Q: Infinite Scrolling - [Never Click Another Page Number Again!]

George Edison About Have you ever been reading through a post on a Stack Exchange site with a lot of answers and you had to keep clicking the next page link? Wouldn't it be nice if you didn't have to do that? Well now you don't! Introducing Infinite Scrolling. Just keep scrolling down the page and the...

Eh?

5:14 AM
Hm?

huh?
I'm not really sure on a title to a question I'm about to ask.

scratches head

I don't want to put a general title like "is the JSON well formated"
gist: Question, 2011-10-03 05:19:18Z
I would like to know whether this JSON script example I made is well formatted and whether it does make sense to put the information like this.

    {"menu": {
      "drinks": [
        {"coke": "20"},
    	{"pepsi": "20"},
    	{"water": "20"}
      ],
      "junk-food": [
        {"hamburger": "40"},
    	{"fries": "20"},
    	{"pizza": "20"}
      ]
    }}

I already validated the script with http://jsonlint.com/ but still I would like to a little more since I'm very new.

For some context on the use of the script, I'm going to parse the script with Python.

It is meant to organize elements of a GUI that will look more or less like this:

![enter image description here][1]

On the second window, a listbox similar to the first one will appear with the corresponding item and respective price.

 - Is it correct JSON?
 - Does this structure make sense?

Do you have any opinion on a possible title?

You don't trust jsonlint? :P

@TimStone hehe no, I know it's valid, but I just made that stuff up, so it can't be too good
I started putting { and [ everywhere
and on the first try, boom, valid
I don't trust myself that much.

Q: Correct use of JSON for a simple restaurant menu description

TrufaI would like to know whether this JSON script example I made is well formatted and whether it does make sense to put the information like this. {"menu": { "drinks": [ {"coke": "20"}, {"pepsi": "20"}, {"water": "20"} ], "junk-food": [ {"hamburger": "40"}, {"fries": "20"}...

That will have to do.

Wow.

yikes; I'd better clear that down a bit!

Yep :p But most of them are from Community
I see only 216 flags in that tab - why?

it looks like people have gone crazy w/ "not an answer"

not an answer – 6 hours ago× 11
@Marc I see only 216 flags in that tab - why? What's differene between topbar count & that counter in "Flags" tab?

there are a lot of flags that you don't have access to; I'll try to find a few moments to make that number reflect that - I added extra caching there the other day, which might be related (i.e. cache shared between full mod and 10k - which sounds wrong)

10:14 AM
so it will have both "627" for example?

cannot parse... rephrase?

So after you'll get into it, will it show hidden flags for 10k users?

well, when I go into it is a bit different to when you go into it... but additionally: the number in the header is actually measuring a slightly different thing. I'll tidy that up...

So it will show only number of flags I'm able to see, right?

I suspect in your case it is primarily count of flags vs count of posts, but will check

10:36 AM
Okay. So, will only count change or will we see more/less flags?

is there any issue w/ the infavorites:mine opearator for search. Don't seem to be getting it for SO?

1:37 PM
Hi!

2:06 PM
@deostroll It was removed, at least for the time being.

2:37 PM
@TimStone so technically we can't even do this via the data.stackexchange.com site?

That's correct, although for the separate reason of the favourites information just not being available there.

You have WAY too much fun with the whiteboard

And role reversals. :-D
@pekka Is my sentence structure ok there?

6:43 PM
@jcolebrand wow.. the answer on that one was incredible.

lol

@Moshe Without knowing what any of the words mean, it looks like the guy is about to get fruit fisted.

6:55 PM
@Moshe it's in den Honig - otherwise it's impeccable
apart from being completely bonkers, of course. :)

Any idea what this guy is up to? Seems a bit odd.

A: The API Sandbox

Glenn BechI want a test site, I want a test site, I want a test site. users with less than 125 reputation can only post answers every 3 minutes; try again later. This is really starting to bother me...

7:26 PM
@Pekka It's im-@Pekka-ble. :-D
Also, der and den is close enough on a whiteboard. :P

The Apple looks really scary somehow!
So cheerful, while drowning a child in honey.

@Pekka Agreed. I was in a hurry. I was late for class and was working on a video for my MSP application.

@Moshe yeah, how's that coming along?
I was thinking you could mention Stack Overflow as a positive experience based on MS technology
But I don't think they would receive that too well :)

Ok, it's a one minute bit. I am considering talking about the following:
My Lego Robotics activities in elementary school.
My Windows 7 Party.
My freelance development experience.
The CS Club here which I'm working on restarting.
If that's not a minute, including my self intro ("I breath technology."), I can technically talk about apps.
Also, I plan to incorporate the whiteboard if I can.

