@AidenBell Did I not say profit :)
@AidenBell I actually can't believe people downvoted

@Diago - You were right :), I know, wtf was the downvote about

@AidenBell And the answer is 42.
Oh wait, I think I've read this book already.

OK Yeah, this is an initramdisk issue. Anyone know how to rebuild the initramdisk if you can't boot? :-/ Rescue CD?

mkinitrd
from bootcd, but you might need to chroot ... can't remember

@Diago I can see why that happened. There's no StackExchange™ Multicollider SuperDropdown™, so the movie isn't Genuine™

3:07 PM
@AidenBell Thanks. I'm netbooted from Knoppix, seeing if I can do it from here

@radp I will need to work on a way to add that in.....

@AidenBell It is a ridiculous question. I wasn't the downvoter, but I understand it.

@PopularDemand understanding-shmanding, passes spare smile your way
A few bytes for a few smiles, what could be better

Hello

Goodbye

3:16 PM
Jerk...
:P
How is everyone doing this morning?

Procrastified

:-)
morning?
Its friday evening here and I will leave the office in 5 minutes for weekend :-)

It is morning in all the normal places...

beside that, hello :-)

@Chacha102 I must be living in somewhere abnormal then, because it's nearly midnight here
Hmmm... fancy that!

3:24 PM
yeah weekend! see you later, I'm going home! ;-)

peace

now genuine™

@radp Sounds like a Microsoft anti-piracy campaign. Especially the ™ bit

@radp - Nice Chet***d touch

@radp Psh, that's obviously just a sticker. ...aaand now I want a Stack Exchange sticker to go with my SO/SF/SU/HTG stickers.

3:28 PM
> Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
>:o

@radp "Your copy of Windows is now genuine™ "

@TheUnhandledException :S
check your menu.lst

Going to try reinstalling the kernel

@TheUnhandledException Doesn't smack of a kernel issue

@AidenBell OK. I was reading suggestion from ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=296809
> Reinstalling the linux-image package not only reinstalls all the files, but also updates a lot of programs that may be causing the kernel panic
But I'll check menu.lst first

3:31 PM
Ah, maybe so
yea, I would

@AidenBell Thanks, you just saved me a major headache :-)
Entering grub boot editor and chaning from UUID to /dev/sda1 worked

@TheUnhandledException Good stuff

Hi

user151055
3:35 PM
I wanted to know how can i reopen my question at SO? I know it needs votes to reopen but how do I make people to vote for it?

@fahad Post the URL of the question as a single chat message, I'll have a look. Why was it closed?

user151055
It was a bit irrevelent

@fahad By editing it so that the conditions under which it was originally closed does not apply anymore

@fahad It probably won't be reopened then :-)

user151055
I want to offer a bounty for it

3:36 PM
Post the URL, I'll give more detailed opinion

user151055
@TheUnhandledException It wasnt that much irrevelent.Have a look:stackoverflow.com/questions/3860794/…

@fahad If you have >250 rep, you can vote for it yourself.
Yeah, that question needs more information.

user151055
I have two votes so far

Q: Program to read a code and count the number of lines in it,do not include comments and blank lines in count

fahadI came across the following question in a programming quiz.I made the following program but its not working,please guide me about the logic and how to proceed. #include<stdio.h> int main() { int count; char ch; FILE *fptr; clrscr(); fp=fopen("test.cpp","r"); if(fp==...

"this is my goal and this is my code" questions almost always fail, because people don't know where you're stuck or what part you need help with.

3:38 PM
> I came across the following question in a programming quiz.I made the following program but its not working,please guide me about the logic and how to proceed.
Far too vague @fahad
You'll need to have a specific question

user151055
changed

For example: "The number of lines in the test file is 1,234 but my program is sating it's 2468, and I'm not sure why"

user151055
I only have a problem with the comments issue in the program

user151055
@TheUnhandledException :Can I have some up votes now?

@fahad If I understand correctly, you're trying to create a program which counts all the lines of code in the input file?

user151055
3:40 PM
@PopularDemand:I voted for it

And you want to exclude blank lines and comment lines?

user151055
@TheUnhandledException Yes absolutely

@fahad Is this a homework question?
(I want to tag it as such if it is)

user151055
I came across it in a quiz,wanted to know how could I do it

mwahahaha
Evil laugh

user151055

user151055
Please....

user151055
Can I anyhow bring it into the newest questions?

