> If Spiderman didn't have webs
> > He would just be Peter Parkour.

If mootinator didn't have jQuery
He would just be Kevon.

I think you missed the pun there, @moot.

I didn't, but I was busy facepalming.

@PopularDemand Yes I did (/facepalm)

@jcolebrand nice

9:06 PM
And I always saw Groupon as a gamble on the quality of your business. There's one local restaurant that I never would have tried if it hadn't offered a Groupon deal. But it did, and I did, and I liked it a lot and went back for several full-price meals since then.

@PopularDemand I agree. It's also the point of many retail coupons but those extreme couponers seem to get stuff they don't really need. Instead of just giving it away, it requires consumer buy in because it makes you use part of your own money

I'm vaguely aware that there are some posts online about how offering a Groupon was the worst decision people ever made, but as far as I'm concerned that's exclusively a problem for business owners.

@PopularDemand Still, this is different than a pizza place and a coffee shop... They have a spend of $5-$10. A sit down dinner is more than that.
@jcolebrand See this post @PopularDemand
Careful.. the troll just entered.

@Hogan Reminds me of Restaurant.com, forces the consumer to spend more than they normally would for the sake of a discount

@Hogan wtf?

9:13 PM
@Changeling Heh, that used to happen to me with CampusFood. I spent thousands of dollars on getting food delivered while in university, and spent more sometimes than intended just so I could use my CampusFood coupons. I imagine everyone won in that situation, except for my wallet.

@TimStone exactly

I had a campus "meal plan". For only $10 per meal I got to buy $8 worth of food at a campus food outlet.
Their advertising seemed to imply that the meal plan was for x meals per semester.
But what it really meant was that the x meals expired at the end of the semester you bought it in.

Heh, our university's food service made the mistake of allowing people to cash in their left over meal plan credit for drinks and stuff.

One normally expects to get some sort of discount for pre-purchasing things, rather than being charged extra.

My friend walked away with four palettes of Snapple.

9:21 PM
lol

@mootinator Yeah, that seems a bit fishy, hahah

@TimStone The (food services) president did give me a credit for not seeking legal advice re: the wording of the meal plan contract. Heh.

Ah ha, nice. :P
I was a little annoyed with my university actually, since whenever you were living in the dorms you were forced to buy a meal plan.

@mootinator That's a bad move on his part. While you're on campus they can charge you whatever they want, just like any other place where you're part of a captive audience.
@TimStone Mine too. I think it's to be expected, really. They also offered the "four crates of Snapple" rule one year and closed that loophole right quick the next.

@PopularDemand When I buy a magazine subscription which comes with "1 magazine per month" the subscription usually lasts for more than one month.

9:26 PM
@mootinator Well then don't buy the meal plan.

@jcolebrand It was a joke -- someone with troll in their name entered.

@Hogan ahhhh

@PopularDemand That was the following semester.

@PopularDemand That's what happened in my case too, heh. They were like "Yeah...we're not going to do that." So instead, the students just cleaned out the stores of individual bottles toward the end of the year. They eventually wised up and put a maximum item limit per purchase.

@jcolebrand (It was Pekka.)

9:29 PM
I guess I shoulda put an emoticon there just to be clear.

Meaning, I went to get the food I thought I'd paid for the following semester, and convinced the pres. I wouldn't have entered the contract had I not misunderstood the terms. And that the misunderstanding was completely reasonable.

@Hogan or just not share because someone comes in with the name of "troll"
You and @Moshe aren't brothers are you? :p

@TimStone That's still not too bad. Mine went to a "block" system where blocks had no cash value and could only be used to buy meals, where every eatery defined a meal in its own way (typically an entree and a side and a drink). But by then I was an upperclassman and had moved to an apartment and didn't care.

Yeah, that's a bit rough. I had stuff delivered even when I was on the meal plan, because the food wasn't that good.
Coincidentally we changed food service providers ever year I was there.

