9:00 PM
@Moshe No sorry, I missed it :-)

It's a shame @YiJiang and @RebeccaChernoff aren't here.

Yeah come to think of it, it is pretty quiet

@TheUnhandledException - Have access to Angry Birds? Listen to the Yellow birds.

@Tim must be playing minecraft

They say Oy Vey when launching.

9:01 PM
LOL

It's almost true!

@TimStone is likely sleeping
@RebeccaChernoff has been sick and is likely recuperating, again
@YiJiang ... idk, I think he made it back to unrestricted internets again

@drachenstern She has? That sucks!

@drachenstern - Yes, I heard.

I hope you feel better soon @RebeccaChernoff!
Why can't I connect to my media server! Argh.

9:03 PM
So, anyone wanna help with Symfony on gasp shared hosting?
@TheUnhandledException - In what way can't you connect?

@Moshe What seems to be the issue?

Why is my internets slowing to a crawl like this...

You see, your front controller, the index.php, is not in the root of the Symfony stuff you download

user image
4

@Moshe In the way the Finder says "Connecting to smb://meryl.local ..." ad infinitum

9:03 PM
it's in web/
if you ran the server yourself, you'd make your document root /path/to/symfony/web

@balpha ROFLMAO

@balpha - heh

is feeling somewhat better today
Crazy last day at work hehehe

RewriteRule ^$ /path/to/aymfony/web [L]

@RebeccaChernoff - Good to hear.
@mootinator - Is that supposed to go into .htaccess?
Can't edit .htaccess without renaming it because @Moshe is on Mac OS

9:05 PM
@mootinator then the references to css/ and js/ in the layouts are wrong, because they're under web/ and symfony assumes web/ is your document root

@RebeccaChernoff yay last day \o/ Yatta!
@RebeccaChernoff doubleplusgood

gotta rewrite css/, js/, images/ if you're gonna do that... if i'm not forgetting things

@drachenstern - You mean:
Good++ like C++ ?

@drachenstern You know me so well!
'Ello @TheUnhandledException
@RebeccaChernoff \o/

@Moshe that would be newspeak, aka the book 1984 by Orwell

9:06 PM
Err?

i've been awake since sunday night, i'm done thinking

Newspeak is a fictional language in George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. The term was also used to discuss Soviet phraseology. Orwell included an essay about it in the form of an appendix in which the basic principles of the language are explained. Newspeak is closely based on English but has a greatly reduced and simplified vocabulary and grammar. This suits the totalitarian regime of the Party, whose aim is to make any alternative thinking—"thoughtcrime", or "crimethink" in the newest edition of Newspeak—impossible by removing any words or possible constructs which describe the i...

@Moshe so you don't get to decide where the documentroot for the site is?

I'm not sure.
@mootinator How would I check?

@Moshe Domain "destination" on their control panel.

9:09 PM
Considering that the FCC is attempting to take over the Internet, we'll all be speaking Newspeak soon enough.

@moot - Oh, 1and1

@RebeccaChernoff Glad to hear you're feeling somewhat better!
@TimStone Hey there

@mootinator okay, logged in, now what?
Oh, i can change that, so what?

So, point it to the symfony /web folder, I assume...

And that's where my site will be?
@DanGrossman - That what you were discussing?

9:12 PM
that's where the index.php will be, yes
which puts your code and the framework code above the document root so people cant access it directly through your web server

I can't do that now, on the live server.
Is there a different way to do it?
Like, tell Symfony about it's subdirectory status some other way?

possibly, but I don't know it

Okay, so basically, I need to change the root folder of my server.
Yes?

ok, How would I do it on a local development server?

9:15 PM
you can work on your site on your xampp install and just worry about it when you're done
how do you work with xampp now?

So just extract symfony to my root and start from there?
I have a coupla subfolders for diff sites.

Lol.

@mootinator - Erm?

i set up vhosts like I do on a live server

Explain, please/

9:16 PM
All the comments were like: "Doesn't work."

and give each site its own http://hostname

That's cool, but how do I do that?

c:\\something\xampp\apache\conf\extra\httpd-vhosts.conf, I think is the path...

In case you can't tell, I' m a bit outdated on my information.

@DanGrossman Good point, @Moshe you should just be able to create a subdomain on the 1and1 control panel.

