8:00 PM
I'm thinking about starting a petition to have M4 officially declared as an esoteric language.

@TimPost I have a copy of Practical Common Lisp, and I keep meaning to read through it. :-P
@TimPost And what practical difference does that make? ;-)

My first exposure to LISP was emacs, and that scarred me for life.
(waits for the flags to roll in)

@TimPost Emacs Lisp is very archaic by Lisp standards. Don't use that to form an opinion of other Lisp languages. ;-)

I was going through steel bank and it was very interesting

@TimPost SBCL is one of the best implementations of CL, in my opinion, yes.

8:02 PM
My first real experience with Scheme was some attempts at hacking the roadsend PHP compiler, which didn't go very well

@TimPost My first experience with Scheme was using Guile, which was...interesting. I think Guile 2.0 will be really awesome, though.

I also really want to start playing with mono .. with the same copious amounts of free time that you mentioned

Hehehehehe.

I envy the webapps people sometimes. Systems programming is a thankless task for the most part.
Like this chat. Fun, people can ooh and aah, very rewarding. Who cares who wrote the driver for the Ethernet card that lets you get to it?

@TimPost Hehe, I don't envy frontend webapp development at all. I <3 backend stuff.

8:07 PM
@drachenstern re PDF, yeah, for perfect multi-line templating there has to be a reflow inside the document, and for that to happen, there needs to be a text processing application that can do it.... I could live with one-line placeholders though. However, they couldn't be in a fixed position because the document comes from the user

@TimPost My project has a backend team and a frontend GUI team; I work on the former. You should see how ecstatic customers get over the simplest GUI thing, and then their eyes glaze over when the backend does some ridiculously complicated thing that took us 8 months to implement

I really like making control panel type stuff, I might spend some serious time on getting some better open source hosting automation on the market

@MichaelMrozek I work in the Performance team at work. And I'll tell you this, people do notice it.

It is rare that you come across a performance improvement that people actually notice though. Some exceptions might be web server projects.

@Pekka!!!!!

8:09 PM
Just keep making the performance slightly worse until they beg for your help

I missed him again!!!
LOL

@TheRenamedException where is him?
changing jobs?

@MichaelMrozek You might be onto something there

There's a story on the daily WTF somewhere about a project that was trying to lower their memory usage and squeezing every last byte they could, and then the project manager took out a secret line of code he'd added ages ago that just allocated a random block of memory and never used it, which he'd been saving for exactly that purpose, so it was like they'd suddenly made a huge breakthrough

I understand why people do that kind of stuff, it just doesn't feel right to me
I'll put ducks in projects, no problem. I know my boss and I know what I don't want to see ripped out
But I can't bring myself to allocate even one byte more of heap than I know I'll use. Especially since a lot of my stuff runs RT and uses memlock()

8:15 PM
Hi again! :)

user153011
Yeah, we've finally got the StackExchange™ MultiCollider SuperDropdown™ in chat room list!

I think that's been there a while now, but I lose track of new features. It feels like we've had suggested edits for months

@MichaelMrozek Inefficient, he should've just reduced it by 20%!

I need to loop over something three times, and I need to know if it's the first pass or not. I accomplished that with:
for(boolean firstPass : new boolean[] {true, false, false})
Someday someone will find this code, and hurt me

@MichaelMrozek I see you're converting from Boolean™ (True, False, FileNotFound) to Poor Man's Boolean

8:22 PM
Man I hate debugging when linking against stripped, proprietary libraries. The only symbol I can see is the big fat middle finger it's giving me.
2

@Pekka this is why I don't think you're going to find anything. My advice is to go with that TeX option from before, or figure out some way to use PS as source files instead of PDF

@TimPost They removed the symbols because that's obviously bloat!
You don't want bloated stuff now would you?

Oh noz! My librariez haz bloats?

Symbols like we_like_making_tim_post_suffer are dead giveaways

@MichaelMrozek I thought that was the loop speed decrementing one, where they had random +10000000 loops

8:24 PM
@drachenstern I don't think I've seen that one
This was a video game company, iirc. I'm not positive it was the daily WTF

Argh! AND it leaks.

@MichaelMrozek ah, that would be different. I'm pretty sure I've read all the TDWTF (which says something about my freetime during my collegiate days) and I've not seen that story that I recall
ok, 19 updates means -> reboot

@TimPost "ducks"?

@PopularDemand "Where?"

@TimPost Your post. Mouseover my message, or click the "left turn arrow."

