11:06 PM
Eve, all

Evening Grace

Good evening @Grace

Eve, @Fallen, @Arda

So wait, here we can go good evening, but I get called on good morning? :<

@Mana It is evening.

11:07 PM
I called you on "Morning, or actually it's afternoon"

I have a friend who says "Morning is whenever you get on the internet for the first time"

You implied that it wasn't morning. Good evening just implies that it's evening somewhere.

Oh, right.

I could highlight all the fallacies in the statements I just gave

My apologies.
It's okay. Any statement by Grace sounds correct.

11:09 PM
But I am operating on a logic whose founding law is "The existence of a statement implies the veracity of that statement"

Why is everything so brainiac-y today..

I only mention because I was just explaining the whole "P implies P" statement yesterday

Well.. P kinda does imply P
Unless you wouldn't agree that if one event occurs that doesn't mean that that same event occurred.

I'm more translating that the existence of any statement P implies that P is true.

You mean that saying something makes it true? That's not "P implies P"

11:11 PM
morning is the time i prefer to sleep.

I use P -> P as shorthand. The technical rule is what I mentioned earlier.

Very well. It is quite misleading as a shorthand to be honest.

Artistic liberty is allowed for one in a degree in it

if P then P; P; therefor P.
tautology

In more practical terms, if X = 1 then 1 = X

11:13 PM
Technically, eloggic (two Gs, it is important) also has a first rule that precedes that one, which is I (specifically me, not the speaker) am always right. Naturally a flawed logic, except it isn't because it says it isn't (while also saying it is, which is true by the second law).

I should've known better before starting this at 1 am.

@ArdaXi uhm. no... more like: if X == 1 then 1 == X

@alexanderpas That's just saying if true then true

@ArdaXi same time as for me.

I developed the whole thing when I realized that there are (frequent) periods of time when I make absolutely no sense. This was the method of making it make sense, and it does well at that.

11:15 PM
We're talking in English, not a programming language.

The "==" symbol is a relational operator.

in this case, whenever I say = assume I mean 'equals'
If X equals 1, then 1 equals X.

{| align="right" class="infobox bordered" style="width: 330px; text-align: left; font-size: 95%;" |  Disambiguation note |- | *The "" symbol is a relational operator. *The ":=" symbol is used for definitions and assignments (in Pascal-like programming languages). *The "=" and "=" symbols can denote a double hyphen. |} The equality sign, equals sign, or "=" is a mathematical symbol used to indicate equality. It was invented in 1557 by Welshman Robert Recorde. The equals sign is placed between the things stated to be exactly the same, as in an equation. It is the Unicode and ASCII char...

May I remind you that English is not a Pascal-like programming language?

Whoa, nice break there
We also use just "=" in our logic courses, and in fundamentals of mathematics

11:18 PM

Alex, believe me, one equals sign will suffice for the purposes of conversation.

A relational operator is a construct in Computer Science specifically.

@ArdaXi I now, I was just having some fun.
@GraceNote YOU WIN!

I said the same thing by remarking that English is not a programming language...

I'll transfer the victory to @Arda

11:21 PM

I've got more than enough high scores under my belt.
I also already have that coupon.

That's okay, I do not feel the need for gratification at this time.

Hi @Mana (this type of greeting works always)

Works to accomplish what?

greeting without specifying weither it is morning or evening.

11:26 PM
I enjoy "Eve". I also say "Aftoon", though

How do you call the part in between Eve and Aftoon?

I don't remember where I came up with the idea to shorten it like that, but it was sometime during college.

Prevening!

@Arda Aftoon rides into Eve.

The opposite part

11:27 PM
That? Morn, usually.

@GraceNote Post-Eve but Pre-Aftoon
Ah, right

Noon is too short a time to exist

Noon is only one specific moment, it is not a duration.

So as far as I care Morn slides into Aftoon

and how would you call the last missing part?

11:28 PM
But I also figured that Daytime only lasts 10 hours, while Nighttime lasts 14 hours.
Eve glides into Morn, so no missing part.

