12:00 AM
@radp ya think? ;)
Not my laptop, not my house, not my city, not my kids, not my problem

Oh, so shrug it then.

I shouldn't make light of the situation tho, the kids didn't do it to themselves, and it's not their fault their daddy is constantly in jail and that that is probably the best tech they'll own this year ...

Mutter something about a flux capacitor and then hang up.

TMI

....Now I feel bad.

12:01 AM
but when my sister in law calls me and gets upset cos I can't tell her the magic keypress to make technology "just work" then ... idk what to say
@TimStone I almost feel bad.
then I remember that instead of doing drugs and getting into crime and effing my family I decided instead to a) not have kids, and b) be a responsible member of society

@drachenstern Power button
Hit it once and keep it that way.

like I said, I feel bad for the kids, but ... not my problem, and I can't save 'em all

All tech problems solved!

@radp I wish ;)

This is true.
I like using my hand-waving magic to solve people's computer problems.

12:02 AM
Besides, this is once again #FirstWorldProblems ... who really has a lot going against them when the big problem of the day is outdated computers?

They call me over and I wave my hand and then magically they can't repro their issue anymore.
2

they have food, clothes, running water, shelter, etc. They're in a much better position than they could be.
@TimStone hahah, yeah, I have that one too
except when the boss is around :(

Yeah, I wish it worked in that scenario too :P

reckon if I changed it to cooking.SE?

12:04 AM
Hah

@radp oy indeed.

moar foods!! stackoverflow.com/review/… <-- results!!

Hahahah, brilliant
And someone said there'd be no need for a migration path from SO to Cooking...

12:07 AM
stackoverflow.com/review/… <-- even dogs get their day
@TimStone hahahah

I think you're having too much fun with this.

I'm skeptical that there's such a thing as too much fun.

@TimStone don't you mean brillant?
@RebeccaChernoff no, I stopped. my query finished

@drachenstern ;)

know what sucks? no wifi when I get home cos AT&TSUCKS
yay for borrowing a cup of wifi

12:10 AM
Hiya all.

hiya moshe
does fizzbuzz make more sense now?

@drachenstern - got ur explanation of FizzBuzz, yea, I knew of it, by another name
Well, various names, but I don't have a specific name for it.
Is there a "correct" way to write it? I suspect I should be using modulo for that, no?

@Moshe you fail the test :p ;)
title is shaolin students playing soccer (not the actual title, which is 38. Shaolin students play soccer at Tagou Wushu School in Zhengzhou, Henan province July 11, 2010. Picture taken July 11, 2010. REUTERS/Donald Chan)

has a new router on the way

There's lots of ways to write it, but yes usually modulo is considered apropos
let fizzBuzz (x:int) =
 match x with
 | x when x % 15 = 0 -> "FizzBuzz"
 | x when x % 3 = 0 -> "Fizz"
 | x when x % 5 = 0 -> "Buzz"
 | x   -> x.ToString()

let main = System.Console.WriteLine(String.concat System.Environment.NewLine (List.map fizzBuzz [1..100]))
@TimStone what did you get?

12:20 AM
@drachenstern It's some Netgear device that the FCC is using to measure internet connection data and compare that against plan information.

@TimStone I hear you're getting a new router, you should totally drop that and use jQuery instead
@TimStone interesting ... so sort of like "does ____________ actually deliver the amount they say they will" or something else?

Pretty much, yeah.

Were you contacted directly on this deal?

There was a sign up thing, I think I got the link from an Ars article.

12:24 AM
Yep
I read the terms and conditions a few times over to be sure they weren't snooping on my data, and basically what the device does is simulate general user activities between your end point and their servers.

Interesting ... what about QoS and such? Does it know that you're using the connection and slag off or what? You're not exactly known for keeping a 9-5 schedule ;)

@RebeccaChernoff :p
@drachenstern Good question. I'm not sure how it determines that, and my attempting to find out with violate my agreement :P

I see that, I'm signing up now just in case they'll still have 1 or 2 left ;)
What did you put for service tier?

Uhh, what were the options?

12:29 AM
it's just a box
no * either

Oh, I may have left it blank then.

Q: Some way to put emphasis on code, please

RosinanteIn dealing with a wall of code, it would be handy to be able to paint some of it red, or bold, or something. Editing the question to highlight the part that actually matters can be an effective part of answering.

For some unknown reason, I read that as "paint some of it blood red" and immediately thought of chat.SE's notification highlight.

Hey! I made real business apps for the Apple II :)
Some years ago :)

6:29 AM
@belisarius: No one's saying nothin'. The Apple ][ was a great machine.

Just checking if I should get bold :)
It was in 1981, I think. It was amazing then

I got to borrow the school's, during summers. Pretty amazed, at the time.

