> Immediately noticeable is the cringe-inducing vertically aligned window controls. Admittedly, it does save a few pixels of vertical space, since Apple got rid of the title bar entirely. But the Human Interface Guidelines are there for a reason—to provide users with a consistent paradigm for interacting with applications. The common wisdom is that you shouldn't break the HIG unless there is a compelling reason. In our opinion, a few pixels of vertical space isn't a compelling enough reason.
Sounds like it's Cupertino who got their photocopiers ready this time.
Especially when you read the enthusiastic comments about the all new column headings!
IIRC, Windows Media Player 7 had those?

3:57 PM
And how is everyone today?

pretty okay, thank you

not bad thanks :)

(peeks over his bottle) Smashing :P

@Diago Glad to hear it! :-)
Google has a sweet homepage today!
(In case anyone wasn't aware of the address ;-)

Thanks. I only found out today the toxic combination Red Bull, Vodka and Tequila can be.

4:04 PM
@Diago Rud Bull Vodka give you wiiings! But you can't steeeerrrr!!! crash!

@Josh It's the only thing I drink, and I drink it like cool drink. When I saw the bill last night I was shocked for the first time in ages.
Since I had to pay :|

@Diago Ouch :-(

Q: How can I network my WinXP laptop with my Western Digital MyBook without a router

d03boyI have a laptop with an ethernet port. I have a Western Digital MyBook with an ethernet port (it contains its own little internal computer). I need to hook up my laptop directly to the MyBook and be able to access it via windows networking. How can I tell my laptop to connect to the MyBook? I'm ...

Static IP and a crossover cable is the way to go @Joe
I'll post details on that question

static IP on which device?
remember that I can't actually do anything on the MyBook without first networking it
its a possibility that I still have a static IP set on it but I don't remember what it is

4:12 PM
@JoePhillips I'm reading the manual now... if you can't assign it a static IP, you can run a DHCP server from your laptop

ok
know of a really quick way to figure out its IP?

@JoePhillips Um, you could possibly do that with ping or arp... I'm a linux guy, not a windows guy, so I'm not familiar with the commands you'd use on WinXP

@JoePhillips ipconfig?

Posting a duplicate here: Anyone running IE8, I'd appreciate if you ran this quick test:

An IE8 Test

If you have IE8, please run a quick test

@balpha Sure, I can do that in a sec
@JoePhillips: From the manual:
Recovery Button
Pressing the recovery button while powering up the device resets the admin user
name and password to default without erasing shared folders or volumes. The
recovery button also resets network configuration to DHCP (obtain an IP address
automatically).
You could then run a DHCP server on your laptop and use a crossover cable or connect via a switch and then the WD Drive will get an IP

Security by Giving Up

@Joe here's the result of a quick Google search (I have not tested these)

@Josh I'd rather not reset it

@JoePhillips Gotcha

how can I run a dhcp server on windows?

@JoePhillips Do you think it was assigned a static IP before?

4:19 PM
@badp Give me 10 minutes to start up my VM

Q: Free DHCP server for Windows XP?

GiliAre there any (good) free DHCP servers for Windows XP?

@balpha Connecting to IE8 Vm now

@Josh It very well could have been. It's been a while since I configured it

@JoePhillips If so, would it have been a private IP (10.*.*.*, 192.168.*.*, 172.16.*.*)?

192.168.x.x

@JoePhillips What you can do is assign your laptop a static IP of 192.168.0.1 or something with a netmask of 255.255.0.0, and ping (broadcast) 192.168.255.255
after connecting the WD drive to the laptop via a crossover cable or switch
if the WD drive has a static 192.168.x.x address, it will reply to broadcast pings

4:27 PM
i set the static 192.168.2.2. Is the mask still 192.168.255.255?

@JoePhillips 255.255.0.0 I believe
@JoePhillips 192.168.255.255 is the broadcast address
@balpha sorry for delay, Vm starting up

no hurry :)

hmm.. not coming up with anything on the broadcast thing
unless im doing it wrong
ah, I have nmap installed
I guess I can try to remember the syntax for a range scan

@JoePhillips Hmmm. Are you sure it was configured with a static IP?

no im not sure. I'm rebooting it right now to see if it picks up dhcp address

4:34 PM
@JoePhillips Cool

aha!