@TimPost libpq (the Postgres library) leaks memory too, which is really inconvenient when you use dmalloc to track memory leaks. We had to add a hack into our test infrastructure to say "btw, I'm using Postgres here, so there's going to be a memory leak"

Just don't use malloc! Problem solved.

Tell that to the Postgres developers

I'm going to have to ld preload and use the boehm GC. That is a travesty

8:27 PM
@MichaelMrozek If you weren't using malloc you wouldn't need dmalloc!

There are parts of glibc that 'leak once' , which irritates me, but nothing compared to code I could fix if given the opportunity.
I asked a question about using rad hard boards on SO a few years back. There's still a lot of circumstances that preclude the use of dynamic allocation

Q: Changing the display of the apps tab

Kevin MontroseWe're looking at changing the front page of Stack Apps to look more like a proper app "marketplace" and less like a run of the mill Stack Exchange site. Proposal This would replace The theory is that votes, answers, and views are completely useless. A picture is really needed, and most tag...

One of the things I like the most about Xen, I'm constantly writing code that has to behave well on something that has as little as 512 MB of RAM. The privileged domain is a very sensitive place.
I can't just go saying "Oh well, I'll just allocate a 10 MB pool and give slices of that with my own alloc routines"

8:46 PM
That's it, I'm re-writing this library. Stupid broken junk

Ugh, what a long day..and I haven't really even done anything. sigh

@TimStone This whole week has been working extremely long days, staying extremely busy and getting absolutely nothing finished.

@drachenstern yeah, I may have to go that route.

Hmm, if I can scrape up a few boxes for distcc, I could cut the build time down. Most of my time has been watching stuff compile

@TheRenamedException Hi @Josh!

8:52 PM
@Pekka Hey there!

@TimPost That sounds rather unpleasant too, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm in the middle of a mild self-doubt-induced anxiety attack, hooray! I also seem to have quite a headache.

Sorry, distracted by the digest for AU.

You're still doing that?

@Pekka I wanted to thank you for the 500 unicorn dollars you sent me ;-)

@TheRenamedException no problem. :)

> users with less than 125 reputation can only post answers every 3 minutes; try again later.

Oh, that's inconvenient

@TimStone I'm having one of those too. I've thrown out 5 versions of something I have to have completed in a very short amount of time

Get more reputation

@MichaelMrozek But it's Ask Ubuntu, does he really want to do that?

@MichaelMrozek You do realize I have boycotted AU specifically to spend more time on Unix.SE right? ;-)

8:54 PM
@TheRenamedException - Got my email?
Has anyone ever tried coding in OmmWriter?

I suggested 3 edits today; I'm practically rolling in AU rep

AU? I'm lost

@MichaelMrozek all 6 of them?

@Pekka AskUbuntu.com

@Pekka Ask Ubuntu

8:55 PM
Ahh I see

refuses to remove ^^^

@TimPost Ah, I'm not alone then. Somehow that's not comforting though. :P I have a little more time for my problem, but I'm afraid it's not going to be good enough, which would cause...serious issues.

@Moshe sorry have been busy. I do see it, have not read it yet

@TheRenamedException It's just an updated business card. I would like an opinion please.

@TimStone Problems I hate the most are those with circumstances that cause you to avoid resources that could really help. I can't ask about mine on SO, for instance, yet it would be an awesome question.

8:57 PM
Wow, just installed this on my iMac. Incredible! (And I thought it was awesome on my MacBook, heh.)

@TimPost I'm in a similar position, though I feel like it's more something on the side of laughable than it is a good question, heh.

So not only am I relatively stuck, I'm also on my own.

I put myself through the typical tests .. "Am I solving the correct problem?", etc .. and yeah, I'm just stuck

It's like I've got this big freaking hamburger and can't figure out where to even take the first bite.

Heheh, that must be rather frustrating. I have it "figured out", but I'm afraid it's one of those things that is fundamentally flawed, even though it looks reasonable at a glance.

I figured mine out a few times too, and then completely trashed it as the scaling requirements are just crazy
It's a bin packing problem on crack
Compound that with everyone I've talked to today, including myself (I do that often) has the flu.

One of my coworkers is sick too, we ended up moving the meeting that was originally at 10 this morning (and then rescheduled to 2:30) to tomorrow as a result. I'm debating why I even got out of bed today

I have to hit N (o log n) complexity no matter what.
Of course when it was initially proposed to me I had an "idea" and said "SURE! EASY!"
meh.