9:17 PM
to create your own hostnames in windows, you point them to 127.0.0.1 in your hosts file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts)

@DanGrossman That's it?
12 mins ago, by Moshe
Can't edit .htaccess without renaming it because @Moshe is on Mac OS
And on Mac OS, I assume that it's similar?

nfc :x

ok

i'm sure mac has some kind of hosts file, since linux does...
but I don't know where or how it's used

/private/etc/hosts

9:20 PM
or not

Found a tutorial

it's not the one I wrote, is it
I forgot I wrote one.

Sweet.

I forget where it is though

9:23 PM
god I"m tired, where is the UPS truck with my google tv already

Ugh.
4:30
Seems like an acceptable time to give up on my last workday of the year.

lucky you, I have manana and then most of next week

I was running a 5 day vacation day deficit coming into this year. This is the only break I'll have gotten aside from the 5 days I was in the hospital w/wife and baby.

I probably have extra vaca days that I haven't "used", but I've taken enough personal time I'm not worried about it.

:-(
I'm eating a week at the end of this year

9:34 PM
ugh
I can't do this whole Virtual hosts thing
It's directing me to the Root of XAMPP
ah, hang on

need help there @Moshe?
My iMac decided to stop working for me so it looks like I'm taking a break for a bit, lol
hey there @ChrisF

Evening - can't stop long. Just checking e-mail etc.

I know the feeling
How goes?

hola @ChrisF

OK. Done a bit of food shopping for Christmas tonight. Got the tree to decorate

9:47 PM
anybody wanna help me figure out why my customer's data looks like they just did a shitton of manual entry with a byzantine business rule? ;)

Because they did?

@ChrisF whatca having?
@drachenstern I'm with @ChrisF on this one ;-)

On Christmas day? The traditional turkey and all the trimmings - roast spuds, sprouts (home grown hopefully), stuffing etc.

@ChrisF Yum!
@drachenstern did you hear I set up a webcam based security system to warn me of crazy bitches roaming around my house when I am away? :-)
Works great except for one minor issue

Q: What would cause "crossover" between two USB2 webcams when using motion?

JoshI am using the Motion package for linux to act as a security system with two Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000 webcams. In general it's working very well but I'm experiencing a weird issue. Every now and then the feed from one cam will exhibit "crosstalk" or "crossover" from the other cam, in sweeping ba...

Weird behaviour there

9:52 PM
Are they both on the same USB controller?

in other news Skeet hit 250k rep, where's the party? :P

Well, shopping time, good night all...

points the stalker in @MarcGravell's general direction

@radp Makes my 32K look a bit pathetic - but then again it makes anyone else's rep look a bit pathetic so I don't feel so bad

@ellebetz @orenmazor Yes, but I chose "oy" because it would be funnier to a group of people the message wasn't directed at.
Yes, I did.

9:57 PM
@mootinator sweet
@TheUnhandledException I did not hear, gonna read the question now...

@ircmaxell Sorry I was talking to my boss. You still around?
I guess not
@ircmaxell I was trying to figure out if they were both on the same USB controller. I don't think they are but +1 for you or anyone else who can confirm/deny
@radp LOL. I never expect to be anywhere near that. I was just happy to get my Fanatic badge :-D

I really sweated this conversion... Changing user ID and image like that.

that's great
ug, I am about to kill my computer. I hate technology sometimes!
3

Josh, you able to run those two cameras on ANOTHER computer that's not a Core i5 with the 3400 chipset?

it locked up while I was rebooting (which I was doing because it was acting weird) and it locked up while reclaiming unused space from my encrypted user home directory. So I didn't want to hard reboot it because that might have corrupted my home directory. But I was left with no other choice
@drachenstern I may be able to run them off a PowerPC G4
you think there's an issue with the chipset?
I can also install a PCE USB card, if necessary
Just didn't want to buy one without good reason

10:11 PM
@TheUnhandledException - Hi

So what I'm thinking is that those cards are not on the southbridge, and so different behavior different model
You may not be able to do it on a core i5 as is ... I'm not entirely sure just yet, still mulling and reading

@TheUnhandledException - How do I get started with Symfony? I have a db and I've uploaded 1.4 to my server
Now what?

I am not thrilled with this system. In general I'm happy, but, I thought it was a quad core when I bought it so the performance has been underwhelming at times

@TheUnhandledException ? Ride leaves now. Can you point me in the right direction please?

10:13 PM
@Moshe It's been a while since I used Symfony... I'll look for a tutorial for you in a sec, reading @drachenstern 's wiki link

Thanks.

@Moshe I'll @ you when I find something

well now idk, you have an 82801 it would appear

thanks

which should handle the USB fine ...

