12:00 AM
Anyway, I don't want to clog chat here about my inability to choose a major, haha.

I find it an interesting conversation topic, actually, but if you'd like to cease I don't mind.
But since I brought up barristas...
5

I have an issue with perfectionism and high standards for myself, so the fact that I'm totally sucking at figuring out what I want to do weighs on me. :( I'm already 26 and I feel like I'm running out of time if I want to choose something.
And that is awesome.

@GraceNote can't... look... away... from... image...

Yay! I don't feel old anymore!
(Sorry if that makes you feel old...)

I love art, like painting and drawing, but I don't know if it's something I'd want to make money off of.
lol thanks :P

12:03 AM
Now I feel so young :(

I'm 24 :D

I'm 15 :(

I have a degree in and enjoy art, but I really don't do it often enough so I haven't practiced well enough
Turning 23 soon.

I'm just starting to get back into it again after not doing it for years. There's a community center here that holds painting/drawing sessions every week that I found earlier this year, and it's really nice.
It's mostly filled with old people, because that's usually the main audience of these places, but it's great to just have 2.5 hours to myself without distractions to do some oil painting or something.

That's very good to have

12:04 AM
I've never gone to school officially for art at all, but I wish I had.

yeah, "old people" hehe...

I simply haven't had the time, and for 2 years I was crippled by thinking I lost my main art book

If we had a larger flat, I'd do more, but our place is quite small, so I can't leave art supplies laying about everywhere.
(@alex: Klein buurthuis met subsidie enz.)

In reality, I managed to pack it into a drawer that is impossible to open. Which I had convinced myself that it could never be in there, because the drawer is impossible to open. So I spent 2 years not doing any physical art.

@FallenAngelEyes (ik ken ze...)

12:06 AM
@GraceNote You wouldn't know until you open it, in the meantime it's both there and not there.

Schroedinger's artbook.

Schrödinger :)

Complete with all the stylistic guides you need for most conceivable fancy dresses.

@ArdaXi !

Oy, I don't even write my own name with an umlaut.

12:08 AM
@GraceNote I do..

Well, mine can be written without an umlaut by just adding an 'e' after the vowel

Otherwise you'd be "ah-reen"

@GraceNote I see. Mine cannot.

@ArdaXi except when registering a domain ;)

Well, yours is Dutch, aye?
Mine's German.

12:09 AM
@GraceNote Aye.
@alexanderpas My latest domain acquisition uses my diaeresis-less pseudonym

I'm half German, half Taiwanese. Complete 50-50 split. none of that 1/8 Irish, 1/16 Iroquois mix that most people I know seem to have to deal with.

I'm (as far as I know, as I don't completely know) all Korean

As far as I know I'm 100% Dutch.

Why is every linguistics person I know Korean!?

I was born in Korea, raised in the US, and now I live in the Netherlands
I'm not culturally Korean at all though, I'm culturally American
I was adopted when I was 3.5 months old, so no memories of there

12:11 AM
Born and raised in the US. We go to Taiwan frequently, but my father's side (the German half) moved to the US so we're more German in name and heritage than culture.

I'm dutch, but there are some german traces.

Counting to 8 is about the full extent of my German knowledge, but I rarely get past 5.

My friend I'm currently studying Dutch with is German

Well, that and a smattering of weapons and magical incantations, but...

She also moved here for a Dutch boyfriend
Hehe

12:13 AM
Intrigue
That's actually a pattern in my language acquisition.

So I've learned more about German culture from her

I first learned Chinese by asking how to say basic elements and weapon classes.

Which kind of Chinese?

Mandarin, Traditional

If you know chinese vely well, you can make a lot of money being a tlanslatol

12:14 AM
Japanese I picked up by spending a weekend to permanently learn all Katakana because I wanted to know what ミスリル was. (Mithril, Famicom, Final Fantasy III)

Hehe
I can still read all hiragana/katakana, but I've forgotten most of the kanji I learned in college :(

I wish i had the ability to learn language that way...

The Taiwanese I know is mostly conversational
But the characters are the same as Traditional Chinese anyway.

In between high school and college, I took 6 years of Spanish, 7 years of French, 2 semesters of Japanese, and am currently learning Dutch. Spanish and French I did mostly at the same time.

Same with Ke Jia (a specific dialect used by the one of the original tribes)

12:17 AM
I'm also weirdly obsessed with constructed languages.
Like Tolkien's, Esperanto, even D'ni, the language from the Myst games

I took somewhere between 2 and 5 years of Spanish in high school. I technically took a semester of Japanese, but it wasn't entirely insightful because it was primarily learning hiragana/katakana (which I already knew)

@FallenAngelEyes go do linguistics!

I just think conlangs are so awesome.

