7:00 PM
Also, lunch should have been so three hours ago, but it was not. Should fix that..

My browsing history of today.

10 minutes worth, at least.

WTF happened in April, guys? Unacceptable

7:15 PM
@MichaelMrozek That's chat.SO anyway, who cares? ;)

@TimStone Oh yeah, I missed that part. You're forgiven, MSO. For now

chat.se had the same dip >_<

UNACCEPTABLE!
Oh wait, in April?

We're not chat.se either, as far as I know

I was on vacation then, that must have been it. I inspire people to talk.
@MarcGravell Why can I not search for single letters in chat search without it giving me a broken error page? I suppose I don't mind it snubbing me for the single letter search, but it could have told me off more gracefully. :P

7:21 PM
Someone noticed that earlier with *
Main site search used to crash when you did that too; that's a weird bug

nods

looking

Much appreciated.
Where's that arrow supposed to be pointing, @MichaelMrozek?

Oh, is it supposed to be read bottom to top? I guess that might work. -1 anyway.
Ah, touché.

7:25 PM
I forgot about my profile, but people don't usually go there

@MichaelMrozek there's no graph for chat.mso >_<

"Null or empty full-text predicate." sigh; codez is hard

Only because you haven't gone and put one together by hand yet.

@TimStone I got in a...disagreement with some people who felt we need to specify which site we're mods on, which I find pointless since there's a handy logo right there on the box, so I changed my profile message to be passive-agressive

debuggering it now

7:26 PM
@MarcGravell That's why I'm being lazy and not writing any at the moment...though I suppose that should change.

@TimStone I didn't make the other 2 (:

@MichaelMrozek Ah, well in that case, never mind, +1 to you.
@RebeccaChernoff I know, but I figured the other two weren't made completely by hand either, so that's OK. Off to the transcripts!

@MichaelMrozek It doesn't work if you join a per-site room you have an account on
For example, in the bridge, you'll see the arrow will point to the Gaming heart.

@badpssockpuppet I know, but it really only matters when I'm in a mod room or UL, and those are the cases where it's accurate
I should probably just blank it again like it was before

7:29 PM
@TimStone transcripts?

@badpssockpuppet I don't think that's true? I always see my parent user icon there, no matter which room I'm in.

@MichaelMrozek chat.SE saw the same dip in April
@badpssockpuppet not anymore; I recently changed that

@RebeccaChernoff Never mind, it's not funny anymore. I suspect it wasn't funny to begin with, but I'm throwing in the towel. :P

(unless you never refreshed your javascript since then, @badpssockpuppet)

13 mins ago, by Rebecca Chernoff
chat.se had the same dip >_<
(:

7:31 PM
13 mins ago, by Michael Mrozek
We're not chat.se either, as far as I know

But I speak with authority!

@TimStone funny or not, I have no clue what you're on about. (:

That's a good point

chat.meta also took a deep dive in April, and didn't recover

7:32 PM
@balpha oy

MSO is quite confusing at times

@balpha chat.SE is much more relevant to use than chat.se (Potentially not work safe, if your work filter is really anal) anyway.

That looks like...ANALYTICS DATA!

@RebeccaChernoff I was jokingly suggesting you should go count messages and make us the graph, is all. Clearly my delivery was fail. :P

7:34 PM
@MichaelMrozek that's a dev route I hacked in when Joel said "OMGOMGOMG There's a board meeting tomorrow, quick, give me something so I can prove to them that it's worth paying two guys full time to hang out in a web chat"

@TimStone I did not pick up on that at all, heh.

@balpha Yeah, I think there are several factors that influenced that. Hopefully most of them are only temporary.
@RebeccaChernoff Yeah......yeah. nods

note that the chat.meta traffic includes our private company rooms, so that data isn't really representative of anything

makes a note in ~/diabolical-plans/websites/stack-overflow

@balpha That's only because you don't have a column that counts how many times the Wheel of Blame was spun.

