Q: What is this "answer your own question" jazz?

Shog9I showed up here to write a perfectly normal rant about misaligned pixels, and there's a big fat checkbox cluttering up the "Ask" page: WHAT THE EEEEK IS THIS NEW ABOMINATION?

Anonymous
This is awesome.

Now if it would only let me post 16 different answers at once...
@animuson Was it an old Community-bumped question, or?
@Timjadarnel27 You're right, you should have stayed up until 2:00 am playing Diablo, like I did..

@TimStone: meta.stackoverflow.com/posts/132870/revisions - I added an extra tag to it to make it re-order them. No idea why they were out of order to begin with o.o
It saved it as removing discussion and adding discussion which was weird

Hmm

12:21 AM
Is it possible that the meta tagging system lets it pass with a synonym as a required tag, then retags it as [discussion] and leaves it at the end of the tags?
wild guess

Strangely, that was my wild guess too.
That'd mean that it'd have to do the ordering before the synonym lookup though, which seems odd.

Unfortunately the sandbox isn't helpful for this one xP
It doesn't have enough sand

@animuson I tried anyway, doesn't seem to have worked.

12:50 AM
Is this an answer? I mean, he cites where he got it from, but the entire answer is just a copy-paste from that source.

@animuson It answers the question. Therefore, it is an answer.
It's not straight-up plagiarism, as he cites his source.
It might be a copyright violation, but I wouldn't bother it unless the author complained.

1:22 AM
Ooooooh 423 flags? goes to add more to the queue

Anonymous
@animuson and then he bountied it to farm rep from his copied answer.

1:38 AM
I'd attack that.

Poor Jeff

Anonymous
Did you just vote to delete that? >_>

Anonymous
I'm hoping it'll get to 60 days. :P

Isn't it 90 days?

Anonymous
Apparently not. I thought so too, but double-checked in the middle of writing that sentence.

1:53 AM
Why do you care? You wouldn't keep your reputation from it. Your question is only score of 1.

Anonymous
I always forget that part.

Anonymous
I think it's entertaining enough while still being vaguely-legitimate that it's worth keeping.

Anonymous
In cases like this I'd appreciate having it.
I preferred it having a score of 0, though. That seemed appropriate.

Happy?

Anonymous
Happier, thanks.

Happiest, thanks!

@All: hi , why my answer was deleted by Bill the Lizard

Q: Are answers that just contain links elsewhere really "good answers"?

romandasI have often wondered at the practice on SO, SF, and the other sites where someone will ask a question and an answer will come in that says Look here: http://link elsewhere. Rarely will the link have exactly the answer necessary--often it's an entire article--yet these answers get voted up. Why ...

Anonymous
People are increasingly strict about answers that are just links, without any content themselves. Somebody probably flagged it.

I'm getting a deleted question per day. Big negative thingies in my rep history. Gain 200 rep, loose 100. Every day. :( How will I reach 10k see-invisible-stuff powers at this rate?

7:41 AM
@SankarGanesh Give this a read: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/94022/…
Note that you can still edit your deleted answer. Add a summary of the information, and then flag for moderator attention and request undeletion.

That is a nice information, Thanks :)

Hello @Shog9, are you there ?
Looks like something happened wrong here it is not showing current question list,

Q: Old question in newest questions tab

juergen dThis is a duplicate to it-shows-old-question-in-newest-tab (which was closed). It happened yesterday for me too the same time as it did for the poster of that question. After a few minutes it was working again. Now it happens again. In newest quesions tab, questions from yesterday are displayed...

welcome @Lix :)

Lix
good morning guys :P
just poping in to say hi

Okey, @Lix and BTW, i bit you by 3 Rep on SO now :P
at the moment :)
Not sure about the future

Lix
oh - thats no problem... two downvotes and thats fixed ;)

Oye....... No..... :P. It looks like someone did false voting on me to suspend my account :(

Lix
what do you mean suspend?

9:16 AM
Account Suspension , by flagging for false votting

Lix
someone flagged your posts and you got suspended?

yes, about a Month ago

Lix
oh wow - what did you do? :P

ha ha. I dont know much i did some research for that person and found that he was asking his group of friend to flag my answers
:P

Lix
oh - that sounds nasty :/

9:21 AM
@Lucifer How come you know about the issue, how you researched? I also want to do on my Acoount suspension..

Lix
oh any BTW - @luc - get working on SO again... I'm ahead now ;)

ok bye @Lix

Lix
;) hehehe

well just search for Transcript & Comments @FasteKerinns, you might get luck

9:35 AM
hey there's an "answer your own question" box on the ask question page on meta now!