Depends on how you look at it I guess

Daytime is when the 10s digit of the hour is 1. Nighttime is when it is 0 or 2. That's my going theory.

so 0900 is Eve?
My Morn starts at 0500

I'm probably not awake enough by then, aye
Well, no, it's still Morn
Just still Nighttime

Ah.. my Daytime starts at 0500 as well
Well... not technically.. only during summer I guess
Daytime is the duration of time between Sunrise and Sunset.

11:30 PM
I figure the Day doesn't truly start until around 10:00. Then real activity lasts all the way till 19:59, that's when things slow down and it becomes a horrible night to have a curse.

My day usually starts somewhere after noon because I hate mornings
I wish more places were open here at night :(

I guess convention differs from person to person.

Morn: 0700-1100; Aftnoon : 1200-1700; Eve: 1800-2200; Night 2300-0600

There are of course those who have like 1 hour of sleep each night spread out over naps of 20 minutes

I have a friend who did that for a while @ArdaXi

11:33 PM
Eve covers Night, @Alex
It's not really something you can do for a while, sadly
It breaks you up completely

Yeah, he had to stop because his body couldn't take it

Depends on your abilities, really

nobody can just slide into having 20 minutes of sleep every so often
rather than one chunk

I've read there that there are people who can manage that through training

I managed one day when I was abruptly awoken after 30 minutes of sleep, and it ended up being sufficient

11:34 PM
I have a book on it

I have no desire to become one of those people

It's called Hypersleep

Yeah, that's the name, I couldn't think of it

although there is also a schedule of someone having one corenap of 3 hours and two naps of 20 minutes

11:35 PM
unfortunately due to school I couldn't manage it, otherwise I definitely would

That sounds like my roommate from college

I think it's an interesting experiment

Except I'm not really sure sleep occurred every day or not.

If it doesn't you're dead for a week

It's difficult for me to wake up. If I don't set an alarm, I can easily sleep 12+ hours a day.

11:36 PM
On that schedule, missing one nap is like not sleeping for a day

|group4= Benignphenomena |list4 = Dream Exploding head syndrome False awakening Hypnagogia Hypnic jerk Lucid dream Nightmare Nocturnal emission Nocturnal penile tumescence Sleep paralysis Somnolence |group5= Relatedtopics |list5 = Bed (Bunk bed, Four poster bed, Futon, Daybed, Hammock, Mattress, Sleeping bag) Bed bug Bedding Bedroom Bedtime Bedtime toy Bedtime story Caffeine nap Chronotype Dream journal Hypnopompic state LullabyMethods of falling asleep Microsleep Nap Nightwear Polyphasic sleep Polysomnography Power nap Second wind Siesta Sleep and creativity Sleep and learning Sleep ...

But it definitely was common for an exchange in the morning of "Good morning!" ; "Good night!"

Missing an entire day will be like not sleeping for a week
I sleep about 6 hours every night. As long as the duration remains stable I'm completely alert the entire day.

Though sometimes I also go through stints of sleeping 12 hours, being awake 30-36, then sleeping another 12 or something

Regardless of whether that's 2 am to 8 am (on breaks) or 11 pm to 5 am (on schooldays)

11:37 PM
You need to get up at 5am for school? Oy

There were actually two individuals. My roommate basically exchanged sleep for food, while the other exchanged food for sleep. The latter subsisted an entire week on a single bar of chocolate.

Q: How do you orient a girder in Worms Reloaded?

StrixVariaIn older worms games it was possible to rotate and resize the girder before placing it, but I can't seem to figure out how to do it in the new game. Is this still possible? If so, how? I looked through the default controls and there didn't seem to be any mention of the girder.

@FallenAngelEyes I don't have to. I just do.

@FallenAngelEyes I know the 12-30 cycle a bit too well...

If I go to sleep at 7pm and sleep 12 hours to wake at 7am, it's still difficult for me to feel awake. I just don't function well in the morning.

11:39 PM
My sleep schedule is generally <time of bed> until 5:00.

I don't like seeing sunrise unless I've been up the night before. Always been a night person.
I just feel more awake, can concentrate more, can get more done.

Time varies from 10 hours to 4 hours, but I feel the same rest either way. On average I sleep 9 hours I expect.

@FallenAngelEyes total agreement from this side.

