Morning all.

@Fosco 'noon

@Fosco 'evening

hah

As you can see, if the world adopted the One True Timezone That Makes Sense, GMT+1, we'd all agree on it being afternoon.
As the wise says, in media stat virtus!

It'd be weird if we were all on the same timezone.

@RebeccaChernoff Ahhh... well, pity that poor user :P

yawns Hmm, somehow I forgot I had a meeting today...good thing I woke up anyway.

@TimStone Woken up by the ringing sound of unread notifications? :P

Surprisingly no, though that's been known to happen :P

It's the sudden silence from the missing wowels

@TimStone "And so, I woke up with drool on my face planted into the keyboard, with this ding-dong sound keep on sounding in my ears"

@TimStone Sounds like a feature request for CodingKitten!

and just like pressing the big button on an alarm clocks only repeats the beeps again a few minutes later, CodingKitten should only stop as you write "jQuery is perfect and does all things"

Good morning everyone, how are we all doing today?

cold and wet

@Josh [I] have reached the limit of 12 Closure votes per day. [I should] come back in 9 hours.

2:55 PM
@PopularDemand Send links, I will review

Cold, tired, and wishing I were home.

Yeah it's a dreary, cold day here also

@Josh Meh, I already closed all those tabs. Leave it for some other 10ker.

sounds good @PopularDemand
So I got a new request from a client today, maybe some of you have some ideas... the client wants me to build a graphical site map of their entire existing site so they know what content is on there and can plan for some updates
Why they don't just review it themselves is beyond me, but, they're a client. They don't know such logic...
;-)
Does anyone know of any programs which can spider a side and build a graphical sitemap showing all pages and what pages link to where?

@Josh Sounds like a good project.

3:01 PM
interested @PopularDemand? :-) I'd rather be writing code

@PopularDemand Bye

@badp See ya! Wow, looks like you had some sort of epic debate early this morning (in my local time, which I know is not your local time).
I may have to scroll to the top of that later.
@Josh By "good project" I meant "writing such a program," not "searching for an existing version of such a program."

Oh
I thought you meant building one by hand
Agreed, writing such a program would be a fun challenge. Probably outside their budget however ;-)

@Josh You want to use GraphViz
@PopularDemand I thought it was you coming back in 9 hours ;P

@badp yeah, if I build it by hand, I probably will.

3:05 PM
@badp Yeah, I played along with that for the first two words and then gave up.

it doesn't build them automatically does it @radp?

@Josh the image is the output of graphviz.org/Gallery/twopi/twopi2.gv.txt

@badp crazyness

3:06 PM
@Josh First it defines the circles, then it connects them. :)

@Fosco looks great, thanks! Have you used it before or did Google reccomend it? ;-)
Uh oh, I seem to have a serious problem: I am clicking "don't click this" links posted by @RebeccaChernoff!!! Someone please stop me!!!!!

Tom GullenMaybe we could have some alternative achievements? http://teamfortress2.fr/achievements.php?eng

There's one for you. See my comment.

Meh. Thanks @Josh for making me notice the pinned message. ):

@PopularDemand voting to close even though I'm only 75% sure it's a dup
@RebeccaChernoff pinned? I see it as starred:

Don't click this link. DO NOT CLICK THIS

3:15 PM
Yeah, that's starred, but there is a (different) pinned message.

@Josh She means that you talking about that made her noticed the Schnapple!

I was also thoroughly disappointed in the lack of evilness in those links @Rebecca. You should work on that...
2
@TylerChacha I ignored that meaningless comment. It blended in with the starred LOLs and Oys

The "who pinned what" feature in the history is completely redundant; I know who pinned the post just based on how useless it is
6

HAHA
True

There's a "who pinned what"?

3:18 PM
@MichaelMrozek I figure I could post 100 messages that are all really useful, or I can post 10,0000 messages that all individually have very little usefulness, and the sheer quantity will mean that I will have provided the same amount of usefulness as the first option.
You can see which option I'm going for here

...or...you could post 0 messages...
(:

Where's the fun in that?
@TylerChacha has about as much hope of posting 0 messages as you or I do @Rebecca (-:

@RebeccaChernoff I meant this

I think if I downvote another one of his questions I might trigger vote fraud detection

3:21 PM
@MichaelMrozek there it is, I knew it was somewhere

@Josh challenge accepted! (:

@YiJiang I think he's cost me about 20 rep so far

@RebeccaChernoff Does that mean you won't post any messages for the rest of the day?
Well, I won't be here most of the day, so enjoy your tavern
bye

@YiJiang Good point, I'm close too.