Lix
oh no!
Comes to mind....
well... not really... but its like posting in a blog...

I think someone mentioned it as something they were working on recently

Lix
I don't really like it...
Its asking people to go on rants - more or less...
answering and asking their own questions... I wonder how rep works for it...

hmm I managed to dispute my own flag this morning
4
although that was actually the correct thing to happen

Lix
I'm going to try to post a question answer pair...

9:43 AM
It's an interesting idea - more likely to get people to work out how to do something and then once then know the answer post it as a question with your answer immediately after. I'd personally call that rep-whoring if that was done on a large scale.

20
A: What is this "answer your own question" jazz?

Shog9Since Stack Overflow began, spontaneously sharing what you've learned by posting a question and immediately answering it has been allowed and even encouraged: if you have a question that you already know the answer to if you’d like to document it in public so others (including yourself) ...

@Lix You don't get +15/+2 acceptance rep. You can award yourself a bounty(to prevent someone else from getting the autobounty), but the bounty rep goes down a black hole

Lix
well.. I guess its an issue of wait and see...

@tombull89 Are you going to call people who keep posting answers rep-whoring?

10:13 AM
Is it fair/appropriate to warn users that they're likely to get banned from asking questions if they don't improve them?

10:30 AM
@TimYiJiang No. I meant asking questions and posting answers immediately after.
Lots of very minor questions.

Anonymous
10:46 AM
@animuson It has been deleted and eternally preserved with a perfect score of 0. Your he lp was appreciated.

11:24 AM
@tombull89 Look, it really is very simple - if the problem is minor and of no use to anyone, there won't be upvotes, and thus no rep. Conversely, if there are upvotes, then the question and answer is helpful, which is why there are upvotes.
The system does not, and should not discriminate based on who's asking the question and who's answering.

12:17 PM
@TimStone Haha, that sounds like the opposite of what I should have done =) I was already 20 minutes late (which is a full 5 minutes after I usually get to work).

I've been much later before, no worries. :P

I went to bed at 9:00pm last night, and I didn't play D3 at all.
(In preparation for not sleeping at all this weekend and playing it constantly)

I've still not purchased SC2 yet, I might get D3 once I've bought and completed that :)

12:33 PM
@awoodland Slacker =P I can't believe they have still only released the Terran campaign.

wtf D3 is £52 retail boxed ($82 at today's exchange rates!)

Jesus Christ. I think mine was $60 (USD), max.

@Timjadarnel27 Never assume maliciousness with something that can easily be attributed to sheer stupidity
2

@Timjadarnel27 if it is trolling it's bloody awful trolling. There's far better ways to troll a site like this :)
For a start it needs more regex HTML parsing

Very true, very true =)

12:41 PM
Hmm it's got a re-open vote though
I'd love to know who

Ha, that is ridiculous.

Does the question ban script run periodically? The "I'm banned so I'll ask here" questions definitely seem to come in waves

Someone was just asking that yesterday in here.
yesterday, by Bart
Hey guys, just curious, but are question-bans handed out in batches? Would anyone happen to know that? I'm just surprised by the apparent grouping of question-ban related junk on MSO from time to time. (And yes, I AM procrastinating)...
@awoodland So it's not just you that's noticed that trend =)
> We have one male albino hedgehog left for sale $125 local pickup only
You can have a hedgehog as a pet?!?!?

1:05 PM
I only got as far as "albino hedgehog"

I bet every pet hedgehog since the 90's has been named "Sonic" (and possibly dyed blue).

1:31 PM
weird my VLQ flag on that question you mentioned earlier got declined

That is weird. I would definitely call that question salvageable.

@Timjadarnel27 I would have said unsalvageable - even if the formatting/grammar/spelling was fixed it's OT and subjective (and not very clear what a perfect answer would be)

@awoodland Precisely.

ah you missed an "un" then :)

Hahaha. Yes, my bad. I meant unsalvageable. Chrome apparently doesn't think that's a word.

1:41 PM
FF thought it wasn't too which slightly surprised me

I right-clicked on the word, and blindly picked the top correction (which was, in fact, "salvageable"). Whoops =)

tempted to utter the words that will make every moderator smile unicorns: "probably a mis-click, doesn't really matter anyway"

1 hour later…
2:53 PM
@TimManishEarth Actually don't think you can do that anymore either. Was a bit of a dirty trick.
@Lucifer Check the tab you're on. I just watched a new question posted.