I can't operate at night time very well. I do much better by sleeping and waking up

I don't like going to sleep before midnight because I feel like I'm wasting the night.
That's been exacerbated by moving to the NL

11:40 PM
@ArdaXi just like my improvements to the anyhub script, that was a night project.

@FallenAngelEyes That's why I don't like to stay in bed after 9 am
The entire day, the feeling haunts me that it is earlier than it really is, and that annoys me

Agreed. @Arda. Hate a wasted morning

It actually sticks with me the entire day. I think it's 4 pm, and it's actually 8 pm

Yeah, I imagine that'd suck
like having the feeling of "Ah it's Friday... wait, it's Wednesday :("

Especially on Weekends. I have to go to work early in the morning, so I have to sleep early. So missing out on any morning basically means my weekend is cut short by half.

11:42 PM
Yeah, I try to keep my sleep schedule in check on the weekends for that reason @Grace
otherwise I don't get to spend a lot of time with my boyfriend

Always a good thing
Being able to spend time, that is

the mere reason I keep my sleep schedule in check on the weekends is because otherwise I cannot get up at 5 during the week

spending time toghether with the ones you love is always a good thing.

But yeah, late nights for me have only gotten later by moving here, as my only way to talk with/spend time with my friends and family back in the US is by staying up late

True, when you've got a distance issue it does make things much more difficult

11:45 PM
I found that being on a normal circadian rhythm makes it so I practically can never talk to my friends in California. :(
9 hours difference is just enough so that if I wake in the morning, they are heading to bed or already sleeping, and by the time they get up, go to school/work and get back, I'd be heading to bed.
So while I still can, I don't mind keeping my sleep schedule messed up if it means I can spend time with the people I care about.
Once I can go to university here, that'll likely change, but I can't yet, so

Can't?

time for the related xkcd:

You need to have a Dutch language proficiency diploma in order to attend university here if you moved here

I have the first level one, which fulfilled the requirement I needed to do for residency stuff
But if you want to go to university, you need the second level diploma
Which I'll be taking at the end of September

11:48 PM
@alexanderpas I wonder if anyone has escalated that to the level they did geohashing

(and hopefully passing crosses fingers)

Ooh, I see
Good luck, then!

Thank you!

Succes :-)

I moved here in the middle of undergrad, but because of the difference in American and Dutch university systems, none of my credit stuff can really transfer here because I hadn't specifically started on my diploma yet.
en bedankt :)

11:50 PM
What's your degree gonna be on?

I... am not sure in all honesty. That's what I was trying to figure out while still in undergrad back in the US. I'm currently thinking about going to Leiden University for Linguistics.

Do you know what your passion is?

Too much. :) And I've got an internal conflict with that whole "Do what makes you happy or do what you can make a career out of" thing. I'm afraid there won't be much crossover.

It's a question that's been on my mind a lot lately.

11:53 PM
What would you say are the skills you actually enjoy using?

@alexanderpas: ...that is very intriguing and I'm bookmarking to read that tomorrow, thanks

If game design interests you, I recommend concentrating on what you enjoy most about it and getting a major in that, than getting a generic Gaming degree.
Every game design recruiter I've talked to across the world has made it clear that any related degree, especially Computer Science, is far more valuable than a Gaming one.

Funny, I had the same conversation with Ivo here a week ago

I'm assuming it's funny because the opposite conclusion was drawn?

I am very passionate about gaming, but I'm not sure about getting a degree in it. I'm worried about my ability to succeed in the field. I love linguistics and the little details about the building blocks of language. I have good communication and people skills, as well as management skills, but I don't know if I'd be happy being in a management position all the time (though I do find it rewarding).

11:57 PM
Not really, just the coincidence

it didn't even reach a conclusion then

@Fallen Only get a degree in gaming if that's what you really want to do. It's very limiting otherwise.

I don't have a lot of skill or experience in CompSci. :( I don't know how to code or anything. :/
Yeah, I know :/

Do you enjoy writing, mostly, or linguistics in itself?
A friend of mine was a linguistics major, he now works an enjoyable job as a translator, though apparently he loved his temp job as a barrista just as well.

11:59 PM
Both. I like reading and learning about the rules of language, phonemes, stuff like that. I also enjoy creative writing. And yeah, I've very seriously thought about doing some sort of translation/interpretation job.