7:40 PM
executes rm -rf /home/mmrozek/ after having easily logged in

deleting the user directory is lame, rm -rf / is way better :p

now that would be cruel
I approve

or aliasing every possible regularly used command to rm -rf /, that way he will do it himself :p

@OctavianDamiean It's Linux, nobody cares about anything outside the homedir. I just moved computers; I got a list of every package installed on the old one, mass installed them all overnight, and rsynced my homedir to the new machine and it worked perfectly

well having backups is lame as well, who uses backups anyway? :D

7:45 PM
remind me, who's responsible for this snippet? [metaso]

My backups are always out of date; I should really do something about that

@TimStone yeah, that missed the mark ...

sync each and every folder to Ubuntu One (of course that was a joke)

So anyways, who remembers what post that bracketed bit is referenced on?

@jcolebrand What in the world are you talking about?

7:48 PM

A: Add data.SE style "magic links" to comments

balphaMost of these now work. My comment below has the following markdown source: On [main], you are expected to write proper English (as advertised on [english.se]), but here on [metaso] it's more important to have freehand circles, so please [edit] your post, otherwise I'll have to flag you (see ...

@balpha that's it ~ Thanks. Added a comment. See what you make of it

no self yet :(

It's my runner-up highest voted answer; only second to the March Rep Recalc comic
@jcolebrand scroll the comment thread up to my conversation with fretje

I'm just glad you implemented it before I added it to the userscript.

@balpha well I disagree tho.
you're already converting it on the fly. Just let it be the site - postId and not display the title
I mean, fwiw, these are shorthand syntax anyways
but like when we're in chat, and know an id, those are a lot easier to type
shall I work up the whole bit and then present it for dissection?

7:53 PM
Admittedly I'm not convinced that I know the ID if I can't equally as easily copy the link.

@TimStone bah
SHORTHAND

23 secs ago, by Tim Stone
Admittedly I'm not convinced that I know the ID if I can't equally as easily copy the link.
That.

I'd hypothesize it could be more useful for users. I do have some user ids memorized.

http://meta.stackoverflow.com/q/92060#94000 is a valid SO URL. [metaso:92060#94000] is the minified representation of that. Which is a lot less characters than the URL.

7:54 PM
How often do you link to them in comments?

wtf chat? grrr
@balpha often enough that shorthand would save characters.

it's not the point of those shorthands to save characters
it's the point to save time

he wants to cheat!

@RebeccaChernoff this.

You can now search for single-letter queries without it failing
it won't find anything, but you can search anyway

7:56 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Do you link to specific users in comments often though? Otherwise don't we already have that in the chat userscript?

ah, Marc deployed chat, hence the hickup

oh, that's why I dupe posted

agreed - any hickups: blame me

@MarcGravell Awesome. And that's reasonable, I just was surprised it crashed and burned. Why is the error page all ugly anyway?

whadya mean ugly? do you not find that cat attractive?

7:57 PM
he's right though, it's ugly

@TimStone no, exactly, I don't. And since I think it'd be more useful for users than posts, and I don't exactly see it being useful for users....well, suffice it to say I'm not overly excited about the feature request. (:

and we need our own 500 image

Yeah, I meant more the lack of a header and footer and stylesheet. :P
@RebeccaChernoff Ah, gotcha.

partly - which one (of many) would we use?
but we can probably do a bit better than that, I s'pose

@MarcGravell you'll have to do a lot of A/B testing. (:

8:00 PM
in fairness, we try not to show people that page too often

But breaking things is just so much fun!

it can be tidier, sure - but I'd rather fix the bugs than spend a week making the best fail page ever
maybe with animated 3d css courtesy Jin

don't forget unicornz!

Clever errors annoy me. I found the "aww snap!" page funny the first time; now when I get it I think "maybe you guys should spend less time being hilarious and more time making sure I don't see this"

It's even more exciting when the tab process that crashed actually had several tabs in it, and you have to go hunting for the failface favicons.

8:03 PM
wasn't the aww snap! thingy a chromium feature?

@OctavianDamiean That's what I'm talking about, yes

I love annoying @MichaelMrozek.