Heh, sounds familiar. :/ shakes fist at problems

9:09 PM
@TimStone If it gets too bad, we'll "throw mama at the problem" -- "Criss Cross" you solve mine, I'll solve your's. It's always easier to clean up someone else's mess.

Hahah, I really should just hire someone to take care of this particular area for me, since I'm certainly no expert..but unfortunately I'm not sure that's practical at the moment.

I ran mine in meta terms past a few experts I know, I got blank stares and condolences.
The most irritating part is here I sit, with thousands of programmers much better than me ready and willing to help, yet I can't tap that resource. Perhaps I am solving the wrong problem.

@TimPost You can't ask SO in the same meta terms you used with the experts you know?

user153011
good night :)

yay, useless intermediaries calling me ... nothing like wasting 20 minutes on the phone for someone to read me a pdf I already have :\
@TimPost if you can give the body of the problem, I bet we can solve it.
@TimPost I wonder if I do too, I've got congestion and my side of my face around my eye feels bruised under the skin :(

9:21 PM
I'm working on reducing it to 'meta' terms without being ambiguous, which is kind of difficult.

@Moshe sorry, work stuff came up, I am delayed. I will respond later

is the problem that it's too intertwined with the specifics of the business, and you're trying not to hit NDAs?

@drachenstern I don't think I have the flu, but I sure have something. I've been blaming my allergies.

@GeorgeMarian that's what I normally blame

@GeorgeMarian IllegalArgumentException (Here, we only blame balpha, Rebecca Chernoff, Michael Mrozek or occasionally Yi Jiang.)

9:23 PM
Why can't I just get paid to move the turtle in LOGO?

@PopularDemand lol

@TimPost Because some jerk asked a question about that on the Internet and now everyone knows how to do it, forever.

@PopularDemand s/Rebecca Chernoff//

@PopularDemand You are BRILLIANT! LOGO++ IS THE ANSWER!
I am so sorry if that gets starred out of context.

@TimPost I'm... happy to have... helped?
@RebeccaChernoff No deal, that would leave two commas next to each other... but you're welcome to drop Marc's name in there instead of yours.

9:29 PM
@PopularDemand We'll have as many commas next to each other as we darn well please, , , , kthx.

oh lovely, my music has been playing the past half hour with me not getting to listen to it :\

I've discovered that most of the "low quality" posts on /review are short, which is why they ended up flagged low quality in the first place. Comically, this means if they do have errors (and they generally do), there probably aren't enough to get past the character limit for suggesting edits, so that page is like a big list of broken posts I can't fix

@MichaelMrozek Well, adding the link improves the question amirite?

You know what I could never really get? when should I down-vote and when should I vote to close, or when both. (Not in the obvious cases)
I constantly see bad posts, obvious closes, down-voted, why "waste" rep?

Q: 2011 Moderator Election - Town Hall Chat Digest

JoshThe following is a "digest" version of the 2011 Moderator Election Town Hall Chat . The format, as described on Meta Stack Overflow, is one answer to this question for every question asked in the Town Hall, containing all the candidate's answers to that question. To view the digest chronological...

@Trufa See, you don't have reputation! You have disagreement points!!

Pulling all election primary data from the election monitor page now

A: Elections nominations posts not showing up in API

Kevin MontroseThey were never intended to appear, and this bug fix incidentally removed them from the API.

@YiJiang Told ya :)

Odd, not sure why
The API data is correct, so it must be a bug on my end

@Trufa because people like you see it as "wasting rep"
do you goto the grocery store and "waste dollars" on groceries?
do you drive your car and "waste gas and maintenance" "just driving somewhere"?

10:19 PM
I just got Mortarboard in AskUbuntu's Meta...
This confuses me...
How can I hit the rep cap on a site... with no rep...?
:-)

Q: Keyboard Shortcut for formatting on Mac should be changed

MosheThe keyboard shortcuts for bold and italics on SO et al is incorrectly implemented on Mac, IMHO. On Mac, we use the ⌘ key to invoke keyboard shortcuts. However, on SO, I have to remember to use control. Can we get the ⌘ for keyboard shortcuts implemented please?

Someone should write a script that pulls your rep from /reputation and shows it on the SE metas instead of your main site rep. Fight the power

@TheRenamedException You still earn rep - but you can't see it. Check your envelope on meta

@MichaelMrozek I see you haven't run /reputation on a per site meta in a while.
> Reputation on this per-site meta is derived entirely from the main site; nothing to show.