HELLO

hello Tyler

I got kicked out of a computer lab of Apple IIGs computers in 4th grade for writing a BASIC program

well, you were hacking. what did you expect?

I just added analytics to all the sites I control, simply to reinforce the fact that no one can find them :)

it better clear up soon. Don't want to wait another 500 years for a lunar eclipse

there'll be two more next year..
it was like 1/4 covered last time i went out and looked

It's been raining like heck in San Diego
All week

A total lunar eclipse will take place on December 20/21, 2010. It will be visible after midnight Eastern Standard Time on December 21 in North and South America. The beginning of the total eclipse will be visible from northern Europe just before sunrise. The end of the total eclipse will be visible rising at sunset for Japan and northeastern Asia; it will also be visible in the Philippines just after sunset (as a partial lunar eclipse). It will be the first total lunar eclipse in almost 3 years, the last being on February 20, 2008. It is the second of two lunar eclipses in 2010. The fi...

thought this one was supposed to be super special. something about it falling on the equinox.

6:56 AM
Yeah. That's more rare, though I'm not sure why it's significant other than as a neat coincidence =p

Did those things have Disk Drives? I remember only 5 1/4 floppys.

there was an apple hard disk, and support for it was in ProDOS

I was in 4th grade, mind you. My nonsensical BASIC programs were nonsense.
The only reason we were supposed to be in that brand new state-of-the-art computer lab was to learn keyboarding from "PAWS".

@GregHewgill I remember working in two different versions of Basic (I think the better one was "AppleSoft" or something like that). And that beautiful 6502 Assembler

the moon is 2/3rds gone :)

@DanGrossman I astonish each day looking to nonsensical software developed by people who finished 4th grade long ago

@DanGrossman, photo or it didn't happen :)

Hmm... I don't think I can photograph it

[@belisarius, you can't use astonish like that: astonish is to be surprising, not surprised]

it doesn't show up well on my cell phone camera
and the glare from the contrast makes it look fuller than it is...

7:12 AM
@Benjol Thanks. So "I get surprised" is correct?

@belisarius, "I am astonished" is good too
@DanGrossman, good enough for me. I only knew there was going to be an eclipse because of the questions on photography

@Benjol Ha! I wrote that and "corrected" it later :)
I have a nice view of the eclipse, just above the pines in my garden :)

nearly total eclipse but my camera just wont pick it up
it looks almost like a full moon still

I promise you to use all my powers to get the moon back ASAP

7:19 AM
@DanGrossman, quick, read this ;)
@belisarius, where are you? I've got clouds here unfortunately :(

@Benjol Argentina

@Benjol Unfortunately my real camera's battery is dead and won't hold even 2 minutes charge, so I'm stuck with my cell phone that doesn't have any options for optical zoom or longer exposures

@DanGrossman, ah, yeah well that's gonna be a problem :)
@belisarius, ok, right side of the planet then. I think from here (Switzerland) I wouldn't be able to see it anyway - I read 'northern Europe' somewhere

@Benjol I guess in America is where you can see it better

currently trying to work out if I can marry a vertical scroll bar with a flow layout panel to make a custom list control

Wow, I just created a profile on that site... 4 days ago.
and it hasn't even populated yet, great acquisition...

did your parent company pay $6.7 billion for a useless acquisition? Mine did :-(

7:37 AM
What acquisition was that?

ah
I remember that happening
I figured they would try something strange like incorporating antivirus into the CPU

Ireland could be saved with that amount

that's not enough to save california let alone a whole country here :p

@Dan: maybe. I'm not privy. I hope we do something to make it worth the money.

Yeap. The world ended. I knew. My mother told me that just yesterday, and I scorned her. I 'll never be able to ask forgiveness.

I was a very happy man. My wonderful girlfriend and I had been dating for over a year, and so we decided to get married.

There was only one little thing bothering me....It was her beautiful younger sister. My prospective sister-in-law was twenty-two, wore very tight mini skirts, and generally was bra-less.

She would regularly bend down when she was near me, and I always got more than a nice view. It had to be deliberate. Because she never did it when she was near anyone else.

One day her 'little' sister called and asked me to come over to check the wedding invitations.

Q: Why does area51 not link to stackexchange.com as the other sites do?

@TimStone Chat should allow custom entry/exit animations; that would make my day

Heh, what did you have in mind if that were the case?

Mine would probably involve the whole window bursting into flames, and then slowly reassembling itself from the ashes. People might need to buy new computers to handle it

Q: Is it wrong to use the hand cursor for clickable items such as buttons?

Camilo MartinI've always thought the hand cursor to be the ideal visual indicator for "you may click here" to the user. We are used to see it in this context daily because of it's usage on hyperlinks and hence all web buttons.              &nbs...
