Why is there always a surge of terrible questions around this time of day?
Contrary to popular belief, this is not India's fault. It's afternoon in India now.
Hmm. Most of the areas where it's morning at the moment is covered by water!
And Europe. Maybe it's all our fault after all, and we should be banned from asking questions on SO!
I'm half-joking, but there really seems to be that notable surge every day
Unless it's that I need 3 hours of sipping coffee to really wake up, and start noticing the bad questions. That is a possible explanation as well.

Well, its a friday evening somewhere, so maybe they've started drinking early and drunkely come on SO?

That is a possible explanation too!

@Pekka no one asks during afternoon?

@Sathya true, but there's a real surge, always around 9 GMT
It can be my subjective impression, but I think not.
Maybe there is a huge concentration of really bad programmers on the Azores.
{{Geobox|Region | name = The Azores | native_name = Os Açores | other_name = | category = Autonomous Region | native_category = Região Autonoma | etymology = açor, Portuguese for species of rapier bird, erroneously identified as goshawks; also derivation from the word for blue | official_name = Região Autonoma dos Açores | motto = (English:To die as free men is better than enslavement in peace) | nickname = | image = Azoren (14).jpg | image_caption = Mount Pico and the ...

9:20 AM
@Pekka well fwiw I agree about terrible quality that is of my country folks.

@Sathya yeah, I guess it's a mix of language barrier problems, and a considerable portion of inept programmers due to the economic attractivity of an IT career... With a huge lot of notable exceptions, of course. My superior in my first job was schooled in India, and I have nothing but respect for him until this day.

@Pekka Agree. The language is a huge barrier - there are few of my colleagues who're pretty good at programming, but suck at communication

@Sathya yeah. Maybe things will work better once there are localized SOs - if there are enough active expert answerers for each so they don't drown.

@Pekka yeah.

Q: Clarify wording on badge page for post-associated badges that you can only earn once

Jeremy BanksThe heading "$name earned this badge 1 time" is used for badges associated with specific posts. To me, this suggests that the badge could be awarded multiple times, but it's used for badges that can't be. In those cases it would be clearer to just use something like "$name earned this badge".

There's one close vote here, surely that's not Lance's close vote, which would've decayed away by now?

12:02 PM
@YiJiangs独角兽 See waffle's first comment on that question
Took me several minutes to figure out what was going on myself, heh.
@YiJiangs独角兽 There's less than 100 views, so the votes on that question won't age away yet.

@TimStone Interesting. I sort of remember seeing that from a post a while back, but totally forgot about it

I think there was some other criteria too, but I forget.

Hmmm, looks like xkcd's blag finally updated to twentyten

@jcolebrand, random question, is your node KO chat code open-source?
(And if so, where can I see it?)

Hmm, not sure I'm a big fan of the current order of the starred messages.
I need a different hobby. - 21h ago by mootinator
like keeping your mouth shut ;) - 2d ago by jcolebrand

Hahah, I noticed that last night too. Rather unfortunate, really.

3:50 PM
@PopularDemand yes but we haven't really started development of anything new, mostly due to we all being busy and not sitting down to organize anything. github.com/stackchat

Sometimes I just want to slap stackoverflow users.

4:07 PM
@mootinator I hear ya.
One day, there will be a kinetic social network.
Every user will have a feedback device of some sort next to their PC.
People you have friended can stroke you, poke you....
Hackers will try to find ways to slap you.

I suppose I shouldn't try to answer questions by cutting/pasting production code most of which is far more clever than what they're asking for.

@Pekka lol

@mootinator That sounds wise.
Hi @Trufa, long time no see!

@Pekka Until I unplug the USB end of the cable and it lies limp on my desk, while I bludgeon it to death. I can still poke you, only you can't slap me.

@Moshe There will be mechanisms to detect that, resulting in inability to poke or, in extreme cases, your exclusion from the network.

4:12 PM
@Pekka hi to you too! it has been some crazy weeks, with little time!

@Pekka Well, if I were the hacker in your story...

@Trufa same here!

