5:01 PM
Hmm, since Black Ops wasn't being cooperative, I guess I'll write some code instead...but what to work on...

Enjoy, @rchern

...

Heh

I even set it not to loop :(

I'll give you +0.5 for that.

5:06 PM
I'll take the rchern of that
"2.0+"

hahaha

@radp Shouldn't it be 5.0+? :P
Depends on the perspective, of course

@radp Touché :P

@YiJiang rchern("q:") != ":q"

pretty sure the inverse of + is -

5:07 PM
rchern("+-×÷") === "÷×-+"

@rchern Mirror of 5 = 2

@rchern So that means it was really a -2?
I guess I'm more vindictive than I thought.

rchern('123567890') = '068L92E51' There we go

Q: Php site that could handle millions of users?

user481913What do you need to do so that an existing php site can handle potentially millions of users? I'm supposing here that the site's design and architecture and code isn't really what it should be like for this kind of a site. Alternatively, how would you design a site from scratch that could handl...

These kinds of questions always amuse me.
If you don't even have the site yet, how can you possibly know that you'll have that many users? :P

@TimStone Because his idea is big.
Like Facebook, but betterer.

5:13 PM
Ah, of course. How foolish of me!

@TimStone It'll be too late when it happens (If it happens :P)

And of course the first comment on that question is about how PHP can't scale like that, heh.

You obviously need assembly.
or Ruby on Rails.

Don't make me get out the all the cool kids use Ruby video again, heh. ;)

@TimStone Anything can scale like that. It's only a matter of buying a gigantic server farm to run it, of course

5:17 PM
Right, exactly.

I'd just like to point out that while Euclid's C-Finder is cool and all, Pushy wins at Fallout Weapon .gifs:

Oh damn. :P

I think my favorite part is the dude with the tire iron just watching his buddies head go flying into the next zip code.

That GIF should even be rchern-invariant for all practical purposes =D

@radp True, if not she'll galf it, and we'll all be in trouble

5:22 PM
Yeah, I think the guy's head is all sorts of orientations as it arcs over that building..

@TimStone Now we know the origin of Shog's avatar I guess...

Hahah :P

A: Php site that could handle millions of users?

drachenstern Alternatively, how would you design a site from scratch that could handle these many users? I would say start by being lazy. By that I mean, write only the code you need, be prepared to add only the functionality you need right now to have the feature you need to work, and get it to work for...

Hahah @AidenBell ;)

lol
defending PHP, whod have thought

5:37 PM
@AidenBell ah well, life goes on. Tomorrow you can bash it ok? :p

lol Robusto is getting panned, I just added some more rippage in addition to yours @drachenstern

@AidenBell I didn't want to rip on him, but my word

Tiddlywinks database!

so you guys like my advice to be lazy and start small huh?
speaking of, I should make a tiddlywinks game in HTML5/canvas
that wouldbe fun

But yeah, I scoffed at his attempt to save face too. :P

5:39 PM
@drachenstern 10k concurrent user isn't small unless you want your app to be "always open", like, say, GMail or Facebook

@drachenstern - I have you a +1 on that, but it is a mixed bag, like "pragmatism over idealism in programmers" ... alot of hyperbole and 'one size fits all' for a world too complex to make those assertions.
I find anyway.

I agree, but for someone who thinks they need to scale to a million users on day one, telling them to start slow is IMO better advice

@drachenstern - agreed.

@YiJiang most of facebook's users aren't concurrent

@drachenstern - on lazy programming, I would say that make any architectural mistakes and pain will be felt later, but by then hopefully you are managing not coding .... so really it isn't lazy programming but "pass the buck" programming

5:44 PM
@AidenBell I think he meant it more in the sense to vigilantly avoid feature creep by doing as little as possible upfront and then move in the appropriate directions as the user base grows.

@TimStone you nailed it
you don't need a lightbox-style taggable picture architecture on day one
you need a page that lets you upload photos
a page that lets you view photos

Arguably you can still maintain a structured architecture in that way, as long as you don't block yourself out for expansion.