10:13 PM
I need Symfony or another CRUD capable system.
PHP 5.2.14
on shared hosting

I mean, the 82801 isn't exactly a new ICH
what box is this? Dell? HP? whitebox? Laptop? Desktop?

This was a cheap-ish system from BestBuy...
Dell Desktop (tower) Inspiron 550i (I think)

that crap about using a second USB for bandwidth doesn't apply to you, but if it can't differentiate the two cameras (either in the driver or the app) cleanly then you may just need a second camera

@drachenstern need anything from /proc?
@drachenstern I'm confused. I have a second camera...?

nothing jumps out at me, mulling ... been 24months+ since I last run my linux stuff :S
@TheUnhandledException sorry, like logitech or something, new vendor
force two drivers (in theory)

10:17 PM
Ah. Well I was considering that anyway since the outside one tries to autofocus and the glare in midafternoon confuses it
if you answer, I will upvote, that's very helpful
2 mins ago, by drachenstern
that crap about using a second USB for bandwidth doesn't apply to you, but if it can't differentiate the two cameras (either in the driver or the app) cleanly then you may just need a second camera
That point specifically, is helpful

lemme see if I can do more damage than that ;)

sweet :-D
brb

does core i5 sound right on this box?

sorry stepped AFK for a sec
@drachenstern sounds right, yes

marked as "Quad-core power!", which is bullshit
It's used as a VMware server so quad core would be way more helpful than HT

yep, that's what I figured.
oh this is a VMWare server host?

10:30 PM
Good news, my iMac passed all disk checks, and I can log back in with no apparent ill-effects. Whew
@drachenstern It is

yay @ whew

I was trying to run Motion inside a VM, but, that failed

and the cameras are being passed through or handled by the host?

Directly by the host, for some reason the Vms couldn't read from them

what load is the CPU under?
@TheUnhandledException passthrough concerns, let's get them working then we can find out why that ;)

10:31 PM
1.36 right now, but it gets as high as 6 or 8 sometimes
sec, lemme pull up cacti graphs and tell you load when it's acting weird

Q: Is vote fraud detected on stack exchange sites?

Andrew GrimmAre anti vote fraud mechanisms in place for all of the Stack Exchange web sites, or only for sites in the extended trilogy? Background: In the biostar mailing list, there's some discussion on suspected vote fraud.

I had to create the stackexchange-1.0 tag, so this probably is OT

OK @drachenstern, load was ~1-2 at 5:05pm, and it was messing up arounf then
One sec, lemme put my socks on...

YEY!!!! I'M FREEEEE!!!!

@JoshsSocks Not exactly. You're here to do my bidding. Send @drachenstern the images pls

Pfft. Fine.

10:43 PM
So load was ~1.1 then, and it was crosstalking...
or whatever we want to call it

I <3 cacti!
AH HA! A security cam video of the homeowner association natzis prowling around!
@drachenstern load seems to be consistently about 1.1 - 1.4 when it happens. But load's like that when it's working properly, too

@TheUnhandledException here's a graph of load for the past 6 hours:

10:58 PM
@TheUnhandledException yeah, I'm writing a response now, but I think I took a left turn in the middle so backtracking

@drachenstern I like left turns. Then again, I am a left-foot sock...

@JoshsSocks You are so stupid sometimes. Shoes come in left and right varieties, not socks!

@TheUnhandledException What can I say? When you created me you must have forgotten to give me a brain...

(No, my work is not driving me insane. Really. I'm just fine! :-)

you have way too much fun with a sockpuppet account

This is true :-)

A: What would cause "crossover" between two USB2 webcams when using motion?

drachensternTo the first point: USB1.1 was a lot slower than USB2.0, in most cirumstances. Note that devices can still connect at the lower 1.1 speed of 12Mbps instead of the faster 480Mbps, but usually when this occurs it's either because the port is autonegotiating low or it is because one of the two devic...

everyone feel free to flame the guy what doesn't have linux/unix installed ;)
best option: get a new PCI USB card

Awesome, thanks!!
I have a USB2.0 PCI card in my G4 server, maybe I'll gaffle that and put it in the Dell around new years when I ahev some time off
but that's a very thorough answer, I appreciate it! :-)
I suggest that @MichaelMrozek upvote it, clearly lots of time went into it

I try for thorough on something like this, it's not exactly "how does i++ work" but I don't know that I'm 100% correct, ya know? I'm just mostly sure I'm right.
you might refresh, I've put a few edits :S

look at that beautiful Helvetica.

@drachenstern That's AWESOME

I know right?