@fahad No, it will never be new again.
Edits will bump it on the main page, though.

user151055
3:47 PM
How should i neglect the count of those comments in the code?

@fahad I don't understand what you want that the existing answers haven't given you.

user151055
@PopularDemand: I understand that I was wrong with that logic but I need a hint how to proceed

What works, and what doesn't work?

Q: Program to read a code and count the number of lines in it,do not include comments and blank lines in count

fahadI am trying to create a program which, given an input file, returns the count of all the lines of code in the input file, excluding blank lines and comment lines. I have written the following code, however I need help with how to exclude lines containing comments and blank lines. #include<std...

Other than the homework issue, not sure why that was closed

user151055
3:52 PM
It wasnt hw

@AidenBell I'm guessing lack of info.

mind you, it was editing for clarity
Reopened

user151055
@AidenBell:thanks..

@PopularDemand - at least the guy came for help and edited for clarity / @TheUnhandledException edited whatever

@AidenBell And that's good, but the five people who voted to close don't have future-vision.

3:55 PM
Sorry guys, 3 calls came in at once =o

user151055
I dont agree that it was supposed to be closed,I had a real question

@PopularDemand - Na, wasn't making comment on them ... nm

Looks like your question's open again @fahad
@fahad It was a reql question, but was far too vague as it was written

user151055
Everyday I found tons of stupid questions being answered

@fahad - Relax, it is reopen

3:56 PM
@fahad Well, that's not a good reason.

I typed a long WP post, press publish, and my school's damn Wifi Login page pops up
There goes the last 20 minutes of my life

@Chacha102 We've all been there (or in very similar locations).
You have our collective empathy, I'm sure.

@fahad Come in here more often. Every day we rant about stupid questions :-)

Q: What is a bad feature of Stack Overflow?

Chacha102I know that lots of people get help from the site everyday, and in general it is a great site. I love answering questions and getting answers for other knowledgeable programmers. But..... There is probably one feature, one thing about Stack Overflow (or related sites) that gets me annoyed. That...

user151055
@the

3:58 PM
Or this

Tim
@Chacha102 My university just let anyone join the wireless network with no verification whatsoever...
But used Cisco Clean Access to audit computers connected to the dorm wired LAN, heh.

@TheUnhandledException - Nice editing on that Q, it makes much more sense lol

user151055
*smiles...

Not a bad question, but I'm sorely disappointed by the title of this question

Q: How to select only top-level li in recursive menu?

TruMan1How do I select only first-level li's? If I do 'ul li', it also selects the children. Is there a way to select only the top level and not the children using CSS? If not, I am ok with using jQuery, but how would I select it in that case too? <ul> <li class="administration first"> ...

Imagine Googlebot getting caught in a infinitely recursive menu system...

I love this one:

Q: How to deal with IndentationError?

abhiError Details: File "imp.py", line 55 key = get Key() ^ IndentationError: expected an indented block Below is the Code: # Caesar Cipher MAX_KEY_SIZE = 26 def getMode(): while True: print('Do you wish to encrypt or decrypt or brute force a message?') mode = raw_...

The exception says the exact problem lol

4:00 PM
@Tim Silly.
My alma mater got rid of wired connections this year.
You can still request the ports in your room be turned on, but by default everyone's wireless-only.

@AidenBell Thanks :-)

@PopularDemand Wow... that actually sounds pretty good

I <3 editing

There are some places in my school where the only way to get internet is to pull along a really long ethernet cable

4:02 PM
(@AidenBell @Chacha102 @YiJiang)

@PopularDemand Doesn't get used often enough, that place

@YiJiang agreed

Tim
@PopularDemand Nice. We didn't have that kind of signal coverage, for some reason, despite our campus being very small.
Of course, this was taken care of by the same IT department who purchased course registration software that included non-authenticated users in its "maximum concurrent users" limit..