But still, while they have you in their no-competition economic Twilight Zone, it would be wrong for them to not screw you, from a purely financial standpoint. Of course there are other factors in the real world to consider, but money is a big motivator.
I think ultimately, most people felt like they were essentially paying for the convenience of eating on campus and/or decided they had more important things to do than grouse about the meal plan all the time.

9:34 PM
Hooray, my web framework patches have been merged! \o/

@PopularDemand The point being I could just pay $8 cash instead of $10 per "meal" on campus.

Of course this all comes with the caveat that every university has a different sytem/contract, despite the fact that they have similarities, so our experiences are non-transferrable. And now I go back to figuring out how to obfuscate my URLs.
@mootinator Ah, I didn't have that option. My school inflated the prices for people paying cash.
I initially thought that you meant that you didn't feel the food was good enough for the price you paid.

@PopularDemand And I assumed that's what my campus was doing =)

@mootinator You were paying an extra $2 to not have to take money out, obviously.

Isn't that an extra $2 to have your parents pay for it? :)

9:37 PM
Their justification was completely reasonable, it just didn't apply to my situation.
See, I only worked on campus.
Supper would run you around $13 cash.
But I was only buying lunch.

Jez
this aggressive closing down of questions is getting out of hand.

So, there was more to it...

Jez
a question about game emulation just got closed on gaming.SE as offtopic.

Anyone living on campus had no choice but to buy a full meal plan, so silly me assumed that it was safe to buy one of the smaller ones for lunches.

@Jez did it fit the FAQ?
@Jez by chance was it your question?

Jez
9:43 PM
as far as i can tell, yes

@Jez Actually your question appears to be about emulator recommendations, which I assume is off-topic under the umbrella of the [game-rec] discussion. (@badpssockpuppet Is that right?)

Shopping questions are no good
"which one should I use and why" is always a nono

Jez
it's not shopping, im not buying

in The Bridge on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 41 mins ago, by badp
I don't understand why http://gaming.stackexchange.com/q/24699/23 is "off-topic" of all things
@Jez Lack of money exchange doesn't make a shopping rec less of a shopping rec.

@Jez shopping does not imply using money as exchange mechanism

Jez
9:44 PM
ah, you noticed. oh well, that's something.

That said I changed it to not be a shopping rec

Q: How literally does SU take "not about a shopping or buying recommendation"?

Lord TorgamusI fully support the clause of the SU FAQ that states that shopping/buying recommendations are off-topic. I'm a little confused about its scope, though. Does it apply to questions that ask people to suggest free, open-source applications? That's not technically buying, but it's equivalent to a sh...

Jez
@badpssockpuppet bit silly that questions about game emus on a gaming SE are offtopic, though, eh?

It's for SU, but applies more broadly.
@Jez You could ask for a game rec and it'd be just as OT.

@Jez some users match emulator ====== illegal and close/flag regardless.

Jez
9:45 PM
mods are getting too aggressive with closing stuff down
SEN is going to get less useful. some of these questions are helpful

@Jez Now that's just unfair

The question was closed by the community, so I'm not sure what moderators have to do with it.

@Jez what mods?

Jez
well, those with voting rights

They use them as they wish.

9:46 PM
have proven they should have that privilege according to their participation in the community

You should try and get 5 more of those to use their reopen votes

And the question can be reopened if you present a good solid argument (like on the gaming meta)

My supervote can't really help here.

Jez
sigh
it just feels like people are desperate to close questions down

@Jez before you start with the "le sigh" you should understand why they did it

Jez
9:47 PM
and i used to really like the liberal attitude on stackoverflow. it didn't seem like there was unnecessary negativity
now the place is full of it

The network does not support "shopping rec" questions. That means "which one should I get" or "what is the best tool of all in the world for this problem"

@Jez -1 too nostalgic >:(

Jez
i mean basically as long as the question isn't totally terrible and waaay offtopic i think closing it is OTT

However: "What are the reasons why I should not use xyz" is valid.
And for the FOURTH time today I get ignored when having a conversation. I'm done. Someone else talk to this cat.