The one with the homicidal apple?
That's courageous, man!
(Just kidding. Sounds good :)

7:33 PM
:-D

You had a Windows 7 party?
What kind?

Well, it was a saturday night, actually on or the day before/after my birthday. (don't remember)
We had bagels, lox (yes, feed the stereotype - it was decent and not terribly expensive) and Windows 7.

Launch party... Microsoft partnered with HouseParty.com, had a contest to throw a launch party. Both Moshe and I won and had Windows 7 parties (mine was cooler,) and got free copies of Win 7 Ultimate.

Nice!

@Fosco Let's gloat FTW! :P hehe

7:35 PM
Windows 7 is cool.

Yep, it was fun.

Except for the search.
Windows 7's search sucks ass.
They had a perfectly fine search in Windows 95, and from there onward went on to explore ways to make it crappier and crappier.

I second that.... but I don't really want my OS to index or search anything.

I think they have an entire department tasked with degrading the usefulness of search.

I almost NEVER search for files, and when I do I'm OK with it doing it the hard way.

7:36 PM
@Fosco well, a basic search would be nice. Indexing, I agree. I don't like my OS indexing stuff either

I'm impressed with how they nerfed scheduled tasks.

@mootinator ohh yeah.
But then, scheduled tasks are really delicate stuff

Question 23: * What was your favorite experience with technology this year?

Upgrade: You can no longer tell if your custom task succeeded.

So it makes sense that you need a CS degree to set them up.

7:38 PM
Answer: Buying my iPh-smartphone. :-D

It will log the exit code it just doesn't care what it is.

@mootinator who needs that? Do some logging in the job that you are running, man.

Any other obvious things I missed?
Hit 10K on SO?

@Pekka It was handy.
Especially integrated with the built in notifications, etc.

Also, should I wait till tomorrow to shoot? I'm using my iPhone and I have until the 14th, but I want to get it in asap.

7:39 PM
@mootinator I totally agree, was being sarcastic... That upgrade is especially nice when you can't make your job log anything
@Moshe About how Windows sucks or about why you should become MS trusted student? :D
Hit 10k on SO sounds nice

@Pekka That's another question. I'm talking about Question 23.

@Moshe right, I see.

I don't think 10K was my favorite experience though.
So many yet so few...
Getting my iPhone in January is a contender.

releasing your first game?

@Fosco That's another good one.

7:44 PM
and you can make it a generic thing in the video... ' releasing my first production quality game to mobile app stores '

Mmmm... I would consider spelling out the store's name. Seeing as the Apple store has a much, much better reputation than the Android one (or so I gather from what little I know about both)

It sounds like a business goal more than a tech goal, but fair enough.
Releasing a production quality port of a framework is also a contender.
I just found my code referenced on SO the other day! (Actually, the author of the Java code pointed me to it.)
So to review, my list:
Purchasing an iPhone, Releasing a game, 10K on SO, Porting a Framework
My favorite moment... Not sure. I'd say the game is the best one, probably. From their perspective.

i would think so.. from mine too.

Heh, @Fosco, thanks for testing.
I really want to give that game another iteration - clean up the codebase and work on translating it.
Soooo busy though.
And here I go applying for student programs. Heh.

8:19 PM
what's the typical ETA from when you cross the 1k votes on a tag threshold to when you actually get the gold badge tag for it?

@Moshe what you outlined above was way too much for one minute. Be eloquent and speak clearly. Record it and listen to yourself. Then realize you talk much too quickly, and talk even slower than that.

8:36 PM
@jcolebrand Heh, okay. EDIT: Oh, that list is for the question.
I'm having a friend shoot the video, so I can "check" myself like that.
I have a different one for the video.

9:25 PM
Man, I sure am failing at Inbox Zero.

@GeorgeMarian do what I do. Get a PM

Eh? A project manager?

Aye

Yeah, I have one of those. She can't catch up on my reading for me though. :)

lol

Not to mention that some of the unread emails are from her. I've been keeping them unread as reminders.

Wow, meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/108184/… was deleted for reasons of moderation. That's... suprising. I'm not saying it was constructive, but shouldn't moderators err on the side of not deleting threads about overzealous moderators?

11:16 PM
@agf People who opt to present their opinions like that with sweeping generalizations either have a revelation and understand why that's not good for anyone, or already have their mind made up over the issue anyway. In either case, letting the post remain doesn't actually benefit them or anyone else, as it typically just ends up in a pile-on.

I see messages, can I post?

There's a number of more constructive ways to bring those same issues up that fare much better.
@jcolebrand Apparently. :P
