@Pop - You realize you just bumped all those stackoverflow source questions in order to satisfy your ocd? ;)

@PeterAjtai It's quite common.

Did you do a search for "stackoverflow" as one word?

No, I would never go to sleep.
I never search out things to edit, I only edit things that I come upon during the course of my regular business that are in need.
Usually it's either stuff I come across in the morning when I'm looking at what was posted overnight, or stuff that's linked to in a post I'm participating in.

ah... It is a little confusing, since in the Stack Overflow logo it looks like one word.... it's only on the About page that you can see it's supposed to be 2. I've been writing it all in one word because of the logo.... until I looked at the about page after one of my posts got edited.

Is there a way to see what a website looks like without directing your browser there yourself? I was going to ask on web apps, but their Meta is kinda wishy-washy about whether [webapp-rec] questions are kosher.
@PeterAjtai There was no official style until very recently.

12:05 AM
curl
@Popular If you use php, linux, etc... you could use curl.... or an iframe (like in jsfiddle) but in that case your broser is still going there.
s/broser/browser

Yeah, I want to check out a clone report I came across, but at least one previous clone has been reported as having... questionable scripts, so I don't actually want to go there directlky.
Hm, everyone's gone. Oh well. squarepolygon.com for the more adventurous among you.

Just curl on get_file_contents it into a file or a textarea or something like that (in PHP).... looks like codepad disable curl, but if you can find an online one even easier.

And

A: Is it legal to copy Stack Overflow questions and answers?

Jeff AtwoodThere are a number of "illegal" clones popping up which use the cc-wiki data without following the attribution terms (these are linked at the bottom of every webpage, and included as a .txt file in every data dump we produce). Here's a place to list all the illegal clones, since we didn't have o...

curl or get_file_contents

@Peter Too much effort for the moment, perhaps later.
See you.

12:24 AM
@Popular - 3 lines of code - Here is the source code for squarepolygon.com - pastie.org/1138756
@Popular - For when you get back ------ Oh... but usually, I just visit those type of pages with Firefox and NoScript on (Javascript disabled).

If detected early, colon cancer is 90% curable
Am I the only one drinking in here? This is the tavern right?
Maybe this room shouldn't be logged...

1:17 AM
@Popular, I am now...

You're popular? Cool.

2:06 AM
/me is drinking milk... And, on the first day of a three-day weekend, working harder than I have all week

3 hours later…
4:48 AM
I don't think milk counts. (;

As what?

Just being silly.
What'd you need earlier?

I was wondering whether [webapp-rec] s were kosher, and realized you were a mod there. I read meta but didn't feel like there was a consensus.
But you saw the question anyhow.
Trying browsershots.org now, we'll see if it works.
Hm, if that site was a SO clone in the past, it isn't anymore.
(The one I was investigating, not browsershots.org itself)

which?

5:34 AM
@rchern squarepolygon.com

Q: Is Stack Overflow's code downloadable or free to use?

Is the script running Stack Overflow downloadable? Are there similar scripts available? I would like to know how Stack Overflow was structured; its function and design are pretty straightforward. I would like to know about approaches to achieving the site's functions. PS: Is www.squarepolygon.c...

3 hours later…
9:14 AM
lol, "script"
btw @PopularDemand shouldn't the answers to that question be deleted?
They're completely wrong now.
Well -- okay. The answers to that post also are outdated.
Alright. Time to install Ubuntu 10.10

10:21 AM
Here goes...
There's something fundamentally right with being able to use a system while it is being upgraded to the next version of its operating system.

+1

10:39 AM

@badp There is something fundamentally wrong if said operating system breaks every rule of the previous version once upgraded.

Yeah, UI consistency isn't one of Canonical's strengths
At least, however, they can stick to their own UI guidelines with their apps :P

The new Netbook remix is a disaster in my humble opinion. Also, WTH are they doing trying to copy MacOSX?

Ah, I haven't used the netbook remix.
My opinion is that Ubuntu is mainly a Gnome distro. If you want a good distro that isn't Gnome, you better use something else.

It used to be brilliant. The beta of the new one leaves a lot to be desired for. And on a 10" screens uses way to much spaces, and no customization options.
Ie. I can't even change the damn background or even press Alt-F2.

10:44 AM
o.O
That's weird indeed, possibly a bug?
When this update is over, I'll use Testdrive to see what the latest netbook remix is like

Apparantly it is a known bug

Q: No Alt+F2 in Ubuntu Netbook 10.10?