@FallenAngelEyes I once learnt a bit of Esperanto

They always seem awesome.
I can't remember if Hymmnos is just a singing verse or if there is a full language behind it.

12:19 AM
I've unfortunately lost of a lot of my French and Spanish through disuse. I can still read a lot, but my speaking ability has gone way down. :(

I learned that I hadn't really lost my Spanish despite disuse, as I held a conversation with my good friend (who is native to Spain), and I was able to read several comics that were in Spanish recently.
The real issue was actually in classes. My Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese knowledge have a circular system of destruction.

How so?

I spoke Chinese in my Spanish class, Spanish in my Japanese class, and Japanese while meaning to speak Chinese.

The lattermost was actually helpful, because I was with a bunch of friends (while in Taiwan), one of whom actually knew Japanese, and I didn't know how to say "Wednesday" in Chinese anyway.

12:21 AM
Japanese while meaning to speak Chinese, i can understand... the other two on the other hand... spanish is a whole different language family.

@alex It helps that all 3 have consistent forms of pronunciation for their letters, and for the most part they also use all the same vowel sounds.
Mandarin "I" is "wo" (third sound), while Spanish "I" is "yo". The entire sentence degenerates once you start on the wrong foot.

hehe

@Fallen Do you know much about that phenomenon where two people who are bilingual with the same languages will actually speak in both languages rather than stick to one?

My main issue right now is that I learn languages better in a structured environment/manner. I never took "official" Dutch classes or anything, I just sort of dove in, so stuff like basic grammar rules I ended up learning backwards. First usage, then the "why" of it.
I don't know much about it, but I've experienced it with my boyfriend's family.

12:24 AM
@GraceNote Strangely, I've seen that happen but I've only done it intentionally

Mmm. I see it a lot with my mom and many of her friends in the US, they all speak US English and Chinese AND Taiwanese. It is impossible for me to understand them after a point due to all the rapid switching.

They switch interchangeably between Dutch and English (the one set of grandparents moved to Canada for 20 years then moved back) so they just mix it up sometimes. It's suprisingly easy to follow.

@Arda Interesting
@Fallen Also interesting that you follow it well, but you probably know Dutch better than I know either of those languages.

Sadly, there are a lot of things I can express in English but not in Dutch.

They'll speak to me in a mix of Dutch and English sometimes and I'll reply only in Dutch because I need to practice it, then they'll respond in just English or whatnot.
Right now, I choose whichever language that it's easier to express my meaning in
Or that's shorter to say out of laziness :P

12:27 AM
@Fallen Actually, when I go to Taiwan that's similar to how I speak with my cousins. They're trying to learn English, I'm trying to learn Chinese, so we try forbid ourselves from using our native languages.

It's a good way to practice, if occasionally confusing :D

@Arda My friend in Spain seems to be a lot more comfortable with English than in Spanish.

@GraceNote I actually had it with a friend of mine, both dutch, and both internet english, we switched between languages, because the other language was easier to express a certain nuance, and kept talking in that language until we switched again. (we both have bi-langual toughts too.)

I'm trying to think of something easier expressed in Dutch than English

Argh, everyone here is bilingual and I'm no-lingual...

12:28 AM
"gezellig" is always the stereotypical example

@FallenAngelEyes What about apartheid?
@GraceNote How can one be no-lingual?

Apartheid is Dutch?

I'm more familiar with the nuances of apartheid in English though, actually

Well.. it's a South-African concept, but Afrikaans is a Dutch-derived language, and apartheid is a valid Dutch word.

@Arda Pay close attention to my conversation skills and it'll come clear that I fail horribly at my own native language. Especially in speaking, I will often use entirely incorrect words when I'm not inventing a word on the spot.

12:30 AM
Some of my Dutch friends think Afrikaans is a very elegant language

@GraceNote So far you seem to master the English language quite well...

@Arda I write well.

I could hardly know how well you master it vocally seeing as this is a text-only chatroom.

Writing is a secret (shameful?) passion of mine.

@FallenAngelEyes Flemish is also funny

12:31 AM
Sometimes I end up unable to remember the English definition of a Dutch word, which is always amusing

@alexanderpas Flemish is mostly a much more elegant form of Dutch.

Come from a family of high tech math-sci folk and never liked English and Literature courses in early education. Went to a tech college, took advanced mathematics and science courses...

I've heard that as well. I haven't had any real exposure to Afrikaans or Flemish though.
Never be ashamed of writing!

Afrikaans is kind of.. pidgin Dutch I guess

@ArdaXi really? Hefschroefvliegtuig vs. helicoper?

12:32 AM
But despite ALL of these inclinations, the only standardized test I got a perfect 800 on was Writing, and I did better in my several Writing courses in college than in my science courses.

...Hefschroefvliegtuig? Really?

@alexanderpas Seeing as the latter isn't really dutch.