I blame that Marc Gravell guy.

Ok
@Shog9 you mean this one meta.stackoverflow.com/q/132958/173001 ?
or about the noon problem

Morning.

Night :P
Very Good Morning to you :)

Aftereleven!

3:07 PM
for me it is night , 20:37
@Shog9 which tab you are talking about ? MSE or SO ?

@Lucifer click the little arrow to the left of the message

yes, I did, and it return back me to the message i sent you in this noon
it is working fine at this time, but it was problem in noon for about 5-7 mins,

@Lucifer Did you read the answer that was eventually posted on the question you linked to?

you can see a question regarding this on MSE meta.stackoverflow.com/q/132929/173001
other user said that yesterday at same time , it happened
@Timjadarnel27 yes, now I am reading it

Grood. I mean good. And great. Great and good.

3:13 PM
@Lucifer I saw that too
and commented on the earlier post linking to it in the chat transcript

yes, i read it now , so it was a problem of switching to new system
it is like parallel implementation of the system

I wondered if it had fallen over to some other DB in a cluster that was out of sync somehow

3:31 PM
Just answered a question on Apple.se Haven't done that in a while.

I only signed up there to flag cross-site spam

I have one question
I have profile on many of SO sites , like ServerFault, SuperUser etc
if i go to SuperUser and delete my profile, will it delete only Superuser Profile or it will delete my main SO profile ?
@all

@Lucifer I'm not sure how deletion works at all

ok @awoodland
I just want to delete my profile from other sites and let it remain on SO and MSE site only

@Lucifer You have a separate profile on each site, so you can delete them individually. If you can't delete them yourself, there's always meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/5999/can-i-delete-my-account. (But no need to email us once per account if you have a lot of them. Just describe what you want in one email. :))

3:45 PM
ok, thank you Anna :)
I have deleted 3-4 accounts, but still it is showing on my main account SO, so will it take time to refresh list there ?

@Lucifer probably.
I don't recall what happens, to be honest, but caching is almost always a reasonable answer. :)

hmmm ok fine

4:11 PM
@AnnaLear There is no delete profile link on Area 51 site

@Lucifer You can email us about that one then.
Most account deletions can't be done by users themselves anyway.

okey, will write an email, is it necessary to use same login email ?
i mean my login email

4:29 PM
it can't hurt. but what we really need is for you to edit profiles as described in the meta post and send us a link to your account (or user id or whatever) so we can find you.

ok fine

4:48 PM
ok friends, time for leave now :). Bye...

Do CW posts continue to notify the original post owner?

Community Wonka?

That doesn't sound quite right.

I don't know.

5:04 PM
You know, perhaps it sounded too right.

@Timjadarnel27 Notify how?

@AnnaLear I mean, does the original poster continue to get inbox notifications when someone comments, or posts a new answer, etc (as though they still owned the post) after the post is made community wiki?

@Timjadarnel27 oh yeah
I think

@AnnaLear Alright. I was thinking that this comment was inaccurate. So the person that posted the Formatting Sandbox question on here still gets notified of every new answer?
(and every new comment on the actual question)

5:24 PM
---
Unrelated to the above, does anyone in here use Pinterest?

@TimJadarnel Naw, was never pinterested in these fads.
2

@Moshe I see what you did there =)

I was disappointed when I found out pinterest wasn't about beer.
5

@Timjadarnel27 Hmm. actually, I'm not sure now that I think about it.

how on earth is facebook possibly worth that much money?

5:40 PM
Someone "pinned" my brother's and my iTunes album page, and I was trying to determine how that could be used to promote it. I guess telling our fans* to re-pin it?
* assuming we have fans one of these days =)
@AnnaLear Time for science, I suppose.

@awoodland They have a lot of unicorns. Unlike Stack Exchange, they don't flaunt it...but you know they're there.

6:39 PM
hey someone complained about one of my edit reviews on meta - I'm famous!

@timJ, cc @annaL: comments on CW posts always notify the original owner. Answers on CW posts, I have no evidence but I would think that they notify as well no matter how many answers are posted
Most probably Olafur became inactive because he posted the formatting sandbox
Haven't seen casperOne lately either. (SO tag cleanup, 2012) . Both of them muatve been driven away by the multicolllider
@timj you can always ask casperOne in a comment if he is notified by answers on the tag cleanup

@TimManishEarth Not a bad idea, I'm on it.
@TimManishEarth I deleted that comment you replied to, to keep your post all neat and tidy =)

Won't has provided such a very useful source link for the first image in his profile.

