front-end should help you get an organized view of questions that have pertinence to the front-end that you're choosing. So like Apple questions could often be cross-posted to SU. Same for my dba
But I think that means rethinking the entire concept of SE2.0 ... maybe it might have some concept in SE3.0
That would also allow cross-domain rep.
rep for this site + (rep for other sites / 10) or something

Ah - so if I select "Apple" (say) I'd get questions that are posted either on Super User or the Apple site. Webmasters would get questions from Server Fault and Webmasters etc.

So some questions would only apply to SU, for instance. Or some things would only apply to math. But questions like math + phsyics or EL&U + writing or writing + SF
@ChrisF But you would need a way to choose the sites (or have them be assigned like we do VtC) for the question

Assuming they were Apple or Webmaster type questions of course

But essentially yes.

7:38 PM
Interesting. I think it's been raised before though.

If I have a tremendously high rep on Apple, that should mean something for apple tagged questions on SU.
I'm sure it has. But was it raised during SE1.0 or SE2.0 and how was it framed?
I know, for a fact, that it is currently anti-SE2.0, it would need a lot of massaging
I'm curious if that turns it into Quora tho.

It was certainly prior to SE2.0 and I think it might have been prior SE1.0 - when there were only the three sites

Yeah, so I think they still need a little more time to flesh out where they are now, but I think it's a pretty solid theory, with where they are now, and it could be made to move to something fluid on the backend.
It might destroy the concept of Area51 tho, with the private betas ... I'm still not entirely sure.

However, I'm sure that "they" will say the current concept of separate sites with migration gets you want you want.
However, you're idea might have merit for improving the Interesting and Ignored tags in the first instance.
If that works then there's no reason why it couldn't be extended to all sites.

Maybe that's the key, maybe I'm thinking of a meta-portal style, which would be better as an app on top of the API?

7:44 PM
s/you're/your in my last but one post

@ChrisF you're here often enough for those to be overlooked ;)

8:09 PM
Mas tequila! ;)
Interesting idea @drachenstern.

If you had full control over the questions you saw it might stop people proposing "sub sites" on Area 51

That's sort of what I'm thinking yes.
But then you potentially miss out on generic questions, if you're only focused on specific ones.
Something about mixing the "hot questions" list with the tagged questions at SO speed
I'm gonna mull it over some more.

8:33 PM
Ugh, why did MySQL switch to using CMake?

To piss you off. I heard them talking about it. It was tagged

Ah, well I guess that makes sense.
Oracle getting back at me and what not, heh. :P

9:00 PM
So has anyone not heard about the full moon tonight?

SUPERMOON

@drachenstern Here what? I thought that was last night?

shakes a fist at his local talking heads

But the whole "supermoon" thing is nonsense anyway.

9:04 PM
Good deal, it was all sortsa cloudy last night.

If you want the Moon to look big, watch it as it rises! Everything you need to know about the Moon Illusion: http://is.gd/Tn5xVM
That tweet's not got the right link, the one you want is blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2011/03/18/…

I just like going around and shouting (in capital letters) SUPERMOON at people.

lol
shouting in capital letters do you?
ok, I'm at the office. I'm not writing code. Do we see a problem? I think I need a soda and some better music and I'll be good to go

@drachenstern You're cleaning the carpets?
Dang it, Rhythmbox just because adding meta data to a file that's currently playing moves it out of the "unkown" list, doesn't mean that you should stop playing it and go on to the following song.

It's not what I expected.

Right, WTF is it doing?

So you see my problem right?