Q: What picture should the chat error page have?

balphaBesides that fact that chat's error page is ugly because it has no styling, it also steals borrows the error lolcat image from Stack Overflow. Of course we hope that nobody ever sees that page, but I'm sure we agree that's not going to happen, so we could at least have our own image. So, what p...

I'm all for unicorns

Ah, there you go, Charlie with his kidney removal scar.
Transplantin ur failz away from teh serverz. nods
sighs I really need to figure out how this code should function so I can actually write it.

@MichaelMrozek That was me.

8:17 PM
Ha! I just noticed an error in the query for this email alert. x68 Huh, George?

Heh :D

Got deputy! :D

congrats

Thanks!

A: What picture should the chat error page have?

Jon's Evil TwinInstead of a picture it should just be a chat page where you can chat with all the other people who are getting errors right now.

interesting...

Should be able to implement that in a few hours eh balpha?

and what error picture would you put on that one then? Idea: another chat. The wonderful world of recursion

I've always felt SO's error page should just embed a second SO so the Q&Aing can continue uninterrupted
2

"If you have questions about encountering this error page, please enter them below"

8:41 PM
a typical question would look like, OMGWTFBBQ anyone else having problemz with SO?

Who downvoted the Matrix???

Yeah!
grumble

good film; they should have made a sequel

@balpha I did! It's not really conducive to the error is it?

as far as I know something is in the making or at least planed

8:43 PM
@jcolebrand not being able to talk, you mean?

@jcolebrand hates me :(

@balpha I already can't talk
now if you want to implement the brainsuck interface...
You did get all that VC funding after all ...

@Fosco This site is amazing

@MichaelMrozek how have you not heard of that? You've heard of notalwaysright.com right?

@balpha You should just do what Microsoft does when the server doesn't understand the request:
2 days ago, by Tim Stone
<script language="JavaScript">
<!-- begin hide
function goElseWhere()
{
	var oldURL = window.location.hostname + window.location.pathname;
	var newURL = "https://" + oldURL;
	window.location = newURL;
}
goElseWhere();
// end hide -->
</script>

Q: Can we get custom SE schwag for a higher price?

MosheIs it possible to say, engrave my username and rep on a beer stein on the SE store? I'm sure many folks would pay more custom SE gear.

@jcolebrand I've seen that one before; not the notes one
@Moshe We all live on meta; I continue to not understand why you feel the need to link your every post in here 30 seconds after you submit it

@MichaelMrozek he also doesn't understand how email works
or the SEI global notification inbox
I'm also pretty sure he won't understand us talking about him with him right here ....

Lol.
I'll cool it then.

Some people have been reading to many passive aggressive notes.

@Hogan I was passive-aggressive last time; this time I kicked it up a notch

8:54 PM
@Hogan I usually just say it. Six or seven times to their face privately. Then to the room.

I wasn't talking about you two... I was taking about myself. Thanks for those links -- now I won't get any work done for weeks.

I love the "Like button"
also, curse you @Fosco

(True passive aggressiveness has plausible deniability.)

Pffft, I can see I need to start posting my more esoteric hipster links in here more often. You people are easily amused by old news :p

8:57 PM
lulz
Speaking of which, is it unsafe to follow their Twitter account, or is anyone a reasonable target as it is?

wtf does that even mean?
Is it "unsafe" to follow whose twitter account?

Q: why are stackoverflow users so dedicated

user780483I have been posting questions on stackoverflow for about a month now. Every time I post one I receive fast answers that are exactly what I am looking for. Just so I can understand the site better i'd like to know why are the people who answer questions on here so dedicated and loyal to the site...

I like how it's tagged

I think all my meta answers today are me being a smartass. I expect to hit the rep cap very soon

9:03 PM
Hmm, seems chat returned a 409 error earlier. Let's hope it stops climbing the 40x response code chain before it gets to 418.

You don't like teapots?

409 means you hit a throttle

Interesting

I'm surprised I don't get this more often:

I think all my meta answers today are me being a smartass. I expect to hit the rep cap very soon
why would a smartass be inspiration?