How do you say "artillery tank" in Dutch? Better yet, "vernier"?

@Grace SAT?

@Fallen SAT 2, aye.

12:34 AM
Hate the SAT. Though I am rather diametrically opposed to standardized testing of any form, but that's an entire other rant.

@FallenAngelEyes Hefschoefvliegtuig is one of the best known examples of Flemish

@GraceNote Pretty much the same I guess, but I wouldn't even know what a vernier is in English

@Fallen Standardized tests are rather uf in the long run.
@Arda Verniers are stability rocket systems used in things like space craft

@GraceNote ah, now we see...

12:35 AM
Uf is actually Spanish... I kinda picked it up, though.

What's it mean?

Any of general disgust, misfortune, disapproval, or just plain... uf.

Aaah gotcha.

bad!

@GraceNote You've created an infinite loop
throws StackOverflowException

12:38 AM
@ArdaXi actually, it's also recursive.

I don't have any normal pictures of verniers...

@alexanderpas Either way it caused an unhandled exception.

A vernier thruster is a thruster used on a spacecraft for attitude control. It is a smaller thrust motor than main attitude control motors and is used for fine adjustments to the attitude or velocity of a spacecraft. A vernier rocket is a smaller rocket engine used for attitude control in conjunction with a larger spacecraft propulsion engine. Vernier thrusters are used when spacecraft control requirements, such as maneuvering during docking with other spacecraft, dictate a wide range of different thrust levels for attitude or velocity control. Main attitude control thrusters are used fo...

I was actually going to look for an image of the normal R-9D2 Morning Star, which uses 4 verniers for stability

@Grace fairly sure the answer is 'Vernier'

12:41 AM
@Arda Makes as sense as any.

we dutch like to import modern words.
and the words we still make are mostly silly.

It's amusing if you think about it. There are so many languages across the whole world, but I don't know of any single language that isn't borrowing stock from other languages.

Goeiemoggel!

@Alex that's just horrible

Finnish is fun. Pyorremyrskyr.

12:43 AM
@GraceNote Hm.. ancient Greek maybe?

Hm. Whenever someone pastes a picture or a link with a display, it considers my chat to be "scrolled up"-ish,

@Arda Well, I suppose Latin probably didn't borrow anything either. Or Ancient Sumerian.
@Fallen I noticed that on my end, too

@GraceNote Latin borrowed from Ancient Greek no?

So then I end up missing the subsequent conversation unless I scroll down

@Arda I thought Latin preceded Greek.

12:44 AM
@GraceNote The Romans stole most of their culture from the Greeks
Especially in the late period

I thought the Romans spoke... Roman.

That would be Latin

I thought it was a predecessor to Italian. But I don't really know my linguistic history very well, I suppose

@GraceNote Where do you think Rome is? :)

12:46 AM
Hence the predecessor statement

Okay, meant to go to bed an hour and a half ago, need to pass out

Latin is a predecessor to many languages

Thanks for the interesting conversation all :)

G'nite, @Fallen~

Rome (; , ; ) is the capital of Italy and the country's largest and most populated municipality (central area), with over 2.7 million residents in . While the population of the urban area was estimated by Eurostat to have been 3.46 million in 2004, the metropolitan area of Rome was estimated by OECD to have had a population of 3.7 million no later than 2006. The city of Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, on the Tiber river within the Lazio region of Italy. Rome's history spans over two and a half thousand years. It was the capital city of the Roman ...

Good night

That is such a sad looking article. (; . ; )

I'm all "Need sleep... but... language nerdery... compelling me..."
haha

Ancient Rome was a civilization that grew out of a small agricultural community founded on the Italian Peninsula as early as the 10th century BC. Located along the Mediterranean Sea, it became one of the largest empires in the ancient world. In its centuries of existence, Roman civilization shifted from a monarchy to an oligarchic republic to an increasingly autocratic empire. It came to dominate South-Western Europe, South-Eastern Europe/Balkans and the Mediterranean region through conquest and assimilation. Plagued by internal instability and attacked by various migrating peoples, the ...

Q: How did the cap economy make it to the east coast?

Does looting unpaid bags cost in Nethack?

I don't know, you can ask it on the site :P

It felt like a too simple question <.<
asking

cost what actually?
not that I even know Nethack
and there aren't too simple questions

I fumbled my way to a shop
There's a bag in there
it costs 5,335 zorkmids
(!!!!!!)
I'm tempted to open the bag so I can know what's inside
but I don't have 5,335 zorkmids to begin with and if the shopkeeper asks me to pay for use/damage/whatever it's game over.

but it will cost you 5,335 zorkmids!!!
game over? what weird game is that :P
I really suggest asking it ;-)
What happens if I loot an unpaid bag in Nethack?

A game where the shopkeeper will happily kill you if you don't play nice :P