@Pekka lots of work?

@Moshe Yeah! Of course, we on SO would have a natural inclination towards hacking the system, and slapping users who ask dumb questions.
@Trufa yeah!

Though It's amazing how much zeal there is for enabling people to do dumb things.

4:13 PM
Well that's good! right? :)

"I want to implement this feature actual people will find annoying."

@Pekka - In school, a friend of mine and I grabbed a group study room and I let him read my German book. (Which I've still been to busy to take seriously.) Here's what I drew on the board:

Ah, he accepted an answer.

Q: c#: how to show success message in client before page redirect to another page

Steven Zackwhat I want to do is when user click submit button, the backend code will add it into database, and show a success message in client before page is redirect to the next page. How to write code in backend? I use this.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock(this.GetType(), "clientScipt", "<scrip...

@Trufa well, it's all work of the "Thank God when it's over" variety, so I'm not overjoyed :) But it's okay. Job has do be done, and all that.

Translation: How can I slow down my users just to show them a message?
;P

4:15 PM

@mootinator but he has a right to know how to parse HTML with Regex!

It is called "Das Kind trinket das Bier".

@Moshe hahahaha

@Pekka I know that kind glad it's over for you know!

There was a modification I made afterward, where the kid is holding a beer in the other hand too, but I didn't take a picture.

4:16 PM
@Moshe My first words in every language

See the shirt?

@Trufa thanks! But it's going to be a few more weeks :) But not indefinitely any more.

Inspired by the I <3 NY shirts.

(Meaning that I'm spending way more time on SO than I can really afford to :)
@Moshe charming.

Danke.
"It is too late to undo this operation." - Well, that's one sentence a surgeon never wants to hear.

4:20 PM
Anyhoo, I should be fixing code, not giving it away to people who don't appreciate it.

@Moshe it is also a good idea to learn "ich liebe dich" for when you are druck :)

@mootinator ET Codez Home
@Trufa heh. (Are you right now, since you missed a letter there?) ;-)

@Moshe hehe I wish!
just the dyselxia kiking in (sic)

The thing about those groups study rooms is that they're fully visible from the outside, so that people don't get too comfortable in there. So, I like drawing that really large picture of a baby with something to the effect of "staring is rude", or "The baby is sleeping, go away". Makes it akward to look at the whiteboard.
I've also gotten librarians shaking their head at me for a "Apple FanBaby" with an iPod and a huge Apple on its shirt.
Fun fun.

I miss my mac :(

4:26 PM
@Trufa What happened to it? (Or is that the baby talking")

I sold it, I'm on linux now which is not so bad, but I'm programming a lot on c# for the university, so on windows most of the time, which sucks (not starting a flame war here!!)

@Trufa Flame war!!!

Am I allowed to post dummy answers when I delete them imediatelly?

what do you mean, "allowed"?

If I won't get punished or something

6:49 PM
no guarantees. I mean, if the quickly-deleted answer is filled with profanity and anti-semitic threats against the OP, he might wish for something more than just deletion.
of course, if by "dummy" you mean "empty", then yeah, I doubt anything interesting will happen.

7:07 PM
Native username tab completion in comments eh? Hmm, guess I'll have to remove that from the userscript...

Is it going to be rolled out quickly, or should I check for it in the userscript for the time being?

Q: Are bugtest questions okay?

Popular DemandIs it okay to ask bugtest questions on Meta Stack Overflow once in a while? @RebeccaChernoff, suggest setting while(true) { enabled = getRandom(); } for @TimStone's benefit.

it's enabled on MSO now already

Well, yes. I was asking about the other sites. :p
Also, are there any more features coming our way that are gonna steal my thunder? ;)

I have a shiny new copy of Visual Studio though, so Data Explorer meddling is now on the todo list.

7:55 PM
Yay, I have an app that solves the nine stones problem!
And, it shows the most efficient way to get to the outlying stone.

@RebeccaChernoff Hm, maybe this should be featured around the time that people are going to pour in complaining, or will it likely not make any difference?
