Good answer, but I'd suggest that you make your answers only as good as the quality of the question. In this case the quality is poor, so a simple wolfram link would've done the trick. — Zach466920 2 mins ago

Guyses I'm looking for something I can link to in the meta about limits in question titles.
Is there one?
It's not in the rate-limit guide.
(I know it's 15 chars<title<150 chars)
Just a link would be halpful.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M It’s UTF-16 code units, actually.
Rather than bytes or code points or extended grapheme clusters.

5:40 PM
@TCh I wanna write a back at ELL because the bad question titles are really annoying me.
"How to write a good title"

Bad titles are a bane everywhere. This is hardly a matter unique to ELL.

@tchrist But it's infuriating on ELL.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I like @NormalHuman's response to that idiocy.

Like, 90% of the questions have bad titles.

The Furies visit many a site.
Look to ELU today, for example.

Here’s a list of 250 bad titles for demos:

Q: Request for aggregate data regarding deleted questions with subjects containing CORRECT, GRAMMA, or RIGHT

tchristThis support request will require the assistance of a Stack Exchange employee, probably a kindly Community Manager. As shown at the bottom of this answer, I present some SEDE results on just how many non-deleted questions’ titles contain any of “correct”, “gramma”, or “right”. I used queries lik...

@S.L.Barth Whenever it need be written in standard English, which that was not.

@TCh ELL to ELU is like an ant to an elephant. Of course bad titles must flood you, but if they're flooding us we'll be in bigger troubles when we get to your size.

Just edit them. You cannot get somebody who URGENTALLY NEEDS HELP NOW THIS FIRST TIME THEM POST to read a bunch of documentation.

And next they'll go on to Stack Overflow to "improve grammer" on other people's posts... :-S

Thing is, many avid askers write crappy titles.

5:46 PM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Show me.

NEW STUFF

But, fluency is not a requirement on ELL, is it?

[ SmokeDetector ] Bad keyword in body: How would I save textfield for a specific date? by coding22 on stackoverflow.com

@Undo cool!

@S.L.Barth It isn't, but
@tchrist OK, it's totally not as crappy as "HALP THXBAI" titles, but we have ell.stackexchange.com/search?q=is+this+grammatically+correct

5:48 PM
@S.L.Barth Fluency is a requirement on no SE site.

@tchrist That's the point I wanted to make. ELL, ELU - we can't require people to be fluent, it would be unreasonable.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That is a good demonstration that we need one or another of a title ban or a title popup on those.
I would very much favor that, and it should be the same on both sites. I haven't worked up the stamina for a meta post proposing specifics, though.

@S.L.Barth It doesn't take much fluency to write a unique title.

This is something that would require community buy-in.

If they can't do that, they probably shouldn't be asking what they're gonna ask.

5:51 PM
But there is clear evidence supporting it, so I do not think it would be too hard to achieve.

Sad There's also the thing that a lot of askers don't abide by the less serious rules 'cause they don't care.
Like, there's the consensus that "requests from native speakers" is question fluff at best, and should be removed.
Yet we see them occasionally, and from avid askers.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That one is surprising frequent. But it wouldn't be a title popup or block. It could go in a FAQ or help-center message.

Right. Well, those require other meta posts, but I think we should at least have something to link to in ELL's meta about good titles.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Which one, don't be a vampire?

So avid askers are not necessarily good askers... why does that remind me of Stack Overflow...

5:55 PM
Vampires stalk your site.
Some of them even have badges for it.

K, back to my first question, is there something I can link to about title length limits?

Why would you need to? The site enforces this automatically.

@tchrist Yeah, "nice-vampire", "good-vampire", and "great-vampire".

You don't have to tell people they need more then three letters in their title.
@S.L.Barth But we very much can, and should, edit their titles into something sensible.
Searches both internal and external.

@tchrist And not just the titles, I imagine.

5:58 PM
Oh, and I forgot to mention, because of a losing battle, most editors on ELL don't edit titles anymore.

I know I am in a minority about editing. It astounded me how many of the ELL moderator candidates think that it is fine to leave poor English lying around on a site whose mission is to help people with poor English. I cannot understand this.

An influx of bad askers, a robo-reviewer problem, a robo-editor problem... or a combination of all three?

Robo-reviewers used to be, they're no more, I think.

What are they robo-reviewing in this instance?

We have a highly upvoted meta.ELL post for that. That's why.

6:01 PM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I'd like to see that. Do you have a link for me?

@tchrist Not sure if you've seen this.
@S.L. ^

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Thanks, I'm going to read it!

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That bothers me even more that it’s a spammed tag wiki suggestion that was insanely approved. Maybe ELL needs the 5k level not the 1.5k level for that. :(
Not that there is any shortage of 5k users approving bad things.
But it does raise the bar some.

This should be made into a review audit... and if you fail it, immediate moderator attention.
I don't want to insta-ban, it's always possible that someone misclicks. But 2 or 3 approvals of spam edits, and a mod warning + ban is in order.

Then there's the thing that ELL has voting and editing problems . . . I'll skip.

6:08 PM
It's distressing to see that the robo-reviewer problem isn't limited to Stack Overflow.

All in all, we have a big lack of FAQ stuff. I'm not really sure why this is, but it could be because the ELL pioneers were mostly coming from ELU, and were familiar enough with SE. When other real learners of English came, they had no idea what they should be doing.

@S.L.Barth Badgers, honey: honey badgers.

As in "We don't need no stinkin' badgers" ?

Aye.
And yet, motivation.
Almost no one is motivated enough to perform above and beyond without regard to the badges.
Some are simply unduly motivated.
There is far too much drop-off once badges’ requirements are met.

It wouldn't be a problem if badge-hunters would just do their work properly.

"fp-" deletes the message in the Tavern.

Only in the Tavern?

I guess so. Smokey didn't seem to be responsive in the ELU chat.

In the room where you call the fp command. And Smokey only listens in this room, Charcoal HQ, and the SO Close Vote Reviewers room. In all other rooms where it does stuff, it just posts, but doesn't listen.

Thanks, @ProgramFOX! That makes sense.

It's OK if you don't have already; just remind me to get one next time Smokey reports.

Hi... any mods around?
Anyone?

You can ping them if it's necessary.

Hmm... doesn't look like Brad Larson's been here. I need to report spam seeding... who should I ping?

@Ani he needs to report spam. Does he need to ping you? :P

@Mogsdad Can't you just use a custom mod flag on the post?

We (many in SO Close Vote Review Room) have been flagging many... we've kicked over an anthill.

Are all the posts deleted?

None.

If you have one bullet left, then shoot the post with mod-flag, and add the links to the usernames.

Was hoping that handing off accounts to Brad would short-circuit the effort. (As per meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/300591/…)

Hm... Martijn Pieters was active 12 minutes ago, but he's not been here.

@SmokeDetector This was not a very good question, but what it really needed was a little editing. Use the "ignore" command? What do you guys think?

Ignore is when "this isn't crap, but it ain't diamond either."

Thanks! Sounds exactly like this particular post.

"fp-" is when "this is an awesome question. Leave it."
FP is better when the post is legit, but it needs to have something that Smokey is allergic to.

Ok.
Meanwhile I'm wondering why that question was upvoted. (It's at +1/-1).