@JoePhillips Got it?

"No matching DHCP Range for DHCP discover for 00:00:aa:aLKAJSDF <WHATEVER> from interface 192.168.2.2
its not receiving an address because it doesnt match the range or something
so it is alive...

Hm, "No matching DHCP Range for DHCP discover"...
> Your DHCP range and your servers are in different subnet
What DHCP range did you supply?

didnt actually configure it... I guess i'll try that

4:43 PM
@balpha IE8 slowly loading

slow is good
I've mostly got results from fast computers :)

@balpha My VM was suspended, it's slow to wake up... must be sleepy
It's running off a dual core 3.2 GHz Linux VMWare Server running like 6 other VMs
(This VM has Windows 7)

that doesn't sound too slow, unless you're rendering big buck bunny on the rest of the VMs

I am getting my i7 in 3 weeks :)
Just totally putting it out there.

@Josh Just an FYI, any NICs made recently don't need a crossover cable anymore. They have autosensing NICs now that will "crossover" for you

4:48 PM
@Joe As long as they are Gigabit. Ran into that problem yesterday actually.

@Josh DHCP worked! 192.168.2.1 is what it was assigned :)

@JoePhillips OK, cool, I wasn't sure how new your NIC was
@JoePhillips Yey!
@balpha LOL, not, it's just waking from suspend is slow at first

@Diago How many cores?

@balpha many issues logging in...
Bar at to "There was an error contacting the server"
reloading...

@JoePhillips They don't specify. apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html

4:54 PM
@Diago It's under the customization

@Diago Ah... have you had laptops before? They are handy. I miss having a desktop though :( :(

@JoePhillips I am working on a 2008 MacBook as we speak. I will never turn back :)
I still get 6 hours battery life.

the thing I would like is dual moniors
monitors
kind of difficult to accomplish with a lappy
and my machine is from 2006 so its starting to get a little older

@JoePhillips Agreed. But the resolution on the Pro is the same as my 21 inch. So it will work out for me

@JoePhillips 2 cores
brb fixing broken printer, argh

4:57 PM
@Josh Where did you find that?

@Josh I figured they would've gone more so they could turn some off or something like that

The Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors are based on new 32-nanometer process technology with an advanced Core microarchitecture that features an integrated memory controller and Level 3 cache, giving the MacBook Pro faster, more direct access to memory. In addition, these processors feature:

HyperThreading - a technology that allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core. So a dual-core MacBook Pro has f
@JoePhillips I bought a Dell with an Intel core i5, and was duped by the "4-core power!" slogan
it's a dual core w/ hyperthreading
and I bought it for this VMware server, intending to use 4 cores for 4 simultaneous VMs running :-(
very bad reflection on me as my company's lead IT guy! :'(

oh man that sucks
how can they say a core and hyperthreading is the same thing? That's total shenanigans

@Josh Considering I currently have a Dual Core 2.0, that upgrade will be worth it. Also I still have the Intel GPU in mine so I can't wait to play.

@Diago I am still very jealous :-)

5:10 PM
I am quite excited. It's been 3 years since I have done a proper upgrade.

Damn, my Canon Pixma iP4300 seems to be shot :-(
WHy is it inkjet printers I get seem to fail every 2 years?

Thankfully we don't allow inkjets in our company anymore. It's laser or bust.
Damn the US celebrations. Now I can't have my series fix for the week

5:29 PM
@Diago Looks like when I do my errands I'll be shopping for a printer also :-(
I'll look at laser. I would far prefer them
Expensive though... then again, buying a new Inkjet every 2 years isn't exactly what I'd call "cheap"
(brb)

5:53 PM
OK, well since the past few days I've been basically chained to my workstation and today's my day off, I'm going to go and explore that big wide-open space that is known as... "The Outdoors"!
I'll probably wander back in here for a drink and some XMPP testing later. Have a great day everyone!