DiagoI am stumped. I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 Beta 3 and for some reason I can't get Alt-F2 to do anything. Is this a known bug or am I just not doing the right thing?

And to add to the frustration
> Just to explain: the run dialog called by Alt+F2 is a function of Gnome Panel, that is not running in Unity (it uses its own panel), so we'll have to wait for them to implement such functionality.

Just bind Win-Space to open the terminal.

I would love to. Except I can't find any tools to do binding. Not on a default install. Which is why I am frustrated. I know you can install it yourself, but why not do it by default?

Erm, I guess "System → Preferences → Keyboard shortcuts" would be unhelpful?

Close. Application... System.... No Keyboard Shortcuts. No Desktop Options. Not even a Screen Saver option :(

10:53 AM
=/

I am generally very understanding, especially since it's a beta.... But... Do NOT make it public when you have removed basic functionality. Then I may as well use Windows 7 Starter.
And I am pretty close to reloading Windows 7 on this netbook. At least it works.

Why not go back to 10.04?

It's an option. Just not sure if that means a complete reinstall again :(

11:15 AM
Wow, 10.10 gets also rid of policykit
Restarting! cross fingers
Gee, it booted.

Bleh. Re-install. Not now. Will wait for my new machine to arrive in about 2 weeks and then retire the netbook
I have to ask. How is this user posting this question?

Q: How do I connect to the internet (newly reformatted laptop)?

DianAfter my laptop was reformatted(Win7) it could no longer connect to wireless. Do I need to setup anything? When I use the ipconfig command in cmd this shows: Ethernet adapter local area connection: Media State: ....Media disconnected Tunnel adapter isatap Media State: ....Media di...

11:38 AM
Friend.

Agreed. Just at which point can said user and said friend not put 1 and 1 together?

12:03 PM
wait a second... "Start Orb"?
what the... who calls it like that?

12:18 PM
At times I love apt
Somehow I'm deleting four packages marked for automatic installation without breaking anything
oh, Aptitude only noticed namebench would get broken by those changes after committing them to disk.

12:55 PM

4 hours later…
5:03 PM
a quite annoying bug in Ubuntu 10.10 has mouse left clicks stop working after a hour or so
right clicks work fine, middle clicks work fine
but both the mouse and the trackpad can't left click
until I plug in and out the keyboard o.O

well, you're a beta tester now -- off to launchpad!

Indeed, just reporting for others who may want to try it.
(In the meantime I was asking on #ubuntu+1 what package to file the bug against.)

I can't try it -- I'm a Fedora guy.

I'm only mentioning because this bug is kind of a show stopper -- suddenly, you can't click on anything, including the "Shut down" button on the panel...

I can imagine
terminal window FTW!

5:12 PM
Yeah, except alt-f2 also stops working :)

lol

ctrl-alt-f1 still works, sure.

@balpha Any interesting features coming up for Chat?

bbcode!! and marquee. and blink. and colours. and threads. and message comments. and chat reputation. and more creative mass-highlight solutions, since sitting on the @ key no longer works. Oh, and it'll all be ported to Silverlight 4.

sounds about right
also, unicorns.

Q: Homepage buttons are boring...

thyrgleOk, look at these buttons: As you can see they are very boring. They don't have any rounded corners. It's also very inconsistent; the badges are perfectly round but the home page buttons fail to do so. It's Stack Exchange 2.0 guys... you guys need rounded corners on your buttons to make it loo...

5:16 PM
Yeah, one-box support for unicornify is a must.

-1 not enough bevel

you can downvote right here:

and what's that? Franklin Gothic?
It should be Matrix vs Miltown!

oh, btw:
> sitting on the @ key no longer works.
...still waiting for that upvote and tick from you

5:21 PM
@@@@ Good point, forgot about that.
+25
Sorry.

funnily enough, that "@@@@" was highlighted for me
stupid chrome JS caching
F5 fixed it, though

5:37 PM
Significant Number Game: Someone tell me significance of the following number: 22656

OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!1one!!eleventy

wrong

jon skeet's user id

22656 < 9000?

(and to my shame, I didn't even have to look that up)

5:39 PM
@balpha How did you guess?
You just happen to know it?

@balpha It's okay, you do (did?) after all have some unit tests relying on some of Skeet's answers.

@Chacha102 I recognized the number, I wouldn't have been able to tell it by heart, though

Is there a unit test in SO that fails if Jon doesn't have the highest reputation?