Indeed. Think that's a permalink to a mod message?

Anonymous
@Timjadarnel27 Yup, that's what it is.

Anonymous
I guess it's important for other moderators to know where he got the image macro from. :P

@JeremyBanks Haha. I don't think anything about that image could possibly be important =)

Anonymous
Hmm... now that I actually imagine if user sending that to him in response to a moderator message... that would be pretty hilarious. Other mods might appreciate the humour.

7:42 PM
That would be pretty funny.
@TimStone I'm supposed to be bugging you about features. Features!!!

I consider Sunday the end of the week.

I consider Sunday to be the end of the weekend =)

Yeah, but my Stack Exchange "work" week is skewed on account of my actual job. :P

@Timjadarnel27 Weren't you supposed to feature him about bugs? Now you chat about weekends, sheesh!

@TimStone I suppose that since you're the one doing the work, I shall abide by your naming convention.

7:48 PM
Admittedly I'm a bit behind because of D3.
But I will get those features done, if it's the last thing I do!
Otherwise you'll have to guess at what the teaser screenshot was.

@DanielFischer I went a little cross-eyed when I read your first sentence there.

@TimStone My brother beat act 3 last night.
I have not even beaten the part I already played during beta haha

I'm somewhere in Act 2

@JeremyBanks Will did the image himself (he's in famous in the mod room for his meme pics), but the text did come directly from a user.

7:57 PM
@TimStone I'm wondering how much I can really extrapolate from the bottom of "jon.doe", a blue "nt", and a dotted line.
studies teaser pic some more

can someone hit improve on: stackoverflow.com/suggested-edits/267005 - I totally missed the tag in the view I saw it on first.

@awoodland Done.

I ate more Dipsey Doodles this week than the the number of lines of code I wrote. #finals

Err, maybe that's a bad edit, actually. Either that or I misunderstood and just screwed up the post.

Ugh, I hate KVM's.

Anonymous
8:04 PM
I'm going to roll that back. It changes the meaning of the post and from my 90 seconds of research about Android, it doesn't look like the un-improved edit makes sense.

@JeremyBanks Ok, my reaction was purely to the: "why would you put 'in' there, that makes no sense" part

Anonymous
Sure; that display was a bit misleading.

@Timjadarnel27 Plenty!

@Timjadarnel27 Kernel-based virtual machines, K virtual machines or keyboard/video/mouse switches?

@PopularDemand that was a really unfortunate choice of acronym for the Linux project early in its life

8:13 PM
@PopularDemand Ha, that last one. Those things always make me feel dumb.
It turns out this one was actually dead, so I don't feel so bad about not being able to figure out how to work it =)

I hate that the shortcuts are always slightly different on them between models, but just similar enough that I can never remember what the right one for this model is.
(we still have a few of the radio button style physical ones kicking around though)

@awoodland This one actually has buttons like that, but I started second guessing myself when they didn't work.

It took me a very long time to twig that "radio button" in a UI is an exact metaphor

8:31 PM
Whoa, Jeff really kicked up his blogging output after he left SE.

@awoodland Heh, that reminds me of one of Scott Hanselman's recent blogs

@TimStone The one that went viral because it copied redditt or stackoverflow or something about being a moron!

Yeah, the only reason I saw it was because it was linked from...somewhere...that I can't remember. But it happened.

@TimStone That is awesome.
"Scissors for cut: since that's the tool I used last time I wanted to clip something out of the newspaper to show my friends ;)"
^from the comments on the blog.

What symbol would be better than scissors?

8:46 PM
@PopularDemand [Ctrl+C]

How about the Windows 7 "Snipping Tool" icon?
Wait...damn it.

@mootinator You seem to be missing the point of communicating with symbols. Also, you used the wrong letter.

Aren't we communicating with symbols right now? Equals-sign close-paren

@PopularDemand How about a picture of a guy sitting in a folding chair holding a megaphone with an exclamation point above his head?
CUT!
@PopularDemand C for CUT I was, uh, going for symbolism not accuracy.

I'm just waiting for these buttons to be sponsored. Can you imagine a pizza wheel icon in Microsoft Word 2020? "Our new and improved cut feature, brought to you by Papa John's!"
2

8:50 PM
@PopularDemand Hahaha. That is great.

This, but stylized.

Copy, brought to you by the pirate bay.

@mootinator You've been anti-hotlinked.

More of that metaphor :P

I hate you, 476.

8:54 PM
Woo Main Line woo!