11:25 PM
Woah
> Turns out the problem was caused by using passive USB extention cables. I discovered that if there is a passive extention used on any camera, it causes random problems with the USB bus
I am using a USB extension cable for the indoor cam

Yeah, I didn't think that might be what you were doing, but it could be related
I aim for thoroughness
I just miss from time to time

Nah, you did good
I may try and make a poor man's active USB extension on my own via a USB hub if I have one lying around
that'll be easier to test than installing a PCI card
then again, it may be worth ~$15, even if that doesn't solve the issue I'm sure I can use this for something else:

Why not hook up both cameras to the computer first and get rid of the passive cable long enough to see if that's the problem?
it'll take less time than waiting on a cable too ;)

...
feels stupid
oooooookay, that's a much better idea!

I do it ALLLL the time

11:34 PM
I mean clearly one of the cameras won't be doing it's job, because it won't be in position, but so what, it will as you said show if the extension cable is the issue
Sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees ;-)

Rubber duck debugging, Rubber Ducking, or the Rubber Duckie Test is an informal term used in software engineering to refer to a method of debugging code. The name is a reference to an apocryphal story in which an unnamed expert programmer would keep a rubber duck by his desk at all times, and debug his code by forcing himself to explain it, line-by-line, to the duck. The process is to meticulously explain code to an inanimate object, such as a rubber duck. It is expected that when the programmer comes across a piece of code that is incorrect, they will realize this. The method exploits c...
talk it out man, talk it out

@drachenstern You don't need to sell me on the benefits of talking to myself...

remember? :-)

hahahaha

Actually it's dark now, the cams are doing no good, perfect time to test!

11:37 PM
test 1 2 3
test passed! hooray!

@radp unit testing your $.count() method?

Genius! That's a much better target than $.uselessChatDemo()
(although then it'd have to be test 1 2 3 4 get)

OK. Cameras reconfigured, here goes!
(no I'm not sure how this constitutes getting my work done... )
@drachenstern so far, so good

don't worry, I haven't gotten mine done either ;)
and I still HAVE to get a timesheet together by tomorrow

Does anyone know how to make a Firefox addon? I am having problems to add a button on the Customize Toolbar window...

11:44 PM
@BrunoLM Sorry, not I...

You're not forced to use ports 20 & 21 for ftp are you? As long as you tell your users which ports you are using any value > 1023 is OK isn't it? (It's been a while since I had to get this involved with ftp ports)

I created a Netscape Navigator Plugin once, about 10 years ago...
@ChrisF Well, keep in mind that 21 is just the control port

Well, thanks :P

Ah - that explains my confusion - as I said it's been a while...

@BrunoLM Wish I could help. Post a real question, I'll ask around and direct people to it

Already did, but the interesting tags are killing this question. Not everyone adds "firefox", the question has only 2 views...

@ChrisF I think it might be OK with passive FTP, not sure, let me do a quick search. In the meantime I am almost positive you can use an arbitrary port for S ftp

@TheUnhandledException - don't worry. I answered a question on SF about FTP ports, but ended up deleting it. It was for my own peace of mind really.

@BrunoLM have a +1 as a consolation prize... a bounty might help also, but I'll direct anyone I think might know to it
@ChrisF Ahh
Ok, makes sense :-)
On our newest servers I don't even open the FTP port, I force our clients to use SFTP
FTP is antiquated and insecure, IMO

I've just created it. If I don't get any answers I will surely add a bounty on this one. Thanks for the upvote and for spreading it :)

sure thing. Least I can do. That and pass you a beer, this is the tavern after all ;-)

11:49 PM
Well, I have to work tomorrow...
ah, what the hell it's Christmas

@TheUnhandledException cheers for the info.

@BrunoLM I'm supposed to be working now, so, I'm clearly not a good role model ;-)

hahaha

@ChrisF no problem :-)

Bah.
I hate when I create a new SE account then find the answer to my question before getting around to asking it.

11:52 PM
Don't sweat it @mootinator, you'll need the account to upvote the question anyway ;-)

Good point.

lmao, good point

@TheUnhandledException Wait, what? Did you know I was looking at one of your answers?

I think it being six I should leave, ttyl, in about ten minutes ;)

@drachenstern LOL, be safe

Unfortunetly if that's the answer you were upvoting you probably have a not-very-fun situation on your hands @mootinator :-(

@TheUnhandledException Yep, I have an unreliable mac on my hands. I was specifically looking for a Mac equivalent of memtest86, thinking it would just not work for some reason.

@mootinator if it's intel, memtest86+ works just great