One failed because somebody downvoted an answer of Skeet's, if memory serves me right

"lol, one of my test cases is failing because somebody down voted a particular Jon Skeet answer." (this is not a joke)

        [TestMethod]
        public void JonSkeet()
        {
            var u = ApiProxy.GetUserFor(22656);

            Assert.AreEqual("Jon Skeet", u.Name, "Name");
            Assert.IsTrue(u.Age >= 33, "Age");
            Assert.IsTrue(u.QuestionCount >= 20, "QuestionCount");
            Assert.IsTrue(u.AnswerCount >= 7690, "AnswerCount");
            Assert.IsTrue(u.Reputation >= 164000, "Reputation");
            Assert.IsTrue(u.UpVotes >= 5500, "UpVotes");
            Assert.IsTrue(u.DownVotes >= 240, "DownVotes");

^^^ that's probably not the failing test case

5:46 PM
Yeah, latest edit was Jun 8th.

that is funny though..
So if Jon changed his name to John Skeet, your code would come tumbling down?

@Chacha102 That test would fail, yes.

I'm just noticing that none of the tests in my (no longer maintained) python warpper for the API is using Jon Skeet
oh, no, there he is
    jons = Users.all().order_by("-reputation").fetch()[0].answers().order_by("+activity").fetch()
    assert jons == sorted(jons, key = lambda a: a.last_edit_date or a.creation_date)
although that wouldn't fail if it wasn't Jon

That just gets the first user..
which you've named Jons

@Chacha102 That's a unit test for the order_by() method
If the answers aren't returned in activity order, the test fails.

5:54 PM
exactly

@balpha you sure that's safe? seems like integer overflow when checking rep is a real danger :)

there's no such thing in python :)

>>> 1e30000
inf

>> int("1" + 30000 * "0")
(I'm not going to paste the output, but it ends in 00000L)

issues int("1" + 3000000 * "0") and hears the fans spinning

5:58 PM
that's got to be hell on the cpu registers

Hi

howdy
welcome to the chat

anyone here having some experience in CQRS & DDD ?

I don't even know what that means
I'm guessing "domain driven design" for the second

;) .. Command Query Separation with Domain Driven Design

6:03 PM
'R'?

that would be a "no" from me
@badp QueRy

Command and Query Responsibility Segregation
that's what CQRS stands for.. Command Query Separation is the principle behind it

oh.
Sounds like a fancy name for "avoid sql injections"

basically it's just splitting your model in two parts
one for reading.. one for writing
and you do all your writing through Commands.. so they can be queued etc..
goes a bit into SOA .. but I'm still trying to grasp all that stuff
btw.. nice chat system.. did Jeff and his gang write this themselves or did they buy it somewhere?

It's mainly balpha's (afaik)

6:06 PM
yeah, the gang is Marc & me

And @marc as his backup

cool stuff

Sorry, Marc.

What's this running on? ASP.NET MVC + a ton of jquery?

precisely

6:07 PM
There's never enough jQuery.

Although I think @marc prefers to stay out of the limelight and let @balpha take all the blame... I mean fame :)

awesome stuff.. did you open source the chat engine or something?

Since when was programming 'on-topic' for the tavern?

Since when does the tavern have a topic?

@Tigraine That would be a no...
@badp True..

6:08 PM
sorry :) but all the other chatrooms where deserted so I joined the first one ;)

@Chacha102 talking about that -- what's up with the name change?
any decision?

I haven't looked through everything yet.

If there's one topic that doesn't belong on the Tavern is talking about the tavern!!

@Chacha102 You actually visit your own Tavern?

Are they all starred?

6:09 PM

The Meta Tavern (General)

For meta discussion about the meta channel on meta stack overf

@Chacha102 They should be

ok.. I'll leave you to it.. I guess I'll have to stalk some IRC to find someone who can clarify CQRS for me ;)
bye!

Later

see ya

Quick, @Chacha102 -- post a poll question on MSO!

I'm thinking about it
I'm guessing you guys have an automatic script that made messages?

6:17 PM
we had some lorem ipsum in the beginning
and the other day I wrote a python script posting random stuff into the room
but usually, we just talk to ourselves

@Chacha102 With you duplicating The Rusted Port, are you indicating a preference? :)

@Diago The first list was all that I could find

@badp This isn't yet complete...

@Diago The second was the ones I liked

@Chacha102 OK, I caught up. You liked the Unhandled Exception? Awesome :P

6:20 PM
I'll post a poll later..
Unless balpha wants to let me use the Beta SO Poll Feature

couldn't if I wanted to :)

:(

I love it when I close a question, suggest an alternative site, and then get told that gadgets will not cover a DVD player because it's not in their FAQ as a gadget. Yet the question is posted on SU.