9:13 PM
I manage to do both

ahhh, enlightening

@TimStone I've build a couple of times in the last while; going through a round of performance tweaks etc

Ah, nifty. I think this was much earlier anyway, so I won't blame you this time ;)

Spin the wheel!

Also, I got the go-ahead to register for DevDays without having to pay out of my own pocket, hooray!

9:17 PM
@TimStone From the same company that pays you for hanging out in the Tavern? Shocking!

@TimStone I was very tempted to ask, but I'm pretty sure my company isn't as foolish as yours

@balpha I've got to do something while sitting in meetings I don't care much about.
@MichaelMrozek I get to pull out my officer card, which helps.

Officer Stone. Sounds like a cheap 80s crime series.

9:33 PM
So do most of @TimStone's messages

Well played.

Now be a little nice to @TimStone, he offered me a bottle of single malt.

Yeah, exactly! Wait..

I heard he offered a bottle of double malt to Mrozek to pick on him in public
something about sympathy

@balpha just one malt?

9:37 PM
By pure fluke, I've just checked my rep report - exactly 90,000 votes in total. (Presumably including downvotes.)
Anyone believing the "by pure fluke" part raise your hands

raises hand

@balpha it was a fluke that he did it moments before posting on twitter. I imagine the rest was planned.
and I'm gone. Let me announce to the world (the part that matters) that I'm gone. Bubye now! Bye!

9:52 PM
about as much fluke as this one, ahem:

that's shopped firebugged

now that happened purely by chance
@balpha sadly, not; I really am that mad

I see 13739 up, 403 down
did you retract a third of your downvotes since then?

very much not. If something has changed there, then I call "bug"
maybe they stopped counting on deleted items
(maybe "behavior change" more than "bug")

I had 1111 up, 1 down on SO a while back. But I convinced myself to vote on a few more things since then.

9:56 PM
Is there anyone in here who has experience with living in Utah?
(Seriously)

People live in Utah?

Apparently, yes
They even hosted the olympics once, didn't they?
A long, long time ago

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount just wants to have multiple wives

@balpha hey, didn't think of that!

Ah, Salt Lake City.

9:57 PM
Utah is starting to sound interesting
Although to get polygamy, I could go to Libya
Shorter flight, and less visa hassle

"Utah" is what I imagine a horse with a british accent to sound like

Utah has the Four Corners monument in it, but that's about all I know of it. I have a friend who lives to the south east in New Mexico, but I imagine it's quite different there.

My question essentially would be, if you're the kind of person who would feel really comfortable living in (or close to) San Francisco for example, is Salt Lake City a place to move to? In terms of cultural life, diversity, laid-back lifestyle, and so on?
I assume the answer is "no" but I don't really know - all I know about either place is not based on real-world experience :)

I can't imagine that Salt Lake City is anything like San Francisco, but you're right, I don't actually know that either...so good question.

Do accepted answers work towards mortarboard? If so, how long does that take?
Hit 200 on SO today first time ever.
Woot.

10:05 PM
@Moshe I don't think they do!
@Moshe Congratulations.

Meh. Well, thanks.
@Pekka - @popular's post seems to disagree. I am hopeful.
Thanks @Tim.

I think Mortarboard is an "awarded approximately one hour after UTC badge," but it's been a while since I got that one, so my memory might be off.

@Moshe I'm holding my thumbs for you, but @popular himself speaks differently here: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/59686/what-is-a-mortarboard
> To answer your final question, the badge usually shows up fairly quickly, within a day or so. As you noted in your edit, though, acceptances don't count; you need 200 rep from upvotes alone to qualify for the badge. See the big list of badge information.

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount The behaviour changed recently, Nick Craver updated the badge description in April.

10:10 PM
Well, here's the answer:
Thank Gd. \0/
Now. What in the world is a mortarboard?

points up to the linked question

@Moshe just do a google image search

@TimStone ah, nice!
It does make more sense that way.

@Tim clever @balpha took me a second to get te reference. You guys should post the image somewhere for me to use.
I don't have one handy.
I'm nearing 10K too, btw. Slowly...
Seeya folks!
