You should post a feature-request question on Meta, though if you're requesting a feature there's a relatively high probability someone's asked for it before, so be sure to search just in case.
I've done a quick search, but not sure... I'm looking to have a feature where as that poster of an answer I can turn off comments (that is, not allow comments on my answer)
Ah ha. Well, I can't think of a duplicate where that's already been requested, so it might not have been. I have a feeling it won't be very well received, but if you request it I guess we'll see.
I just don't see another option if discussions are not permitted in comments :( I can never respond to a negative or questioning comment for fear of it being deleted
Yeah, it's hard for me to comment on that since I didn't see what the comments were originally, and I don't know what that site's policy on comments are. Granted, discussions in comments are generally discouraged, but if they're relevant to the answer then I don't take issue with that up to a point personally.
As far as chat is concerned, you're free to make a separate room for that particular discussion, though I can see why you might not want to have to go to that kind of trouble. You can certainly make chat work for long-term conversations, but I don't think it's necessarily so convenient that it's appropriate for every case certainly.
I think that the Maths site has a tendency to attract relatively long comment threads in a manner they find acceptable, so you may want to see if you can find out if they defined their comment policy somewhere and point to that on your site's meta, I suppose in the topic you linked to earlier.

@Hogan I'm not sure what your point is. My earlier story about that restaurant was the exceptional case; I almost always contribute to what the article calls "the proportion of Groupon customers who are already their customers." If these companies want to make bad decisions, I don't mind getting some tasty food for cheap before everyone involved goes out of business.

It looks like we started getting some database timeouts starting about 4 hours ago. Both the usual suspects were asleep at this time, so it wasn't something we actively changed. My working theory is squirrels in the data-centre.
