Oh I am going to just have too much fun with Pekka's question, LOL

Something like that yes
You'll need a way to register slashcommands and function pointers, but otherwise that's the gyst of it
and since there won't be a function associated with the key, you don't really have to check if the key is in the hash

@TheRenamedException What Pekka question?

you could just assume it is and fire it when found, but if you want to display the table of commands you'll need to check for not found

Q: Can we have backticks in comments back, please?

PekkaSince a few days, the old backtick trick to circumvent the minimum comment length doesn't work any more. Comments now show up as yes ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` can we have that back please? There are valid use cases for short comments like "yes" and "no" and others - I like to think I usually stick to...

@TheRenamedException Oh, okay. I thought you meant a new one.

7:07 PM
Nope
Just reading through the other clever hacks
There's a daily vote limit for comments?
Damnit now I just need to star everything in here instead.
@drachenstern Sorry, I completely ignored these messages for no apparent reason, LOL

@TheRenamedException lol, no, its because you were reading ravenously.
Also, don't you have work to do? Ostensibly I do too ;)

@drachenstern Yes, actually I do, LOL

I should probably break for lunch tho, before I go too much further

oy (: double oy!

I need to consider how to do some ajaxian record management between a page that's geared to postback and a new requirement for ajax

7:16 PM
@drachenstern What you propose is a better solution. This allows the new userscript's slashcommands to appear in the help menu. I will code this.

30 mins ago, by Nyuszika7H
@JoshsSocks Yeah, U+0323.

@TheRenamedException Now can you talk to my boss and explain that I know what the hell I'm doing? ;) :p

@TheRenamedException Heh. :P

@drachenstern Sure!

@TheRenamedException :p

7:22 PM
You got it @Nyuszika7H

@TheRenamedException Yep.
@TheRenamedException proposed an edit on this

A: Can we have backticks in comments back, please?

The Renamed ExceptionYeṣ̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣̣

I reject. My answers are perfect. NOBODY MUST EVER EDIT ANYTHING I SAY!
In seriousness I couldn't see what you tried to change?

@TheRenamedException Added more dots, made your line longer…

I added the minimum to get to 30

Ok, time for lunch and homegoing

7:32 PM
@drachenstern Enjoy it!

@TheRenamedException as I actually do so :p

It's hilarious that A51 Discussion Zone has a Precognitive badge. ( Yes, yes, I know. )

Wow, I'm on the way to another meta rep cap, lol
I think that means I am not getting enough work done

A: Nicer <kbd> tag?

Popular DemandNo. The update to AskDifferent makes <kbd>-enclosed things look like Apple keys, which is fine for an Apple site, but shouldn't replace the default network-wide. The new one is pretty, I'll give you that... but as you know, Apple is required to have better design than everyone else. Seriou...

A: what event fires when ajax request have sent into network?

Nyuszika7HI think you're looking for .ajaxComplete(). $('#el').ajaxComplete(function() { … });

What what?

@DanGrossman I don't understand why that was rolled back, but I could just be not understanding a reference.

7:54 PM
Spite.

@PopularDemand HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA a loophole. How interesting.

@TheRenamedException I have the power to give you a nice question badge. What do I get in return?

@MichaelMrozek ummmmm
shhhh. They are watching

I'll take 500 rep please

@drachenstern Loophole?
@TheRenamedException I'll do it for 300.

Q: What event fires when an AJAX request is sent?

alegaWhat handler should I use to catch the moment when an AJAX request has just been sent to the server within document.ready?

What kind of CSS do people use to style forms? I never seemed to be able to get it right.

@Moshe I am not sure I understand the question?

When making a form, what CSS properties are used to make the forms match the surrounding page?
Example:
See the form
(removed)

8:22 PM
input[type="text"], input[type="password"], textarea {
  padding: 6px 10px;
  width: 250px;
  color: #444444;
  font-weight: normal;
  font-family: "AxelRegular", "Lucida Grande", "Verdana", sans-serif;
  font-size: 18px;
  line-height: 24px;
  background: #cccccc;
  background: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, from(#eeeeee), to(#d4d4d4));
  background: -moz-linear-gradient(#eeeeee, #d4d4d4);
  text-shadow: 0 1px 1px #ffffff;
  border: none;
  -webkit-box-shadow: inset 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.5), 0 1px 1px #ffffff;

Nyuszika7HHere you go: <!DOCTYPE html> <html lang='en'> <head> <meta charset='utf-8' /> <title>Title</title> <script src='/js/head.js'></script> <!-- Below are inline and cannot be a separate JS ...

@TheRenamedException Uhmm...Yeah, I don't see why we couldn't make that work.

@DanGrossman That's SO nice!

8:44 PM
@DanGrossman Thanks!