@TimStone @drachenstern - I know, im not referring to that post, just the general style of lazy programming

and a page that somehow lets you tag photos

@TimStone - exactly

5:45 PM
@AidenBell oh, well yeah. but still, the idea is to avoid feature creep because it might help

Because someone will have to rewrite your ungrowable mess later

otherwise I agree with you, I believe

WE ARE ALL IN AGREEMENT

PARTY!

5:45 PM
NO CARRIER

Consensus FTW!

and besides, if you haven't rewritten your entire codebase at a million users, you are not asking those sorts of scalability questions on day -50 ;)
concensus woohoo! :D

Have a thumbs up

in JavaScript on Stack Overflow Chat, 3 mins ago, by jAndy
thats possibly the only way IE6 could be even worse, if it would be written in java
@AidenBell so you work for SE?

We're glad to see that your head has assumed its usual shape. :P

5:48 PM
lol@usual shape

@drachenstern - yea why not, course I am an employee
I do all that stuff they do

@YiJiang We don't discuss that anymore.

@AidenBell cos I have no clue who works for SE

Yep well i'm one of them

cool

5:49 PM
@TimStone waves hand Of course we don't

Let's see, do we have enough people to flag @YiJiang's potential message into oblivion with a rep hit? (;

@AidenBell Copyright infringement, identity theft..

@TimStone - just going with the flow mate

@YiJiang We don't even mention the words that you mentioned, so shh. :P

@rchern Meta rep, hmmm...

5:49 PM
@AidenBell ;)

@TimStone There, see, it never happened

Very good.

Better come clean: @drachenstern im not an SE employee, nor do my opinions reflect those of SE, SO, MSO or anyone else in any way

I was curious

Though he does share a similar taste in music as I do.

5:50 PM

but was gonna just sit here and be quiet like a good noob
oh it links to their userpages, nice
I had seen it once before, but never noticed the links
I love how the sales members don't have userpages
is Zypher carrying a shotgun?

haha

Right I am off to upgrade my laptop to a non-crufty-old Fedora version

@drachenstern Never really noticed, but it does look like one, yes

@drachenstern It's for when the servers get out of hand

5:53 PM
"Hi I'm in sales and I don't use the site. Thanks for asking."
@TimStone I can see that

@AidenBell Ah, good stuff.

he also looks like the meth is wearing off in that picture ;) @Zypher I'm only playing :p

@AidenBell ... before realising that a new one is coming out next week?

@YiJiang very funny

(That's about how fast they release, right?)

5:53 PM
lol

@YiJiang so it'll work better for a week :p

once every 6 months
anyway, byes @TimStone @YiJiang @drachenstern @rchern

That's what our release schedule for this one project is, 4-6 months, heh.
G'bye

do come back and see us @AidenBell

Good bye?
Later

5:55 PM
@TimStone, this needs to get bumped up to 6 to 8 weeks.

@drachenstern Not much point in @-mentioning him, if only to get him to see our goodbyes the next morning

@rchern Yeah, I better step up the pace. :P
Arguably we could have releases much more frequently if I was more on task, but it seems I might have issues with that.

hehe

@YiJiang I wasn't sure he was gone yet
besides, he'll see it on his supermulticollider

@drachenstern His gravatar's floated off into the aether. Yeah, he's gone :P

5:57 PM
The users of this particular project's software aren't exactly the most quick-moving bunch anyway, so the release schedule is actually very quick for the space.

6:14 PM
Hm, definitely time for lunch.

yay for having the first answer by over a minute and seeing all my answers repeated around ... granted, they could've been composing when I hit answer...

Q: C# How to get current URL from the IE ?

TonyHi, I want to get the current URL from the IE (.NET 4) . To do so, I added a reference to Microsoft Interner Controls and added the code (from http://omegacoder.com/?p=63) foreach (InternetExplorer ie in new ShellWindowsClass()) { textBox1.Text = ie.LocationURL.ToString(); } but I get 2 err...

what is he saying? in the other process?
ok wow, that question seems ... funky

6:48 PM
what's the business with those"events"?

google for "welbog" :)

Finally got a phpbb rebuild done. Gawd that was awful. I hate php.

@balpha You nuked the "forever" event ending in 2019?
Now how will we construct the new weblogesque apocalyptic theories?

@rchern Really? I found that phpBB wasn't too terrible to work with. But, congrats on being done.