@TimStone the thing is I took radios apart as a kid and my first car had a radio with klunky buttons like that but I still didn't associate them for ages
and I never found a way to make the UI controls do that thing where you carefully press two at once

I just want to drive home, why aren't you green?!
Hah.

@JeremyBanks Are you sure you aren't being intranetted, both of those looked fine on my end.

@mootinator All I saw was a BazaarDesigns logo, too.

Samesies.

8:55 PM
Weirdness.

I wonder if they recognized your IP as one that had just "legitimately" requested the image, or if your browser just showed you its cached version.

@TimStone :o

SO MUCH RED! shakes fist

Perhaps traffic is so bad because the King of Prussia is visiting the top part of that map?

@PopularDemand Cache, I'd guess.

8:57 PM
Seems like a big deal.

Is "King of Prussia" a city or something?

Hahah

And the site of one of the largest malls ever.

Indeed.
I've always been curious how someone thought that sounded appropriate for the name of a town.

I was at the largest mall ever once.

8:58 PM
But everything in PA is fairly obscurely named, so.

I quite like the Welsh words on that map too

"Where are you from?"
"I'm from Lord of the Dance, Maryland"
"...what?"

"a local petition in 1786 identified it as the 'King of Prussia.' It was possibly renamed in honor of Benjamin Franklin's pro-American satirical essay An Edict by the King of Prussia. At some point a wooden signboard of the inn [at the center of town] depicted King Frederick II (Frederick the Great) of Prussia" -Wikipedia

("Bryn Mawr" is Welsh for "big hill")

I don't think big malls should be allowed to count amusement parks as part of their floorspace, it should all be RETAIL baby.

9:00 PM
I wonder if anyone keeps track of the current pretender to the Prussian throne.

@mootinator I thought that's what all the big malls did these days?

@PopularDemand I'm not doing anything next year. Anyone else up for a little revolutioning?

I call Portugal. Dibs.

Apparently, you'd have to ask Georg Friedrich.

tempted to change my account name to "The last King of Prussia" or something similar

9:01 PM
@mmyers Do we get to run hipsters through with our swords?

The average speed is 15 mph at the moment, fantastic.

@mootinator Only the first one. The rest will demand increasingly obscure methods of execution.
2

@mmyers I like hipsters better when they're underground.

the solution clearly is to telecommute home
4

@TimStone You know, in the time you spent complaining about about traffic here in The Tavern, you probably could have gotten all the way out of the parking lot.

9:03 PM
@mootinator Do you know why all the hipster dinosaurs are now fossils? They were into lava before it was cool.
10

@awoodland Hah. I used to work from home every day...now it's only two days a week.
@PopularDemand Traffic...frustrates me. If I leave now or in an hour and a half, I'll get home about the same time.

We should all be more like mmyers. Quality, not quantity, people! I guess that's why he gets the blue name.

@mmyers "I was into endothermic reactions before they were cool"

@TimStone I hear that. Although when I was in that area I had the luxury of a completely-on-local-roads commute. When I was near DC, a 1.4-mile commute could take over half an hour.

476 to 95 for me. There's no winning there, until I make it to 495.

9:06 PM
@PopularDemand The secret is to be too lazy to bother posting most of the time.

Yeah...I couldn't do that. It's too hard to get away from people who are driving terribly when everything's bumper to bumper. Which concerns me, because I don't want their bumper to be bumping my bumper.

@TimStone I thought bumpers were made for bumping bumpers in bumper-to-bumper... blah, my lips are numb and I wasn't even reading it out loud

Hmm, I might make 20k on Meta this month, hooray. Then just another year of necro-repping on Stack Overflow and I could reach 10k there.
@mmyers You may be having a stroke. Might want to get that checked out.

@TimStone When nobody's moving, there's no need to get away from terrible drivers.

My commute is a fairly predictable 30 minutes once I reach this:

9:10 PM
Looks pretty Canadian to me.
@PopularDemand Somehow people think they can move even when no one's moving.
Hmm, apparently I shut off my laptop. I...don't remember doing that

9:38 PM
(The above is a comment to a programming question someone asked on Meta SO.)

That is my new go-to comment

Drat, what?

10:51 PM
I was going to accuse mmyers of something but then he ran off.

And? Accusing people of things only gets easier when they're not around to defend themselves!

Just that someone with that particular moniker should have no issues with morbidity.
Just sayin.

Is that a reference to something?

@PopularDemand I can only assume that M stands for Michael ;)
Yes, that's a reference to something.

Heh. Forums.