What the heck was Community doing here?

night :)

@badp Oh, right, those get owned by Community.
That's a extra-terrible revision to an already-terrible question.

Clearly whipping is in order

8:49 PM
How did you find the revision URL?

@PopularDemand Dichotomic search.
"500... too much. 250... too early. 300... silly Lord Tagamus fella."

@badp It helps to know the URL scheme, eh?

@PopularDemand Yeah, browser history helps.

sitename slash suggested-edits slash number... sitename slash suggested-edits slash number... sitename slash suggested-edits slash number...
Ow, we collided. Sorry 'bout that.

Meh, you improved the title and dug up the link
and I still got my 2 reps.
It's all good.

9:00 PM
@drachenstern yeah you were right. i really should have been working. just got my ass handed to me by my boss for being behind. will I every learn? :-/

A: What is Stack Overflow's business model?

user157455Joel's right -- you don't have to pay back Venture Capitalists. You can go broke leaving them holding the bag and walk away from it to get another job at some other company, like the idiots EE's VCs hired back in the last century. Or go back to blogging and speaking at seminars. Nobody at EE eve...

shakes head

I got this email:
> I have an idea for a game. I do not know much about programming but I believe that it would not be a basic game.
> I know I am not being specific, but at this time I would not want to give away the idea (perhaps it is a good one...) Can I get an idea on your pricing structure? (obviously depending on the complexity). Also who would own the code and app? Basic things like that.
How would you respond?

All programs need a structure before they can be priced. You can offer a price of $25.000 USD to write it sight unseen up to 600 hours of labor

@drachenstern 25K ?

Argh, another collision. I need to get off of SE for the rest of the day.

9:07 PM
This is from an individual.

Yes. If it's THAT good of an app ...
Otherwise they may want to share with you the game so you can accurately try to price it

@drachenstern Makes sense.

Notice I said sight unseen.

Yep. Makes sense, as I said.
eeek! Gizmodoe has redesigned!

Im on iOS @Moshe. Slower updates

9:10 PM
@drachenstern I'm on Mac now.
@drachenstern Ah
@drachenstern - How do you assuage fears that the developer will steal the idea?

Sorry @Moshe, in case you can't tell, I can't chat much right now, lol

I offer to sign an NDA

Hello
Do you think the 165k messages in The Tavern make this the most active chat room in StackExchange?
errr.. 195k

It certainly has the highest noise:signal ratio. =)

9:32 PM
@TylerChacha Hello. Nippon is free today only. itunes.com/apps/nippon
@drachenstern Hrm... interesting. Is an NDA a non-compete also?
> Sorry for the delayed response, I'm extremely busy. Yes, I did make the [Redacted] app.
> I can't know if your game is basic until I hear more about it. I also cant price it until I know more about it. No developer will be able to give you a quote until they know what it is that they will be programming.

@Moshe it can be. That's one of the ideas that you should explore when considering legal representation (whom and the need for one). Since you're still student-aged, see if there's a local law Uni that has some students that can consult for nearly free.

@drachenstern Good idea.
I still can't believe that I'm giving away my app. Ugh. I'm going to be really disappointed when I have only a few downloads when I get my stats tomorrow - even though it's free - shows how much people enjoy it.
</pessimism>

I didn't realize you went from $1.99 to $0.00
People downloading it only means that they've heard of it, not how much they do or don't enjoy it.
85%+ of my apps I downloaded because of the icon, usually.
Or the description matched some keyword I was looking for
Of those 85%, I've probably kept 60%, maybe.

@drachenstern Just for today.

So consider those two things.

9:38 PM
@drachenstern How's my icon? (Honesty helps.)

It's rather dry

@drachenstern Ok.

You've got about 8 seconds to grab their attention, between the title and the icon.
Nippon sounds like Nissan to me, so even tho I know what it is, I associate it with cars
The pagoda outline design looks neat, if I'm eating sushi.
but if I'm looking to play a game, ... :\

@drachenstern Really? Interesting...

Also bear in mind that the most graphic design I do is with <div>s and <span>s

9:40 PM
I could spice it up a bit... I am working on 1.1.0
I started doing a screencast, but didn't finish it.
You think optional background music would make the gameplay a bit more stimulating?

I despise games that make me listen to their music/soundeffects over my iPod
I don't listen to game sounds except occasionally in racing games
If WwF has sounds I don't know it
If some tetris clone has sounds, I don't know it

Okay, hear hear.
(no pun intended)

I did smirk a little

In case I'm not the last person to hear about it: mathurl.com

guess since it's launch day that would explain why tho
@PopularDemand Interesting idea ... sweet

9:43 PM
@drachenstern Yes, it is slow.

Now to go annoy some of my friends :D

@drachenstern Enjoy!

Q: Forums that compell one to read?