Just be careful she doesn't start blaming you, that could go south pretty quickly.

So I realize this is old hat and all, but reckon he's serious?
> I'm about to fire someone unless they remove that jQuery UI dependency (for bounties), so consider it gone.

The link he references is a dupe link.

@drachenstern That's the odd thing

@YiJiang I was referencing the following quote, not the preceding OB

3:27 PM
@drachenstern Oh, heh. Well, about that quoted OB...

@YiJiang lol, yes?

a) Surely the team would've noticed it before, given how Jeff laid it out and b) that guy actually had the balls to come here and complain about it. Twice.
Now, if only we could get someone on the team to tell us more about it...

Ok, I'm lost.

looks expectantly @RebeccaChernoff

@GeorgeMarian join the party

3:28 PM
@PopularDemand Ah ha..shame on him for making my rep no longer a multiple of five.

@drachenstern Woohoo, it's a party. Ain't it a bit early in the day? ;)

@drachenstern I was talking about the vote fraud case that appeared today and yesterday

@GeorgeMarian so long as we only serve pity would she be fine ;)

Wrong OB (slap myself)

@YiJiang Actually I don't think there's much else to say

3:29 PM
heh

I'm just kinda scared, if a lot of people started using SO massively from this university, vote fraud would get nuclear here

@drachenstern I'm tempted to mention the consecutive days calendar, but I'm wary of stoking that fire. :P
@badp Perhaps even to the point of needing to sign an arms treaty?

@TimStone lol, I think he likes you a tad more than me, so I'll poke you and say do it

Q: Mysql CREATE statment are really slow (Mac OS X / Macport install)

perrickI recently noticed that recreating the database for the web application I am working on is taking a lot of time. I had just reinstalled Mysql from Macport... ^^^^^^^^ what is this guy missing?
at the rate I'm going I may make the 10k challenge on dba.SE :p

@TimStone Hmm... well it does put a rather large dent in his argument that it's bloated, for bringing the largest component of jQuery UI just for a quote Easter Egg unquote

@YiJiang but being an easter egg it gets additional unwarranted support. CF Excel racing

3:33 PM
@drachenstern Nah...I like the devs. Bringing more smack down upon them from the giant jQuery UI dependency that Jeff has laying around seems mean. :P

Q: Profile page style is broken with too many negative votes

eWolfTested in latest version of Chrome on Mac OS X. It certainly argues for SO's question quality that this hasn't been noticed before :-)

Heh

@drachenstern Oh....my...goodnes...

Just curious, when did unregistered users lose their username display on their profile page?

@TimStone I don't doubt for a second he'll keep from choosing to fire a grep -i 'jqueryui' * in the next few days ya know
@YiJiang ??? ... unregistered users by default have the userxxxxxxxxx so unless they change it ...
7
Q: Why do some users have username "user########"?

drachensternMaybe I'm just missing something obvious, but what's up with this syntax? Is it because people sign up with e-mail addresses and use those for logging in, but don't bother giving themselves custom names (or completing their profile in any way)?

3:35 PM
@drachenstern No, I mean their profile pages no longer display that

see, even I ask noob questions :p
@YiJiang then they would've changed it

@YiJiang Example?

Also, that reminds me, @PopularDemand edits a lot of my stuff on meta :p

He's very good at that.

3:36 PM
@YiJiang OK, now I feel stupid :P

@YiJiang That person is registered

@MichaelMrozek Erm... sorry, I meant users without a display name
@TimStone Yeah, we all feel stupid

I think you've always been able to clear your display name, it just starts as userXXXXXXXX

@YiJiang I think it's something in the drinking water around here then.

@MichaelMrozek I mean, when did they start not showing it on the profile page
I definitely remembered they used to do so

3:37 PM
@YiJiang I think that the user triggered a mechanism to remove that from display
link us a profee?