I thought the /polls/ "route" was kind of a one-timer for Ubuntu and Unix :)
(what's the term in dot-net-speak?)

route...

6:22 PM
Endpoint? That sounds fancy anyway

HAPPY FUN BALL!!!!

System.Tools.OneTimeTools.SingleUseRoutes.StackOverflowPollRoute

@balpha Please Tell me your joking?

@Diago "your joking"

I don't think he will

6:23 PM
@Diago don't worry, I am :)

@balpha I was about to go into shock. I have been going through the System. classes at work and thought I had missed something important. :)

well, badp was asking about dot-net-speek
and .NET takes the last of the Python zen rules to the extreme
> Namespaces are one honking great idea -- let's do more of those!

It could be worse. It could be Java.

As an MCT it's one of my nightmares. Any discussion around namespaces turn into a disaster.
Even worse if the audience is from Delphi or VB backgrounds

org.stackexchange2.userspace.interface.http.poll.handlers.remote.JQueryPollHandler
I'm a n00b, hence why I can't enlarge the above :(

6:29 PM
Needz moar jQuery. $.poll(), that's it.

Now, that's more respectable.

7:09 PM
Does a Bounty ignore CW?
I want to make a poll
meh
nvm

I would guess yes, but I don't know. Do you get 15 for an accepted CW answer?

no

Oh. Maybe not then
Go offer a 2000 rep bounty to find out

Q: Naming the Tavern

Chacha102I think Popular Demand put it best: It's a well-known fact that all the best taverns follow a specific naming convention. "The Brass Lantern," "The Prancing Pony," "The Drunken Clam," "The Mended Drum,"... they're all "The [Descriptor] [Noun]." Unfortunately, the tavern we're in isn't so bles...

@Chacha102 You could put a link to the question in the room description

7:15 PM
Done

@Chacha102 Yes, a bounty will work on a CW. Its immune to the rep removal

Stupid Fun Haters. Someone downvoted my question

Does it matter who came up with the name? is that why you're talking about a bounty? you posted 2 of mine :)

I mean .. its Friday somewhere...
I decided against the Bounty

@Chacha102 I countered the downvote.

7:20 PM
"The Jonned Skeet"

Somebody should go through the logs and find all of them; there were some really good ones
By "somebody" I mean not me

I voluenteer.... Michael to do it.

7:38 PM
I went through the starred ones and added mine.. I remember one of JoePhillips' entries: The Dusty Keyboard

> Piers Myers: @PopularDemand shouldn't there be an age restriction for this place?
> balpha: well, the owner of this tavern will graduate from high school in 2011

Recaptcha has been ridiculous lately; every other one I get it indecipherable
Here are two I just got back to back:

1 hour later…
8:58 PM
There's no way to search comments, right?
Besides SEDE, I suppose

Captchas shouldn't be as strict for vetted users.

Yay I can talk now woohoo

@User142287 They're greatly reduced at 10k; there's been requests to lower them at 5k, but nothing's come of it

it makes sense to do things as a gradient rather than a cutoff.

@User142287 +1

9:04 PM
f(x)=x^2 or something.

Maybe, but that's contrary to how all the other reputation limits work

Still include your bayesian probability and post speed, but limit it based on that.

@Chacha102 The green dragon

This isn't a feature, it's a fraudulent post detection system.

Not having to hit it as often is a feature; it's a measure of trust that you're not going to write a bot that uses your credentials to bypass the captcha check and spam the site
@Tyler Post it as an answer on that question

9:07 PM
Similarly, we shouldn't just be inspecting the rate of edits, but also weighing their changes.

@MichaelMrozek just did, noticed the link heh
is there nick complete feature in here?

I'm playing around with the idea of something hex-based, like deadbeef cafe, but mess around with bitwise to somehow result something cool

@Tyler Type @(beginning of their name) and you'll see suggestions pop up; hit tab to auto-complete

no ideas yet however

@MichaelMrozek it just tabs to other fields in page
@MichaelMrozek thnx

@MichaelMrozek dear lord

... Chacha officialized my contest on Meta? Agh.
@JoePhillips Agreed.

9:52 PM
The Palmed Face
horrible

@MichaelMrozek that looks like a lot of edits

What's the etiquette on a question that was asked and then you realized the answer was really stupid and you shouldn't have bothered asking the question? Delete?

10:24 PM
i think other people will delete it for you if its too dumb

fair enough