@Moshe I can't bear to downvote you again... :-)
But I do not agree
@ChrisF Yeah, I saw. I know why I earned it, it just feels odd :-)
(It was for the Town Hall Digest)

10:26 PM
@drachenstern sorry had to go AFK!
@drachenstern I did not mean it that sense
I get what you say

Just making sure
most people seem to forget that this is an economy based on votes, not a game

@drachenstern I agree
I downvote
but not when I think it should be closed
I see it as different things

@Trufa I don't downvote when it should be closed, I just closevote
and then come here and whine to other people to close it as well ;)

@drachenstern thats the way the cookie crumbles
@drachenstern can you describe in few words when you vote
?

@Trufa I vote when I think that the questioner doesn't try to answer, when the answerer shows a blatant disregard or ignorance of the subject matter, or when the answerer shows contempt or rudeness. I also either comment or upvote a previously left "-1 I downvoted because..." comment.

10:33 PM
@drachenstern ok, very nicely put!! that is exactly my point
I don't like how people vote sometimes, and since this is a tavern I will wine and cry and drink

Q: Should I really have been awarded mortarboard on AskUbuntu's meta site?

The Renamed ExceptionThe Ask Ubuntu Town hall digest caused me to win the Mortarboard badge, yey! But wait. [Mortarboard] Hit the daily reputation cap for the first time Per-site metas don't have any reputation... I am confused :-) I know why I got the badge. Should I have?

Feel free to disagree!

@TheRenamedException Hmm, intersting.

Badges are independent, that's always been the case.
You can get Fanatic on each, etc.

@RebeccaChernoff Of course, but hitting the "rep cap" on a site without rep might seem a bit silly. :P
Clearly it's there whether or not you can see it, but.

Right. (:

10:45 PM
I'm out. Cya later.

@RebeccaChernoff Right. I know why I got it.
It's just illogical

Ohhh, one up vote away :o

Also, it confused the hell out of Marcus on the Ubuntu chat, LOL

@TheRenamedException I actually find that most websites support ⌘ vis-a-vis the browser itself, as opposed to built in editors.

@Moshe I know of no websites that support the command key
@TimStone from what?

10:47 PM
Bronze [.htaccess]

@TimStone try again

> I concur. You should not have
@drachenstern you just were too lazy to upvote huh? ;-)

@TheRenamedException I'm not sure what an upvote means in that case, so I abstained

@drachenstern Ah. I am kidding of course :-)

:D waits for the counter to update

10:49 PM
I am positive this question is going to add another
status-bydesign
to my collection

@TheRenamedException I'm not that worried about if you get upvotes on MSO :p

@drachenstern neither am I
I worked my ass off to get over 1k on meta. That was all I wanted
It makes me a very sad person that I have more rep on Meta than any other site

lmao, I'm at 1230 and PROUD of it ;)

(No offense to the others here who share this feat :-)

I am so close to breaking this record holding level on dba.SE as well :D
My next goal is to pay attention to the English.SE site for a couple weeks and get my lit on with a score of 1k over there too ... yeah right

10:52 PM
@TheRenamedException I opted to try and bolster my SO reps on account of my massive meta gain the last week or two, heh :P
(Well, massive for me)

we'll see. My 600+ is purely accidental, I'm sure I'll break 1k there by the middle of summer
@TimStone yeah, I noticed you doing that, wanna tip me a hefty bonus for one of my trivial answers? ;)

Hahah

I'm actually kinda surprised I got this:
13
A: Does the CC-Wiki license allow the licensor to withdraw their content at will?

drachenstern provided, however that any such election will not serve to withdraw this License Is the key phrase. They can change the license for any future distribution, but any distribution made prior to such a change is considered to be released under this license. So in other words, once you post it ...

+13??? ZOMG WOWz
I also am not pleased that I was inb4 Tim and he still got moar pointz than me

@drachenstern It's funny because the day we posted that, we actually were #4 and #5 on the Meta rep league for the week.

@TimStone what? shutup
sweet

10:56 PM
And perhaps even more exciting, @TheRenamedException was #1, ahead of Jeff (but no longer, now he's number two :P)

I should probably try to give a shit about the leagues, but I can't really ... I know I'm about midaverage on collected knowledge, so I try to get by on actually doing things

@drachenstern Yeah, I recently passed my goal of being ahead of @RebeccaChernoff for the year too. :P

however, according to all the people I have associated with in the past, I'm better'n google for getting answers from
something about curated knowledge and practical application trumps pigeonrank

@drachenstern I don't either, because I know I don't even come close. I just happened to take a peek on account of getting Mortarboard, heheh.