@YiJiang Yeah

@drachenstern The same one that was the subject of the broken profile with too low vote discussion, though I think you can observe it on any user without a display name

@YiJiang yes but having a user with a "no display name" makes it so much easier to trace out :p

Q: How to add a body class for the current node's taxonomy to a Drupal 7 theme

user569218Does anyone know how or can guide me in the right direction on how to add a body css class for the current node's taxonomy term? i.e. <body class="term-dogs"> where "dogs" is the taxonomy term name. It could also be just the term ID. Either way is fine I just need a solution. This will ...

Same situation, different user.
@YiJiang NOW I see what you're talking about ... that is odd

@GeorgeMarian Ahahaha.

is that a bug?

It might be intended to imply that the user didn't bother to choose a display name.

@drachenstern Could be, I don't see why they'd not want us to see the usernames of these users

You can't make this up, folks...

3:41 PM
the field is labeled nickname in the code, that could be the reason?
@YiJiang I say submit it as a bugreport and see what they say.

@drachenstern Sure

@GeorgeMarian I would have also been amused if there was an easter egg in Kinect Boxing that involved the police storming in, but this was good too.

> Users with no display name has no display name on user profile

Speaking of which, I definitely have a Kinect sitting in a box here..I guess I should actually use it.

3:43 PM
Erm... bad first attempt at a question title

OK now I can reveal it. Regis is coming to work on TWiT.
@YiJiang users who have not registered an account have no display name on user profile
ya'll reckon Regis Philbin is really going to Twit?

@drachenstern But you can register and not have a display name, apparently

@YiJiang you can? that sounds like a bug

Can you? Or have I got that bit wrong?

cheeesusI cannot change my display name on SO. Ever since I signed up, I have the display name user377011. There was a problem updating your profi...

@YiJiang so is this guy

3:47 PM
Not the same issue, but that might imply that the field is empty by default, so I don't know if it follows that the displayed value is too.

Weeeiiirrrdddd...

@TimStone that's the logic I'm going on

Lemme look through the review pages for new unregistered users

@YiJiang when you do your bug report, just link to this whole convo :p
oooh, random thought: reckon Regis is going to do Leo's new morning show?
I know they've been saying that Twit wants to start doing some dailies ... this could be interesting

I have no idea what you're talking about :P

3:51 PM
Did you see my two twitter OBs?
Regis Philbin is retiring from his current show, and coming to work for Leo Laporte on Twit

@Josh It was just from google.

@PopularDemand You have a habit of posting answers as comments. You should get on the free reputation train

I had that habit too. Then I got to lazy to even post comments.

zzzzzzzzzz

I do that three :(
Ok, even more reason to ignore twitter (grrr @leo)
Kidding. But I WILL be teaching Regis how to tweet on the Jan 31 show. (we're pre-taping today - watch for his first tweet @regis_and_kelly)
Damnit, and Regis would've been great to launch a twit morning show :\

@YiJiang Wow, I can't believe I missed that gem...Stop narrowing the solution space with your premise!

@YiJiang close as dupe if you've posted already

@badp I... just posted

Oh snap, ninja'ed.
Oooh, @badp wins.

@MichaelMrozek I do that for dupes, exactly so I won't accidentally board the free rep train.

creepy.

I has moar technique

@badp Yeah, I thought that was funny

@YiJiang Clearly we must have each question be closed as a dupe of the other

4:00 PM

@badp indeed, that would be the honorable thing to do. Sepuku and all that

@badp But of course!

@badp It's in the page title too, oddly

what's also fun is clicking the links in each of my comments :p

I wonder, is the owner's close vote binding? :P

4:02 PM
@YiJiang I smell another question ...

@YiJiang not at all :P

So Tim what do you think are the odds you'll give me more than a three letter word play?

If nothing else I have a four minute advantage and MOAR art!
We could simply merge the questions and copy pasta the creepy avatar on the beautiful show of arrows

Q: Writing iPhone filesystem in background mode

Gert-JanI am writing an app that logs GPS locations to a file on the iPhone and has to continue updating the locations in background mode. Now I am wondering what is the best way of doing this. Is it good practice to open the file and keep it open when my app goes in to background mode or should I close ...