AlexI want to create a forum for a very specific, somewhat fight-club-like area of information. The participants need to be unique, not people I know. To be precise, it needs to be an entirely random set of participants. To do this I am going on the assumption that whatever a potential viewer sees...

Does anyone think it will cause problems to put a CSS background-color on an <img>?

@TheRenamedException No, although it's pretty much useless unless you also add some padding

nods

10:24 PM
@YiJiang That's the point
It's a 1x1 transparent gif

@YiJiang Could be a transparent image.

I am trying to make a 9px by 9px shaded square in CSS
but I need a variable number of them, centered
so they must be display: inline; and when I do that I lose control of width and height, so I am using an image

Would inline-block not work?

Doesn't work in IE, right?
I thought there was a reason I could never use inline-block
Really? Someone starred that?
Oh. Looks at Moshe

@TheRenamedException ducks
</edits>

10:32 PM
throws an inline-block at Moshe

@drachenstern @Zypher, @Fosco - You think the ability to trade items with friends is worth adding?

Much better -- that was star-worthy!

@TheRenamedException It made me laugh, so, star

@Moshe no I don't personally. Can you make a compelling game reason why to do that?

10:34 PM
@drachenstern Thanks, is that IE 7?

@drachenstern It adds a multiplayer dimension. The game becomes social. You can work with friends to score higher.
I am also considering adding the ability to purchase cart/game extensions for real money
Thoughts?

@TheRenamedException Version 8.0.7600.16385
@Moshe but the game was never social to begin with
What's the compelling reason to do it?
@Moshe it detracts from the concept of the game

@drachenstern Valid point.

If this were something that I played and leveled up for a long time, and that took me several days of gameplay to get anything useful, sure. But it's not. It's a 10 minute addictive game.
@TheRenamedException yw of course

@drachenstern sorry boss was talking to me, I was showing him the new slideshow design he asked for

10:40 PM
@TheRenamedException never you worry

@drachenstern Do you have any suggestions to improve gameplay?

Is that inline-block gonna work for you?
@Moshe I've already shared the ones I had, was waiting patiently for a new version to see how the new gameplay feels

@drachenstern I think the images are working for us, but I will test inline block for next time

@drachenstern Okay, I've modified the Funazushi to be rarer.

10:41 PM
I think it was IE7 that didn't support inline block maybe? I'm sure 6 didn't

@TheRenamedException indeed, it should be less manip too because you're talking about dropping a few elements from the dom ;)

@TheRenamedException - sitepalette.com - Lotsa purple

Maybe that was all it was, from this time last year when we did support IE6

@drachenstern This is done via a template
Check the source, I am proud of it :-)
@Moshe digitalfruition.com more purple

10:43 PM
@TheRenamedException I rather meant that it's more lightweight (even if only via a few elements) so the browser has less to deal with ;)

@drachenstern gotcha
JS picks that up, and knows to create a slideshow

@TheRenamedException I'mma smack you some tho:
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
<script type="text/javascript"
Seriously Josh?

@drachenstern must be my dropdowns?

@TheRenamedException nice
@TheRenamedException perhaps, but still that's kinda ugly ;)

@drachenstern much of this has not been switched over to the new ThemeObject ssytem
It's largely dynamically generated, so
OH!
Nevermind @drachenstern, please stand by....

10:46 PM
^^- Tahrir square in Wisconsin?

@drachenstern Not seriously. Gone now!

@TheRenamedException Where?

lol, I think I found a bug in his system :(

@Moshe the 10,000 script includes from
@drachenstern what, that I had minify turned off?

10:47 PM
@TheRenamedException you left so quickly
or said you were leaving

I left to get this slideshow done, came back to ask for help :-)

Yay that's better

Ride is leaving cya'.

@TheRenamedException what's the help needed?

@Moshe later
@drachenstern the inline block stuff :-)
It seems to be working, just needed to confirm
And thanks for reminding me there were so many JS includes Cole. I have turned minify back on, my client will be thankful when their site loads faster :-)

10:49 PM
@TheRenamedException so are you asking a question or ?
@TheRenamedException haha, I bet

@drachenstern I was. I got my answer. Thanks! :-)

I will try an inline block next time, don't have access to the IE testbed right now

@drachenstern To Meta!

I need a repro
Go there and search for rest
Then delete the text from the box
I know why and I know what the fix is

What about it?

11:09 PM
That the pagination disappears when it restores all the tags
It should restore the pagination if it's going to restore the tags

Ah, yes...

See the bug?
I'm not seeing a dupe on meta

Q: When you filter the user list you lose the pagination bar

Juan ManuelWhen you filter the user list by typing anything in the search box, the pagination bar dissapears, and it doesn't reappear until you refresh the page. Even clearing the textbox doesn't work.