@Tim IT Departments.... People like us always think we can do their jobs better than they can, if only they'd let us

Tim
It's interesting how much longer it takes for everyone to register when the people who actually managed to log in can't get their requests processed because the system tells them that too many people are on at once, heh.
@YiJiang The job does always look easier from the outside, I admit. But there are just some things... :P

4:09 PM
reminisces about old Novell F1->IE->C:->DOS bug at school

@Tim Yes, but I've actually looked at what they do, and I still think I can do it better!

Anyone need anything at the grocers?

so, any site graduations today?

@LasseVKarlsen Yes.

This year, they replaced the entire front page with (of all horrors) a Flash site!

Tim
4:11 PM
@LasseVKarlsen Yes...which is why I'm off to one now. :)

It used to be perfectly valid HTML + CSS

ProWebmasters should graduate soon

@YiJiang Transfer.

and Cooking

And they'd just wiped it out!

4:12 PM
gaming, webmasters, and cooking were each a day apart...but there's more than a day between for graduations

@PopularDemand Not really transfer, it's just not the same any more

@YiJiang I meant you. You should transfer to a school that doesn't have a Flash website. You can do better!
I mean, you hang out here, so you can't be a total mor- that is to say, you participate in SO, so you've got a good head on your shoulders.

@PopularDemand It's the best... nah, don't want to give away too much

Cooking:
> This site is nearing the end of its beta and will be launching very soon.
Webmasters:
> This site has finished its beta and will be launching very soon.
Emphasis mine.

well yes this makes sense
webmasters is past 90 days
today is cooking's 90th day

4:15 PM
Yep.

@PopularDemand Yay! Time to bug Jin about minor inconsistencies and cross-browser display problems on those sites!

which is kinda the point of my question, not an answer (;

Mmmhmmm... Pro Webmaster's design is good

I quite like the logo, although I haven't the foggiest idea what it has to do with pro webmasters
Ah:
> Webmaster is a science. A lot of server optimizing, SEO etc. So I thought an Atom metaphor would be appropriate. The 3 protons' colors came from the Google logo. I'm sure a lot of tools you use are related to Google in some ways.

Really digging the blue. It's strange though, the "Ask Question" button looks just like another tab

4:22 PM
That's how it is on the betas and it seems to work fine; I'm not sure it needs to be offset specially

@MichaelMrozek The explanation I've seen for the big thing in the middle is that it's the browser's reload button :P doesn't look like the one on mine though
@MichaelMrozek True, true...
Oh, and everybody should vote for this:
5
A: "ASK QUESTION" is not really obvious as a button

LessPop_MoreFizzFeature Request: Make the Ask Question button start shooting lasers on mouseover. Lasers!

We really need more lasers!!!

looking at the gaming site gives me a headache

@rchern At least they changed the pixel font.
@MichaelMrozek Yeah, I liked the explanation, but if you have to explain it in the first place....

not everywhere

@rchern Static elements are more excusable. They don't need to be read as often; after a few visits to the site, you just remember what goes where.

4:33 PM
@rchern The main problem for me with the Gaming design is that the elements are really mismatched
The fonts, color scheme, and sizes are not very well matched

@PopularDemand not just static elements, but who cares what kind of element it is if it makes me dizzy? i'm not joking. i cannot spend more than a few seconds there heh

@rchern Just noticed that Jin dropped the background color on the main column. What's up with that?

@rchern No, you're right. You have it worse than I do, apparently. I just... pretend the rest of the site isn't there, and don't look at the pixellated bits, and it doesn't affect me much. Not that I'll really be using it for another 11 days anyways.

huh? 11 days?

@rchern Correct.

4:38 PM
@rchern Is it the faint strips that permeate the design?
They're suppose to look somewhat like the scanlines of old display screens

@PopularDemand i wasn't confirming, i was asking about the meaning
@YiJiang the font

@rchern Mys - teeeeeeeer - ious!

meh, why mention it then? oy

Fallout: New Vegas North America release date.

@rchern Really? I mean, the font's bad, but since he dropped it from 90% of the elements it should at least be bearable now, eh?

4:41 PM
(I wasn't confirming either, I was being intentionally obtuse.)

@TheUnhandledException You've got Mail!
I haven't heard that sound in my head in a long time.

@YiJiang it is still there to be read.