@TimStone haha! And so soon!

10:58 PM
The leagues on MSO go back before it was created ;)

I know, the hard part now is keeping in the lead. ;)

If my wife goes to sleep before me again then I'm going to start transcribing my idea notes for my site that I want to create ... somebody remind me that about 8:30(cst) if I'm on

It was created on the 27th June 2009, but you can go right back to 2008

@TimStone of her on MSO? I give you a solid lead through the end of June ;)
hello hiccups my old friend

@ChrisF Ah, back to the dark ages.
@drachenstern I'll have to start bribing balpha to "break" client side things I can diagnose.

11:02 PM
drachenstern #2811 year rank -1031 change 3,676 total reputation
I am going to accept that #2811 is not too shabby

Why (I don't hear you ask)? Well it's because Jeff took a copy of the SO tables and dumped the questions and answers to create MSO. It's why my SO and MSO account IDs are the same.

@ChrisF no kidding

Ah right, you people from the Beforetime with your cross-site-same-IDs ;)

@drachenstern Straight up

So if I read the tables right on the leagues page there are ...
37401 actually active users on the site
which puts me in the top 7.5% of active users of the site

11:05 PM
@TheRenamedException I can only conclude from your testing that Safari sucks. I actually wish I had a Mac handy (and not just a Mac keyboard), since it'd be nice if the userscript worked with either key...Tyler said it didn't, but.

actually active being defined as 201+ rep

@drachenstern For SO?

@TimStone Indeed

I...might need to work on my position, hahah.
#13358, -12345 from last year. :P

Got to go

11:07 PM
That's assuming that the ranks on the right are not inclusive of the higher ranks

Have a good evening @ChrisF

@TimStone Well it's 11pm now - so "night" would be more appropriate ;)

Yeah, I thought about that after the fact but figured it was too late at that point ;)

And using the data on dba.SE (a site I know well) to cross reference, that is indeed the case
Tim, if you're at 13358 then that means you're like in the top 25% of the users roughly

I really slacked off though, I was on a pace to hit around 15K by the end of my first year. Now, not so much. Damn work and its making me busy. :(

11:09 PM
@TimStone I know right? I just want to get hired to stay on SO all day
but then I'll constantly hit the repcap and the editcap and whatever other caps they give so :\

I want to have the confidence to answer questions on a regular basis, heh.

@TimStone I imagine in your mind you also append "accurately" somewhere to the middle of that sentence?

Right, right. I don't trust myself enough to put answers out there for most things. mod_rewrite I get away with a bit on account of having spent so much time in the source code, but for most other things I shy away.
Even Java stuff, which is what I do on a daily basis.
I don't mind being shown that I'm wrong, but between the personal embarrassment and potential to mislead the OP, eh...self-confidence issues FTW. ;)

@TimStone you were what now???
Sorry, damn boss asking me question again, eating into my chat time!

@TheRenamedException You were #1 on MSO's rep league for the week the other day when I hit the rep cap.
Followed by Jeff, then Pollyanna, then me, then @drachenstern

11:21 PM

A: Memory exhausted error for json_parse with PHP

JoshTHIS IS A VERY BAD IDEA, that said, you'll need to set ini_set('memory_limit',filesize($FILE) + SOME_OVERHEAD_AMOUNT); because you're reading the entire thing into memory. You may very well have to set the memory limit to two times the size of the file since you also want to JSON_DECODE NOTE ...

@drachenstern Good answer

@TheRenamedException well I wasn't sure if I sounded like I was undercutting him somehow. I mean, obviously it's day one, and he needs to get immersed quickly in our site, but given the earlier conversations on meta I figured I should check to see if I'm "making someone cringe" :\

Error 1: Projects and Solutions: Unable to import property 'ProjectsLocation' because it contains invalid data 'F:\Development'.
Error 2: #200: Unable to import property 'TabSize' because it contains invalid data '4'.
Error 3: #200: Unable to import property 'AutoListMembers' because it contains invalid data 'true'.
Error 4: #200: Unable to import property 'IndentStyle' because it contains invalid data '1'.
Error 5: #200: Unable to import property 'HideAdvancedMembers' because it contains invalid data 'true'.
It's funny, you export a file from VS2010, you imagine you could IMPORT it with no problem :\