We added some new sanitizing rules regarding the event length.

6:59 PM
I repeat my feature request to only show me events for rooms I'm in and/or have favorited.
The events go until 2999?

i doubt that earth folks will still be alive by then

@TimStone Upgrade that borked the board, ended up rebuilding from scratch. Well, the database was still good, just had to recreate it all locally and copy of the web files. Still, not what I wanted to do in my free time this past week.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, that doesn't sound like it would have been particularly fun.

how does one go about answering this guys question? (the response to my comment about being lazy ... reposting link)

> I'll appreciate if you can point me to a plce which shows actual implementation in code... Like how do you break your code into blocks so that they can be reused and maintained easily or the changes to the code doesn't break the application. –
hey was that new? blockquoting? Seems like it hasn't worked before for me :|

One tells him/her that that is basic programming he/she should learn first?

7:04 PM
> message, and it doesn't work multi-line (like everything else)
@drachenstern Oh boy..heh

@TimStone I know right?
@TimStone the > seems like it's not worked for me before today. idk.

@drachenstern Yeah the situation seems a little more dire than I had originally anticipated. :p
@drachenstern Oh....well it's been around for a while ;)

yuppers on both I guess ;)

noms on a Mexican pizza

had a subway sandwhich. Apparently my definition of a handful of olives and hers were vastly different. I like olives and all, but I wanted a meatball sandwhich. Which leads me to my second wtf of lunch. I wanted a meatball sandwhich, not a wrapper of marinara with a little bread. Guess how satisfied I was with lunch ;)

7:13 PM
php cant handle millions of users the same time can it?
needs java enterprise

@JohannesSchaublitb hahaha, not a single server, but then, a single server can't handle millions of concurrent requests anyways

@drachenstern Hahah, I can bet. The only time I risky a sacuy kind of sub is when I get veal parmesan.

I'm waiting on the day when they can, I think IPv6 eh?

7:37 PM

A: How to spoof site referrer ?

ajrealsimply <? echo "this page is referred by google.com" ?> instead using document.write(document.referrer);, think again, u know u REFER 2.php from 1.php why would u use http_referrer ? as explained by @knoforce, http referrer is controlled by referrer, u cannot force public user to install ...

...

7:59 PM
@TimStone you know, you need to write the document what you think you want, because there's no way you can actually do something technical and be accurate
I mean, that's just crazytalk

8:12 PM
@drachenstern Right, right. Sorry everyone, my ambitions must have gotten away from me.

lol

hell read the question too.

Nice and circular-like.
WTF Adobe?
"Installer has detected that a machine restart may be pending. It is recommended that you quit the installer, restart, and try again."
Even more retarded is this survey they sent me.
"Prior to today, were you aware that Creative Suite 5 (CS5) had been released?"
Which really should read: "Prior to today, were you aware that the product you own had been release?"

Is there a way to know whether a bounty was manually awarded or auto awarded?
never mind

8:31 PM
"Approximately how often do you clear or delete the cookies on this computer?"
Now there's an interesting survey question.

8:44 PM
woohoo I'm ~250 points away from my next replevel :D

Cool stuff

I was happy not having a next rep level, and then this happened

9:08 PM
Heh, I gave Adobe lip about their licensing in that survey, but it turns out that they must have changed something and that I was wrong about what I said. :P

Not 100% on why that got six upvotes, but.. :P

10:40 PM
I thought it was an interesting snippet cause I normally only see # used to denote a comment

10:52 PM
what's the dailyrepcap and how many more hours do I have to get it? I'm at 130 now, I need only 70 more right?

hour. singular.

oh crap, oh well

The reputation cap is at 200, but only upvotes count towards the cap itself. Everything else is exempt.
Er, he has three hours? :P

oh so my accepted answers don't count towards repcap?
I guess I need to start earlier in the day then ... :|
and here I thought I was doing good getting 130 in a day. I think it's my single best day so far ;)

@TimStone neg. 1 hour and 5 minutes.

10:56 PM
@rchern Oh wow, yes, major logic fail on that one. Sorry. :)

Why you ever doubted me, one will never know. (;

@rchern you'll notice I didn't doubted you :p

I know, I should know better right? Hahah