@Fosco I wonder if whoever recorded it is still rich from the royalties.

@rchern Now, now... if you stop thinking about it, it won't be there!

Can you imagine, getting a penny every time someone got an e-mail?

4:43 PM
@YiJiang, .......

Hey, at least it's not Comic Sans

Or even a penny per hundred e-mails.

I'd rather it be Comic Sans. Doesn't make me dizzy

@rchern Excuse me, please refer to that font by its proper name: The Font of the Gods

@PopularDemand And angels are suppose to drop down from the ceiling and sing hallelujah, eh
Let's not give that font too much credit

4:46 PM
@Fosco Thank goodness. It's a damn annoying sound ;-)
Sorry, was in a meeting

Oh no, someone invented Comic Serif (mildly NSFW) dafont.com/hvd-comic-serif.font

Damn work getting in the way of chat again ;-)
@PopularDemand haha, so great!

@PopularDemand Not too interesting, from a typographical point of view
But +100 for that sign!
It's just your mom and pops slab serif font, only with a little more curve

I always wanted to make a font...

@Fosco No you don't
Trust me
(If you don't trust me, check out FontForge)

4:50 PM
If you're really sick, look at this April Fools joke pulled by Ascender's Corp.
> Verdana and Georgia, two of the most widely used fonts found on nearly every computer in the world, appear to have had a sort of digital tryst during their years in storage and together produced a font called Verdorgia

Lunchtime for me. Catch you guys later

@TheUnhandledException hehe.. I have an iPad app for creating fonts too..
@YiJiang That's a neat font! did they actually release it?

@Fosco AN iPAD APP FOR CREATING FONTS!?!?!
I would slit my wrists, LOL
But, to each his own :-)

I haven't used it, but yeah... hah

@Fosco Yes they have. Go look at the last paragraph

4:58 PM
/me just spent $325 on TigerDirect.com

what'd ya buy me?

@Fosco It's like complex bezier / gaussian curves, I wouldn't think that would be fun with a touchscreen lol
@rchern A SmileyReverser™

noooooooo
return it!

OK if I don't get out of here I;ll starve to death

actually, keep it for yourself (:

4:59 PM
Excatly @rchern 's evil plan, I'm sure :-)

I bought a Samsung 14mp digital camera

@Fosco, I'll love it, thanks so much!

it's not the DSLR I would like, but, it's close...

What the... I just got an asterisk in my tab name, but when I clicked on the little blue "1" it lit up "@rchern" in @TheUnhandledException 's last post...

your name was in there.

5:02 PM
@rchern Don't you need a backup?
@rchern I call shenanigans.

view the history.
but first, did you wanna lay any money on it...?
(;

@rchern Gah, chat messages have public edit history!

I have a meeting with one of my side-job clients after work today.. I get the feeling it's not going to be fun.

Tim
Ah, restocked on Pepsi Throwback, happy days.
@Fosco Why's that?

@Tim Just a feeling.. but they're not a very communicative client and the job has gone way out of scope without any extra compensation.

Tim
5:11 PM
@Fosco Ah..tough break. Hopefully it won't be too bad.

@PopularDemand LOL. Yes
I was indecisive
Wasn't sure who wanted to starve me to death
Clearly it was you @PopularDemand ;-)

@TheUnhandledException Hold on, e-mailing admins with bribes to remove certain edits from public view, be with you in a sec....

@Tim thanks

@PopularDemand LOL. Sure thing. But I'll be gone

Hello

Hi Chacha, what's up?

5:26 PM
nothing much

why does their flair have so much deadspace?

Tim
@rchern So you don't feel complete until you have thousands of each kind of badge (and legally change your name to something lengthy) of course

heh

Tim
My measly 4.6K combined rep is now mocking me, compelling me to go find more questions to answer....though that'll have to wait until I get work done, heh.

@rchern I don't know.. it's terrible. Since they copied you, at least they could've made it look good. :)

5:40 PM
haha

I posted an answer to a question on OnStartups... It was totally misunderstood and I got downvoted and nasty comments.. had to delete it. I can understand how some people get really upset and leave when stuff like that happens.

Tim
Anyone know what (if anything) is supposed to be done about questions like this?