@Josh Have fun. I have returned from my outdoors trip already. And it was to finalize my MacBook :)

Thanks @Diago!
Since I'll probably be shopping for a printer, before I shove off does anyone have any good printer recommendations? It's for a small 4 person office which prints very rarely (maybe 10-20 pages per week)
(I'll also be shopping for a UPS, but that one I'm pretty sure I know what I'm getting)

6:26 PM
someone just said "The Dangling Pearl" on twitter... are you here meatpants?

Does anyone know where the source is for "chat will eventually be available for all sites, not just one fragmented Meta chat"?
Blog? Meta post?

@balpha Grazie.

Any word on what the first main site will be that get a chat system?
I'm assuming Stack Overflow, but as far as can I see, nobody has verified it

definitely not SO
way too large
we'll be starting with a smaller one

@balpha If your thinking SU, please not :(

Well, then you're stuck with us here for a while longer :)

"<- your sentence wasn't parallel!"

let's put it this way:
if you look at this page's source, you'll see that the site-specific color scheme is in http://sstatic.net/chat/css/chat.meta.stackoverflow.com.css
I'll leave the rest to you

SF, for the lazy.

@PopularDemand I was thinking that for a minute :)

@Diago Well... you should continue thinking that for longer than a minute, because it's true.

@PopularDemand Please go slow on me tonight
2 hours ago, by Diago
Thanks. I only found out today the toxic combination Red Bull, Vodka and Tequila can be.

@Diago No, Diago! You have so much to live for!
You can give up your moderatorship, if you need to!
@Shog9 will pick up the slack for you!

Can anyone recommend to me a nice 6+ port, gigabit switch for a reasonable price?

6:50 PM
@PopularDemand Well I have 5 more of those to go, if I don't make it @Shog9 will be promoted by proxy. I'll update my will in the next 10 minutes :P

@Diago Bonne chance.
Oh no. Facebook is launching a "Questions" service.

@PopularDemand Better not show @Jeff.

@Diago Why not? I'm sure a chuckle/self-esteem boost wouldn't hurt him.

True. It couldn't do that much harm. Let's see what Meta has to say.

7:20 PM
@PopularDemand «Facebook Questions will be available to everyone in the US »
That's a poor start
anyway, it sounds just like a "socialer" yahoo answers which will get its own column in Failbook.

> What's the best todo list manager for the iPhone?
> Does anyone know of a good vegan cheese substitute?
> What is the best chocolate in the world?
> Is it better to read the book first and then watch the movie, or watch the movie first and then read the book?
like yahoo anwers, only without the txt speech

Yeah, a lot of subjectivity there
and it's a closed beta right now, if I get it right, so it's bound to be higher quality

> To help the best answers rise to the top, "vote up" really good answers and "vote down" answers that aren't very useful.
now where have I heard that before?
> In order to maintain a high quality of answers for questions asked, your ability to comment on other people's answers depends on how close you are to the question asker or answerer, the rating of your previous answers, and whether you originally posed the question.
now that's actually an interesting idea of integrating the whole social graph crap into the system

7:41 PM
> "the rating of your previous answers,"
Smells of reputation, does it not? :)
Although, if your friends are jerks you're still screwed.
Meh -- imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, they say.

A: Why use Oracle Application Express for web app?

USA lets get back to work.It seems alot of you people like Oracle bashing, but have you really used Oracle. Most likely not. I have for over 8 years, and oracle forms can be a pain, the application express makes it easier, and you have to understand how to create PL/SQL functions to do updating, and triggers to call the...

WTF is that question
wall of text over wall of text with BOLD LARGE NUMBERED POINTS
> Anyone can do VB, C#, but can you do Oracle or create XML databases? No, probably not.
wait a second -- XML databases?
@balpha I'm making it more readable so people can truly understand the atrocities he said and downvote him to -200
I'm roughly mid way.
You dot-net-freemium-garbage using newbie.
I bet you take the train to go to work.

10:09 PM
Complete!
What do I win?