@badp that would be disingenuous tho :p

@drachenstern You're lucky there isn't a daily onebox limit

4:06 PM
@MichaelMrozek I aim to please ;)
Who needs original content? This is the internet!
however, real work ...

@drachenstern Eh :P

Oy, delicious.com are you going down the tubes?

@GeorgeMarian old news
but the service was meant to be kept?

@badp Yeah, I noticed a while ago. I just didn't want to believe it.

You say it's an intervention because I re-design my website too often, but all I see is a room full of folks who need websites re-designed.
^^^^^^^^ follow if you're on twitter :D

@drachenstern It's okay, I don't need websites redesigned; I don't have one to begin with

same here

4:25 PM
I have one to design, and I wish I were a style-guru like Yi Jiang...
I spent several hours last night messing around with various layouts and flows.. can't make up my mind.

@Fosco just strap some mothereffingtextshadow.com
who needs a layout when you have mothereffingtextshadow

@Fosco I'm not! You're really flattering me there

I've been doing web design since at least 1996, but I still haven't become comfortable with CSS layouts.
I wish there wasn't so much hate for tables ><
@MichaelMrozek My software would be entering the special olympics were that the case!

Q: Error in Stack Exchange tag-subscription email

meagarI subscribed to the Ruby on Rails tag, and in the email I received one of the questions has caused some kind of strange display error:

@Fosco I wish they'd give us what we want, which is real 2D layout.

4:32 PM
@GeorgeMarian with a couple hundred CSS hacks you can get anything!

Don't get me started...

I think it should be easier to describe certain things...

like trying to get three divs, one next to the other, having the same height

The thing I hate most about web design is that it's a hack-fest and not in any good way.

I read an article to get this which involved nasty padding offsetting and nesting
it was such a dirty hack, tables would give a much cleaner markup

4:34 PM
Should I feel bad about wanting to use Tables??

@Fosco YES, BECAUSE YOU COULD BE USING jQUERY INSTEAD

The basic problem is that the model is odd and not what we really need for what we want to do with websites.

:D

Q: Space between two rows in a table?

MarinIs this possible via CSS? I'm trying tr.classname {border-spacing:5em} to no avail. Maybe I'm doing something wrong ?

sick ... sick sick sick

I used a layout plugin for jquery that was awesome, but I can't find it anymore.

4:35 PM
user has 234 rep, barely active, and two gold badges for that :|

the jquery website plugin area is the fucking worst implementation of search/display I've ever seen.

@Fosco JavaScript layout is evil.

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, probably the worst. it just worked well for this one job I did...
with panes on all sides that could be opened, closed, resized, toggled, yada yada

Yah, it's worse than using tables for layout in my book.

Fuck it then... I'm going to use tables.

4:38 PM
heh

Thanks George.... It'll be commented in there that if anyone has a problem with it, to come see you. :P

lol
Send 'em my way. I'll give 'em a piece of my mind. They won't doubt you ever again. ;)
So, this is odd. My gmail priority inbox is rather borked. For some reason, I have one email that just refuses to show up in that view. But, it shows up under its label and in the regular inbox.

Oooo... the analytics I've embedded into StackExchangeScript's homepage is now live and working

Shiny, in a geeky sorta way.

Unfortunately it seems that bounce rate for users coming in from the OSS ad is 100%
though it's only three right now

4:47 PM
@YiJiang Bounce rate?

@GeorgeMarian People who immediately leave the page when they see it

Ah, yes that makes sense.

To be fair, the sample size is not even remotely statistically significant
There's one IE visitor already, urgh...

you added analytics?

The project has zero IE support, and I've not even bothered to check if the new homepage works on IE
@RebeccaChernoff Well, yes. I thought it might be useful

4:51 PM
You can run userscripts in IE. I just haven't tested them.
but theoretically...

@RebeccaChernoff Some scripts like the favicon thing will not run at all

Won't bounce rate always be 100% if the analytics are just on one page? (and we can't put it on the repo pages themselves...)

@RebeccaChernoff I've added a README page too
Hmmm... does clicking on the install links count? GM and Chrome both cancels the default browser action, right?