Jez
see, closing that question has discouraged me from using gaming.SE
i probably wont bother now.
it looks like Minecraft and Pokemon discussion.

9:48 PM
@Jez having your question closed sucks, I know, just don't think people are out to get you

If you take close voting as negativity towards you then you're Doing it Wrongâ„¢

"What product has the highest number of enumerable features on a strictly objective basis?"

Jez
not me per se, but aggressively to get any questions they smell as remotely off topic?

@mootinator Too localized

Jez
that's just bad for the site i think
the funny thing is, Jeff was saying that he'd rather see 7 good questions on skeptics.SE than 10 more average ones

9:50 PM
@Jez the problem is I think no one here has reopen votes on Gaming

Jez
the area51 beta comments that 15 a day is healthy :-)
so really we need to decide whether we want high-volume question sites or low-volume, more specific questions. it seems to be that SO did well with the former
it did very well with the former, in fact.

@badpssockpuppet Yeah, I'm waiting for Mass Effect 3 to come out, heh.

Jez
and i don't see why they're changing the philosophy.

@Jez Would you honestly classify "What are the best Genesis/MegaDrive emulators?" as a "good question"?

Jez
acceptable and ontopic, certainly.

9:51 PM
It's quite below the average to be honest

I tend to agree that there's a chilling overemphasis on new sites on "good questions"

Jez
'good question' is debatable, but that shouldn't be a requirement for not getting closed down.
that wasn't what made SO great.

The cream floats to the top.

Actually user closing and user editing, which usually are mod-only powers, are what makes SO great

Jez
there are a ton of 'average questions' on SO that arent closed down
people like it

9:52 PM
@Jez Yeah, but your question had quite a few problem; I wouldn't classify it 'average'.

Jez
it's the same thing
2 brand names

sssssh details.
Still, what do you mean "best"?
Fastest even if glitchy? Most accurate even if slow? Most reliable recording/playback? etc.
What's your use case? What are you looking for?
Do you know what you're looking for? Perhaps that's what you should ask.

Jez
that's "not a real question" material, not offtopic.

I don't understand why http://gaming.stackexchange.com/q/24699/23 is "off-topic" of all things
At any rate

Jez
well im just throwing it out there. the voting mentality is wrong. i dont know how you change it, but i doubt Jeff encouraging people to vote questions down helps.

9:56 PM
You have an answer
I hope it'll help you get the emulation done, even if you couldn't keep the question open.

Jez
yeah, thanks.

Wasn't emulation what you wanted to do in the first place?

Jez
Gens, tweaked right, is pretty nice

@jcolebrand read it today in hn

10:05 PM
@Trufa aye, ouch eh?

@jcolebrand ouch indeed!
I liked that most comments on HN were not of people being smartasses

That's always a benefit

10:21 PM
Does anybody have the link to login to a chat directly?

Does the removal indicate that you resolved the problem accurately?

@jcolebrand The removed message was just a ".

hehe no.
It was just an typo
The login system to the chat sometimes gives me trouble
it says its too old, I have loged out and reconected several times
and still no luck

@GraceNote sadly I don't have privileges for that on this server. How do you know that by chance?

@jcolebrand Photolocation.

10:29 PM
Meaning you saw it when it happened?

Pretty much.

gotcha

@GraceNote Oh, I thought it was a =

hehe
@TimStone and it was a =

I was close.

10:31 PM
You just needed to turn your memory to the side a bit.

There were two lines. Photolocation is an imprecise art.

@GraceNote > There were two lines. Photolocation is an imprecise science.

@Trufa It's an art.

I'll take your word on it

I would.

11:00 PM
Hello

Indeed

11:30 PM
thinkgeek.com/blog/2011/06/sine-yesno.html <-- take time and read this now.

@jcolebrand - Since when am I a troll?

@Moshe whoosh and you totally misread that

Indeed, I thought I did.

> or just not share because
the way we all give you a hard time for repeating things ... repeatedly

Ah, ok.
lol