@badp balpha's everlasting love.
Is there a question in there?

That's actually an answer

... sorry, is there an objective programming question in there?

The question was "Why use Oracle Application Express for web app [development]?"

I can't help but notice that the author's name is "USA lets get back to work." Perhaps this is a protest against Labor Day.

10:15 PM
The 'answer' was "OMFG. Oracle fucking rocks, like, you have to actually know something to use it. It used to be cheap but now it's web 2.0, yo. Not like that freemium garbage that is dot net, and all its for pay plugins. Everything Oracle is free, until it isn't and then you have to pay. But not everybody can use it! Not like dot net. Everybody does dot. Especially those pesky cardboard-box-residents software-pirating filthy Indian scum. They took all our jobs! You foolish corporations!"
A removed "post" in honour of Shog9

@badp Huh?

awesome answer. I want to sign up for his seminar.

dammit, stop deleting posts. I flip back here & immediately think Diago showed up

Q: Where can I talk about celebrities?

user150857There is no room for celebrity gossip on Stack Overflow. Where it is allowed? Here?

(See my comment. Although since he said "room," maybe he was asking about chat?)

> There is no innovation due to outsourcing. BRING the jobs back home, and people will create stuff that no other company has, and won't have due to copy rights, and you will have a advantage over your customer again.

@#$£! yeah.
Those pesky train-commuting customers.

heh...is that a bug in the alert notifications? it alerted me.

me too

I wish I had a home job with no copy rights and a advantage over my customer

They think they know XML databases!
@rchern whoops, sorry about that

Hmm. Yes

that did >_>

10:49 PM
weird.
well, there's your "notify everyone" hidden feature...

What's more, I think the @-reply feature comes straight from the site
so would a comment addressing @# would @-reply everybody eligible?

@##

has to be 3 characters (not counting the @ I think)

yup

@#ab Test?
(is it just a # at the beginning that causes it?)

10:51 PM
no
because $$$ alerted all

Oh, so it did. I have no idea what the pattern is then

If you get something that doesn't start with @ to work I'm going to be very confused

Q: It is currently possible to highlight all users in a room

badpMy attempt to self-censor myself ended up highlighting the whole room. Apparently, most combinations of three or more non-letters after the @simbol will work, including the original @#$£ or less imaginative @###, @$$$, @£££. @@@@ also works.

I shall check.
Hmm, no, but I always seem to get the notification after I've already seen the comment/answer, heh.

@MichaelMrozek Check if you got @-replied yourself.

@rchern Ok, thanks
@badp Doesn't look like it

@badp, we posted it in the Chat Feedback room too

@MichaelMrozek Phew.
It would be fun to get into, say, Favourite Programmers' Cartoon and use @-spam for mass spamming.

11:10 PM
I suspect the code is stripping symbols prior to matching but after length-checking, so whatever symbols happen to be in that list...

@Shog9 Ah, that's clever. I wonder why @!!! doesn't work though
Is ! allowed in display names? (And do you include it in a reply if it is?)

It'd be nice to think they're using the exact list of characters excluded from names on SO, but... That might be a bit optimistic. DRY often suffers in OO languages.

I don't even know what the list is on SO, I've never tried putting anything fancy in my display name

Dear balpha, about your @#$% -ing chatroom....

@rchern Fair enough, but I do find it curious that my @#$% didn't light up even though the "feature" is still working at Chat feedback.

11:42 PM
Your @#$% looks lit up to me (blue).

@PeterAjtai Oh. Does the one you just wrote look blue to you?

yeah, it won't light up for you in your own messages
if you want to know if it worked, just hover over it & see if it highlights the message above

@Popular Nope. Not the one I just wrote. But it does highlight your message when I hover.
@Popular Just like my name is lit up in your message, but not your name in my message.... and vica versa from your perspective.

Fair enough. I didn't know if that was part of the bug and I was getting different behavior, or what.
@rchern you still there?

11:57 PM
Word up
@PopularDemand Haha..... i've got top answer!

@JoePhillips F***ing braggart.

It's probably my most upvoted answer and it's not even an answer
